View Full Version : For Averland! For the Empire! For Sigmar!

11-12-2006, 13:43
Whats this? A project log that isnt Imperal Guard? Or isnt 40k?

Why yes. And its mine :)

Welcome, pull up a pew.

Alas Games Workshop have decided to re-release the Empire for 7th Edition and as a long time fan of the Empire but being put off by the dodgey miniatures this is a perfect time for me to start, so here i am!

Well to start of i decided to only buy a few boxes of miniatures, and they came this morning...

Okay i may have gone and bought the Army Box! :p

So what am i going to do with this collection of cardboard and plastic? (not to mention a bit of metal in the form of a mage, which looks very nice in the flesh i might add)

Well im going to make the Grand Standing Army of Averland (or Averheim, which ever) as a whole army of Black and Yellow uniformed state troops would look very nice indeed!

This isnt my first project log, back in March i started an army for Dwarfs....unfortunatly after painting a few warriors and starting a bolt thrower....i got bored and stopped (havn't we all been there?)

But ive decided that im just going to carry on with the army even if it isnt Golden Deamon winning quailty, as im a perfectionist and this has caused me to abandon a lot of armies because they didnt turn out how i wanted them.

And as i've barely looked at all the new stuff (damn University work) ive been working on a test model for the last few weeks, and here he is..

Hes not great (and neither is my camera) but that give you a (very) rough idea of what my painting like.

*infact looking at that picture makes it look a lot worse than it is!*

Anyways im going to look at my new shiney Empire things and start assembling 5 spearmen.

Take care.

Consider me subscribed!

I'm planning on an Averland army too ... or maybe a Stirland army ... or maybe an Ostermark army.

Best of luck, and remember to post pics often!

**EDIT** And i may well challenge you to a game when it's all done - so beware! :D

11-12-2006, 14:23
Why not all 3 :D

I didn't know they were released yet, oh to live in the home country and get new releases early.

Looking good mate, an army of that standard would be great.

The feather could use a little more definition though.

11-12-2006, 14:26
Thanks Jedi152!

I shall be posting pics as often as i can, but im really slow at doing stuff, also im playing the Mark of Chaos computer game as well as reading the WFRP novel "Death's Legacy" (and the fact that University and a girlfriend dont help either!)

Before i came on i had a go at making a spearman but it took a while to get rid of the mold line (as they werent greatly cast) but hey, ill solider on!

Looking forward to seeing your army,as the Empire needs all the help it can get against the enemies of Chaos! :p

11-12-2006, 15:16
The new pistoliers are lovely, although the feathers is too damn big and the look is not that of... what's the term for a cavalryman with pistols, now again?

Consider me subscribed, too!

Ideal, good luck net Guru. I will try and keep up to date with any progress you make. I plan on starting an Empire army (possibly Altdorf) sometime in the new year. It will be good to see what some of the new Empire figures look like.

11-12-2006, 16:37
i got bored and stopped (havn't we all been there?)

* soothly talking *

Yes dear, throw it into the group, dont be ashamed!
We love you.. :eyebrows:

Really nice! A fantasy blog finally!
And its a cool army too!
( its not orcs, no.. its not )
But still, heh.. I love empire too!
The colour scheme looks good too!
Can't really make out the black on that figure though.. But who cares anyway?
I like it!
Keep it up!

What model is that? Is it a unit champion? It looks like a plastic Great Sword.

Its the special edition Great Sword champion made specially for the Cry Havoc open days at Warhammer World held a few years ago (i got that one in February 2004)

*cheers!* a fantasy project log! I will be watching this with great interest. Looking forward to seeing more.

11-12-2006, 18:42
oh, all the great new empire minis- you are a very lucky person.

11-12-2006, 18:47
to Averland!

will definately be watching this log, fantasy logs are so refreshing and i don't think i've ever seen an averlander army, so stick with it!

11-12-2006, 19:13
Prospectful project log Net Guru, despite odd choice for a test model:evilgrin:. This used to be No1 on my most wanted list.

11-12-2006, 20:46
Thanks for the kudos everyone, hopefully it'll spur me on to greater deeds! :)

Well after a slow day ive assembled 3 and a half spearmen, there nice models however its hard to get them to raise there spears enough so they can stand on the second rank (and the excess feathers dont help!)

Also im not too keen on the huge amount of accessories carried by each man, they have skulls, hour glasses, daggers, purity seals (what are they space marines) which kinda means they cant lower their right hand much.....which feeds into the raised spear problem...oh well...

As for the army i do like background but im not sure if i can make it very Averlandish, all i know is that Averland has strong Tilean influences so crossbows are a favorite and Myramdia is worshipped (so thats knights of the blazing sun) but other than that i think ill just add whatever takes my fancy.

Anyways thanks everyone.

You any idea how much theygo for??? For god's sake don't let Harry see that model!!!

I shall be watching this thread with much interest as I have also just restarted my Empire Army.

All the best of look.

p.s. Thanks for not posting another 40k PL :)

11-12-2006, 22:19
You any idea how much theygo for??? For god's sake don't let Harry see that model!!!

Its okay...i still have another one fresh in the bag ;)

12-12-2006, 02:11
dam can't wait for that new flaming mage to be painted. I've never been a fan of WHFB but i think i might start to like it after this army has been painted.

Can't wait for better pictures.

13-12-2006, 18:25
A (very) slight update, between real life and activities contain therein i have managed to put together five spearmen ready for undercoating..

Tomorrow i have Uni till late and on Friday i have a party (getting very drunk :) ) so hopefully the weathers good enough for some undercoating on Saturday (as i spray)

Take care.

14-12-2006, 09:39
Nice to see another Empire project, though I guess they'll be mightily common in the near future.

I also can't help but be a little jealous at the massive amount of replies for just one painted model :p

But it's looking very nice so far, and I like the way the face is painted. Looking forward to seeing more :)

20-12-2006, 14:36
Progress continues (albiet slowly)

Im about half way through the spearmen (you can see them in the top left)..

And a close up of one..

And another..

Okay it's a mantra of people who take pictures of minis but my camera SUCKS, and in real life the minis look far better, but i guess you'll never know that....oh well....

Progress continues....

20-12-2006, 14:39
Ah, an update!

Nice yellow - How did you do it, is it highlighted up from Snakebite Leather?

and in real life the minis look far better, but i guess you'll never know that....oh well....
We'll see about that!

20-12-2006, 14:45
why in Nurgle's name has that spearman got bare feet?

20-12-2006, 14:48
Ah, an update!

Nice yellow - How did you do it, is it highlighted up from Snakebite Leather?

Nope, i painted the area bleached bone, then just painted Bubonic Brown over that and i painted the recessed areas with Vermin brown, and highlighed the yellow using Sunburst yellow with a little skull white.

The Judge
20-12-2006, 15:10
Yeah, that's a nice looking scheme

I look forward to updates!

20-12-2006, 16:25
yeah, i can't wait for more updates. And are you planning any conversions? If you want some inspiration (you probably have) but look at the averland mordheim list on the specialist games site.

Yeah, why does that spearman have bare feet? seems odd, but thats peasants for you.

09-07-2007, 15:14
Welcome back its been a long seven months, you'd expect the army to be finished huh?....

...ummm....not really. In the last seven months ive fell out of love with the Empire, Warhammer in general and collected a Eldar army....which then after a few short months i came to the decision that 40k and the Eldar aint for me, so rather discouraged by it all i saw my Empire army box and thought sod it i might as well finish what i started and thats exactly what ive done, i rekindled my love for the Empire and now im in full army production mode! :D

So in the last month ive decided that its time to get serious and start to paint the army in a way that will make it easier for me to see the fruits of my labour, and so with that mantra i set about assembling 1,400 points of Empire and its taken me four weeks (i started to lose the will to live after a bit) but finally....

Phew, its all removed, cleaned and glued ready for priming, and this is by far the most i have ever assembled in one go, and you know what, it doesnt half feel good to see it assembled and to think i did all that!

What i never appreciated before was how much of and industrial scale you have to do things, before i use to work on five miniatures from start to finish so things like gluing sand to the base was a few minitues work but with the whole army i spent an hour at least sanding all the bases....then another (messy) half an hour inking all the bases (i put black ink on the sand to hold it into place when i paint the bases so the sand doesnt come off with the brush) and another whole day to make movement trays!

All in all a lot of work.

The generals of the army?

(if your wondering why my warrior preist is lookings odd i used him as a test when i got my new foundation paints)

I have paint some of it from December (the spearmen decided that spears wernt for them and quickly learnt how to wield a sword)

So thats where i am with the army, ive undercoated the Handgunners, Crossbow men and the rest of the swordsmen and work should start on them soon (and hopefully ill undercoat the rest when i get a new spray paint)

And hopefully ill have enough troops to have my very first game of Warhammer soon (with who is anyones guess!)

Anyways ill keep updating as time goes on, but im a busy man so alas be patient!

09-07-2007, 16:05
I was wondering where this one had gone ;)

Very good looking work on the swordsmen so far; I thought they were originally spearmen though?

10-07-2007, 09:43
I will still be looking at this log with interest, but only if you promise not to let it slog another 7 months!

Just kidding, loving your empire.

10-07-2007, 12:31
You any idea how much theygo for??? For god's sake don't let Harry see that model!!!

Its okay...i still have another one fresh in the bag ;)

Have you still got it "fresh in the bag"? :D
If you are interested in any vintage or classic empire bits to add to your army in exchange for him just let me know via PM.

Best of luck with this army may I suggest you come amd join in the Tale of Painters ... You are in a perfect position to join in and it may be just the encouragment you need to see this project through.

16-07-2007, 13:34
Update time!

Well its not going as fast as i hoped but on Friday i took the girlfriend to Warhammer World so i didnt get much painting done then and alas on Saturday i got far too drunk and so Sunday was spent feeling sorry for myself so the men of Averland have had to be pushed back, but i have got something to show you alls..

Handgunners WIP

Close up of Baldie

Old man wilkes

And the champ with Hockland Rifle (it'd be silly not too)

Be hopefully ill get faster as i havnt painted anything since December so im having to relearn how to paint skin etc etc and the yellows taking an age to come out in one smooth shade but alas ill carry on, so any comments etc feel free to leave!

18-07-2007, 00:02
Hell, that skin looks better than what I have going on.

And the yellow thing is why I'll never play Averland or Imperial Fists ;)

18-07-2007, 00:31
looking nice there but the black needs bringing out abit more asit is looking to flat otherthan that they are looking really nice, skin tone is nice as well keep up the good work!!!! :D

Best regards

19-07-2007, 13:36
great job on the yellow and the Flesh man..... Could you give me a quick tutorial on the Beautiful skin?

19-07-2007, 16:27
great job on the yellow and the Flesh man..... Could you give me a quick tutorial on the Beautiful skin?

Its goes something like this:-

Dark Flesh,
Tanned Flesh,
Dwarf Flesh,
Dwarf Flesh and Bleached Bone

Starting from dark flesh in the very deep parts of the face moving up till you paint dwarf flesh and bleached bone on the very high points of the skin.

As for the handgunner ive completed the uniforms and started on the guns, ill update tomorrow with pics hopefully

20-07-2007, 16:51
As promised an update! Basically ive completed the flesh, hair, and uniforms along with the wood on the handguns, and theres Baldie to prove it...

And a better shot of the uniforms...

And thats where im at. The metal isnt finished ive done half of the guns with an aim to get them all done for tonight (but i might be going to the pub so we'll see!) Ive seen the tale of fantasy painters thread and thought it'd be a good idea to join which leaves me with 11 days to finish these, and because they are only 110ish points i may quickly paint the warrior priest to push the points past 200, but out of the eleven days ive got an interview on one, and id said i'd let my girlfriend paint a miniature on the other day so its really 9 days.....not to mention any days were i go out boozing......oh dear what have i got myself into.....

20-07-2007, 18:30
there really comming along now, nicely done:D can't wait to see a finished unit of them keep up the good work looking forward to it :)

Best regards

21-07-2007, 16:39
Very nicely done; the yellow is lovely and vibrant :D

21-07-2007, 16:41
Well, the boozing is what a joker card is for!

21-07-2007, 17:59
Great looking army so far, a really nice standard for a whole army and produced relatively quickly to boot! :D

26-07-2007, 17:48
Update time!

And finally the handgunners are finished! Well apart from the green they are but i need Camo Green so its off to Warhammer World on Saturday so they're 95% finished..

Im going to do a detailed (and much higher quailty of shots for the TOFP monthly thread and i only want to take them off the pots when they have been individually varnished (so i need the green to finish them) so rest assured that my sub par photos will soon be replaced with slightly less than sub par photos!

And with my 5 days left of this month...

Hopefully it shouldnt be a problem as long as my weekend is fairly slow (but im going to see Derby vs Mansfield on Saturday so maybe not!)

Any comments etc feel free...

26-07-2007, 18:03
They're looking really nice Netguru; great stuff :D

27-07-2007, 18:25
Sigmar's blood... those finished yellows are superb. No, I take that back, they're absolutely first rate. Top drawer. Some of the best 've seen outside of 'Eavy Metal.

Simple to paint too, by the sounds of things! You're gonna have one barnstormer of an army there mate.

Good bloody job! Stick at it!

01-08-2007, 11:42
Update time!

Ive finised the handgunners and the warrior priest (and ive posted them in the TOFP thread) but as i like to keep this thread open for WIP and to hear the good feedback im getting im posing a few more shots of the finished atricle..

So there you have it, this month im planning on painting 10 swordsmen and a BSB, also im planning on finishing the swordmen from December to bring the unit up to 20, its more than double last months but as half of them are started it shouldnt be too harse...

01-08-2007, 21:36
Just seen this in the monthly roundup thread for the ToP; lovely work on everything, especially the yellow :D

02-08-2007, 02:56
man alive, just found this and so can't belive i missed it. you started out the same time i did give or take a week and to date ive got only one unit and two heroes done so where pretty even.

Though your skill is much beyond mine, very well done with your model painting skill. The priest is great and same goes for the handgunners. loving the work on the crazy old man.

01-09-2007, 17:56
I have posted in the TOFP thread for this months work but im using this as overflow for some pictures, so heres more pictures of my army so far...

This month its a cannon and 5 pistolliers, so as ever comments or question are welcomed!

01-09-2007, 19:34
As I've said in the update thread; beautiful work Netguru :D

02-09-2007, 09:36
Great work, especially on faces and yellows! You have really a good and clean style.

02-09-2007, 10:10
Nope, i painted the area bleached bone, then just painted Bubonic Brown over that and i painted the recessed areas with Vermin brown, and highlighed the yellow using Sunburst yellow with a little skull white.

Beautiful looking models mate, just one question, which did you use for the main coat? (I don't know anything about the yellows! I don't own any haha)

02-09-2007, 10:35
As I've said in the update thread; beautiful work Netguru :D

Why thank you! :) Hopefully i can keep this up for the whole army, but ive officially painted more models for this army than i ever have for my previous armies!

Beautiful looking models mate, just one question, which did you use for the main coat? (I don't know anything about the yellows! I don't own any haha)

Thats actually my old yellow recipe, the current one im using is as follows..

Undercoat: Dheneb Stone (Foundation paint) i use this as it gives a nice layer for the yellow to cover, as i use a black primer so even the foundation yellow (Iyanden Darksun) takes about five coats to cover with a nice solid layer, so i use Dheneb Stone as this means i have to use two coats of the yellow to get a nice consistant tone instead of five (which takes forever).

Basecoat: Iyanden Darksun (foundation paint) this is watered down (as always with all my paints) and just applied all over even in the recesses (as the next stage will take care of that) i normally do this stage before painting anything else on the model as this means i can be messy (which speeds up the process) as all i have to do is do a one minute touch up with chaos black to any parts that i didnt want yellow.

Shading (in the recesses): A 50 - 50 mix of Calthan Brown and Tausept Ochre (both again foundation paints) once ive mixed the paint then i paint the very deep parts of the uniform, this is mainly if the model has a sleeve that has deep creases in (like the puffy style sleeve, if you know what i mean) and at the back of the leg where there is a line running down.

Highligh: Iyaden Darksun (foundation paint) mixed with 50%(ish) Bleched bone , and i apply this as a highligh to all the edges of the uniform, you jusy have to be carefull that the mix is light enough for people to see it (as if it has too much Iyanden Darksun then it will be hard for people to see where you've highlighted) so sometimes ill paint one model and go back and add more bleched bone untill im happy with the tone level, and thats about it, ive been experiementing with using Dheneb Stone as an extreme highligh and painting it on the very extreme edges of the model (so far ive only attempted it with the BSB) and i think it looks better, but im not sure if it makes the yellow too white, but the joy of army painting is experimenting so when you finish the army your a much better painter than when you started!

Hope this helps, and any more questions feel free to ask..

(i might do a little tutorial about the above, but it might take a couple of weeks)

20-09-2007, 17:44
They look great! I'll be following this log :)

I'm thinking of going for Averland for my second empire army too.

20-09-2007, 20:42
Awesome start to what will no doubt be an awesome army. I really like the more realistic look you've given to the yellow - it isn't pristine and glowing which it wouldn't be after a couple years of campaigning!

Keep up the good work
Aflo (Adam)

27-03-2008, 03:30
id love to see your army as a whole when its done, everything so far looks great

27-03-2008, 20:18
id love to see your army as a whole when its done, everything so far looks great

Ummm....well.......y'see theres probabily not much chance of that as this army is....well i wouldnt say dead, but its smelling a little bit....off.

My problem is im like one of those artist people thats incredibly passion one minute, then bored the next.....and couple this with a job and a girlfriend...there was never much hope for this army.

But still! The lesson learnt is that is nice to have a good looking army but the whole point of collecting an army is that *god forbid* it should see a gaming table every once in a while and be actually played with, not stuck on my painting table for months at a time.

This tale isn't complete, after finishing a cannon and 5 outriders (which we a royal pain in the ****, and took a good month to do) i now have 5 half painted knights looking at me every time i go in my room, just to remind me that or my failings as a nerd.

But hey thats life, the next army i paint (which is going to be dead before i start) will be a slap dash affair mixed with some nice shading....

....and if not there always those mean looking knights to finish off...

26-04-2008, 11:40
ohh I hope you continue thats a sweet 500pts you've got painted and its inspiring me to work on my empire...

I'm totally pumped to paint my warrior priest now after seeing your excellent one

22-03-2009, 14:16
This is one of the nicest Empire armies i've ever seen - any chance of seeing the knights ect? :D
