I just noticed that there is now a ground defences section of the AI page on the forgeworld site-

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/GROUND_DEFENCES.html

(sorry if it has been mentioned but it's news to me)

And i have some questions, is there any in-game difference between the hydra and hydra platforms, and approximately how many hydras would one need in a game (say it was a 200 point game with ground defences)

Thanks!

What I want to know is whether they can move or not.

I'd like to see some more detail on ground forces, so that there is more interaction.

Im really interested in finding this out too; please, someone, shed some light on this!

No there not supposed to move even if they have tracks. The games centred almost purely on aircraft and the speeds that ground craft can move in comparrison isnt worth taking into account.

No difference in the Hydra and Hydra Platform (just a single Hydra entry in the table). No movement rules. Hydras are for shooting at low level aircraft (they have short range, but ideal for defending against low bombing runs or strafing), for high altitude AA use Manticores, for medium altitude use Heavy Flak (basically Earthshakers).

rules wise in AI a hydra is a hydra platform. same with all the ground defences.
none of them can move not even the eldar ones.
i've bought some hydra platforms and some earthshaker platforms (i have 9 manticores for epic too)

They CAN NOT move. Think about the time scale. How long would it take to move an hydra platform in AI turns? It's so insignificant I think not moving is the best approach. Think a thunderbolt moves 30 cm in a turn moving at speeds higher than 1370 mph, what would a Devilfish (the fastest of AA defences) move in the same time? 0.00001 inches?

That's not entirely true.

The eldar wave serpent as per Imperial Armour book 2 has a top speed of 360 kph, which is a good chunk of the speeds imperial aircraft travel at.

The firestorm is listed as travelling at 3100 kph (in IA 2004) although I think it is a typo.

Also, eldar tanks are described as capable of limited flight, and some crew even specialise in attacking from cloud banks!

Eldar ground vehicles at least, should be able to move both along the ground AND up certain altitudes.

It also depends what the speed bands of the aircraft actually represent, whether they are an even division of the craft's maximum speed or not.

You are right but don't you think that keeping things SIMPLE is better?

I think it's better to give them higher altitude range rather than give them movement and altitude values (wich would imply basing them with a AI click-base).

And I think we forget the most important thing, they are called DEFENCES because their main role is to DEFEND some objective, ammo depot or whatever. They are not ment to move but to be placed where they pose the greater threat for incoming enemy aircrafts.

One thing is talking about maximum speed of the aircraft and the other is talking about maximum combat speed. I donīt think they are going to engage other aircraft at 1000+ mph it would be very difficult to lock on a target. So, IMO ground defences should have a little movement (not too much ^_^)

So basically... i can buy the hydra and manticore emplacement models instead of their tracked bretheren, because they look a bit cooler :)

yes. that's what i've done. despite owning 3 hydra tanks for epic, i found myself ordering a pack of hydra platforms from forgeworld.

Has someone found the stat for the Tau Skyray? Either I am blind or they are simply missing.

Have fun,

Rolf.

Check the rules for the ground to air fire. You should find it listed in the table there :)
