View Full Version : Grand Army of Ostland (or maybe not so grand...)

05-01-2007, 14:59
After many years in this hobby, and several Empire armies, the release of the new book has inspired me to do another. And what better way to motivate me than to make a log.

I only have a few bits at the moment, a detachment and the book so far. Hopefully more will appear soon, depending on financial status.

Anyway, on to the work so far.
These are the first state troops so far, 5 swordsmen.

Group shot

Close up on one chap.

I've dug out a few of my greatswords that were being done in preperation for the new book, only a couple are at this point, and they need finishing off still

Greatsword chap 1

Greatsword chap 2

And a close-up of the second chap

And finally, my work in progress green of Valmir von Raukov. Enjoy.

General shot

Shot of bow

C&C welcome for any of the above, though I may not be able to post back again till Sunday.

Looks great m8:). I especially like the count.

05-01-2007, 17:21
The Green for Valmir von Raukov looks excellent! Looking good otherwise, too. Though I would remove the High Elf rune-emblem from the quiver.

I think it is supposed to be an elven bow?

05-01-2007, 20:34
I dunno, it looks like a big V. Which is qiote nifty.

On the subject of the others, they look very nice. Good, solid paintwork.

06-01-2007, 10:50
OMFG that Valmir von Raukov is looking good so far! That is awesome! I never thought about doing an existing count with the new kit!

07-01-2007, 08:36
i do like Vlamir. Nice work with the greenstuff there

07-01-2007, 08:44
Thanks for the compliments guys.

I decided to leave the quiver for a couple of reasons:
a) It's an Elf bow and who's to say the quiver wouldn't be still knocking around
b) I don't have the skill to sculpt the tiny rabbit things on it that the original model has.

I'll try to post some more pictures later when I've got some more work done and have more batteries for my camera.

07-01-2007, 10:49
It's cool to see another empire army around :)

Keep the pictures flowing.

07-01-2007, 18:51
A couple of quick WIP pictures of Valmir.

Shouldn't take too long to finish him off then I'll do the cloak and add that.

07-01-2007, 19:20
Looking nice!

07-01-2007, 21:03
Awesome conversion. Looks really good. Really nice and crisp painting on your troops too :)

08-01-2007, 01:13
Well, that Von Raukov is great, i want to see it finished, it must be amazing

08-01-2007, 01:27
cool, the colour scheme is very nice and the state troopers are look good. That count is very very awesome, nice gs work mate, the cloak is especially very cool and the paint job is also comming along very well cant wait to see the finished product.

08-01-2007, 17:11
Looking very good. The painting on the greatswords looks excellent.

The green of the von Raukov, did, however, look slightly like he was wearing a clown's hat, the pointy one with the buttons on :). it looks a lot better in the WIP shot, and the fur sculpting also looks good.

08-01-2007, 17:19
Like the GS work, nice to see a decent conversion of an Empire General.

I've personally never been that much of a fan of the Black & White colour scheme for the Empire - I worry what it will look like on a whole army. Be very interesting to see how it works out - the state troopers look good so far though...

08-01-2007, 19:39
Hey. I've just about finished Valmir, a bit of touching up here and there wouldn't go amiss though. But here are a few pictures anyway.

08-01-2007, 19:48
I also found a unit of the older Empire soldiers and got a couple of quick shots.

These got painted a couple of months ago along with those two Greatswords. Unfortunately I don't have very good lighting at the moment, so I'll do a few shots of things again in better conditions when I can.

I'll probably try to finish off the unit of swordsmen next, though it may take me a while as I should really be finishing a cosmology essay instead of painting. I'll try to do an update in the next couple of days though.

Oh and thanks for the comments so far guys. I agree that the hat does look a bit like that of a clown, but I'm happy with the overall results so far.

20-01-2007, 16:38
Right, sorry about the gap between posts there, I was doing my Cosmology dissertation and didn't have much time to paint. Now it's done I should be able to get back on track. Here are a couple of work in process shots of the front rank of the swordsmen.

Hopefully I should be able to get these finished in an hour or two.

20-01-2007, 16:57
Thought I'd try to a get a few more pictures of Valmir von Raukov, slightly better lighting this time, though I haven't had enough practice with this camera yet to get ideal pictures.

I've also started work on some Outriders, the first one displayed below.

He still needs a little more definition around some of the armour plates.

I'll try to get some more stuff posted tomorrow.

21-01-2007, 00:52
Like i said, the model of Von Raukov is great, the paint is also good, a nice model that show perfectly this Count. Congratulations

21-01-2007, 23:09
liking the state troops. Are you going to paint a design on the banner or leave it blank?

22-01-2007, 10:18
A couple of pictures showing the first two ranks of the unit of swordsmen.

I will be adding a design to the banner, but probably at a later date once I have more of the army painted.

Thanks for the C&C guys. I should hopefully be able to get some more stuff done in the next day or so.

22-01-2007, 10:56
Some great flesh painting there..

24-01-2007, 12:39
Thanks jasevx, I've done the flesh in the same manner that's in WD317 for the Vostroyans. In case people wonder thats the following

Tanned flesh basecoat
50:50 tanned flesh/liche purple watered down wash
Tanned flesh
50:50 dwarf flesh/tanned flesh
Dwarf flesh
50:50 elf flesh/dwarf flesh
And the a final highlight of elf on the raised areas.

Anyway, I've painted up a bright wizard for the army, though I need to redo the sword, the book and touch him up in a few places. I need to redefine some of the gold too.

So he's a nearly done wizard I suppose.

- Simply stunning.... I really like the Commander and the Second unit of Swordsmen

24-01-2007, 13:15
Very nice, glad to see another fantasy thread here in the painting section.

Is there any chance of a full army shot so far?

24-01-2007, 15:46
Your wish is my command

I should be able to get some more stuff done soon (I hope, though probably not much till the weekend).

24-01-2007, 17:13
Very inspiring work! I really like how the State Troopers came out. Very strong and coherent colour scheme.

24-01-2007, 18:56
Looking good so far, how do you get the pics so professional looking (apart from a good digi cam ;))?

Keep up the great work!

24-01-2007, 19:52
i use that type of technique for my flesh. Works so well

24-01-2007, 20:40
Curse you and your making me want to make an Empire army dispite all the other stuff I need to paint. In other words, good job and keep it up.

25-01-2007, 00:03
The pictures are taken by using white A4 paper as a background and then increasing the cameras exposure. I found I can't rely on good light up here in Lancaster at this time of the year so it seems to be the only way to get good photos. The camera is 5Mpixel by the way.

Thanks for the feedback guys

25-01-2007, 00:37
Ja, have you seen this¿?¿?

Look the cloak, someone have copied yours

29-01-2007, 14:39
Hey, sorry about the gap there, I've been getting distracted by other things, though hopefully I should have some spearmen done in the next day or so. Their clothing is already done, it's just all the detailing and flesh that takes me so long. I'll try to get something up tomorrow though.

@ Gonfrask: Yeah I saw that a couple of weeks back just after I finished my own one, it's a good way to tie the model to the old Valmir. Obviously there's some guy in a hut in Ostland who keeps churning those cloaks out. I love the green stuffing he's done for the bull on the horse though, wish I was that neat ( oh well, maybe in a few years...).

29-01-2007, 18:16
Really liking your stuff so far can't wait to see the spearmen

29-01-2007, 18:47
Handgunners Koraath, handgunners, militia and crossbowmen. Great models.

29-01-2007, 19:04
Looking great so far, motivating me to keep going with my own Ostlander army. I thought about doing the same thing with the general kit, I'm planning on remaking a couple of the old Elector models.

Looking forward to seeing more!

30-01-2007, 00:44
Necoho, the bull is not dificult, but if you don´t try to do it...but well, yet is late XD

30-01-2007, 20:02
Right, I haven't finished the spearmen yet but I thought I'd post a WIP to prove I am actually doing work on stuff. They should be finished tomorrow (or sometime tonight).

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
@Gonfrask: I was more commenting on the neatness of his sculpting rather than the item itself. I tend to end up with a lot more "chunkiness" to my green-stuffing. To be honest I just need more practice with it, most of my green stuff gets used to fill gaps instead of sculpting.

30-01-2007, 22:34
Right it seems I managed to do those faster than I thought I would.

I've got a second rank of spears and some handgunners started so those are the next things to do, at least until I manage to build more stuff.

13-02-2007, 15:10
Sorry about the gap there, got a bit caught up with other things.
I've managed to build the rest of the unit of spearmen, so I'll paint some of those in the next few days. Unfortunately, all I have managed to get done for this army in the last two weeks or so is this one chap

Hopefully things will get back up to speed now, so I should have another update in a day or two.

13-02-2007, 21:11
Brilliant imperial troops! You should be proud.

13-02-2007, 23:58
Nice colours

16-02-2007, 19:31
Cheers guys.

Right, the command group for the spearmen is done.
Unfortunately I have rubbish light at the moment, so I'm afraid the picture isn't very good. I'll get some better ones done tomorrow.

17-02-2007, 09:09
Nice, great painting as always. Good use of the head swaps on the spearmen; the pistolier helmets really work. Is there any reason why that was done on the spearmen rather than the swordsmen; I've always though of swordsmane as being more professional than the other state troops. Really good though :D

17-02-2007, 10:04
Right, a (slightly) better picture of the command group.

@Arhalien: I did the head swap on the spearmen because I only thought about doing it when I started making them. I suppose they could be a bit more of a flashy parade unit rather than actual fighters.

Right, on with more spearmen I think, I should probably try to finish a unit before I start something else.

17-02-2007, 11:55
i like how you used the pistolier heads on your models. I've done the same om my swordsmen command

04-02-2008, 20:28
good job, steveb
