Loyal members of Warseer Forum,

Be it known to you that the geek, MrChaos le Dork take'd a vow of painting the army of Bretonnia. Should he fail, let his bones be cast upon the sea.

But lo! His geekiness knows no bound. For thou has choosen a winter theme for thy loyal Knights in 'bling-bling' armour.

Alas, thou has not chance upon a time to paint ye Knights yet. Fear not, for thou has begun 'undercoating' thy loyal subjects.

It is unmeet that I ask thy loyal members of Warseer Forum to seek patience at this time of woe.

So I finally slog through countless hours just to paint one. The knights are really detailed and blending the tabards are a paint. I'm planning to make paint each knight with their different heraldry. I'm not sure if I can survive the first wave of painting, completing these two were a tough challenge.

Here's the Gallant and the Musician.

Notice I've been lazy and used transfer sheets for the heraldry. Is there some way to remove the shinyness of the transfer?

Superb, Kudos. I love to see well painted Bretonnians.

As for the transfer: I've heard a coat of Testors Dullcote takes the shine off, but i seem to recall you have to paint gloss varnish over the transfer first so it doesn't react to the solvent in the spray, or something.

Whats with all the gorgeous Bretonnians all of a sudden???

Looking good although tidy that shield up a bit. The gallant however is spot on, especially his hawk

I don't mean to eat your gnoblar here, but that musician with the trumpet, why does he have a helmet? How will he blow the trumpet with that thing on?

On any other note: ******* sweet paintjob, keep up the awesome work!

Nice!
For the transfers, there is a line of specialised products for this.
Here is the link, i've used it once or twice but i know the tank modellers use it very much.

I'm sure they sell it in every good modelling shop.

@Mephistofeles - i would be more concerned about how that knight is using an eagle as a lance rather than how he blows a trumpet, someone call RSPCA!

28-11-2006, 20:05
no,it's fairly obvious that he wacks with the eagle AND the tiny sword on his helmet....pretty fantastic paintjob by the way, even though that little spludgeon of white you put on the horse's left leg, where the cloth meets the horse, bothers me a bit,,,,but that's nitpicking, because ,as said before, they look really nice

A little tutorial perhaps???

Maybe it's like that movie A Knight's Tale or something, and the weapon is inside the eagle/trumpet. Pretty shifty... I would hate to be stabbed by an eagle only to find out there was a dagger inside.

They look great by the way, the detail of the horse's face the Gallant rides is sweet.

Looking very good. Though, I do have to say, that before you go on, you may want to spend some time getting the horses ranked up, as they don't quite fit together without a little bit of work for some of the heads. F'rinstance the horse head that's on the musician's horse will not fit on any horse in the back ranks without repositioning the horse, it's head, or the horse in front of it. Some of the other heads only work behind certain bodies without tweaking, etc. So, before you start painting up the guys for the 2nd and 3rd ranks, be sure to fit the heads. Also, once you've done that, they'll only go into the ranks in the spots you design them for.

Also, if I might make a suggestion. I would imagine the heraldry on the caparison would be the same as the shield the Knight carries, rather than differing, such as your Musicain. Additionally, I think it might help tie the unit in together if the banner and the trumpet had the heraldry of the unit champ (or even the general, though I would save that for the BSB) rather than thier own.

Cheers everyone.

Here's two more the Standard Bearer and another Knight.

This guy is tough. I had a hard time figuring out the colors for him, but eventually went with dark blue.

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/7918/untitled1dz9.jpg

And here's a knight.

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/4555/untitled2ys4.jpg

So here's the first row. It's quite a challenge painting these Bretonnians, wonder if I can survive another regiment.

Gaagh, finally I've slogged myself to finish the Bretonnian Knights.

Here's the last 4
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/7285/img1500tf1.jpg

And the entire Knights of the Realm.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5272/img1505az9.jpg

I've yet to get something that will remove the shinyness of the transfer, either an undercoat or liquid form. If all else fails I will repaint the transfers.

In all Bretonnians are a challenging army to paint. I'm not sure if I want to add some freehand patterns for these knights, but I'll definetly save it for the Lord, Questing Knights, Grail Knights and Pegasus Knights.

More updates for Bretonnians after Christmas.

They sure are a challenge to paint I have been at mine since they were released and never seem to get any further as the are so detailed and vibrantly coloured.

These look great though, keep up the good work.

Wow man, those are fantastic. You manage to give the whole unit a uniform look, even though they have completely different heraldry and adornment. Fantastic!

Wow, these look amazing...great work! You've actually got me thinking of starting a Bret force of my own, especially now that I see you don't have to be a 'Eavy Metal painter to achieve a good look with them.

Very nice. I like them a lot.

Shouldn't the Bretonnian Lance formation be three across? That'd mean one more to paint to get three ranks.:D

Finally I got my hands on these Men at Arms.

The spure are awesome and filled with character.

Here are the first 4 that I've completed and I must say I spend more time on these guys than the Knights. :P

Yeoman Warden
He has a scar on his face and a tied dead bird as a feather on his helmet. Together with his trusty black mutt they are capable of killing a gobbo.
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/9192/img1614ef3.jpg

Monk/Men-at-arm
Supposed to be a normal men-at-arm but I wanted to add him on the front.
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1336/img1613sn5.jpg

Standard Bearer
He's carrying a banner and a torch. Hmmm.. I gave him a stubble for his weathered look. Notice the banner pole has a swan head. Wierd..
http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/1870/img1616bs6.jpg

Musician
Wierdest helmet of the lot and a running nose. He uses frogs as drum pongs.

There looking fantastic for rank and file, especially the priest. You could maybe touch them up a little but thats being extremely picky. Have the unit looking like that and you wont go far wrong.

A well painted colourful Bretonnian army can be one of the best looking in Warhammer & you've certainly made sure that yours lives up to that!

Very nice Job!!

If you paint the area you intend to apply the transfer to with a gloss varnish (the whole of the shield), the transfer will stick better, and when you dullcoat the lot it will fade away. There are some products for doing it after the fact

I have to say these are the most characterful models I have painted. From their helmets to their gear and equipment it's just plain detailed.

I'll get a few more after christmas, but know I have big plans for my Bretonnian Lord on Royal Pegasus.

Arhalien

I love the character of the front rank models. Frogs as drumsticks? Where any prohibited substances involved at any point? :p

Ona side note, shouldn;t the MaAs be 5 wide?

Reflex
21-12-2006, 15:23
why bretonnian's are awsome: if you win, it was obviously the knights that saved bretonnia from certain doom, and easy victory for the knights. the dukes and lords of bretonnia fought and won, in much honour and gallantry...etc..

but if you lose, the peasants... all there fault, they didnt fight to there best ability, as poor as it is, the poor low born commoners. they didnt servece the knights wargear properly.. stupid peasants...

MaAs dont have to be 5 wide, only if you want rank bonus... but having 16 models in the box.. grrr...

more to come.. cha mona

I love everything about all your miniatures at the moment dude. Very vibrant colours for the peasantry.

Absolutely drooling over the knights. Reminds me of why I wanted a Bretonnian army back in 5th edition; large units of knights, each knight painted in an entirely individual scheme.

aww hell, i'm not going to do a chaos army, i'll do a Bretonnian army instead. hey, its different from dwarves, it'll be a nice change. plus i love the M@A models. i may be very easily influenced and inspired at the moment, but your peasants are very nice. you've inspired me.

The real foolish thing to do would be to take off your helmet every time you need to blow a horn...

GW advises you to paint over them. So for example the black fleur-de-lys should be painted over with black, and the surroundings the same color as the horse caparison.

Great painting, though! I love the smooth crispness of the colors.

Hey there!

Those Brets are looking great!
Concerning the shiny transfers, I've found that a simple painted on coat of GW Matt Varnish (not the spray!) blends them quite nicely into the background without ruining them. Hope that helps!

I do the above & it works a treat! Very, Very easy to do as well!

I hope you have more pics to show us. The Bretonnian Blog looks great. Nice work on the snow and the horses are very well painted (as are the rest of the models!

I just started Bretts again. I owned the origional Bretonnian Plastics and pewter Men at Arms al long time ago and yes they were painted.

The new plastics are great although I am not a huge fan of the heads/faces on some of the men at arms even if it does fit in with the GW fluff.

Keep the painting & pics coming. I just finished assembling & undercoating my Men at Arms today.

Consider me Subscribed!

Happy Painting,

These are looking brilliant. The caparisons on the horses look really well shaded and you've got some lovely colours in there. They look like hard work but I bet when you have a full army painted up they'll look stunning.
