Any ideas of what to use instead of the models provided by GW?
I really don't like the furry hats and the look they got going there.
What to use instead of them?

Use the search function in P&T, google, have a look at the Warseer gallery, have a look at coolminiornot.com, ...

The usual procedure.

I'm probably going to use motorcycles myself, if I ever build me some Rough riders.

I don't have much ideas about models though. I've been looking at BlackTree designs German WWII Despatch Riders. But they require some work if they're going to fit into 40K.

Personally I'm waiting for the Death riders of Krieg.

I got some Warzone Xeno riders. Find anything like a Dino or some animal that they can ride and then just add regular Cadian bodies on them. Not to hard. Here is a pic of mine:

My idea was to include them in a desert theamed army so the dino thingy might even work. Maybe use these http://www.gamemaniacs.se/uploadedImages/hi_res/31202.jpg
But I'm not sure of the scale on these they might work. What do you think?

The things demonetts of slaanesh ride. That's what my death korps will be on, and then my vostroyan rough riders will be bretonnian knights. In the modeling and painting section there was a guy who used cadians with elysian back packs to represent a sort of jump troup that uses the rough rider rules.

You could always hold out for some Death Korp Riders from Forge World.

Wooooo, hold on now. They will cost alot. Too much for me. But FWs Death Korps are really awesome, like most of the things they make. Man I wish I had more money to spare :cries:

Yeah, they're supposed to be lovely, mutant horses and all. Wonder what the lance will look like?

I know one imperial guard player in my area turned his roughriders into an imperial guard version of assault marines complete with jumppack.

From the pics I've seen all the death riders are is a horse with a gasmask, which honestly, interests me about as much as starting an ultramarines army. This is the one model in the krieg line that I'm pretty sure is going to be a huge letdown (at least to me), but hey, they aren't out yet, so maybe forgeworld will change their minds.

I think you can expect to see a bunch of conversions based off the Empire plastic Pistoliers once they are available.

shame the Clockwork horse is rearing up on its hind legs. a squad of roughriders on those would look stunning. :cries:

I had planned to make a small RR squad or two for my drop troop IG. Instead of horses, they'd have sort of hovering flight gear. I was planning on using the WASP gear of the Starship Troopers game and mount them on IG models.
The squads would be for AT work, as the army seems to be lacking good AT gear. 2 meltaguns and 5 meltabombs just waiting for a tank to bust.

Cheap option: convert them from goblin wolfriders.

Either of the Warzone or VOID minis will work as they are much the same scale as 40k stuff. (as much as 40k has a consistent scale!), and personally, I like the look of them. If I could get ahold of the old metal cold ones, then I'd use them as well.

I use a easy hover board/disk method. I take a normal base for infantry and glue another one (flipped upside down) on top of it and then glue the soldier in place (in the dish-shaped part). Then I glue that to a chopped down clear flying peice and that gets glued to a cavalry base so it has the right size. This makes them look like they are flying across the table without making them jump infantry. Hope this helps!

I use the cold ones from whf Just trim the inca symbols off glue grenades and the round grenade pouches on and viola. If i knew how to post pictures id show you one.

If u wanna have some hardcore looking rough riders try these:

http://www.fantasyladen.de/gamezone/gz06-52.jpg

from gamezone miniatures.

Best fitting with catachans and tallarns.
Here a whole squad of them
Mounts (http://www.fantasyladen.de/gamezone/gz06-90.jpg)

About the same price as gw minis but full metal :)

The easy option is just to get tallarn rough riders instead of attilan, they look much nicer.

It's in english (http://www.fantasyladen.de/englisch/frameset.html). Well I "found" it in english.

@Aragami: They sure look hardcore.

There is a thread not so far away talking about the same thing. I've added the links above for inspiration (not very original but still efficient and easy conversions). In case you have the bits box or any alternatives to do quite the same.

I want to see someone using Abhuman Doctrines add some Centaur rough riders. That would be pretty cool in my opinion. But I'd use anything outside Attilans.

I use both the Warzone and the VOID dinos as Rough Riders, although in different armies.

Also, in my Praetorian army, I have converted a sergeant, standard bearer and trumpeter, two flamer men and 5 gunner torsos with hunting lances to ride horses (all on some Kislev rider's legs). I didn't feel the Atillan look fitted my army theme.

To support my Praetorian RRs I have mounted some Tallarn RRs on camels (Black Tree Design) to emphazise the "Lawrence" and "Sudanese campaign" themes I'm inspired by.

As long as they fit the size, I say go for any riding beasts you like, whether horse, dino, camel, cow, bear or what else.

I`m using those as my rough riders, since I got them ridiculously cheap from one online store. 5 euros for 3 metal minis isn`t bad. I bought 3 boxes and got 9 models. I gave them some laspistols and cavalry bases and that`s all. Cheap and ok-looking rough riders.

BYT has a good set of them, they are not mounted, what he used (cant remember the site he got them from) was a cadian body, respirator helmet, and a flamer backpack with 2 flamer nozzles underneth and counted them as jetpacks, then gave them ork stickbombs, looks good, but then the only problem i have is that they dont actually have mounts which can be an issue with WYSIWYG

well by Codex RaW, the mounts dont need to be shown as they are neither weapons on wargear (p37). "WYSIWYG" is a convention/event rule/houserule anyway - as long as your opponent understands what they represent, it doesnt matter (besides, it could be said that they are "mounted" on rocketpacks :p). the biggest RaW problem would be using bases that are too small, but as the legal minimum is of the same width (but longer), it shouldnt make much difference (as the gaps they can fit through are the same) - i cant see anyone having a serious problem with it, and if they do, you could always stand the 25mm round bases on top of empty cavalry bases. ;)

yeah i hear good things about those, couple them up with some plastic cadians and you are sorted, plastics are easy to convert, one problem is the armour is more vostrian (Medieval plate-ish) than cadian (flak-plate) if you get me, so might look odd, but the legs i heard can also be painted brown and the armour looks like leather, hopefully someone can enlighten us with a conversion january time
