View Full Version : Having a problem on choosing a super-heavy model

Next spring I'll be getting a super-heavy model from Forge. Only I don't know what is worth taking. So, if someone could list some + or - of different models, it would help. As a Guard player I was thinking a Marauder Destroyer, but it doesn't seem to be worth the points it costs. It does have a fine range of firepower to take out even a Titan (I guess), but as the normal bombs seem to make only a small blast and not Ordanance, I don't think it will do. Marauder was a tempting choice as everyone else like those Baneblades.

The new Gorgon is also very tempting on the fact that it cost so much less in money than others. Also if it would be packet with 50 strong Infantry Platoon with meltas and warrior weapons it could stun the opposing player :D

But hey, if you any toughts on the subject, I'd like to hear them.

Get a bane blade mate, best all round super heavy in the game easily. Also as a guard player they are the pinnicle of tread headness. GO THE BANEBLADE!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree, with ss_cherubael. If I had the choice of buying a super heavy, I would certainly go for a Baneblade.

When I was presented with that choice, I got myself a stormblade. Why? I looks good. Seriously, if you're spending that much money on a kit, you'd better pick one that you like the looks of.

I'd take a Baneblade every time. I definitely believe it can lay down more firepower in a turn than anything else in the game and it can take the largest beating of pretty much any super-heavy (it can sustain more weapon destroyed results).

Don't take a flyer. They're fun and all and I've always wanted a Lightning of Fury but honestly I've never thought they earn their points back well enough.

Gorgons are cool but I'm a very theme-oriented player with a special place in my heart for the new Krieg minis and I would be hurt to see a Gorgon used with any other army. But that's just me.

Get the Lucius Pattern BaneBlade, so much more detail than the MP one. Awesome model.

if you have the money and the time i would go for a titan, the baneblade is a great modle....but it should be released as plastic kit at some point.

Titans are just scary on the table top :)

The Baneblade will be last resort, everyone has one so I was thinking something rarer... Shadowsword would do, but it seems that Forge isn't selling those anymore. The Stormsword is tempting but it lacks the longrange firepower, so it's either the Stormblade or Baneblade... I'll need to check some photos of them, to deside wich is better looking...

What he said. Make your choice based on looks. The vast majority of FW stuff is deliberately over-costed in terms of points to stop them taking over. ;) After all, you don't want to spend 100+ on a model that you dislike the look of, no matter how game winning it may or may not be.

Shadowsword would do, but it seems that Forge isn't selling those anymore.Did you get that info from FW? It stil seems to be listed on the site (somehow I doubt it's £150 for the interior only): http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/shadowint.htm (bottom of the super heavy (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/SUPER_HEAVY_TANKS.html) page)

Personally I dislike the tanks with fixed turrets but agree that Baneblades are what everyone gets so would want something different. Would a Gorgon do? They look pretty awesome. How about a flyer like a Vulture? They're also very attractive and you could treat yourself to two for the price of a tank (vulture and valkyrie, perhaps, or maybe just plump for a marauder after all since they're cool-looking).

That's only the interior parts, the Shadowsword it self was 250 (when it still was availble)...

Well, for now I think I'll take the Gorgon... Who knows, maybe something more will come from Forge before next spring...

First of all, I have never heard of a super heavy at 250 to start with, second and I quote..."This is a complete multi-part resin kit of the Imperial Guard Shadowsword with fully detailed interior. "

So they still sell the shadowsword

I'd go for the Lucious pattern Baneblade, its a sweet model. If you feel that there are too many of them out there, then I would say the Stormsblade followed by the Stormsword.

Forgeworld is coming out with a few leman russ variants soon (yes, I'm sure you already know this), so maybe instead of one big tank, you'll want a bunch of 'little' tanks.

Personaly, I would either get a valkyrie and however many elysians you could afford afterward, or a three pack of centars and kriegs. But if your realy realy set on the super-heavy, then my advice is gorgon. Super heavies attract a LOT of attention, but once your opponent figures out the heaviest weapon you have on it is a heavy bolter, chances are fair they'll chuckle to themselves, and worry more about something else (assuming you have something else to worry about). Then you plop out a full infantry platoon armed with assault weapons into their ranks.

Personally I really like the Stormblade model, but as I only have the original (3rd ed) IA rules I can't comment on its effectiveness with relation to other Superheavies as I don't know its main armament.

The gorgon also would be a good choice for the reasons mentioned above. People will freak when they see a huge tank, then realize its not much of a threat. Then you can unload Fifty troop models onto them and watch the fun begin.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a Gorgon as they are rather "single purpose."

The Stormblade is probably the most cost effective of all the Super Heavies, whislt the Baneblade is undoubtedly the best rules-wise, but you pay for that. The Stormsword and Shadowsword are both specialists - although I would probably get a Shadowsword simply because they have always been my favourite...

i'd have the marauder destroyer.
have you seen how much firepower that thing lays down???
it's just evil.

Sorry about the wrong prize number, met it in euros, not in pounds...

But I thing I'll go with the Gorgon, cheap in points and money. Also my friend (of a friend, of a friend, ...) has 4 Benablades. So if I do need one, I think I'll burrow his. And I like the idea to go close-prox with enemy in a big game. What would you gentlemen sugsest for Titan hunt?

The Stormblade's just pure damn sexy, but the Baneblade does seems both the best points-per-pound and a more balanced rules set.

Has forgeworld ever made a Stormhammer? I have a bunch of epic models and was wondering which are made in 40K scale.

Same with the Mars-pattern stormblades (with the helion missile racks). IAv1 says that the pattern was discontinued due to explosions of externaly mounted missles, but that's no excuse..
