View Full Version : Finishing Tau army

10-01-2007, 13:36
Hi all

I finally decided to make my own a blog to get my tau army done and I have to say here are some really great blogs which have given me lots of inspiration.

Here is a list of what I have done:

I still have to buy at least one devilfish and when I finish this army I will move to next project and keep updating this blog.
Here is list of what else I'm going to paint:
-some Death Korps, not probably going to do a whole army, just paint few squads for fun
- ~80 old metal Space Ork, most of them can be seen
here (http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/index.htm) (scroll down)
- Dwarf army for FB (will be pretty much speed painted)
- some Rackham miniatures

Updates for Tau soon, so keep watching!

Oh man I love your tau, especially that broadside firing missiles! Have you converted the rest of the XV's?

I really like how you've captured the motion of the battle through missiles / rifles / flame firing its really nice.

Keep it up!

Your XV8s look great, like Big Mecha Flying Ninjas, and that's the way XV8s are supposed to look, I presume.

10-01-2007, 14:40
WOW! Those look great. It's tough making an army look good when the majority of the model is black. Awesome stuff.

10-01-2007, 15:06
@Crazed_monkey: yes, all XVs will be converted.

@no-use4a-name: Thanks. In fact all the dark areas are basecoated with mix of black and wolf grey, so they are really dark grey blue. In my screen I can see the real colour clearly though.

Thanks for comments.

10-01-2007, 17:49
Really cool conversions and lighting effects!

10-01-2007, 18:32
Thanks FearFrost, btw your Eldars are awesome!

Time for...
++first update++:D
Sniper Drone Team Controller:
scroll to death...

My break from Tau started in October and this is the only tau mini I painted during that break which lasted to this day. So I painted this about two months ago, and now I finally added the snow and took pics.

To correct my first post I have only 3 battlesuits (+FW broadside) left to paint. Now I started painting the second XV89. Metals are done and basecoat painted (sorry about poor pics):

10-01-2007, 18:42
Wow, some beautiful (& exciting!) Tau you've got here! So much so that I just ordered up some Tau to start a 500-point army for my birthday ...

You're an evil, evil person :( ... and exceptionally talented ;)

- Salvage

10-01-2007, 19:37
Those are certainly excellent conversions, and your models are very well painted. I'd never have conversions like that though, they'd be a bit impractical gaming wise.

10-01-2007, 20:31
Not too impractical if it's steel rod cores.

Anyway, that is amazing. Can't wait until you're finished with the Vespid. My only "ultra-minor complaint" about the excellent Vespid models is that their heads should have been less lean and more like the one in the drawing.

The Laughing God
10-01-2007, 20:35
They look really good, I like your color scheme a lot. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to seeing the army finished.

10-01-2007, 20:41
Beautiful work. They look awesome. Keep it coming. I'm really beginning to admire all these glass display shelves everyone has. I just may need to stop by IKEA. ;)

12-01-2007, 13:44
Thanks for comments.

Here is current process of the XV89:

I won't have anymore time to paint today, but I will finish it tomorrow.
also I went to local crafts store and bought some stuff:

The deko-snow is what I use as a paste for baking soda, and I bought brown glaze because of Aalok's great Krieg blog (before I've just mixed different brown with glaze medium so with this it'll be a bit easier and faster). After seeing Mika's awesome traitors I had to buy some Tamiya Clear Orange too.

12-01-2007, 14:24
really, i mean really nice. the flamer effect is just great.

12-01-2007, 20:45
Really like your commander and xv8s they look so dynamic!
I really like the firing XV89 suit, i have 2 myself but no where near as nice as yours.

12-01-2007, 21:22
;1208439']Not too impractical if it's steel rod cores.

I don't mean in that they'd break, I mean that obviously they take up more space, and so are harder to fit in buildings etc.; they're all very individual so probably look a bit odd as a full squad and are quite specific - the firing ones, for example, would look silly when they got into combat.

The Iron Duke
12-01-2007, 23:07
I love the colour-scheme. Works well with the snow. I agree with Mr. L. J. about the problems with the firing models, but they're still well-done. My favorite ones you've done are the Gue'vasa. Nice work.

14-01-2007, 12:05
Thanks for comments. I have to admit that the effects may look a bit odd in close combat but I don't think it's much more tragic than having a miniature rising his close combat weapon when shooting for example.

finished XV89:

big collase (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/e71dc2fe-1.jpg) (200kb)
more dramatic angles (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/e71dc2fe-2.jpg)

...and with his pals:

This is what I'm painting now:

Really nice looking tau you have there! How have you done the melta and flamer effects? What scheme are the vepid going to be?

14-01-2007, 12:37
yeah, they all look fantastic! i love the flamer effect - what did you use?

14-01-2007, 12:55
Very nice. Agreed with SC, the flame effect is nice, as is the plasma.Keep it up :D

14-01-2007, 12:57
Flame effect:
1. I bended th base frame of flame from wire and pinned it to the muzzle
2. covered it with Magic Sculp (similiar to GS)
2. sculpted it roughly to the shape of flame
Here is an old WIP pic, I found from my photobucket:

1. I pinned straight piece of plastic rod to th muzzle
2. covered the tip with Magic Sculp and smoothened it
3. did the final form by pressing it with some round shaped object

The scheme of vespid will mostly be the same as in my first post, but I'll probably do some minor changes.

15-01-2007, 16:15
ummm.. double post...

The two Vespids are done:

With an old friend... (the one in the back) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/862d69f3.jpg)

I've still got three more of these to go, but as the rest of them aren't even assembled yet, I'll now paint four firewarriors:

...and, well, here is a pic of my WIP shelf:
As you can see I'll run out of primed minis soon and then I'll do some more bases and assemble/convert the most of remaining minis.

15-01-2007, 16:26
The plasma affect look like a transformer toy, but the flamer affect ruined my trousers. Good job on the army!

The Laughing God
15-01-2007, 16:56
I really like the Vespids! Great job love the Greyish-Blue color for your army it's awesome, and looks really good with Tau. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing more updated on these guys.

17-01-2007, 20:16
Thanks for comments.

I've now painted the four firewarriors:
It feels like those took me ages to paint... firewarriors are definately the one of the thoughest units to make look good.

two different views (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/3712734c-3.jpg)
the whole third FW squad (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/3712734c.jpg)

Now I'm going to take a break from painting (not for long time, eh) and start cleaning all those frikkin great mould lines and putting more figs together.
First victim will be the broadside:

I've got the base done already. Any suggestions for the pose?

Rogue 7
17-01-2007, 20:40
I've always been a fan of the "Legs spread, bracing to fire" type-pose, raising the arms slightly . Looks very badass. All your models look incredible, btw.

17-01-2007, 20:58
Can't wait for more mate! The army looks amazing so far! makes me want to break out my Tau and paint them! Perhaps I will eventually!

20-01-2007, 13:29
Cheers for comments.
Heh, seems that someone have been sniping the blog ratings .

Here's a minor update:

I had a really bad day in Thursday and I managed to break both ankles of the broadside. Now I've fixed it by pinning the feets. I'll post more pics later this day when I get the whole model assembled.

20-01-2007, 13:36
Its a common fault with the boadsides. Are you having any Guvesa?

I still have two leaders left from selling my Tau Army, if you want them.

20-01-2007, 14:06
@jasevx: Take a look at my first post, there's a list of what I've already done and there are also Gue'vesas. Thanks for the offer, but I think only thing I still need is the Devilfish for the pathfinders.

20-01-2007, 14:16
Just saw these, they all look great! Love what you did with those battlesuit nice work!

Warwolt the skaven
20-01-2007, 14:47
just awesome man, just awesome. :D

21-01-2007, 15:04
Thanks for comments.

Here's some update.
Broadside finished:

I think I am quite happy about how the pose came out. I shortened the ruined pillar behind him to make the painting easier.

I assembled the XV84 also:

Now I'll do the remaining drones and make more bases for them:

Thanks to gw, I got a spare railgun sprue from sniper drone set, it could make a real nice pathfinder I think:

21-01-2007, 15:30

Beware the toilet paper banner!

In all seriousness, very, very nice job. Especially the lights! A tut on how to do them please?

21-01-2007, 15:56
Beware the toilet paper banner!

In all seriousness, very, very nice job. Especially the lights! A tut on how to do them please?

:D Those banners I made a half year ago, they look bit pathetic now.
You mean the blue glowing? First I painted a basecoat with vallejo lightning blue. Then I painted couple thin layers towards the light by adding white to the blue, the last highlight was almost white.

21-01-2007, 16:25
A questiong about the broadisde (as I'll be getting a couple soon) I see that the railguns come with what looks likea power cuplink style cable are these easy to get connected since the big guy can be posed so differently I assume you'd need to bend them a bit.

So have you found any difficulty with them?

also their looking great!

Well those are the most complicated part. And yes, I had to bend them with hot water and shorten them to get them fit. The right cable of the broadside broke when I bended it but that actually helped to make it fit better, I added then some putty to the gap.

21-01-2007, 16:39
very nice looking tau army, looking forward to seeing the suits done. you've got the glowing weapons down to a tea:cool:

keep up the great work.

22-01-2007, 12:55
Gorgeous work and making me feel quite inadequate! I absolutely adore the flamethrower effect and its nice to see someone else using the ammo feed on the 88-2s I have seen some people that leave them off as they can be difficult to fit.

22-01-2007, 18:03
Thanks for comments

Now I've done the bases for drones:

Two additions I bought today:

The last one will be a furious squat auxiliary... well just kidding :p. Got it at half price for my Dwarf army.

17-02-2007, 12:32
Hi all. I had an exam week in school and after that I were lazy again so I haven't updated this log for a while. I'm sorry.

Now here's some converting and assembling I've done.
converted shield drone and 2 marker drones:

I started the devilfish which will be a small diorama about firewarrior squad disembarking from their apc.
Added more detail to the interior:
Tried some placing with blu-tac (there will be at least five firewarriors with converted poses):

17-02-2007, 12:34
more pics:

17-02-2007, 13:20
I hope you don't mind but I'm totally stealing the disembarking troop base for transports. I think these are some of the best Tau I've even seen too.

17-02-2007, 13:56
Wow cool conversion!

The Laughing God
17-02-2007, 13:57
The devilfish is cool.
Looking forward to seeing more progress!

17-02-2007, 16:04
Awesome painting, I love your really crisp highlights.

Keep up the great work.

17-02-2007, 16:54
Nice work man! Wonder were the idea for those selfmade Markerdrones comes from ;)

28-02-2007, 17:17
Thanks for the comments once again.

The progress is sloow as I've been painting some commission works (on canvas though).

The devilfish is now pretty much finished, I have to paint it in many pieces and then put it together.

4 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/IMG_2182.jpg)
5 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/IMG_2186.jpg)

Tomorrow I'm going to undercoat all minis I've assembled so far... and then finally get into painting :D .

28-02-2007, 18:53
That Devilfish looks awesome. Can't wait to see it painted up.

04-03-2007, 20:12
Ok, the stuff is primed now.

blurry pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/9f7ca0ba.jpg)

First I tested the scheme on a lonely drone (still got it right...)

Next was the interior of devilfish...

...and the base.

Thanks for looking.

04-03-2007, 21:32
man those are nice, i've just planned a disembarking tau scene too :)

the inside of the Dfish is excellent, i have just gone normal bleached bone though, i like the grey, it fits with the dark and gritty look to the scheme.

nice work buddy :)

04-03-2007, 21:40
Great stuff! looks a lot like Ap0k's Tau - which I love.

18-03-2007, 22:15
Again I suffered from the lack of inspiration but now I'm back in painting.

The first two members of the devilfish team:

Added the basecoats to the devilfish and started to build up the highlights:

Collase of the two disembarking FW which I glued in the fish already:

18-03-2007, 23:01
very nice. i'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

18-03-2007, 23:14

Also looking forward to seeing this finished...

18-03-2007, 23:14
Excellent diorama idea, and I like the color scheme. Also, you're battlesuits are awesome (especially the flamer and plasma effects).

Warwolt the skaven
18-03-2007, 23:23
holy freaking god (ise use that alot :P) this really inspires me to continue my tau! Dang, I must get some more tanks :D

19-03-2007, 01:46
Nice looking Tau makes me want to do more to mine.

19-03-2007, 02:48
I've always had the desire to paint some tau, simply to do a stealth team that blends in to their surroundings. Even though, I happen to like the XV15s...

19-03-2007, 20:25
Thank you all for your kind words.

Here's a minor update:

Warwolt the skaven
19-03-2007, 20:28
SHWEET ass highlights! Must do those someday ;)

19-03-2007, 21:26
I might have to steal your colourscheme - dark and gritty, just what I like :)

30-03-2007, 14:13
Once again I'm having a test week, but as the worst part is over I had some time to paint.

I know this is progressing slow as hell but it's still better than nothing, though.

04-04-2007, 05:16
looks amazing, im loving how your making shades of grey on such large surfaces interesting.

04-04-2007, 07:05
I love all your models. makes me want to paint. Ciao!

08-04-2007, 07:57

I got bored with the devilfish and painted the XV84 instead:

larger collase (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/ec7d49db.jpg)

This was the first time I tried to use the metallics from VMC range and I think they worked really well. It was also great to finish a model in one sitting after that frustratingly slow progressing devilfish.

...and what is coming up next:

08-04-2007, 18:30
That battlesuit looks sweeet. The model fits the base very well.

Rogue 7
08-04-2007, 19:16
Nomic- over on Tauonline there's a great article on superdetailing the devilfish if you want. http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=7379.0
These all look fantastic, particularly the crisis suits. I wish I had half your skill!

30-04-2007, 13:30
Thanks for the article Rogue 7.

Okay so it's been a while since last update. I've had some time to paint but not enough to update.

Week ago I finished the drones:

pic from above (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/7c70a824.jpg)

...and this weekend I got the devilfish diorama done:

big collase (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/234bd200.jpg)

family pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/ImperialDwarf/Tau%20Empire/7358f0f3.jpg)

I'm really satisfied with the result . Hope you like it.

30-04-2007, 13:46
I'm flat out in awe at the moment....

Awesome work here mate - fantastic colours and well thought out scheme.

Stunning... :)

30-04-2007, 15:03
Awsome looking diorama. Great colour scheme too. The whole army so far is something to be proud of. Keep up the fantastic work. :D

30-04-2007, 15:08
I think my favorite part of the whole army is the use of the orange details. That just compliments an already awesome color scheme.

30-04-2007, 17:29
Wow! what a great army! Was vaguely thinking Tau might be cool for another army (if I ever do another) but now I think I have to - I really didn't think they could be made to look as cool as this.

Great work.

30-04-2007, 17:30
Just awesome! Makes me want to paint my Grenadier army in this color scheme it looks so good.

30-04-2007, 17:51
The Tau are prob one of those armies I'll build bits and pieces of just because I love the models, but prob never play with.

Your dark scheme is exactly what I've seen in my head as of late while I wait for Chaos to get revised. Excellent work, better than I'd be able to do I'm sure.

Really nice job.

01-05-2007, 02:08
very very very very nice......cant wait to see more :)

01-05-2007, 03:42
Wicked diorama man..

01-05-2007, 08:03
Group shot please, looks great!

07-05-2007, 21:02
Nice work. I've been wondering how to highlight my Tau and your style looks good without being overly cartoony.

07-05-2007, 21:15
That diorama looks awesome.

And I love the red line things all over your models. It makes for a very individual army.

04-11-2009, 19:34
This is way back in the forums...
Great work....
