View Full Version : How do you transport your 40K army?

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, I didn't know where else to post it.
If it is, please tell me, and ill move it. ty.

Im now seriously looking into army transportation containers. (for my 3000pts of SM, 1500 Eldar, and 1500 of Orks.)

Im thinking of just buying this segmented foam stuff my local game store carries ( made by Sabol?), and put it into a US military surplus ammunition can.
It measures about 10 inches wide, by 16 inches long, and 14 inches tall. :p

Should i buy foam and cut it to maximize strage capacity, or should I just buy a generic case?

PS. What kind of cases do you guys/girls use?

In the end it depends on how much time and effort you put into converting/painting your models. If you spend a lot of time and do a good job, then Sabol is the way to go. If it is just slapped together, primed, then put on the table, go the cheap route with cutting out bits of foam. I use Sabol army transports and army motorpool myself. Then again, I like to protect all the time and effort I put into making my army look nice.

The foam = good.

Use the ammunition can as it should look good. If you then get any problems, use a proper case.

Take a look here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62270) for some ideas.

I have a Green case, as on display, and I'll either get another or I'll find an unofficial one. The latter most probably.

my "minute nids" are in a few tackle boxes. the whole army took me a day to paint, and they are super sealed and dont chipno matter how much i bang them around. my orks, deffwing and deathguard get motorpools.

I have some cool army surplus ammo boxes that I added padding to to tranfer my larger models. Kind of clunky, but sticks with my imperial guard tank theme.

I used to use pistol cases with holes cut out for tanks. I recently acquired an Army Transport Battalion and I don't know how I ever got my army around without it.

I use metal Canadian Tire tool cases (http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=140847439 6672972&bmUID=1167359742821&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441899459&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true), with extra inserts cut out of eggshell foam. They work great-one case holds my entire Tau army-36 Fire Warriors, 3 Devilfish, 3 Hammerheads, 6 Stealthsuits, 20 Kroot and 4 Battlesuits, no problem. A second holds a 1500-point Dwarf army, a 2000-point Chaos BFG fleet and a Classic Battletech Battlemech regiment (60 'Mechs, each about twice the size of a Marine), with room to spare.

Wonderful little cases!

What kind of case is recommended for magnets? i mean...generally is there any brand or store i should start looking at?

Takitron
29-12-2006, 03:23
Gensuke626: Any tool supply store. most people use metal tool boxes for magnetized bases. you could get pieces of sheet metal and fashion them into your case to make them magnetic (with magnets on the bases)

Gensuke626
29-12-2006, 03:36
Hmm...I should buy random scraps of sheet metal, find a friend with a welder of some sort and put together a small box of scrap sheetmetal...it's look nice and orky methinks...

but on a serious note...danke schon

I just bought one of the new Green Army Cases from Games Workshop and I really like it.

For the past few years, I've been using a brief and foam scavaged from wherever. The GW case is definitely better that!

I use the Sabol Army Transport Motorpool and two GW black cases to carry 3,500 points worth of orks around.

The GW cases hold all normal troops - sluggas, shootas and grots.

The Sabol carries everything alse but the battlewagons. The come in a foam-padded shoebox.

I have one motor pool from Sabol, two normal transports, about 70 or so trays many just on the shelves and I have 3 gun cases, a large chessex figure case and small case (the grey ones). I used to also use an ammo box for my tanks and dreads. I love the sabol stuff and with all my armies being infantry heavy it makes for easy storage on the shelves.

I need to find a good way to transport my Monoliths, Reaver and Baneblade if anyone has any good suggestions.

For now, I have one of the smaller GW boxes I got cheap from my brother - however, I may need to get a bigger one when my marine army grows. A friend of mine uses a GW box along with cell phone boxes with those S things(the things they use for box packaging. I forget what the material is called. But he uses them for his tanks.

Jamaican IG: One GW Black case for Infantry, a Coke tray for tanks, Sentinels and Rough Riders.
13th Company: One GW case. Some of the foam cut to fit the Bikes.
Night Lords: custom-made case from a DIY store, with foam cut to match all models. Makes adding models to the army a bit difficult, though.

I can fit even more in there than I originally thought! (http://eldarcraftworld.blogspot.com/2006/12/my-last-sabol-post-for-while-i-promise.html#)

Hope these are of some help to you.

Most of my minis travel in one of two froms...

A. tacklebox lined with quilting materail (batting is technical term) takes some hot glue, a few burns and 2 hours but it works very well. (vehicles go in large foam lined area in top)

B. plastic container with cardboard inner shelves lineed with batting and foam. this is good for odd sized and over sized pieces.

I have yet to have damaged any peices in route (knocks on wood)

Hey, one question about Sabol foam trays, since I'm considering buying some: is the 1/4" bottom in addition to the stated depth of the tray, or is it included in the stated depth (ie. giving only 3/4" actual room in a 1" tray)?

Thanks

I believe it's in addition, as the two are glued together. Not sure, though.

Its in addition, acording to their website. I'll be able to tell you first hand soon though, when my Motorpool arrives.

I have 2 of the standard black GW cases (the ones with 3 layers of foam, the 107 figure ones), one for my WFB Chaos, and one for my SoB infantry. I just ordered a Sabol Motorpool, so hopefully thats enough to transport my 14 SoB/Marine tanks and one of my Marine armies. Then I'm just looking for something for my other Marine army and my Lizardmen.

I use Games Workshops carrier case which they sell. You can get a small one which holds around 100+ models(30) or a large one which can hold 200+ or 100+ and 4 tanks(50). I don't know if they sell these in the US but they do in the UK

I almost bought one of the £50 green cases the other day, but whats the point in a case that only carries 4 tanks? Most tank heavy armies have lots more than 4, and tank light ones generally don't have more than 1 or 2...

Just how many models do you all tend to fit into a Sabol Army Transport.
Looking at 39 marines, 10 Assault Marines, 91 Orks, Ork Warboss (BIG), Predator, Two SM Dreads, Two Ork Dreads and 3 Killa Kans.
Reckon I'll be ok with the Army Transport or will I have to get something else?

I use the Task Force brand aluminium "Classic tool case". They come with a perforated tear-out foam padding (that all the army cases have) and padded hard dividers too. It comes with a lock (although all cases use the same key lol, so I use the lock only to keep my 3 year old out as opposed for security issues) and is very sturdy (i can stand on it and it won't dent) and very lightweight. It can hold an entire army of metal infantry models. It has an additional holder on one side to hold traditional tools, but it pops out easy. I get the box from Lowes, the price fluxes yearly between $20 and $25.
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=24981-16878-60132

For my other armies of large numbers, I use old style ice cube trays stacked in a large plastic storage box. I stagger them so they won't nest (and crush the models in the trays). Cheapest transport you can use, and it'll work well as long as the box won't tumble mid-transport (so you can't check it in at the airport, but it lays flat in the floor/trunk of my car).

My plastic marine models with bolters are all tossed in the cardboard box that my tank came in. I have over 180 of them (just with bolters), all in various stages of being painted (I don't do squad markings). Sometimes I sort squads into groups of 10 and put each into it's own plastic sandwich bag so I can just grab the right amount of bags and dump the squads on the table.

The size of foam for army transport cases vary. The case itself holds I believe 14 inches of foam. You can buy trays from 1/2 inch deep to 4 inches deep. Also each tray has a 1/4 of inch of foam at the bottom for protection so every 4 trays oyu put in adds an additional inch of foam. I personally can fit 3,000 points of eldar in 1 army transport case using 2, 2.5 inch trays, and 4 1 inch trays. The trick is to cut the foam to maximize space.

Another Sabol question. How large are the removable foam squares and how many are there per tray? I want to calculate how many trays I need.

The squares are 1/2 inch and the trays are 24 squares by 13 squares. There is also a 1/2" border around the tray that cannot be removed.

It's really hard to judge, however, how much you're going to need until your models are in one hand and the tray is in the other... even if you measure it out mathematically.

yes for the lith, I think that when I get that giant transport (3-4' tall) , about the same size as my travel bags, that I will do a double stack. Otherwise I think its using a ton of my trasnport space.

The titan and baneblade, I will have to figure something out or only use them when playing at home.

I use the FozzBozz dungeontrader boxes (66 28mm figs per box) for about $3 per box. I carry them inside a softside fishing tackle box that I got on clearance @ Walmart for about 10 bucks. I can carry 264 figs for about 25$...

Edit my bad - it appears I mis-remember the cost of the boxes $9 a piece so 264 for $55....

studderigdave
02-01-2007, 21:50
the cool thing about sabol is you can buy the transport bags empty and then buy foam tryas to fit your needs. for example, i ALWAYS use motor pools, since i like having everything in one bag (or multiple bags near each other for my 2 main armies). my eldar are mostly infantry and 2 tanks, so i got the motorpool empty, two 4 inch trays, three 1 inch trays and a 3 inch tray. the 4 inchers are for the tanks, the 1 inchers take care of infantry, and the 3 inches takes the walkers and wraithlord.

on the other hand, my deffwing got a different format. empty motorpool, two 4inchers and four 2 inchers.

If you are concerned with carry on luggage you may wish to look at one of our delux skirmishpack. Braced to survive as stowed luggage and the dimensions are such that it can be taken as carry on luggage. I've taken my figs both ways with no problems, other than a discussion with security about how a forgeworld resin phoenix looks like shaped C4. :)

Well, I just ordered a Sabol Motorpool. Here's the fun bit: I live in Europe, and it was cheaper and faster to get it airmailed from the US (even with our whoopin' 37% import tax) than to order it from any European retailer I've found.

I use a Stanley toolbox. It fits most of my chaos space marines (about 2500-3k points I think) except for some of the bigger stuff. With some cutting, it'll fit 2 rhinos and a predator as long as nothing is higher then a closed hatch on top of the rhino. And it only cost me 25$ canadian.

Plastic Seed trays

40 cell seed tray trimmed to fit A4 cardboard boxes (free from work).
10 for 2.80. Thats transport for 400 Guardsmen

As well as being cheap as chips they are very quick to load and unload and stack nicely into the back of a rucksack or large carryall.

May not look pretty but it works. ;)

Also from same shop, spoke very nicely to a female staff member in a red shirt (a damn sight curvier and better looking than the GW ones :D )

Result plastic trays that plants arrive in, exactly the same size as the 60mm IG Heavy Weapon bases. When trimmed can get 9 HW in the same A4 boxes as above.

A bit of overkill if you have a Eldar or Necron force but when you have single units that may have more models than some armies the GW cases just don't cut it.
