View Full Version : Taarnak's "Random Stuff I Am Working On" Project Log

Ok, I figure it is time that I actually post something, so here goes.

This will be a log of any and all random miniature stuff that I work on. There will be lots of non-GW stuff, but the first few items are GW.

I would love to have comments, questions, suggestions on improvements, etc so please feel free to post.

Also, I don't know how regularly this will get updated but since I got a new camera for XMas, it should be at least once per week.

Thanks for looking.

~Eric

First up:

A redo of Chaplain Lemartes for the Blood Angels.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1487/lemartes1th5.th.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lemartes1th5.jpg)
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/104/lemartes3wp3.th.jpg (http://img244.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lemartes3wp3.jpg)

The sculpting looks rougher in the picture than it is. The knee symbols and the belt buckle are pressmolded off of other figures.

I am not real happy with how they look right now. I did the pressmolds to try and save some time. I may end up resculpting them.

He will eventually also have a jump pack that will be interchangeable with the regular backpack via magnets.

Next:

A redo of Marneus Calgar of the Ultramarines.

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/51/calgarhead1hq9.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=calgarhead1hq9.jpg)
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/9223/calgarfistsvr1.th.jpg (http://img404.imageshack.us/my.php?image=calgarfistsvr1.jpg)

I started this one about a year ago. I hope to finish it soon. It will be a gift for a friend of mine.

The heads are interchangeable via magnets. My plan is to make the base in such a way that the unused head can be stored inside it.

Next for this round is the start of an IG Kill team based on the folks in Predator.

Dutch:

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/6406/dutch2wy0.th.jpg (http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dutch2wy0.jpg)
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/3118/dutch3iu2.th.jpg (http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dutch3iu2.jpg)

Still quite a bit of sculpting to do on him yet, but he is off to a good start.

Here are some of the weapons that I have converted for the squad:

Last for the first round is a conversion 'kit' I am working on for my Cadians to make them more like the folks in Jin Roh.

I will eventually mold and cast this when I am finished with all of the detail parts. This will save much sanity...

http://img273.imageshack.us/img273/5670/panzercorp1cm5.th.jpg (http://img273.imageshack.us/my.php?image=panzercorp1cm5.jpg)
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/2476/panzercorp2hq7.th.jpg (http://img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=panzercorp2hq7.jpg)
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/2526/panzercorp3dz7.th.jpg (http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=panzercorp3dz7.jpg)

There is still allot to be done on the helmet and the bottom of the facemask. I am a little unhappy with how this is turning out, so I amy start on version 2.0 soon.

Those are some really nice conversions. Great Green Stuff skills. Looking forward to seeing these guys painted.

Inquisitor_Lorr: Thanks. I am getting better at sculpting. I have a couple completely sculpted minis that I am working on. I will endeavor to get pics of them in the next large update. Oh, just because I thought of it I work with a mix of Kneadatite (GS) and Apoxie Sculpt from Aves.

Fear Frost: Gonna be a little while on most of these before paint I am afraid. I have made some more progress on Dutch and will likely paint him as soon as he is done just to get the colors down. I do have a Black Templar that I converted and painted. I will try to get pics of it in the next post as well.

The Laughing God: Thanks. I have a mini update for the Kill Team later tonight, and maybe a large update tonight or tomorrow depending on how long real work takes me to finish. Getting closer to paint!

Cheers,
Eric

16-01-2007, 22:41
Well, the update for the Kill Team was delayed a bit.

Here it is though:

http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/9756/dutch4nc2.th.jpg (http://img157.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dutch4nc2.jpg)

This is the progress on Dutch. I changed the vest a little and added a pocket to it.

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/51/igguns2xk2.th.jpg (http://img442.imageshack.us/my.php?image=igguns2xk2.jpg)

This is the beginnings of the Plasma Gun for Mack. He had a light machine gun in the movie, and I wanted to use a Storm Bolter, but to fit it into the rules I needed to pick something else.

It is based off of the Catachan Flamer and the end of an old Plasma Pistol. I still need to sculpt on the cooling ribs.

More as I get it photographed.

The lemartes looks so much better than GW's! I hate that model! YOur marneus looks real nice to.

But im most looking forward to the predator kill team, i love that film!

And I got some decent pictures of the Black Templar marine that I recently finished, so here they are:
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/9619/bt1gn1.th.jpg (http://img391.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bt1gn1.jpg)
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/9616/bt3zw1.th.jpg (http://img161.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bt3zw1.jpg)
http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/2402/bt4lc8.th.jpg (http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bt4lc8.jpg)
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6922/bt5sb7.th.jpg (http://img153.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bt5sb7.jpg)

I tend to keep black minimally highlighted and it is not showing up real well in these, but everything else is decent.

I made a quickie light box for photos, and it seems to be working fairly well.

As always, any thoughts are welcome.

Some more progress on Dutch.

I am really happy with how this one is going, so I will likely paint him as soon as he is finished to get the scheme for the whole unit down.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Eric

Edit:

ryebye: Thanks. I will be working more on the Cadian/Jin Roh guard as soon as I finish the Leader for the Kill Team, Dutch.

Angel Robertson: I really hated the GW Lemartes too. Worst model made for the BA in my opinion.

That templar is pretty bitchin!

17-01-2007, 05:01
That's some really good stuff! Wooo Predator! The templar is really cool and the gun conversions are awesome as well. That plasma gun has a preheresy feel to it.

Here is another update for Dutch:

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/8467/dutch6wf7.th.jpg (http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dutch6wf7.jpg)

Probably the last small update before I finish him. I still have some work to do on the face, but the body is done.

I will post a pre- and post- paint comparison when I have finished him.

FearFrost: Thanks. I did alot of sculpting on him and I was not sure the paint did it justice. Glad you like him.

Light of The Emperor: I am glad you like the guns. I never really thought about the Plasma looking pre-Heresy, but now that you mention it, I can see what you mean.

To whomever rated the thread at 2 (Bad) but did not comment:
What did you think was so Bad? Any feedback is helpful.

Haha, Lemartes looks as if he's dancing! I of course realize that he will have a jump pack, but it's funny nonetheless.

I love your conversions, Taarnak. They all look so... real, especially Dutch. And that Templar... Kudos, man!

Ok, quick update on Dutch. He is finished now except for another coating of Matte Varnish.

I took some quick pictures just to get another update out. I will hopefully get some more done in the next day or two with good lighting.

http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/5690/dutch8ev6.th.jpg (http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dutch8ev6.jpg)

I went with a simple color scheme for him to try to get close to the film but not match exactly.

Green undershirt and dark green vest, green and black camo pants, and dark green boots with lighter green shinguards.

Well, I am dredging this up from the dead since I have had some time to work on miniatures related stuff recently.

I started work on another member of the Predator Kill team. Pics as soon as I get a minute to take new ones.

I have also started sculpting a werewolf band for Chaos In Carpathia. Progress on werewolf #1
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6398/werewolf2tx4.th.jpg (http://img402.imageshack.us/my.php?image=werewolf2tx4.jpg)

I will also be starting a Kill Team campaign with a few friends soon. I am doing a Relictors SM Scouts team.

Here is the current progress on the Vet. Sgt.:
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9550/scoutkillteamsgt1ou5.th.jpg (http://img402.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scoutkillteamsgt1ou5.jpg)

http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/7188/scoutkillteamsgt2eh3.th.jpg (http://img235.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scoutkillteamsgt2eh3.jpg)

The pictures are all a little large, so be aware.

As always comments, questions, and criticism welcomed.

Cheers,
Eric

One month between updates I can understand. Four months is waaay too unacceptable; especially given the calibre of work. We need our fix of nice figs here.

The werewolf has a very dynamic pose. Looks great.

And, from what I see of the Scout Sgt, very nice!

Taarnak
16-06-2007, 00:53
Thanks no-use, I appreciate the kind words.

Here is an update on the Scout Sgt:
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/3888/scoutkillteamsgt3yd3.th.jpg (http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scoutkillteamsgt3yd3.jpg)

(Pictures were taken in kind of a rush, so they are kinda crappy, sorry.)

He still needs a couple pieces of gear (camo cloak and his power weapon), decals, weathering, and a base.

No other pics yet but I have done more work on the Werewolf and the other members of the scout team. I also started making some Cadian Stormtroopers/Arbites/Vets (not sure what they are yet...) out of Cadian and SM Scout parts that I will get put up here as soon as I get the test fig finished.

Ok, small update on the Kill Team Sgt. Real work has been kicking my butt lately and I have not had time for much modelling.

He still needs his power weapon and camo cloak, and after those are added he needs varnished. Everything else is done on him.

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3736/scoutkillteamsgt4sz8.th.jpg (http://img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scoutkillteamsgt4sz8.jpg)

I decided on a marking scheme for these guys. Left shoulder will have Chapter symbol. Right shoulder will display squad number and the type of squad that the member used to belong to (Veteran, Tactical, Assault, Devastator). Left knee will display any specialty markings.

In the case of the Sgt. here, he has the Crux (Veteran) and an "I" on his Right shoulder for the 1st scout squad, and a skull on his left knee to indicate that he is a member of the Chaplain corpse. I know this is somewhat unorthodox, but I like it. :)

On a somewhat related note, I did the decals on paper that I got from Micro Mark awhile back. It is kinda thick and I was having a helluva time getting the decals to set on the curved surface (and to keep them from sticking up.) I picked up some Micro Sol and Micro Set while I was at the hobby shop the other day. Dear gods that is some amazing stuff! Once you get the hang of using it, you can get the decals to conform to just about any surface. Highly recommended!

Just thought I would share that.

As always, comments and criticism appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7439/armoredwomanez6.th.jpg (http://img404.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armoredwomanez6.jpg)

She still needs eyelids and her nose finished on her face. The body is pretty much done except for the small details. Arms are really just started. She will be holding a mace or hammer in her right hand and a shield in her left.

She is also found here on The Sculpting Thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1771482#post1771482).

Ok, update time again finally...

Real life has sucked for the past month and a half. One crappy thing after another, including finding out (after 30 years) that my Dad isn't my real father.

Anyway, miniatures-wise I have decided to take part in the Tale Of Poor Sculptors (http://warseer.com/forums/general-project-logs/99818-the-tale-of-poor-sculptors-tops.html), so here is the current progress on one of my sculpts for that:
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2448/korhil1oo3.th.jpg (http://img259.imageshack.us/my.php?image=korhil1oo3.jpg)

I have some paining done on another Relictors Scout so I will get pics of that up as soon as I can take some.

~Eric

Edit:
Mr.chair: No, the head is a modified Catachan head. Although, it is so heavily modified that I maybe should have just sculpted it myself...

Mr.chair
26-09-2007, 20:53
Ah, I've been down that road before when I was converting some Ogryns from ogre Kingdoms models. I'm not very good at getting the head proportiosn right but remaking a face isn't so bad. It always pisses me off that there are no black dudes in the world of the future. You did a good job of remaking the face. He looks bad to the bone.

Taarnak
27-09-2007, 00:00
Mr.chair: Thanks. Glad you like what I did with him. I hoped he didn't look too cartoon-ish.

I imagine the lack of peoples other than Caucasian is mainly due to the fact that most of the sculptors are "white." Generally speaking, people are most comfortable with those things most familiar to them, and so we have sculptors who mostly sculpt white guys.

Also, I visited your log and I must say I liked what I saw there. Great work on those Ogryn. Very characterful.

Update for my version of Korhil:
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/2686/korhil3zc6.th.jpg (http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=korhil3zc6.jpg)

Work mostly done on the armored skirt on his right leg. The top row of scales will get finished after they cure.

The breastplate needs much scraping and filing after it cures to get the shape I want.

Right arm is mostly done. Need to do the axe and attach it along with the hand there. Still no work on the left arm because I am debating the pose for it.

Head has had a ball of putty made for the base of it, but nothing more.

Still working on how I want the greaves to look, hence no change there.

~Eric

Mr.chair
05-10-2007, 04:19
Not bad. I'd like to take the time to learn to sculpt myself, but that'll have to wait for a later date. Have you though about a scalloped look for the greaves? It's a neat style. Keep it up!

Update for Korhil:
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8629/korhil5kn4.th.jpg (http://img153.imageshack.us/my.php?image=korhil5kn4.jpg)
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8359/korhil5blu5.th.jpg (http://img341.imageshack.us/my.php?image=korhil5blu5.jpg)

As you may be able to tell, I have extensively reworked the torso. It was a little too thin, and I decided to try to tie him into the current range with the detailing on the chest.

Got the hand on the axe pretty much done. Just need to attach it to the arm now.

I am pretty happy with this head and face.Once I attach it to the body and sculpt the hair on it, I think it will work well.

Mr.chair: Do you have any pictures of the scalloped style that you are talking about? I know I should know it, but...

Syntha Urban War force that I am coming back to working on again:

Proof that I have been working on my Scout Kill Team:
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5527/scoutkillteamclosecombaaz0.th.jpg (http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scoutkillteamclosecombaaz0.jpg)

Tried out a new technique for the paint chips. Tried adding a highlight along the top edge of them to make them pop more. Think I was a little too subtle with it though. Just doesn't look right to me. I will most likely go back to the look used on the other two.

Oh, the arm is way too long on him (and all the others too now that I look at it) but that is the only way I can seem to make them look right with the shoulder pads. That is my story and I am sticking to it...

Apologies for the double post. Image limit made me do it. :D

As always, thoughts, criticisms, etc. appreciated.

Yet another game that I am working on figures for is SuperSystem.

Here is a repaint (and conversion) of a Jean Grey figure:
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8281/jeangrey1bl5.th.jpg (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jeangrey1bl5.jpg)

She needs to have her face and hair finished and then a matte varnish to get rid of the gloss varnish shine.

~Eric

Edit:
I will likely discontinue this log if no-one else shows any interest in it. I really don't mean to sound whiny (and I know that kinda does) but as I find myself with limited time lately, posting updates seems like a waste of it if no-one cares. Again, sorry to sound whiney. I really don't mean to be.

Last update for this log. Either my stuff sucks and no one is wanting to tell me that, or I have put people off somehow. I dunno, but it does at this point seem like a waste of time to continue.

From now on I will post individual items in M,P & T General when I finish them.

Anyway, here is the finished HeroClix repaint:
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/1939/jeangrey2jr5.th.jpg (http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jeangrey2jr5.jpg)
