As I seem to constantly start half arsed projects and want to show them off, I've started a generic painting log. So here's some shots of my wip tau

14-12-2006, 18:17
nice work, but i'd advise more black, better basecoats and more highighting on the tau, especially the tanks.

you cna really paint well there, just persevere and finish that tank with some highlights/shadin etc.

nice one ;)

chunk
14-12-2006, 20:05
You have a fair point that I could add more detail to the tanks, possibly even some blacklining. But the basecoats are as good as they can be, and I defend the use of only using black when all else fails. As one of the most boring, hard to work with colours going it also has an annoying habit of looking un-natural. Also large areas of black look like unpainted undercoat. Please also understand I ramp up the exposure on my camera to eliminate shadow, removing all real light light shading.

However I might have misunderstood your comments, and I think you might prefer something a little bit more like this

I like the Boromir head conversion very much, it all looks great, i especially like the dirt/dust effect weathering across the battlesuit- what did you use?

nice job mate
i'll follow this - don't worry I too am a half arsed project starter
SC

chunk
21-12-2006, 08:32
The battlesuit weathering was actually my attempt at tau camo (looking a bit red faced now). None the less, I sprayed it with plasti-cote 'caramel' (available from all good wilkenson stores), then stippled tamiya 'khaki' in tiger stripes across the armor. To pull the two together I used a watered down brown ink with a little washing up liqued in.

Tis the season of half-arsed projects!!!

Very nice stuff - like the weathering on the 'fish.

Bugstomper
21-12-2006, 11:26
Nice stuff, i'm intrigued by the crisis suit, where did you get the hands from? or what did you make them from if they're scratch built? They look much better than the normal ones :)

chunk
21-12-2006, 21:19
The suits hands were sculpted from green stuff, as far as I'm aware only farsight has a 'hand' and its a bit weedy. My suits are in part based on a pc game I loved called heavy gear, hence the hands and big infanteer look.

The acolyte is in fact a missionary with boromirs head, witch hunters sword and brettonian shield.

Spiky, dont worry the buildings will be done, I just have to sych myself up/find an excuse to escape from the family. I'll be up for a game on weds night, do you have a cod rulebook?

ss_cherubael
24-12-2006, 05:12
Good weathering and damage effects. The marine colour scheme looks different to the normal shiny sort of deal that marines always seem to get stuck with. I like that inquisitor he looks like a very futuristic sigmarite warrior priest which i think is cool. I do think that they could benefit from a bit more shading and highlighting in a few places to add depth as the weathering and damage doesnt do enough in my opinion.
Also that chaos marine is ace! how well do the SM torsos fit onto the chaos warrior legs? as i was thinking about doing a few and didnt really feel like putting that much effort into it. All round good work mate keep em coming!

chunk
24-12-2006, 08:58
I did'nt fit a space marine torso onto chaos legs. Its the standard body of the warrior, cut off the sockets for the arms, then cut some marine arms to fit.

The marines are meant to evoke a more rogue trader aspect of 40k, back when they didnt automatically win 'cos marines are that awsome'. I wanted my boys to look like they've put up a bit of a fight.

How did you create the actual mud (Greenstuff?)?

Keep up the great work.

26-12-2006, 18:21
Your marines are looking sweet - I especially like those Rhinos!

One quick question, from someone who's only done very minor conversions so far: On the marine holding a combat knife in his left hand, what did you do to wrap his fingers around the hilt of the knife? I'm assuming that you cut partially through them then patched them up with green stuff, but if there's a better way I'd like to know, as I want to try something similar.

chunk
26-12-2006, 18:58
Thanks for the comments guys

The Flip: The mud was made from a guide in white dwarf refering to modelling IG tanks. Its achieved by mixing artex (this is better than regular pre-mixed plaster as it is more rubbery), PVA and a sprinkle of sand. Try not to add any water to the mix as it will make the whole lot too runny and wont stick like... well you get the point. Then get an 'old' paint brush and scrape it off in areas where you would think that the mud pools.

ryfitz13: The knife hand normally holds a chainsword and comes with the assault marines. Remove the chainsword and carefully scrape the guard off the fingers. Remove the pommel and glue it back on the thumbside of the hand. Glue the knife onto the other side of the hand.

No-one noticed the home made spaced armour, is it just not noticable?

Ha, good old Lost and the Chod! ;) :skull:

That aside, everything looks very good. I really like your marines, and you've got some very good conversions in there - the marine with axe and the one with meltagun are my favorites, though the helmet and plasma gun on the pgunner are very nice too. Oh, and the =][= henchmen (crusader?) with the shield is really something too, nice use of bitz. Where is his head from? Lord of the Rings??

So keep up the good work, enjoying seeing so much new stuff so fast.

Thanks for the comments guys. Will try to update as often as I can, but I left my camera at work. I will be mostly doing 40k for the forseeable future.

WIP armies:
Tau Empire 1500pt (only a battlesuit left)
Eldar (finish the guardians and war walker)
Marines (lots of tactical, not even a working army list yet)
Dark Eldar Wych Cult (because I love raiders)
Necrons (I dont want to waste a perfectly good model)
Imperial Guard (having ordered west-winds new ww2 heads)
Goblin wolf boy army (I suppose I'd better have a warhammer army)
Men of Numenor (a freind put a bet on saying i would'nt paint lotr)
Cities of Death (I am doing them Spikyjames!!!!)

Your Marine scheme is probably my favorite I have ever seen. Of course that's my personal heavy bias towards olive green, especially when used in contrast with something like yellow. And, though I wouldn't have expected it, the red works in perfectly as well.

I feel like the tanks need yellow, but I really don't see anywhere to put it... on the vertical ridges below the exhaust vents on the sides and the armor plating over the gun on top might work, mirroring the yellow shoulders and heads of the Marines. That's probably a lot more work and I'm not sure if the look would work (usually I Photoshop before talking). But still, even a tiny bit of yellow somewhere is worth consideration.

I never thought I'd say this, but MORE MARINES! :D

...and something completely different, Wyches!!!!

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/chunk85_bucket/DSCF0268_edited.jpg

I'm not sure that dark eldar should have healthy looking skin, but I do like the skin I've done on them.

I have spent all day trying to put a ******* drop pod together, the bits look cool but I cant figure out how it goes together.

Are the Wyches done? The hair looks flat black, and the Succubus Agoniser looks like it needs more color. Nice to see DE, though - my brother and I share an army, and they're fun to play. Plus I like the model range a lot more than most people, apparently...

chunk
27-01-2007, 20:23
Spiky: Some very complex templates that I found on the web. Doesnt seem possible to fit together

Pekal: The hair is flat black on three of the wyches, I should have stated that when the army is finished the hair colour will be used as squad markings. And I hate that agoniser whip thing. Will be replaced...

So all ready to go, with only the army base board and raider crews to build. With time left over to start Lelith (or at least a scared guardsman on the base)

Thanks for the cheers guys!

Sorry if I've not already said, the Dark Eldar is in actual fact a 1500pt Wych cult. Just had a thought one day that I'd never even seen one, let alone painted. This is where everyone proves me wrong.

I used my Tau, which are a few pages previous. They're not as good as I thought they were, not even nominated for best army. But theres always next time for that!

The guardsman is a prisoner, just thought it might illustrate the contempt she would have for such things.

Lavfluris

As I am quite pleased with the end result of my DE base, I started work on one for my space marines. The end result, hopefully, will make it look like they have just overridden a defence line.

If this little experiment works out, it will feature as a burnt out Rhino on the base. Its a tin foil mold of a rhino, layered with pva, with expanding foam sprayed inside. Tried it once in college, but that was with a clay mould...

chunk
18-02-2007, 18:35
I should warn you, it can be quite fiddly.

First cut off the feet below the ankle/hinge bit, and make it flat. Then seperate the thigh from the calf, and the hips from the thighs. Glue the calf onto the foot, shave the top of the calf flat. Glue the thigh back onto the calf, in an upright position. Prepare the thigh so that it can glue into a sensible position on the hips. Finally, take the untouched leg, and glue it into a suitable 'walking' position.

Sorry if that put you off!

Made another army board, this time for my Tau. You know, I really love these things. So easy to make, and it can do so much to pull together the theme of your army. Also at tournaments I now have a dedicated movement tray to use between tables!

Whilst it's nice to see some Dark Eldar, however goodd your painting is - and it's good - the models are poor enough to decrease the result. I hope that their coming reincarnation will be far better. Good idea to use chaos hounds as warp beasts.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Voronwe[MQ]; believe it or not, I like the wych models. Even though there are only 3 basic variants. The warp beast models are quite crap though, I must admit. Cant help but think Gary Morley ran over a cat on his way to work, killed it, skinned it then ran into the design studio shouting 'I've got a new three up that needs to be cast!' There is no love for this man in my body.

To take my mind off the insanity of painting the same model over and over, I started a space wolf based on an old piece of gw art:

chunk
28-02-2007, 17:42
Oh, right, army bases. Take a piece of hardboard, and cut to the size you want (I make mine 12'' by 36'') cut a layer of polystyrene 1'' thick to go on top of the board, then another hardboard layer. You should now have a sort of 'sandwich'. Get a lengh of skirting board and use a mitre saw to cut it to the internal dimensions of the board. Use a cargo strap to hold it all together as it dries. Decorate the top to suit your army.

And yes, there will be more than likely an army to follow that master.

What do they drive? Buses? Tractors?

Its a garage that has two 7 foot wide doors. Thats not alot of room to swing your door open on a 6 foot wide car (not including wing mirrors)

Check out the bloke who's been to driving school!

Also, now back in the Pompey area for the forseeable future (maybe, probably, unless something else comes up)

I did blitz this squad of Dark Eldar

Wow, lots of feedback from new people! Must have got good at painting or something. Annoying thing is I'd have liked to have spent a bit more effort on them but time was pressing issue.

When I finish them I'll do a group shot on a white piece of paper.

Yikes, I neve thought I'd say this, but, good Dark Eldar warriors Chunk! Somehow they work in a way that the official ones don't. It could be the helmets (what are they out of interest?) or it could just be the colour scheme.

Great work :)

chunk
22-04-2007, 21:11
The helmets are off the jetbike riders (had some spare after I converted the wych cult). They could have been better if I'd bothered to convert them all. I didnt want to do the stereotypical green or red warriors, and they do look cool in blue on their codex cover.

Managed to fit in my troupe master today, it'll do for now but I must go back and do some finishing touches to him.

LemonPotato
28-05-2007, 19:41
Congratulations on winning that golden WD.

I like the look of the eldar, I think that the weapons on the rangers would look better in the brass colour that you have used on the guardians as they seem a little too red to me.

Apart from that all is looking great, keep it up.

Better, although I still think there's a little bit too much red on them, and the pistol has a few too many colours IMO. Maybe paint the face plate black and make the red gun barrel bronze like the rest of the pistol?
Otherwise that looks great Chunk :) Very nice highlighting and good mud.

I like your Ork conversions, it captures the feel for them really well.

Regarding your mountain scenery, I don't know if it's the camera but that green looks awfully bright, and, in my opinion, makes it look unrealistic. (Perhaps you could use a darker flock/static grass)

I love your rust effects on the roofing, though, it really does look superb. Can I ask how you got such an effect (what colours you used).

chunk
02-06-2007, 22:48
Thanks Daemonslave, the static grass I used on the hills was regular gw stuff. Guess it did'nt photograph well.

The rust was done using the method from ogre kingdoms. Its dark flesh stippled heavily, followed by a lighter stippling of blazing orange. To finish off drybrush with boltgun metal.
