View Full Version : Hive Fleet Basilisk

03-01-2007, 23:07
Hey all, thought i would start a project log for some motivation and to get some feedback on my latest endeavour. Thanks again to Aalok for introducing me to these forums. I havnt played 40k in a while and this seems to be a great place to be.
well with out further ado i present:

Hive Fleet Basilisk

Hive Tyrant

Zoanthrope aka the brain

questions and comments welcomed :D

03-01-2007, 23:09
Ive finished the zoanthrope (apart from basing) and i will post those pics tonight. Ive decided against the blue grey skin/chitin and went with a dark red which looks better and not so chalky imo.

03-01-2007, 23:19
Rock'n start dude. Hope you can keep the motivation alive. My project log really helps keep my brush moving.

04-01-2007, 00:13
Thats a really nice scheme you got going there I really like the grey-blue skin tone Look forward to seeing more

04-01-2007, 01:22
i liked the blue grey scheme too in the beginning but have since decided to go with a dark red washed with a brown flesh shade ink and then highlighted with a lighter red. I dont know the names of the colors as im at work at the present but can post exacts later. When i get home i will post a pic of the fully painted Zoanthrope which is in the color scheme im using for the bulk of my army. I will probably use the blue grey color for my genestealers to make them stand out.

04-01-2007, 01:29
Looking good made, can't wait for more pics. The logs really help keep ya going, so hopefully you can finish your army.

04-01-2007, 07:51
OK here ya go. finished pictures (aside from basing) of my Zoanthrope.

kinda blurry (sorry)

Inquisitor Skyshadow
04-01-2007, 08:48
wow the zoanthrope looks really good man. howed you do the skull plates?

04-01-2007, 09:00
Much prefer the red and bone, good work, keep it up.

04-01-2007, 09:11
thanks for the comments. Im glad you guys like the scheme. I prefer the red to the blue grey as well! As for the bone plates i used this tutorial (http://www.figurepainters.com/tutorials/carapace/carapace.htm) and modified it a little. I just painted the colors on in streaks, the base colors larger streaks layering up through the lighter colors and finally white in decreasingly smaller streaks until im using a fine detail brush for the white streaks. Looks like a pain but its more of a time consumer than anything.

for my next trick... the tyrant guard. ive already got his two left rear legs done. I should have him done by the weekend. ill try to get some WIP shots up tomorrow!

04-01-2007, 13:32
That Zoan looks great man. I'm glad you're back into the hobby. Tell that soon to be wifey of yours that being a modeling geek is good for you. :)

04-01-2007, 16:47
im glad im back to. I think ive got her convinced. Now if only i can get her to paint then id be on easy st. lol

WIP shots of my tyrant guard comming soon...

04-01-2007, 20:31
ok heres a couple of in progress shots of my tyrant guard.. well... his legs anyway hehe. dont mind the green on the left set. I was toying around with some schemes and forgot to cover it up.

i hope to have him done by the weekend. I finally have two days off in a row so once hes done i will go back and finish my hive tyrant and then its time for the carnifex.... man hes big.

05-01-2007, 03:11
I can post a step by step on how I paint the armor plates if anyone is interested. I figure that since im going to be doing the plates on my guard tonight or tomorrow i might as well.

05-01-2007, 10:20
some more updated WIP shots of the tyrant guard. i finally picked up a better wash to ink over the red with so i wont have to be thinning it down so much. I was using Reaper flesh shade ink and it was just WAY to dark. I would need to only paint it into the recessed areas and then water down some for the rest of the mini. Now im using citadels flesh wash and its much better.

thats all for tonight. Hopefully he'll be done by sat so i can finish my tyrant.

05-01-2007, 17:18
Nice dude. I've used the reaper washes and found that they really need to be watered down a lot. The GW ones are better. Awesome progress. After you get this guy done, you should post a group shot of what you have so far.

06-01-2007, 02:04
yea hopefully tonight I will be done. Im thinking im going to go back and change the blue accents (wrist joints and stuff) from blue to green. Im debating on it tho so we will see. I hate having a good looking model and thinking of something else that would look just as good and you just cant have both. ahh well

06-01-2007, 21:16

Well i did go back and change the blue areas to green. I think it give is a more organic feel. Not so cartoonish. Heres is a pic of the Zoanthrope with the new green areas

And heres some new shots of the tyrant guard. Im about half way done with the carapace. I only need to do two more sets of stripes with ivory and then white and the plates will be finished.

Need to run some errands now but hopefully he'll be done tonight.

07-01-2007, 20:27
And the tyrant guard is done. Heres a group shot of him next to the zoanthrope. Im pretty happy with the way he turned out, it makes me feel better about the group as whole and how they will look when finished.

what do you guys think?

08-01-2007, 00:47
Good job man, but I would flock your models

08-01-2007, 06:43
oh yea i plan on doing basing for them. i just dont have the resources at the moment. When i do i will post some pics. I think im going to try something along the lines of Aaloks ash waste basing.

08-01-2007, 06:59
Good loocking stuff so far. I think the green looks better.
Just out of curiosity, is the name still Basilisk, as they are now red? And will the Tyrant be following suit soon?

08-01-2007, 08:57
I was considering changing the name to Chimera but i think Basilisk still works.

As for the hive tyrant, yes i just finished doing some work on him changing him to red. Ill post WIP some shots up tomorrow. Only thing that sucks is im going to have to go over some of the armor plates again because they got red streaks here and there. oh well ...

08-01-2007, 22:35
heres the tyrant in all his unassembled glory. man it was tough trying to manouver around the armor plates.

now all i need to do is change the blue to green, highlight and then redo some of the armor plates and hes redy to go. ::crosses fingers::

11-01-2007, 10:54
Well I finished with most of the lower half of the tyrant. ill stamp out his tail tomorrow and glue it on. Ive got a 1000 point game on sunday so i hope to have this guy completed by then. I included in the shot a wip carnifex head. Im really happy the way the tusks came out however it seems to have been washed out by the flash.

I also took some advice and inked over the green areas that show through the skin. The green was looking a little flat so this gives it some depth and continues with the gritty feel of the model as a whole.

12-01-2007, 10:37
im pretty much done with the venom cannon. i like the way the talons that are at the front of the gun came out(again they got washed out by my flash, i really need to take pics during the daytime). Im trying something new and i hope i can get it down so i can use it for scything talons because I dont like the way they came out on my tyrant guard.

C&C encouraged!

12-01-2007, 11:58
Ah, it's progressing. Looking good now that there are shading.

13-01-2007, 00:52
Majorish update of sorts.. I have finished with his torso, upper right arm and head. Add to this the venom cannon and i only have the tail and two left arms and then i just need to base him.

I had to redo some of the armor plating as it was colored red in the reduex of the skin. I also changed the bone sword so it looks more blended.
i just noticed the thumbnail on his right hand isnt done so ill fix that up as well

C&C as always are welcomed

13-01-2007, 06:41
Dude, it looks awesome. When I head down to visit I'll bring my 1000 points of :skull: DKoK :skull: and we'll play a game.

again.....awesome. :)

13-01-2007, 06:58
Hey dude thanks. Im happy with the way he came out. The army as a whole should look pretty slick on the table.

Let me know when you come out i would love to throw down with you again. Its been to long!

13-01-2007, 10:48
This color sheme is getting more and more popular... I'm glad I didn't go with it as I had planned from the beginning :D

Even though the plates are a liiitle to white for my taste, you've done a good paint job! Keep up the good work.

13-01-2007, 13:29
Excellent work. I really like the patchy effect on the carapace. The green also makes for a nice contrasting colour.

I'd love to see how this scheme looks on an entire swarm.

14-01-2007, 09:52
... hes done.. and at the last moment i ran out of glue, talk about timing.
Its gonna be fun seeing him on the table tomorrow. I really love this edition of 'nids. When second ed. came out I still preffered using the 1st ed tyrant over the grinning alien of doom.

well here he is..
Group shot

each model i finish makes the whole scheme come together more imo.
next weekend im going to base them, im thinking of using one of the spore cists from the BfM box and put it on the tyrants base to living things up a little.

Next up will be my carnifex....

self biased
14-01-2007, 10:10
looking very nice overall. my only real gripe is that there could be more contrast in the green bits.

14-01-2007, 13:17
Absolutely fantastic model, great pose (though he'll look like he's casually ignoring anything in base contact;) ).

Looking forward to the Fex

17-01-2007, 05:51
no real update except i finished the carnifex's head today. I will post a shot when i get his body finished.

i did play and win my first game with the nids. It was a kinda of wierd situation (team 1 Nids, orks and Eldar Vs Team 2 Dark Angels) It was 3000 pionts per side so we had 1000 pts each and the DA players had 1500. It was more of a training game to get some noobs used to the rules but nonetheless we won and i had a loss of only the zoanthrope and some gaunts and stealers. I must say i have a new respect for warp blast, venom cannons and spore mines.

17-01-2007, 06:37
Looking awesome man. That's a great group shot! You put my skillz to shame. ;)

17-01-2007, 09:29
HA Aalok, while i appreciate the compliment i think its far from true. ive always been amazed @ your ability and strive to come even close. Your krieg... hell even your other 40k and your cygnar are just uber awesome.

on a side note we really need to play.. when are you coming down again.

17-01-2007, 09:39
Love the colour scheme, I'll tell my 'Nid' son to watch your progress, he'd learn alot!

How are you going to do the bases?

17-01-2007, 09:43
i was thinking of doing them along the lines of a desolate dead world. pretty much just rocks and what not. I feel it would fit in to their fluff about how they devour everythingfrom a planet and leave it a floating rock. I may change my mind and add some vegetation so it looks like they are just invading the planet. On some of the larger creatures im gonna see how it looks by adding the spore cists from the BFM set.

side note im working on the Fex now so ill have some WIP shots up soon

17-01-2007, 10:08
i'm really impressed by this scheme, it's ace! glad you changed the tubes to green, it fits in more, and even more glad you put a wash on there too! - however i'd suggest a shade of highlight on there too just to pick it out a bit more.

they look fantastic together too, keep going!

17-01-2007, 11:26
I really love the effect you have gotten on the carapaces, the striations are very nice. Top notch work on all three models. Have you thought about how you will apply your techniques to the smaller models, such as Gaunts?

17-01-2007, 17:05
on a side note we really need to play.. when are you coming down again.

I'm planning a trip in March. I'm going to try and stay a week. Should be plenty of time to get a game or two in.

17-01-2007, 20:09
Have you thought about how you will apply your techniques to the smaller models, such as Gaunts?

I was thinking about that the other day. I really dont see it being any harder then the smaller parts of carapace that are on the big guys. Im eagerly awaiting finishing a good number of models. I think a whole swarm of guys like this will look killer on the table top. This weekend im going to pick up some more primer and will churn out a test model genestealer and termagant. Im thinking of doing the genestealers in my original color scheme of a blueish grey to make them stand out. We will see how it goes. I will post updates on my findings.

17-01-2007, 21:09
I thought to myself last night as i toiled away into the wee hours of the morning that if I was going to be painting the carapace on the carnifex, why not post a sort of tutorial showing the step by step process. I know most may only be interested in the end result but maybe someone can learn and use the technique to their advantage.

for those interested here is how i do it.

For the undercoat i use grey. Black can be used but the red color for the skin just isnt the same. plus i would rather just prime the whole model one color than try to mess around with two.

1. First I coat the carapce in GW Bestial Brown. It doesnt have to be pretty because its essentially another base coat.

2. I start painting stripes of a lighter color brown, in this case GW Vomit Brown. For the larger parts of the piece the stripes do not need to cross completely.

3. For the next layer i use a lighter color (Reaper Caucasion) I use the same method as step 2.

4. Next I move on to a lighter color, Reaper Ivory is what i use but GW Bleached bone is just as good. Same as before I paint stripes. There is no real pattern, you just want to cover alot of the dark brown but leave little areas showing through here and there

17-01-2007, 21:16
5. The final layer of color is a nice white. GW Skull white or Reaper Dragon white. I use the same brush on the larger areas then use a smaller brush for the edges and outer pieces of the carapace. Also I paint a small edge of white around the back side of the armor and along the top of the spore stacks

6. For the Final step i use a real dark black/brown ink, in this case Reapers Flesh Shade ink (its really dark for some reason) and paint it into the recesses and the areas where the plates overlap. I generously apply it into the spore stacks as well

And heres the finished product next to two of my previous pieces. Its a fairly simple process and took me approx an hour and a half including photo time.

heres another shot with the finished head on
C&C welcomed!

17-01-2007, 21:28
nice tut....

totally off topic, but I imagine it must be hard to eat space marines and such when you have two huge tusks in the way of your pie-hole! :)

Warwolt the skaven
17-01-2007, 22:05
Looks good, but I DON'T like that carpace... would look good if the strokes wherent so huge :(
Nice anyhoo

18-01-2007, 05:19
Well first you need to reduce the space marines to a fine red mist and then you just inhale them like a fine smoke. Or maybe that is just me.

18-01-2007, 05:26
I was going to say he would just grind them into a gooey paste and use a straw.

18-01-2007, 16:48
Good step-by-step guide! Very nice to see how you did that unique pattern. It looks very artistic. The Fex is looking great so far...keep up the good work!

20-01-2007, 01:24
Thnx, i hope it may help some people. The cool thing is it can be modified to fit any kind of color range.

On a side note I finally aquired some troops. 6 genestealers, 16 gaunts and 26 termagants. Im going to primer one of each and churn out a test model hopefully tonight or tomorrow. As much as i want to finish the fex asap, i want to see how the smaller guys are going to look.

20-01-2007, 02:14
I look forward to seeing them...

20-01-2007, 06:38
woah....your original grey and bone scheme my EXACT scheme for my nid army....if fact your bone carapace is done almost EXACTLY the same way that I do my carapaces....what are the odds???

Check it out:

20-01-2007, 10:47
wow your bugs are frackin sweet. I would love to know how you did it.
Its really cool we both had the same kind of idea.. im glad i changed to the red now then the armys would look ALOT more alike. They could be splinter fleets of eachother hehe

god job on your bugs, i look forward to getting mine all done

20-01-2007, 11:40
ok here we go, heres a gaunt test model, i stamped him out in just about an hour and half. Acidently painted two left arms and didnt realize it until he was done so i had to whip up a right arm real quick. let me know what you guys think. Oh ya i started basing the tyrant so ill have some shots of that probably tomorrow.

i think the carapace went pretty well. I learned a few things about doing it on such a small surface so i think it will translate much better into further models.

20-01-2007, 11:46
Very cool, a whole brood of those is going to look sweet..

20-01-2007, 13:20
Yup, another great model. I'd recommend that you paint the highest points on the carapace in the lightest colour, but that's just me. I'd also have painted the tiny plates on the tail the same as the carapace for more contrast, I think that would look even better.

Looking forward to the based Tyrant:) .

20-01-2007, 18:11
I'd also have painted the tiny plates on the tail the same as the carapace for more contrast

thats a good idea. Ill see what i can do

on a completely different side note I thought up the back story to the Iron Warriors army ill be putting together after these guys

21-01-2007, 08:47
here we go with another test model. This time the genestealer. The way i see it the genestealer always looked better when painted different from the army. They are like the shock attack troops without the need of the synapse and so should be separated from the rest of the hive. I did that here but tied it into the rest of the swarm by painting the bone on his head to match the carapace of the others.

you also may recall this is the paint scheme i originally attempted for the entire swarm.

Disclaimer: the genestealer here and the guant above are not finished models. Further models will have more attention to detail and greater care given to them. I just wanted to get these out to see what they would look like. (theres no shading on the green areas or real highlighting on the stealer.)

C & C as always is welcomed

21-01-2007, 11:04
Well, the idea of a different colour scheme for the Stealers I like, but make sure it's still very obvious he's part of the same army. The claws and teeth aren't enough, I think.
I'd suggest painting the large carapace either the same bone colour as the rest, or paint the carapace red with just the vertebrae the bone colour.

That ties them in even more, if that's what you want. Otherwise keep him like this, he looks nice.

22-01-2007, 03:59
Good ideas! Im still on the fence about the scheme for the 'stealers though. Its easy yet looks rushed and doesnt seem to be of the same quality the rest of the army is. I might just give in and paint him the same as everything else. Ill do another test model and see what i like more.

Im having trouble basing my models. Im using coarse balast from Woodland Scenics and its just not sticking to the base like i need it to. heres how i apply it (i hope someone can help or point out a better way)

I have an empty paint bottle that i filled about half way with elmers glue and then added some water to make the paint bottle about 3/4 full. It spreads on the base nice and thick and doesnt pool in places so i figure its a good consistancy.
I then cover the base with the basing and pat it down some, remove it from the tub and tap off any excess and let dry.

Heres where the problem begins, when i try to paint onto the basing i brush off alot of the little rocks and it flakes off in places and sticks to my brush and what not (and yes this is after letting it sit overnight so i know its dry). I cant get a good strong bond onto the base. Any ideas?

Inquisitor Skyshadow
22-01-2007, 04:14
The Gaunt looks amazeing per usual man, but im not sure the blue on the Stealer fits in with the rest of what weve seen of your army. He's well painted its just to me it looks like a unit of these guys is gonna stick out like a sore thumb.

24-01-2007, 10:25
well sort of an update. i got most of the swarm put together. it sure has grown from just the tyrant. Heres a family photo.

Ive been pretty busy with wedding plans and what not but i hope to finish the fex today or tomorrow.

25-01-2007, 07:55
small update: i gave in and decided to redo the genestealer in an all red scheme. It really does tie the model in with the rest of the swarm better.

Heres a couple of updated pics.

On another note the swarm chalked another victory up over some unlucky dark angels today. The carnifex was in close combat for 3 rounds or so and took every punch in stride eventually taking out the DA force commander, his command squad, and two lone assault marines. needless to say I started working on him again because he impressed me so much hehe

25-01-2007, 15:21
Looks good, the lack of bony chitin helps setting the Stealers somewhat apart from the rest of the swarm, but the red ties them in nicely.

Congrats on getting married, and also on whopping those Dark Angels:D .

25-01-2007, 18:08
Looking good bro. :)

25-01-2007, 21:49
well the scything talons for the fex continue to give me a migrane, so instead I decided to finish his barbed strangler. Im particularly happy with the ammo sack.
check it out

if anyone has any ideas for easier scything talons please toss em my way.
Hopefully i can come up with something tonight so all i need to do is finish those and the armor on his tail and hes done.

26-01-2007, 10:37
for the love of all that is good in this world he is done. Seriously you have no idea how many times i have redone his scything talons because they just didnt look right.
Well another one down and from here on out its just gaunts, stealers, spore mines and a lictor (unless any new models suddenly appear )

as you can see ive started basing the gaunt and the tyrant. Im having some trouble with keeping the ballast sticking to the base but i think i have a resolution that will stop the stuff from flaking off when i try to paint it.

Questions, comments, criticism, i welcome it all

next up: the rest of the genestealers

26-01-2007, 15:17
Well, you're efforts were certainly worth it, the Fex is my favorite of yours yet. And the Strangler looks perfect, the ammo sac looks just like a slimy, pulsating external organ, jummy!

The basing also looks good, if your army's finished I'm sure it'll look striking!

26-01-2007, 15:53
Yea, the fex is great, the strangler is great looking too. keep up the great work.
Are you going to patch paint the littler buggers now?

26-01-2007, 20:01
Thanks for the comments, keep em comming. It really motivates me to better myself and to keep painting.

@hiveminion - the ammo sack is probably my favorite part of the mini. Im really happy with the nastyness of it. Thanks for your input as well. some of the comments youve made broke me out of a painters block once or twice. much appreciated.

@ G_D - i plan on assembly line painting my genestealers over the next few days and then on to the hormagaunts. Then to probably break the monotony ill smash out my lictor and then move into my termagants.

26-01-2007, 20:06
Good progress; The carnifex looks especially striking!

i know you've already addressed this issue but I just wanted to comment anyway:) about doing genestealers a different colour. I've not painted mine yet,so my ideas are just theories but I wanted them to be slighlty different to my other nids. I didn't want a different colour as that would not fit in but I thought about changing the style of the painting. Maybe you could make them slightly spotted or do some kind of camouflage scheme on them. Like I said, just vague ideas.

Keep up the good work!:chrome:

29-01-2007, 05:54
Well i finally finished some bases. I wanted them to look sort of like an ashy rocky wasteland.
Heres the tyrant..

the ones ive done so far

a close up of the genestealer, thrope and gaunt...

in all fairness i wanted a simple base that looked nice and im fairly confident that i pulled it off. what do you guys think?

Some side notes: The genestealer brood is almost finished, I only need to pick out highlights on 4 of them and base 5 of them and they will be done.

Another victory for the hive! Some more crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside Dark Angles had their biomatter added to the digestion pools. I do have to give them credit tho. If it wasnt for two broods of termagants with "Without Number" coming back onto the battlefield my tyrant would have fallen under plasma, bolter and sniper fire.

thats all for tonight. I hope to have the stealer's done by tomorrow night.

29-01-2007, 15:07
Looking sweet! I expect you will paint the bases the same grey colour as the Hormagaunt's? Because that looks even nicer, IMO. Also, perhaps some larger pieces of slate to add some variety?

Looking forward to the Stealer brood!

31-01-2007, 09:04
Another update, the genestealers are done and based. Im still trying to figure out what i can use to liven up the bases a little but for now i think they fit the motif im going for. Even though the brood is small and they will grow in time, they remind me just how tedious mass amounts of rank and file troops can be. I look at the 42 gaunts i need to complete and its kind of intimidating. I think i will work on some gaunts then finish my lictor and then go back to some gaunts, by then i should have a ravener or another tyrant guard i can paint to break the monotony. oh almost forgot the pictures.

as always comments welcome

31-01-2007, 15:14
Lovely...er...I mean gruesome;) . They look very good massed together.
I know painting 42 Gaunts can become very boring so it's a very good idea of you to paint something else to give you a break (personally I just chose a comfortable colour sheme where the bulk of the body is just Chaos Black, saves A LOT of time:p ).

Just make sure that when you're sick of painting them it's better to just stop for a while then continue untill you've really had enough, and never want to see a Gaunt again in your life. Oh and batch painting is your friend!

31-01-2007, 17:02
oh ya, i totally understand when it comes to rank and file you HAVE to take a break. If I didn't i know that the models wouldn't come out with the quality I want them to have. I have a few things to break the chain with. Its going to be easier when I start my black legion again because they are all mostly black with no crazy carapace to work with.

31-01-2007, 18:34
bloody hell! those are some of the best nids i've seen in a while :)

01-02-2007, 05:06
Thanks, that means alot! Keep the comments coming, they are like uber inspiration. A few years ago i would have given up and gone with a simpler paint scheme by this time.

03-02-2007, 04:47
Well i was looking through the P&T and i found your 'Nids. And i just relised that me and you have the same colorscheme. Yours looks far better though. Good job on the project keep going man.

03-02-2007, 04:52
Great... and I had thought I was gonna get away from the urge to get a Tyranid army... then you had to come along and do this awesome paint job and a tutorial on how to do it...

Well... My friend wants to get into 40k with 'Nids anyway... might as well show him how to paint them! :p

Thanks for the inspiration.

And i just relised that me and you have the same colorscheme.
Id love to see your army! I think the idea of swarms of bugs all the same scheme looks awesome on the table top. If you lived in az id suggest we game together

Great... and I had thought I was gonna get away from the urge to get a Tyranid army... then you had to come along and do this awesome paint job and a tutorial on how to do it...
Well... My friend wants to get into 40k with 'Nids anyway... might as well show him how to paint them! :p
Thanks for the inspiration.

Im glad i could help! Let him know that the sheer number of models may seem intimidating but its fairly easy once you get a few under you belt.

no real update except to prove im not slacking on my nids. Since starting my Chaos army up again its tough finding time to paint both, and then its a toss up of what I want to paint when i get the time.

heres the next batch of gaunts im doing

*Evidence under examination*

Innocence proved. Subject is free to go. No further excruciation will be neccesary.

Inquisitor Hiveminion

PS: Good to see the batch painted models look just as good as the others. When they've got the striped carapace a brood of them will look striking, no doubt.
Are the lines on the talons the remains of filed away mould lines, or are they the actual mould lines?

On the lookout for more...

::Update:: finally this group of guants is done. Other than finishing the bases of course.

After the hassle these guys have given me im glad to be moving on to the lictor now.

C&C encouraged!

10-02-2007, 10:53
HA! I knew they'd look good together (as well as separately, of course, ahem;) ).

And the tree-hugging Lictor:) . Are you going to do a different kind of carapace for him? Interesting...

No comments here other than good job!

10-02-2007, 20:13
Just dropping by to let you know I am still following every update! Those gaunts are wicked sweet, jotting down mental notes as I type! :p

10-02-2007, 20:34
Looking good bro. Keep up the mad skills. :)

21-02-2007, 11:19
well seeing as how ive been so enthralled with starting my chaos again i decided i should at least show that i have in fact been working on my bugs. Ive said it before but just looking at the number of models i have to paint really kinda turns my stomach
I WILL GET THERE THOUGH, i will not be defeated by the hive mind.

Heres a shot of my lictor as he sits now, he needs 3 more colors added to his carapace and basing and maybe some odd little highlights or cover ups and hes done

As promised when hes done I will work on some termagants and then my ravener. then its troops troops troops...

*gives azironlegion some mental support*

Even though lots of Nids are a pain to paint to a high level (which is why I don't:o ), it is very rewarding, I've seen some Nid armies that would drop your jaw to the ground, and yours is one of those too (it's just not finished yet).

The Lictor is really taking shape, he looks fantastic already.

24-02-2007, 09:43
If youve read my other PL, you would know i have achieved a milestone at work. I have the ability to paint while on the clock  This opens up SOO much more time to work on stuff than before. I finished my Terminator lord and my lictor tonight. Im so stoked.. anyway, here he is (w/o basing unfortunatly)

I wish the white didnt get so washed out, i guess thats what i get for taking pictures at 2 am. I just get so excited about finishing something i dont want to wait till daylight.

C&C away!

24-02-2007, 17:34
I know the feeling, and I don't even have a log (yet!)...

I really like the way you get the horns and spikes to look good even though they are the same colour as the carapace, excellent.

Just one thing, you may want to check the left scything talon, I believe I see some grey there, right under the first scale...

Nice touch adding the combat knife.

24-02-2007, 18:42
oh dang your right, how embarrasing. Im gonna fix that right way

03-03-2007, 18:52
Ok heres some almost finished shots of my ravener, Basing needs to be done and then hes ready for battle.

C&C always welcomed

03-03-2007, 18:58
Nice, the scything talons are posed perfectly, they really combine well to make for a good, about-to-strike look. I also think your carapace work keeps getting better and better, and I thought it looked amazing from the start!

Perhaps one tiny little thing, near the base, on the belly side, there is a lighter shade of red/purple on the tail. It seems to me like it shouldn't be there;)

03-03-2007, 19:55
I think those bases look great. Don't worry about it.

06-03-2007, 21:31
well i finished a small brood of 5 termagants.. but the little lady seems to have hidden the camera from me. I should have pics tonight so stay tuned!

07-03-2007, 19:59
ok found the digicam

Heres the first of many small groups of gaunts. I have over 20 to finish and at a rate of 2 a day ill be done fairly soon

and a close up of the gun to show they have eyes

thanks again for the comments!

Cool nids, The guants look really good!

07-03-2007, 20:26
Looking good, I really admire the effort you put in the critters, although it must be hard work I'm sure it's very rewarding. I myself don't really like the concept of guns having eyes, but that's completely personal preferance. I do like the fact that you did them differently compared to the Gaunt's eyes, now the Gaunts look animalistic, vicious and mindless, yet the guns look more cunning, because they have pupils. Really adds something to the feel of the models.

11-03-2007, 01:51
Well from here on out the only things left to do are base the unbased and finish the gaunts. I plan on getting some more genestealers and 3 warriors but that will flesh out the rest of what i wanted for the swarm. I dont know if another update will be done (aside from the warriors when i get them) untill the swarm is done. I really appreciate all the information and criticism everyone has provided me! See you at the end..

I will keep updating my chaos log for that is far from finished.

11-03-2007, 14:42
Any chance of an army pic as well?:)

11-03-2007, 21:26
absolutley, once everything is done and based I will shoot a family photo and throw it up here

14-03-2007, 07:49
Well ive had an buy proposal for the bugs. I wasnt planning on selling them but ive havnt been paying them much attention lately as ive been focused on Warmachine and Chaos. I fully intend on continuing painting them but the decision has been made to sell if the offer is right. just FYI for everyone

20-03-2007, 03:41
And the deal is done. The bugs have been sold. However they have also turned into a commision piece for. The buyer wants the rest of them painted as well as the pieces he already had wich included another Carnifex, two boxes of stealers and he wants me to turn his HT into a Flyrant so THAT will be fun. This PL will see some more life to it yet! I should have some pics up tomorrow or the next day. The sale will allow me to focus on my warmachine and build up my chaos legion faster then originally planned.
stay tuned
