Hi all!
I just finished this fig the other day so i thought i'd share it with you all.
I decided to paint this fig because it's one of the best old school minis still around and it still stands up next to any new ones, also the new dark angels are out soon so it was a good excuse!
Without much scope to convert this fig i decided to concentrate on the banner, paper banners are not used much these days and are not battle friendly so i used a plastic one and copied the design onto it. To do this i found it best to blue tack a paper copy of the banner design next to the plastic banner so that i could hold both at the same time making it much easier to paint the design.

anyway this is the finished fig..

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d103/DarrenLatham/PICT0061.jpg

And this is how i painted it..

The robes-
*basecoat of bronzed flesh
*wash of bestial brown onto the folds
*wash of scorched brown into the deeper folds
*highlight with bronzed flesh and bleached bone mix 50/50
*highlight with bleached bone
*highlight with skull white

The armour-
*basecoat of regal blue
*wash chaos black into the shaded areas
*highlight with regal and ice blue mix 70/30
*same again but 50/50
*same again but30/70
*sharp highlight with ice blue
*spacewolves grey on the sharpest points

The green (shoulder pad & gun pouch)
*basecoat of darkangels green
*wash with chaos black
*highlight by mixing in goblin green to dark angels green for a few highlights
*then mix bleached bone in with goblin green
*then add more bleached bone for a final sharp highlight.

The red areas-
*basecoat of scab red and blood red mix 50/50
*wash with scab red and black mix
*highlight with blood red
*highlight with blazing orange
*highlight with dwarf flesh
*final highlight of elf flesh

The skulls-
*basecoat of scorched brown and codex grey mix 50/50
*wash with chaos black
*highlight with codex
*highlight with fortress grey
*final highlight of bleached bone

The skin-
*basecoat of bestial brown
*wash with scorched brown
*highlight with bestial and dwarf flesh mix 50/50
*highlight with dwarf flesh
*highlight with dwarf flesh & fortress grey & bleached bone mix
*add more bleached bone to the mix for another highlight.
*highlight with bleached bone
*add some thinned shadow grey under the eye.

The sword blade-
*basecoat of shadow grey all over the blade.
*mix in regal blue to the shadow grey for the shaded areas (very thinly done)
*then use regal on its own as a darker shade.
*mix shadow grey and warlock purple and white for the first highlight
*keep adding white for a few more highlights.
*the blade was given a few coats of purple glaze.
*then very thin chaos black was used as the darkest shade
*and to finish white was used as a sharp highlight

This is how the robe detail was done-
1. start by painting an even line around the edge
2. add triangles onto the top of this line
3. the add a dot of the robe colour between each triangle
simple but looks great!

I've also stuck this fig up on coolmini if anyone wants to go and have a vote!

You are a mind reader too...

I am about to start my BT's cloaks... and was wondering how best to do them... not I know how to do them... in less than 24hrs from when I thought about it...

What am I thinking now?!?!

EDIT: Real question... What do you consider a wash? I guess it could ask it... How do you prepare your washes?

Wow, *very* impressive.

And thanks for the tutorial, that's an interesting approach to robes that I'll have to try out sometime

Only thing I can mention which I'm not so keen on is the overly bright highlighting on the edges of the blue armour. It's just a bit too sharp compared with the highlights on the rest of the model. Bit hard to judge without seeing it in real life.. but I've always considered ice blue to be far too bright for highlighting blue.

have to disagree - without the highlight it would make the blue look a lot lighter overall, the lord Spiky tells us :)

Hi, thanks for all the feedback! :)
@ luna wolf-
Ludwig schwarzhelm was painted by me and Kurt helborg was painted by Neil langdown.
@kermit-
When i say "wash" it usually means to thin down paint and dull the basecoat down with a darker colour. I don't use many inks for shading so i just add water to paint, it gives a softer finish.
@spiky-
cheers mate, i had a good look at your mentor legion the other day! great stuff!
@scarlet squig-
thanks for the comment, the reason that i highlighted the blue armour up more and sharper than the rest of the fig is that it's hard armour and the other parts of the fig are cloth. i wanted a contrast between the two so the cloth is softer and the armour sharper.
you should try using ice blue as a highlight, it does look very harsh in the pot but use it as a mix and it works well. the Alaitoc Autarch was highlighted with ice blue (painted by Neil langdown) and the termi librarian was also highlighted with ice blue (painted by me!).

Thanks again! :) Daz

I hate you!

That termi librarian is IMO one of the best paintjobs I have ever seen in my life on a model!

Please can you tell me how you did the tabard and the book he has? My bone colours always come out sucking :(.

Sweet! I never realy liked Ezekiel (who said heretic?) but that truly looks great and comes quite some way to changing my mind . Big thanks on the robes recipee, despite DA being my favourite chapter and for me the only marines worth having, I have always struggled with the robes. I will have to try that. (not a hope in hell of achieving anything like yours but one can only try)

Luna wolf: It's about time we saw some of your fine work on these pages! didn't you get a camera for Christmas? I'm sure you said you did, or am I talking cobblers as usual?

As ever an excellent paint job really brings the miniature to life, great work.

Can I ask. What type of paint brushes you use and what sizes you use to work on something of this size?

thank you! you have just single handedly inspired me to dig out my old DA models, strip them and start again! probably won't be able to get them to quite your standard, but they deserve some love - especially zeke, as he really is a great model even today.

Yay, major threadromancy!

Congrats.

On a serious note of explanation, look at the date of the last post on a thread before you post. In this case it was a good few weeks ago, probably too long to bring it back. Not the worst I've seen though, I think we've had about a year before!

Late reply, I know, just seen the photo....

I am also truly gobsmacked. I also chuckled wryly at how cunning the pattern on the robes is! Very well done all told, very well done.

P.S. I scratch-built my own Ezekiel pretty well but painting-wise it pales in comparison to your masterpiece!
