View Full Version : To the Webway and Back - ExoCowboy re-does Eldar

29-12-2006, 15:00
Yes my friends, I got insane and started yet another log to continue the "To the X and Back" -series of me redoing my armies. And yes, I know that I should be doing nids and Word Bearers...

But to this thread: The reason for this project is that my fiancee gave me a box of eldar rangers for christmas, and I have to say these models are sweet. I already have a 1500pts biel-tan swordwind -army, but the idea of making an army of Altansar is tempting. To check if this could work, I will make the rangers as eldar of Altansar, who have come to help their kin - this way I get to play with my new models and also to see if I am able to paint them nicely.

So, I started today and made the first model - it only took 3hours + basing and varnishing, which was really fast for me.. this is promising. In the next week I will get him on the battlefield as a proxy of Vindicare -assassin, as my Ordo Malleus Inquisitor-Lord Jakob Solan is very open-minded and cooperates with xenos. So this is a great way to have a beatiful newly painted model on the field while I wait for the rest to be finished.

Anyways, I know that it is the pics you want to see, here is the first of Altansar Dreamwalkers:

Comments would be most welcome

He is from Altansar, a craftworld lost into the warp 10k years ago. He should look a bit pale/deadish :)

Thanks for fast comments everyone!

I can sympathise with the distraction, I've been trying to concentrate on the Harlequins, and not get side-tracked into Da Boyz, having picked up tons of old metal 1st & 2nd ed Orks on eBay recently. Not to mention some marines of Papa Nurgle... :(

I love the cloak, but feel that the skin tones are bit too dead looking, must the the Word Bearer's influence! They are truly wonderful sculpts, those Rangers.

I like it!

I suppose you are going with a more orangey-red than the purplish red that GW uses for their Altansar?

The cloak with stars is pretty hawt.

My codex is loaned to my brother, so I just tried to remember how their scheme looked. The red is scab red with old warlock purple (if I recall correctly) on top of it to make it richer, and blood red highlights. So, a bit more orangey I think :)

Thankfully they seem to be quite fast to paint so I might get them done sooner rather than later.

Not a very big update, but I have started to work on the second pathfinder, here is a WIP shot - yes, not much, but posting it here will make it easier to finish the model sooner than later

I love that Ranger ExoCowboy, he looks very nice. I like the stars on the cloak and gems look great. I also like the highlighting on the cloak.

I have worked on the second pathfinder. He is still WIP, I gotta tone done the highlights on the cloak a bit to make him more like the first one. But not much left. Like I said before, these guys are fast to make, takes only something like 3 hours per model.

Anyways, comments would be most welcome:

Ah, good progress on him. You might want to add a bit few more stars on the cloak. You're doing the excellent new Ranger models justice.

14-01-2007, 20:49
*sigh* I wish I could paint models that nice in 3 hours :(

love the cloaks btw. how about some (I'm getting a bit obsessed with this I know) Altanasar CORSAIRS :D

I managed to finish the second pathfinder, here is the pic (well, only the magnet is needed, plus I should clean the static grass that has stuck the cloak, and also recheck if the varnish did make some stars to be too blueish). So, another and better shot will follow in this weekend.

And, I also have progressed with the third, here is a blurry WIP shot:

And I have started the final 2 also, but they have only the basecoats done at the moment. So, these models are going nicely in overall!

Although the eldar -project will be a bit slowed down because of my Empire -project, I hope you stay tuned, updates will follow!

Looking very nice Exo. I loved your word bearers so i will hang around here and see what painting magic you come up with this time!
The stars are very nice on the first guy but i think the second needs a few more to break up the dark cloak a bit. BTW i reckon the skin colour fits very very well with the fact that their craft world has been hanging out in the eye for a bit and they have a slight air of taint about them.
keep up the good work

Looking nice Exocowboy; the stars are great. The eyes look a bit odd, or is that because they've been in Eye of Terror for too long?

I'm presuming there'll be some dark reapers because of the Maugan Ra connection?
Looking forward to seeing more.

And this time it is for a good reason :)

I finally manged to finish those pathfinders I got as a present last christmas. Here is a pic:

I am very happy with those models. So, Altansar will rise even more in the future I hope ... I think that next in line are my old biel-tan guardians :)

and BTW, can some moderator move this thread to 40k projects?

Very nice :) You've highlighted the helmets very well
