Post any themed fleet here: in the case of the Imperial Navy (or Rogue Trader air squadrons, minor human empires/realms, human pirates, separatist elements etc.) I expect to see a lot, with long-distance/strategic bombing or night-patrol or pure fighter themes (the last of which would be a mix-up of different fighter and hunter planes for different tasks), though in the case of other races it might be harder at first. A theme need of course not be a organisation/task-thing, but could have to do with this Navy (or PDF, or the occasional Guard) fleet's history and background, or its nemesis or whatever.

Also post ideas for themes; anything goes.

It'll be fun to see what will come up here :).

Imperial Navy interdiction wings

Mixture of light transports and Thunderbolt escorts for inserting stormtroopers or Naval Security maniples planetside. Possibly include a couple of large SIGINT aircraft (signals/intelligence) to cruise around at the perimeter of the combat zone and coordinate the deployment

Navy CAS wings

Waves and waves of thunderbolts or other light fighter craft carrying napalm, and very little else. Watch Apocalypse Now for USAF F-5s napalming Vietcong positions. Cool.

Interceptor squadrons

Specialist squadrons tasked with shooting down cruise missiles, Missile Command style. Protect the airfields!

Am planning on making an Imperial Navy ground attack wing using metal thunderbolts with resin ones for aces. Add in some marauders and its looking like fun on a stick.

Also planning on making an Imperial Navy interceptor wing out of original style thunderbolts (they are smoother looking) and lightnings.

Finally I want to make huge ork airforce accompanying a bunch of landas!

I'm seriously considering creating the Apostles as one of my squadrons (For those who don't know go and read Double Eagle now It's essential reading if you're going to play AI).

I haven't yet decided what my Xenos force will be but I'll be creating an appropriate theme for then based on the race and current background.

At the moment I've only bought Tau craft, but this thread has been working its way into my Death Korps of Krieg/WWI German thing, and I can see a bunch of thunderbolts and marauders painted in WWI lozenge camouflage (http://www.wwiaviation.com/lozenge.html).

I had a similar thought, doing Apostles and chaos. Cliched maybe, fun though.

I might try and theme an Eldar corsair fleet, using pheonixs and vampire raiders, which from what i know are the most common corsair aircraft (as there is a separate model (40k scale) for a corsair pheonix, the void dragon pheonix).

So is anyone going to go crazy and collect a full Wing (72 aircraft, usually) ?

My Bolts are painted up in dark red and are currenlty flying the colours of the adeptus mechanicus, cogs and skulls which took me a while to paint. The pilots of the admech would literally be part of their machines and would probably require permenent attachment to them for basic functions such as life support, so think dreadnoughts in the sky!

I love the idea of admech thunderbolts! So would you play them any different then?

Now this might sound a bit dumb, Ive noticed that we could practically include Imperial aircraft amongst all the races:
-Ork looted craft
-Chaos Traitor Navy
-Genestealer Cult infiltrating the Imperial Navy
-Tau Gue'seva (sp?) squadrons

The Traitor Navy is practically exactly the same as the Imperial Navy but might have chaos gifts/upgrades/marks. I dont know if the Chaos forces in this game will have these sorts of things, but if they dont they should have! I would love to see Slaanesh sonic weaponry, Tzeentch Daemonflyers, Nurgle biological weapons and Khornate kamikaze pilots!

Orks simply loot aircraft, they might fall apart quicker and have been modified with potentially more armour, weapons etc. In general I think the Orks should have modified aircraft, as in that the player could modify their aircraft by adding all sorts of small upgrades and changes.

Genestealer Cults could have taken such a powerful level that they managed to corrupt the PDF and local Imperial Guard/Navy facilities, so Cult members (might be hybrids) controlling aircraft and dropping units of hybrids and genestealers.

The Tau are pretty cool too. We have seen (especially during the Taros Campaign) that entire Imperial worlds can join the Tau empire, so what about fighter squadrons fighting for the Greater Good? Some might even have been upgraded with Tau weaponry. (imagine burst cannons instead of heavy bolters for example)

Well, I don't own the book yet, so I may have no idea what I'm talking about. However, I have seen Valkyries and Vultures featured in some the photos. Thus, in missions/scenarios that involve these aircraft, I'd really like to have an AirCav/Air Assault force, mirroring the 7th Cav in Vietnam.

Well i am looking forward to running some campaigns when i get the book, as i know of one opponent in my area so when i get back and get playing again i can really start to "flesh them out" as i hope it turns out to be as rewarding as necromunda to play.

Maybe i will just start praying to the omnissiah and bringing burning incense candles to games, wearing red robes, replaicing my eyes with digital cameras, my memory with usb sticks....ok down this way madness lies.

Hm, an interesting challenge. What was the average price for Epic Imperial flyers (of any kind) now again? You can expect me (or at least me, my brother and two friends) to do it in the future. It'll be fun to just have, but to use... :D

Well you can cut down on the number of Aircraft in a Squadron by saying that a squadron would have x number of elements and flights.

For example right now for my Epic forces I have 1 Element of Thunderbolts (4) and a Flight or 2 Elements of Marauders (2).

A Flight would have 2-4 Elements and a Squadron 3-4 Flights. So if I built a Thunderbolt squadron based on my Thunderbolts I would need 24 aircraft (3 Flights, 6 Elements, 24 Aircraft).
However for a Marauder squadron with similiar structure I would need 6 aircraft, since each aircraft is its on element.

My wing will be a composite wing, that operates under my recently painted BFG Imperial Navy Battlegroup Casius, in support of 33rd Macragge Corps currently enroute to either recapture Imperial Worlds lost to Ork or Tau expansion in their nearby empires.

I would like to see a Gue'la auxilliary Wing along with a Tau air group.

Think that would be the other way around. A Gue'la Air Group in a Tau Air Wing.

I've got 2 Valkyries (along with 2 Thunderbolts and a Marauder Destroyer, plus some Hydra and Manticore platforms for defence), and my AI book arrived this morning - the Valks can take Jump Troops which can be used to boost VPs if they land on target :)

Looks like I can get pretty close to my 40K Air Cav list in AI - in 40K I have 2 Valks, 1 Vulture, and 1 Thunderbolt so far, with loads of Stormtroopers and Grenadiers, and Command squad elements with FW Cadian respirator heads. Looks like I'll be ordering some Vultures for my AI force soon (as well as the some Eldar Phoenix and a Vampire or two, and Firestorms, which I was told by FW they were hoping to release towards the end of the month).

Greetings,

. However, I have seen Valkyries and Vultures featured in some the photos. Thus, in missions/scenarios that involve these aircraft.

I still remember a thought that occurred to me while I was reading Double Eagle for the second time. I had just gotten toward the end of the book and was reading about one of the dogfights over the Midwinter Islands, when a Phantine pilot managed to (successfully) bail out of his stricken bird and make it into the sea. It was at that moment my subconscious kicked in, and ruefully asked: "What's the point of bailing out from your bird, if no one is going to get you?"

During the entire course of Double Eagle, a lot of ink was given over to whether or not a pilot made it safely out of his air craft -- while, strangely, it never made mention of the Imperial forces launching any mission or operation to rescue/recover a pilot who had safely bailed out of his aircraft. I think this is also the case in Guns of Tanith, although I no longer have the book to double check.

Keep in mind, I am not including Commander Jagdea's rescue Guns of Tanith or Viltry's rescue in Double Eagle due to the fact that neither one was rescued by a dedicated prarescue unit. Commander Jagdea was rescuved by the Tanith First and Only, while Viltry was rescued by an armored column.

Needless to say, at least one Valkyrie will operate in support of my Thunderbolt squadron to rescue/recover downed pilots. Even if only for the fluff/background.

Thanks,
The Bluegrass Gamer
