well it is what it says on the tin. im new to warseer but im also a prominent gamer in the liverpool are and try to attend as many tournaments as possible. i had the good fortune of qualifying for the GT final due to placing (roughly) 32nd at GT heat 3 this year.

although id taken my eldar to the heat, i feel that i want a new challenge to test myself with at the final. therefore im starting a new army ^.^ what army is this you ask? well i though the title told you :P my army will be a codex space marine list but will be based on the theme/fluff/colourscheme of the LotD. this means that i will be using a lot of grim and seath imagery on the models (one feature will be for scout sergeants to wear a "skull helm". this will feature in the fluff as their initiation a true bretherend. more on this later ;) )

well enough of my ranting and raving for now, heres a (blurry) pic of my tester scout. hopefully ill be able to get some better/more detailed photos up

till then, enjoy.

Looks really good from what I can see. I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures of the army as it get painted.

I'm watching this thread with intrest.;)

I really like how you've painted the flames. Very Eye-catching.

Seeing as they are LotD though, why not make their skin a bit more pale.

Best username in the universe, ever. Kudos.

The model's not bad at all, but the green seemsto clutter the scheme, shift it a little away from the historically done LotD.

the skin on the scouts isnt pale, as in the fluff ive written ( what with GW's lack of ....) ive written a few practices of how the LotD operate. ive adopted a method of recruitment similar to the deathwatch in which marines are inducted from other chapters. this "practice" isnt as known to the chapter from which the marines are drawn, except that one day the marine who has been suffering from "weird afflictions" suddenly dissapears.

heres a few pics of two scouts ive done today, im sorry for the quality but my skills with a camera are lacking somewhat. sadly the colour seems to be warped a little on the pictures and you can trust me they look a helluva lot better irl:

well here they are;

I like the fluff for 'applying' to the legion of the damned, but i really can't see scouts being part of the legion. Personally the LotD appear as armoured monsters, unidentifiable as marines, more walking sentinels of death. The identity of this chapter is shrouded in mystery. So, to me, scouts who have their heads bare seem against the fluff (maybe you could give them helmets? that could work really well if you used skeleton heads).

But apart from my critiscm i really like the paintjob, I agree with Tom about the green though. Your painting style is really nice as well, especially effective for a dark and sinister legion. I'll be watching this log with interest.

Your paint scheme looks great. The only advice I have is to make them more "ghostly". Remember these guys just sort of materialize out of thin air and aide the soldiers of the Imperium at times of dire need, attacking with erie silence (not even their weapons can be heard) then dissapear without a trace.

Is it a lost chapter, trying to redeem themselves for some sort of ancient betrayl? Or is it the work of chaos? No one knows?? :)

Anyway, I look forward to seeing these skull helms.

damn it! you people must be psychic or something, ive just been working on a skeleton helmet/mask for a scout this second (along with building a plastic scythe, more on this later)

thanks for all your comments. there will only be 10 scouts in the army initially, just to fill the troop choices with the main army being made solely of terminators (this seemed appropriate to me what with the fluff and rules aspect, plus i just love terminators)

more soon!!!

An interesting army. I started on a Legion of the Damned army many many years ago. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I'm sure there are but many of the parts could be integrated better into the minis. At the moment they look alot like skulls from the plastic skeletons crudely cut and stuck to marine faces. Can you not maybe sculpt a back to them, or a bit more of a back at least.

They just need a little something more. Parts just look stuck on really. Maybe painting will fix it, maybe it will just exacerbate it. Personally I would use a bit of greenstuff little bands to hold the bone parts a bit better to the armour in place and just sculpt contours and shapes behind the skulls the skull to make them look like parts of the helmets or death masks rather than just the front portion of a skull stuck to the back portion of a helmet.

Not to come off sounding needlessly negative, they are a good start and that assault cannon looks really cool (even if maybe the rotating barrels would interfere with the skeleton) its just thoughts I had upon first seeing them as you are clearly ready to put alot of work into these.

Good luck with this

I'm afraid I don't have any pictures of my LotD. They were a long long time ago my friend, back when I was a rubbish painter and conversions were something that happened to other people!

Take a look at my marine project log in my sig which you might be able to garner some inspiration for some marines from - although they are really codex and a long shot from the dark gothic look of the LotD - all gold armour :)

Feel free to ask any questions you have though about any ideas of conversion or those I have done. This has the potential to be a great project and you have some really good ideas about it. Nice to see the GW LotD minis haven't cropped up either ;)

Some green stuff is an excellent idea. It will just help integrate the parts into the armour which will, in turn make them look like morbid ornamentation on their armour rather than kind of stuck on.

Good luck, I can't wait to see more progress tomorrow!

Haha damn i was thinking about starting a log soon just the same as your's. LotD with a death watch type style to them, the painting looks good just thought the flames could have more to them like going from a yellow up to a red. anyways i'll be watching.

haha what with the GW price tag of £68 per tactical i think not. i should have some termis painted in about two hours as ive only just got up (night with lots of alchomohol and wii sports :D )

right im off to paint black and flames! back in a few hours, and btw i love your marines lol, ive read your log a few times ever since i saw the original marine over on B&C, i just loved the dynamicism.

and just incase you havent noticed these are the first conversions ive ever really done so sorry if theyre a little untidy at first ;)

right, update:

just been doing the black and grey on two more terminators. my termis from the net will hopefully be here next friday so that will help get this project under way at a faster pace.

thinking over some of the comments ive garnered here and other forums, ive realised that the flames would look better with some yellow at the centre and with a little gradiation to the layers.

after a little advice from my friend sckuzz i was able to come up with these "upgrades to the flames, to give them that extra "pop"

well heres the new flames:

right ive decided ill definitely be using this army at the final. im not expecting to place high so it means i can just have fun ^.^ .

Well managed to do the first scout squad, all i need to do now is the bases and theyll be done.

here is scout squad Morrigan. for those who dont know who morrigan is, hes the celtic god for death and all the squads will be based round different death gods. each sergeant in the LotD adopts the identity of one of the death gods upon being accepted into the Lotd fully. hence the scout squad is named after its leader, brother Morrigan.

well here they are:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/pacmanswang/LotD/DSCF1572.jpg

i have an idea for the sergeant of the next terminator squad in basing him off the hindu god of death yama or yamaraj. yamaraj in the mythology carries a sort of lassoo with which he carries the souls of the dead away. i was thinking of incorporationg this in the form of a hangmans noose hanging from his hand. what do you think?

the army overall will have

28 termis, 20 scouts, 3 preds, 1 whirlie, 20 tacticals, 6 pods, 3 dreads and 5 speeders (3 ass, 2 MM's) but the only things before march will be the termies and scouts

i had an idea to use a ballcock from a toilet, then cut it into petals and have them laid open. Basically like the old Epic (back then it was space marine) pods.

Should be able to pic up some from wilko's pretty cheap and then just need a damn sharp knife to cut with.

A question: Why does one of the terminators have a skletton coming out of his butt? I tried to figure out what it whas doing there, but I don't get it.

If it is supposed to be there I guess my opinion would be that he is better off without it or maybe moving it somewhere else, but not in the butt! =)

I imagine it'll be strapped/tied on somehow.

I toyed with the idea of doing a Chaos force based around them, seeing as they're so legendary, but sadly never got around to it. As a tip, if you use scything talons from nids as lightning claw fingers it looks like they're made of a set of tiny little scythes...

Ignore that if it's just me hardware, I like how you limited the bone to the front of his helmet, and the power maul works too, if a little too bright for my tastes. yeah man. for GT itll be 12 scouts, 20 termies with libbie and 2 dreads. after that ill be bringing in a pair of whirlwinds, a pair of devastator squads, a few vehicles and a couple of tacticals. ill be carrying it on after GT but the pace may not be thunderous if cash runs a little dry :P

01-02-2007, 13:09
I can understand where you're coming from! In my opinion, I don't find vehicles to be a too appropriate choice in a LotD force, at least in large nubers, due to the fact that they are the remnants of a chapter (and the Fire Hawks weren't exactly a long-established chapter), which is to be the basis for my force, so lots of infantry! But please do carry on with your inspirational work, I only hope I can do half as good a job on those there marines.

Sweet to see the termies all out in force, good luck getting them all painted up for the GT. The libby's skull power effekt looks very cool, as does his weapon and face. Thing is, I think I would have gone with painting just one shoulder pad blue and keeping the LatD scheme on the rest of his armor, rather than the reverse of that as you've done. He looks great, very nice blue and he certainly stands out, but I would have gone the spookier, less pronounced libby route. Go fig.

Also, I think I spy a mold line on his sword arm, and the blue shoulder pad has some nasty bit going on too - you can see the same clipper gouge on the standard bearer's pad. That said, I like how you chopped the crux down to get the shoulder skulls! Very nice.

@ Boss Salvage: yeah i was going to originally paint him as pure black with blue flames instead of red to make him stand out and then thought screw it ive never painted a libbie before and i have the bits left over to easily make another two so meh.

i think your method would have been the better option but now no one can moan that he doesnt look like a libbie :D

Wow they look really good!
Great job on the flames too, I wish I could paint like that.
The missle launcher conversion is also very cool, great idea. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing the whole army finished.

I'll be watching this log with interest.

perhaps give the scouts vengeful makeup ala "The Crow"??

oh and you have to name your commander "Lazarus"

Shouldn't the skeletons be facing the other way?;) Those'd be some serious AssCannons.

It's looking really good, a nice standard. I'm not sure if the Chaos marks on the Dreadnought work though. These guys are amongst the greatest Loyalists the Imperium has (barely) seen. Even In Death We Serve - and all that jazz. :)

Scouts - looking good with paint, though I was skeptical of the superman scout and the rocket launcher WIP pics. Like them both now, and the skull facepaint is great.

Dread - ahhhh cool stuff, though seconded on the de-chaosifying it a bit :D Also, is the second dread word bearers too?

I'll just have to stay tuned to find out!

right ive been a busy bee today. i recovered from my hangover this morning (was my 18th saturday) so i decided to get some work done on the pair of dreads and another small centrepiece, the banner bearer. the pics have washed out the blend on the yellow but you get the idea
well here they are:

Happy Birthday! And nice double dreads of doom, still rocking the chaotic markings I see

The banner is very nice too, the flame shading is rock solid even with these pics. The skull scheme on the terminator head is particularly nice on this guy too.
