View Full Version : Finishing my Night Lords n stuff

violenceha

I am a lazy, lazy man and apparently i drink, neither of which are qualities useful when it comes to putting together an army so I've started one of these project log thingys.
In an effort to get stuff done I'm now getting up at 5:30am ( the lazy part was a bit of a lie, with shift work and family commitments i don't get to sleep until 2-2:30am) so hopefully i can squeeze in a couple of hours each morning and this log will see a massive amount of progress.

As for the actual Night Lord army, it's in a bit of a state at the moment, bits are missing, and at some point i want to do some CoD style bases. I'm not even sure of army composition at the moment, I know i have a lord, possessed, a chaos marine unit and a unit of raptors. I've also got another marine box and raptor box that damn fool drunken violenceha has put somewhere I'll have to find, I forget what else.
I like to 'square off' my forces when it comes to my armys so they'll also be nemesies for these guys
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/griffons.jpg
, who, coincidentally, are also unfinished. As are these
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/to-go.jpg
and that's only about a quarter of my collection. Next post pics of night lords, i swear!

Ok, first off my lord with daemonic flight
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/pretty.jpg
He really needs a bigger base, even with coins he tips over more than i do after i've had a few, luckily i've got a CoD box around somewhere.
Sorry about the quality of these pics, i was in a hurry and being harrassed by my daughter.
My possessed with daemonic flight
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/possessed.jpg
They still need some more greenstuffing and of course proper basing, but I'm really happy with the way they look.
Marine squad 1
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/night-squad.jpg
I want to replace the few winged helmets in this squad and i've got a bunch of beakies i bought for this purpose somewhere. I keep everything somewhere.
Havocs
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/havocs.jpg
I love the death guard havoc minis and couldn't resist adding them to the night lords force, not sure if they need to be made less nurgly, opinions?
Another raptor squad i bought off ebay needs cleaning up and drunken violenceha has misplaced most off the arms. Geez, what else was in this army.

Amazing conversions here. I am really surprised no one responded already. When are you going to start painting?

I'm looking forward to seeing the Lord painted. Hope he'll turn out god and do the conversion work credit...

Cheers guys, I guess giving a thread a stupid title and having the first pic be something other than a miniature has kinda killed off any interest so I've changed both.
Thanks to a massive heatwave it's been too hot to paint, so I've changed this thread to being about completing all my stuff, meaning i can glue and convert when it's too hot to paint, giving me somehting to do rather that's actually productive.
And to keep this even slightly interesting here's some pics of some more stuff i should have finished by now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/thousands-sons-characters.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/thousand-sons-possessed.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/griffon-characters.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/griffons-1.jpg
The new plan is to have every one of my armies painted by the end of next winter, that'll give me until about september and will include emperors children, night lords, thousand sons, death guard, world eaters, iron warriors, crimson fists, howling griffons, dark angels, blood angels, eldar, tau, tyranids and orks. I think i'll leave all the fantasy stuff for next year.
By the way, what's a polite screen size for posting images? These all look huge even though i resized them before posting.

The last few are a perfect size for me. (they don't need a horizontal scroll-bar)

Onto what's shown: Like it all. Paint is good, conversions are good. On the death guard havocs I would suggest getting rid of the nurgle signs (such as the giant tri-pussball on the melta-gun).

But, looking forward to more!

Gotta subscribe to this early. It's all done at a great standard - the robes on your sorcerers are made of win.

Well time for some excuses then, eh?
Where is all my green stuff? I had like 9 packs and have spent the last week going through everything i own, and found nothing. Today i gave up and went to my local to buy some more only to find for some reason they are closed. Crap. So I've made these guys but will have to wait until i get more grren stuff to finish them
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/standard.jpg
I've also finished glueing the chaos marine squads, havocs, possessed and raptors together so as soon as it stops storming I'll be outside spraying them black and actual painting can begin. Seriously if anything else goes wrong and my next post isn't tomorrow with a painted pic, I'll request my own banning.

At the moment I'm forcing myself to paint the chaos marines first, it's been at least 5 months since i last painted and I'll need to warm up before i get to the cool stuff.

Yeah, it's been in my bitz box(s) for ages, I finally got to use it!

Who, me? :D I'm afraid i got 'All the armies i couldn't afford when i was a kid' syndrome. This is actually my 3rd Night Lords army, my first was a rogure trader force, back when they were black. My friend played dark angels, who were also black. So we both bought a bunch of beakies and just sprayed the lot black, then painted red eyes. Games got quite confusing.
Didn't get as much painted as i'd hoped this morning, been pouring boiled water into paint pots, more were dry than i had thought, joys of an australian summer, i guess, so here's a very small update, badly photographed ( I'm off to investigate this). Also destroyed a space marine to put on the lords base.

NICE conversions throughout, especially on the sorcerers and such. Also, w00t for flamer-marine conversions, I have a few of those myself :D

The quartered marines look very nice as well, but the insane chaos conversions steal the show for me

Hey there, it's all really shaping up. I like the look of your Night Lords, but I was wondering if you're going to do any bikes. I bought 7 of them so far, and I wrote a particularly nasty list for the Night Lords - if they're not bike-mounted, then they're infiltrating. It would be awesome to see some lightning bolts all over bikes, as inspiration. :)

I like the hands attached to their helmets, it really gives that "terror" effect that characterizes the Night Lords.

I had originally planned to add a biker squad as I don't have a single bike in any of my chaos forces, though at the moment I'm torn between bikes, terminators, chosen in power armour or converting up a bunch of furies. Or all four!
Anyway, not much more done, it's been a buggar of a week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/violenceha/nighty1.jpg
Getting there slowly, only 2 more marines to get to this point then i can go back and paint all the skulls and bits and pieces. Also, I really need to work on my lightning!
Need some opinions on the armour trim, I was going to paint it gold (just like on the front of the box!) but now, i really like it black, they look so dark and it reminds me of my second Night Lord army, so I'm thinking of just neatening it up and highlighting it to keep the dark and nasty feel. What do you guys reckon, black or gold?

Well well well, it seems you actually do play this game, innit?

Anyways, I'd suggest using some kind of contrasting color on the trims of the shoulder pads, because otherwise they just look like some black space marine without any distinguishing features.

Your conversion work is top-notch btw.

Very nice, I really like the diffrent way to painted them. They really do seem dark! I wanted to add some highlights on my own NL,but at the same time didnt want to to be too bright. So now I have to ask you a few questions...

1:How did you paint the basic armour? Is it black with regal and lighting blue highlights? I wont change up my whole army but I might have to do my lord up like that so he stands out. BTW LOVE your lord, really do.

2:How did you do the reds on the wings and arrows? I need a step by step I really like the way they turned out...not bright but the stand out enough.

3:Lightingbolts....how?!? I have tried many times and they always look bad. Please teach me.

violenceha
02-03-2007, 07:20
The armour is undercoated black then painted with a mix of 1 part water, 2 parts chaos black, 1 part regal blue. Then highlight with 1 part water, 1 part chaos black, 1 part regal blue. Then highlight with 1 part water, 1 part regal blue on the raised edges. Finally 1 part water, 1 part regal blue, 1 part ice blue for the final highlight.
For the wings and arrows a coat of scab red (maybe 2 depending on how even it looks), highlight with 1 part water, 1 part scab red, 1 part blood red, then a final highlight of 1 part water, 1 part blood red.
I suck at lightning bolts and plan on practising them this weekend. To paint them I'd say pretty much the same as the mix for the armour starting with 1 part water, 1 part chaos black, 1 part regal blue. Then 1 part water, 1 part regal blue, 1 part ice blue. Then 1 part water, 1 part regal blue, 2 parts ice blue, then 1 part water, 1 part ice blue. then 1 part water, 1 part skull white. Start with a 00 sized brush then switch to a 000 when you get to the lighter highlights so the darker colours show at the edges.
As for actual lighning bolts do a google search and get a few pictures of lightning and copy the shape of them, that way you won't end up with bits all over the place like my first attempts and practise on spare shoulder pads or even paper until you're happy with the results.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask me to explain further if it doesn't make sense, I'm terrible at explaining stuff:D

I have a special helper monkey who plays for me while i lay passed out under the table!:D If only he could sneak through customs unnoticed.
Weird, my phone just vibrated in my pocket, I went to get it out and it turns out it's in my other pocket.

Bloody distractions, all my Dark Angels stuff has turned up, plus the bases i ordered for my Iron Warriors, I was hoping to have the Night Lords finished before then, now i keep looking over and thinking of all the cool stuff i can make instead of painting.

Wow, I'm ashamed I missed this.

Those Night Lords are terrific looking, as are the rest of your models. Simply wow, and all this time I thought Night Lords were dorky looking, you've turned them into something fierce and intimidating! Really nice job bringing out that creature of the night, vampire/bat, imagery in them.

Cheers guys! I'm shocked people are actually clickiing on this thread despite the name.

Ya, tell me about it. I didn't want to make a new thread just to revitalize my log from 2 years ago so I just revived mine and I hate the title...should really try talking to a mod about it sometime...que sera, sera.

Something about the way you describe your battles with 'drunk violenceha' makes me imagine Frank Gallagher (http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/S/shameless/gallery_12_gallery.html) painting an army :D

Apart from that, these conversions are top notch. Cult legions have a natural theme but undivided can be more difficult. These guys look truly evil.

I particularly like the fantasy sorcerer (a model I've never been much impressed by before) converted into a CSM sorceror by simply glueing extra arms and other marine parts over the top. It looks great. The lord is also great, even if he is only a sinister sillhouette in the second pic...

I need a break from painting blue! Well, to be honest, I can't get the lid off my Regal Blue, so I've been pissfarting about with my Iron Warriors, rebasing, adding bits and ,eventually, repainting. Here's a pic for no better reason than I really like these guys and can't wait to repaint them!

When I first converted him he had a hood which I immediately got rid of as his face looked exactly like Skeletor from Masters of the Universe, now I think of it every tme I look at him and I'm not happy. I have no idea who or what Skeletor is but I like the model - a LOT. I think that skull-faced, laughing monstrosity really fits the Night Lords: sadistic, murdering terrors.

I can picture him coming out of nowhere, charging some Guardsmen and killing them in a bloody orgy of violence, cackling all the way...*shivers*
