Are there any set rules for skirmish battles?
Or can you just sort of play it a bit like LOTR.

There were Skirmish rules in the 6th Ed. BRB, which you can basically still use.

It is more or less like Mordheim, and you can easily even use this set of rules as well.

sorry but I dont know what Mordheim is
The way I did it was simply keeping everything the same treating each model as a unit-making rule exceptions for the increase in units-and made a pretty fair rule up that after each combat, if there was a charge, then the defender has to take a LD test. If they are not killed or do not run, then the next round both player roll a die after the combat and whoever roles lowest takes the test. This is like saying who was the scariest or fought better in that round.
comments on these rules please.

There's also the Warbands rules which are quite neat but they tend to come out quite weird at times.

Can't find my copy to check....BUT, recently (since 7th came out) I downloaded the Warband rules/PDF from GW, USA(?). Sadly no opponents were/are into trying Warband....for now anyway.
