This game looks like such a good idea!! :D

First off I'm a Chaos player at heart but due to the lack of Chaos choice I'm really interested in Tau.

How do they play? What can they do that others can't?

Plus are ground defences a good option to take or are they just a waste?

Thanks.

Tau have low thrust, so if you need to accelerate or decelerate quickly you need to use maneouvres instead and think 1 turn ahead. They do have drones though even on the fighters, so if you get close enough to enemy aircraft you can lay out quite a bit of firepower at close range in all directions (only Imp bombers can do this otherwise). They have no Very High capable craft, so there are 2 cards you can't use. Apart from that they seem to play OK - I tried them out yesterday and despite losing with them I'd play them again for sure. The Manta is an awesome hunk of firepower in the rules, but it's expensive - both in points and money.

Ground defences will be useful in scenarios where you have objectives on the ground, either to be bombed or to have troops landed on/near them, as you know where the enemy will have to be and so the defences will get chance to shoot at them. In a dogfight scenario don't even bother.

So Tau don't have the best dog fighting capabilities but what are they like with ground assaults and bombing? Or are they just good all rounders?

I've only used them in dogfights, so I can't comment on the ground attack capabilities. However, they do not have bombs - the only dedicated ground attack weapons are the railguns on the Manta and Tiger Shark AX-10, and Seeker missiles (which can be added to all aircraft except the standard Tiger Shark, which as a "bomber" has no dedicated ground attack weapons of any kind, but does have jump troops as standard). This means that the only way for them to attack ground targets is to "strafe" so you have get right down to altitude 1 and hope the enemy AA fire doesn't get you, and with thrust 1 you will need to make sure you don't overshoot your target by thinking a turn or two ahead ...

Sounds to me like Tau got the short end of the stick. :cries:

Anyhow...just how deadly is AA fire from base defences?

As I said, I have no idea about ground defences yet - only played dogfights so far.

Each airforce has it's own strengths and weaknesses, Tau might have slower maneouvrability but can shoot all round which most aircraft cannot do, and the Manta is just complete overkill (and will take ages to kill with so many hits to take off). Seeker missiles can fire in all directions too, so they're not that bad for blowing up stuff on the ground - although as I said you just have get down low to do it. At least they get transports in multiple craft (and the Tiger Shark is at least a heavy fighter/transporter here, even if it's not a "bomber"), Chaos and Orks have no transport capability at all!

If you want a good all round airforce, stick to the Imperial Navy for now - although those Eldar Vampires are looking incredibly nasty ;)

Well thanks for the info, I think I might just give Tau a go. Imperials are just too...... well I don't like em.

To answer your question on Ground AA, on most occasions you would be unlucky to loose aircraft to all but the heaviest ground defences. Unless the grounds saturated with ground AA you can usually choose an attack route which will let you deliver you payload without sucking up the entirity of the ground AAs firepower (ie staying out of range of the worse of it).

What's not to like? :P

I've got an Imperial squadron, Tau, and now Eldar on the way too :)

You have all those armies? You must have some serious cash flow!

Imperials just seem too boring, I admit they have more choice but they don't seem exotic enough for me.

For AI you don't need to spend much on an airforce - my Tau only cost 34 for 4 Barracudas and 2 Tiger Sharks, the Eldar are costing me 38 for 2 Nightwings, 2 Phoenix, 1 Vampire Raider, and my Imp Navy cost me 58 - 2 Lightnings, 4 Thunderbolts, 2 Valkyries, 1 Marauder Destroyer.

As to cashflow, it's amazing what you can do with a job in IT management/development/security and a couple of credit cards ;) My AI expenditure so far is only a small fraction of my total 40k spend, of which around 1800 so far has been on FW kits alone. And I've been in this hobby nearly 20 years, so I've had plenty of time to spread the payments out :p

Its sounds like AI is a cheap game to start then.

Since you have Tau if you were considering fielding a Manta at all how much other stuff would you have in the army?

I only ask because if I did start I would definatly want a Manta.

If I had a Manta I wouldn't be able to field anything in the standard game sizes! I'd love to get one, but can't justify buying one until my gaming group move to games of 150pts or higher. I guess you don't have the rulebook yet so you don't realise just how expensive points wise they are - to give you an idea, they cost more than 5 Barracudas, abou the same as 5 Tiger Sharks!

If you won't be swayed on the Manta, I'd suggest getting some Barracudas to escort it. Just remember that in small games you won't even be able to take the Manta (which is why I went for Tiger Sharks as they have some troop capacity, can take a bit of damage, and can deal out a bit too if needed).

One major benefit the Tau have is that they have a very low minimum speed. You can often wash off that speed very quickly with something like a Barracuda which has reasonable thrust. Often this can cause enemy aircraft (especially Orks with a high minimum speed and poorer thrust) to overshoot :D

I bought myself an orca, two tiger sharks and four barracudas - I've always wanted an orca, though it was the larger size I lusted after :)

I think a Tau player always has to be prepared to fight a different style of game - I know my Tau are a completely different animal to my Nurgle army in 40k...
