View Full Version : Painting Speed Freaks

First of all, I apologize for my english, because I don`t write it perfectly...

I`ve had a ton of ork miniatures for about 3 months and haven`t got almost anything done yet. So I thought that maybe a project log would help me getting them done. I don`t really like painting very much and I`m not very good at it (have painted less than a year by now).

I`m scratchbuilding most of my vehicles. The list will include at least 6 wartrukks, a looted Leman Russ Demolisher and maybe some trakks. I have one GW-trukk and a Demolisher that I bought second-hand, but everything else will be scratchbuilt. List will propably look roughly like this:

HQ
Mega-armored warboss (I just love the model!)
Kustom-shoota (shootier and more dakka maybe)

Troops
9 trukk boyz (sluggas and choppas and one burna) and a nob with power klaw

9 burna boyz (sluggas and choppas and 4 burnas) and a mekboy with a burna

Elite
2 Skarboy mobz with 9 skarboyz (sluggas, choppas and 3 burnas) and a PK-nob

`Ardboy mob with the same equipment as skarboyz

Heavy Support
Looted Demolisher (3 HB:s and some other stuff)

And of course a wartrukk for every mob. The list is (as you can see), not the final one, so some things may change. But that`s all the stuff I have now (except some trukks) so I`m not going to remove them! I`ll make some trakks with twin-linked rokkit launchas to get some anti-tank power. I wanted to arm my boyz with burnas, so they won`t have a single big shoota or rokkit launcha.

And now some pictures. At the moment I have finished just 3 boyz, warboss and one trukk, but almost everything else is assembled aldready. I don`t have pictures of my boyz, but I will take as soon as the batteries of my camera are recharged. I changed the way to paint the skin after first 2 boyz, so most of the models will look a little bit different.

the wartrukk is really good as is the painting on the warboss. The only thing I don't like is the grot. His pose looks a little odd.

ale
16-12-2006, 14:23
The grot should be hanging from the wartrukk. That was the best place to put it in. I`m not good with greenstuff so I didn`t want to change its pose so that I could put it somewhere else.

Looks pretty good to me though. :)

Nice trukk, it looks far better than the regular GW trukk, and the paint jobs on both the Warboss and Trukk are certainly sweet.
I especially like the way you paint the red areas on the Boss and the trukkz - nice, chipped and grimy.

Two little pointers:
- That Snotling hanging from the trukk looks bad ... simply because it doesn't look like a hanging Snotling, but more like a plastic Snotling that has been roughly glued to a Trukk. There's even some left-over bits from his original base under his feet.
I'd remove as much plastic from underneath his feet as possible and then glue him onto the passenger's platform of that trukk, with a scratch-built wrench or hammer or something in his right hand .... remember that Riggers are supposed to keep your Trukkz going. :)

- The Mega-armoured Warboss model (I can never remember how to spell "Ghazkhull" properly) comes with a metal plate on his head, which looks better if you paint it metal. ;)

Yeah, I know. I noticed it after painting the whole model and thought that I would fix it "later", which usually means "never."

And thanks for comments, everyone.

I took some pictures of my four painted boyz. First the oldest two. As I aldready said, I changed the way to paint the skin, because I think that more "extreme" highlights would look better on the tabletop.

And the new ones. The guardsman helmet is painted in the colors of my own IG-army.

They look pretty nicely detailed and well painted - certainly much better than I could ever be bothered to paint my little grunts.

Why would he like to leave his trukk, since trukk goes faster than he could walk ;)

Here`s the stuff I finished yesterday:

At least I`m making some progress (and pretty good looking models for me), but the army is far from over. Here`s a picture of all the boyz waiting to get painted. Behind them you can see my looted Leman Russ Demolisher. Some of the models have some paint on them, because I`ve bought them second-hand or have started the skin with goblin green. But most of them aren`t even primed yet.

And some more. Still need one normal boy, one with burna and nob to get my first mob done.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6302/daboyzxx9.jpg

I won`t be having school for about two weeks thanks to christmas. I`ll be trying to get the 500 points army done in that time. I`m not sure if I get it done though, but I`ll try.

Guess this isn`t very interesting log, because I`m just posting pictures of normal boyz after another with nothing special in them... :(

Your green highlights are getting very good, maybe try making the last highlight a bit thinner( in width not consistency) will really bring it together.

I probable the worst to say it but, try and spend a little time on the mold lines. It will make all the difference in the end (no it's not easy with a ork army, so many)

AventineCrusader
22-12-2006, 11:38
Well I think you are getting better with each Boy you paint. There is a definate improvement with each succesive group, the latest being the nest of course. Keep up the good work and lets see something else!

Yeah, I know I should. I`ll try to spend more time with them in the next models. And thanks for the comments.

Just another boy. Next I`ll paint the nob (I`m using a normal boy with converted power klaw. Much cheaper that way) and the boy with a burna (converted as well).

Luck all the same, look forward to seeing the boys all togetha.

Trukk boy mob done.

Here`s the nob and the boy with a burna. I don`t like this burna as much as I like the other ones I have converted. All the others have at least some kind of gas tank, but this is just a shoota with a head from some kind of flamer. I didn`t have any iron gobs (are those things orks keep front of their mouth called iron gobs?) or armour plates left when I assembled this nob (`ard boyz needed lots of them!) so it doesn`t (naturally) have them.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/3216/burnaandnobjv9.jpg

And here`s the whole mob ready for stompin`!

http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/6830/trukkboyzcz7.jpg

Next I`ll paint the burna boy mob and a wartrukk for them to get the minimum 2 troops. Maybe Demolisher after them.

I made the bases to the whole mob (similar to the base on the first model) so it`s completely done and started painting the third wartrukk.

Just finished the third wartrukk. Recoil on that big shoota is too much for that little grot. :)

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/6486/trukkbackql1.jpg

After taking the photos I noticed that the chain and the area near it looked too messy and fixed it, so please don`t note if it doesn`t look good in the picture, as it is most likely fixed already.

And a blurry picture of all the stuff I have painted this far.

Yet another two boyz.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/4523/boyzwk7.jpg

The three other boyz armed with slugga and choppa for the burna boy mob are almost done, just need to paint the metal for them. Then I`ll paint the mekboy and after that four metal burna boyz... aww... I hate metal models for two reasons:

1) They are awfully expensive. (that`s because I bought my burna boyz second hand)
2) The paint chips from them very easily, even if they are cleaned before spraying them and if they have varnish on them.

Here`s the burna boy I finished yesterday. I really like this model, the painting looks pretty good for me.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/392/burnaboylc9.jpg

Maybe I should get rid of drybrushing, at least with metals. In this model the washed metallics look much better than those that has been drybrushed. I`ve always been unsure how to make good looking weapons (I mean swords, axes etc.) without NMM (because I can`t do that). Does anybody have any tips or tutorials or something?

ale

Just finished the second burna boy. Only two more to go. I tried to paint some burnt metal effect on the burna and I think it looks pretty good.

I bought a pile of unused ork bits (including bosspoles, iron gobs, weapons, stikkbomma arms and about billion plastic arms) for very cheap. I won`t need most of the stuff (I aldready have shoota arms from three boxes of boyz), but bosspoles will be nice and iron gobs too. They will make the nobs look much nicer and look different from all the normal boyz. So the trukk boy nob isn`t done after all! Maybe I should give few of the boyz stikkbommas instead of choppas (only modelwise, in the game they have the choppas, of course). Diversity is always good on the models.

The two remaining burna boyz have their skin and mostly the clothes done. Not too much work till I can get stompin`! Very small scale stompin` of course, but even small fight is a fight! And da boyz like to fight and stomp!

I got a deja-vu while writing the last part of the text. Did I write the same text earlier? :P

That`s it, 500 points of Speed Freaks painted! Only 30 boyz and 8 vehicles to go. :P

A picture of the last two burna boyz. Sorry about a blurry pic.

http://img466.imageshack.us/img466/7241/burnassm2.jpg

And the whole mob. I took two photos, first without the lightning and second with.

I guess I`ll have a small pause at painting orks just to keep me sane. And maybe I should get my Imperial Guard army to 1500 points. It has been waiting for its last model, second Leman Russ, for about six months or something like that.

Looking good there ale. You can see the army improving with each figure and the last couple of burna boyz are very nice, especially the skin tones.

You scratch built vehicles are excellent, very Orky.

The poses you have used to make the Boyz different do make them appear to be jumping out of vehicles (any issue with balancing them or do you weight your bases?).

One thing I might suggest is for the bases (they are starting to look a little chipped), now the chipped effect might be what you are looking to do, but if not it is usually resolved with an extra coat or two.

Good luck as the army grows.

I have bent some metal stick and glued it under the base.

That`s just because the bases aren`t done yet. I`ll paint them again when I do them.

The bases are now done. I didn`t take a photo, but they look same as those on the other models. I should get those bits I bought next week. Then I`ll give the trukk boy nob bosspole and iron gob and after that get that Imperial Guard army done.
