View Full Version : 501st Grand legion (Abaddons Fist)

03-02-2007, 01:13
Well it all started back in 1997 i believe, when i bought my first 40k mini. Abaddon the Despoiler. From there it was a downward spiral into the glorious maelstrom known as chaos. After many army lists and a new version of the rules I moved on. 40k always had a special place in my heart. After a few years im back and loving it again like i first did all those years ago. You can see my current progress through my project log in my sig with tyranids but i cannot resist the calling of Chaos.

And so it has begun. After their defeat at the hands of the loyalist marines, The 501st is returning from the warp to exact their revenge.

Stay tuned to this channel to see any and all updates!
pictures coming soon!

(anyone catch the reference?)

Easy to spot for fans of that saga.

03-02-2007, 10:39
I found it only fitting that my first mini ever was the warmaster, and now again the first mini for my chaos army is him again.

heres a very work in progress shot of ole ab (his hair really isnt shiny like that)

and a solo shot of his demon sword. I figured the sword was the bound essence of a demon, so why not make the sword look sort of "alive"

C&C welcome!

The Wandering Ancient
03-02-2007, 10:45
Ah, knew I recognised that. That's the 501st legion, Vader's fist, right?

I like the face on Abbadon, looks good. The sword looks nice too, the faces make it come alive. (Guess that was the idea :) )

You got any ideas for conversions etc. to make the legion stand out? This could be a nice project, keep the work up.

03-02-2007, 10:52
ive got quite a few ideas actually, its just implementing them thats the tough part. i may need to start learning some greenstuff skills.
Im going to try to update this log as often as possible however im also painting up a 'nid army (see my sig) so ill be going back and forth.

ya im an uber star wars nerd so i thought the name would fit quite nicely.

03-02-2007, 11:15
Possessed Jedi ftw:D !

Looking good so far, the face in particular is very well done. 's good to see you can paint humanoids (however mutated they may be) to the same high standard as your 'Nids.

03-02-2007, 16:05
hey hiveminion, glad you found your way over here too! I really need to take some better pictures. The face work is some of my personal best but seems to be average in the pictures on here. Maybe some daytime shots when he is done will look better!

thanks for the comments! More coming soon

05-02-2007, 06:46
The sword and the face look great bro.....don't let this distract you from your nids. ;)

05-02-2007, 17:09
see thats the hard part. With so many nids to paint, having something else to do is a great relief. Ive started batch painting my nids. Right now im working on 5 hormagaunts, then when they are done ill do some more work on abaddon and then go back and do some more nids. Ive got a lictor to finish too so ill throw him in there as well. If hardcastle would ever get off their duff and restock bugs instead of everything else then i could pick up what i need.

05-02-2007, 21:48
That makes sense. I do the same thing with my guard. I paint a squad, then a tank, then another squad, then a tank. So far it's working, but who knows if it will hold up. :)

06-02-2007, 07:16
Heres some progress on the warmaster. Ive tried some things with the metals on him mainly washing the gold/brass with flesh wash to give it a worn rusty look. Also did a little something with his base. Im all for making HQ units have special bases but i dont have alot to work with right now.

06-02-2007, 08:21
It looks god so far. The 501st campaign in Battlefront II is one thing I really likes; great storyline - something you don't see to often nowadays outside Blizzard's games - which of course makes this extra interesting, although the title would be more applicable to an Imperial Guard regiment as 'the Emperor's Fist".

06-02-2007, 18:47
That is a very good looking pose. A bit hunched over, combi-bolter blazing, Drachn'yen (whatever its name is...) at the ready...cool. The gold IMO doesn't look too rusty, BUT WAIT THAT'S GOOD, because it definitely looks old, in fact ancient, but still clean (I'm sure Abbadon makes sure that the mutated laundry-servitors keep his Terminator Armour in good condition).

I'm sure he''l look great when finished! Keep up the good work!

06-02-2007, 20:53
Ab's sword looks amazing. Keep it up I can't wait to see the finished product. I always have a hard time making the gold fit in with the rest of my paint job.

09-02-2007, 06:14
::UPDATE:: Well i got off work a little early and immediatly set upon abaddon. His base isnt finished and I may go back in and do some small highlights but for the most part hes done. Let me know what you think!

now that hes finished i can focus on some more of my nids, then once that batch is done my next chaos project will be this guy. He'll pose as the lord for my 1000-1850 pt games and my 1st Lt for larger battles. Any ideas of stuff i can add to his base?

09-02-2007, 11:56
Abbadon looks great! The symbol on the tabard is very well executed. Perhaps the green quill(?) could use an extra highlight for some more contrast, but that's just an idea.
Aha, the Terminator Lord! For his base you could add a head on a stake, or just another corpse. As long as it's not to much, anything can go with it.
I'll be watching this space. I'm especially interested in how you will be doing the gun.

09-02-2007, 17:28
looking at it now i see i only base coated the the little green tuft of hair(?) im gonna go back in and fix that in a bit. Next week im going to make a bits order from some places so i will look for some stuff to base the term lord with.

09-02-2007, 19:48
Great job on Abaddon. Considering he spent the last two years in retirement as you were away from your true calling I am kind of intimidated by him. I mean what do we have to do to keep that guy down. Love the highlighting on the edges of the claws. Only thing I could recommend is to use more copper. Of course I am a sucker for those metallics.

10-02-2007, 10:57
looking at it now i see i only base coated the the little green tuft of hair(?)

That's it. Did I say quill? I can't believe I said quill...that's a wanna-be-a-ballpoint feather isn't it? It's indeed a piece of hair...no a scalp...no it's a citadel drybrush...no it's a rabbit foot fo good fortune...whatever it is.

15-02-2007, 09:54
well its been a while but im still around. I picked up some marines but i have to wait for my bits order to come in to finish them all. I did however churn out a test marine. With the exception that some areas arent as black as they need to be (base coat error) and the bolter isnt finished hes complete. The head is one of the originals that came on the sprue i just removed his top not (im not a big fan) With the bits i will have some different heads for swapping and adding accessories. Im hoping that minor changes like weapon and head swaps and some other small additions will make them stand out a bit from the standard black legion cookie cutter marines.

I decided against pupils as I felt this made them look more demonic and not too human anymore

a close up of my first attempt at a free hand squad insignia. the first squad will have these Gothic "1"s and the second squad will have two's and so on and so forth

what do you think i should do with the bolter? mainly the top area that sticks up a little and the parts on the front of the gun. Should i from here on out dry brush boltgun metal over the whole thing and then put the red casing on and details?

15-02-2007, 10:30
very nice work, great crisp paintwork. really like the abbadon

15-02-2007, 15:08
Nice Marine, the freehand symbol looks very good!

I always drybrush all metal parts first, and then start painting the other colours, details etc. Alternatively you could paint the metal areas and then wash them with black or brown ink.

Just one thing, to emphasize the pupilless, demonic eyes, perhaps an other colour than white would be better. Red especially looks menacing.

Nice to see some more work done, keep it up!

15-02-2007, 20:38
Damn looks tough will have to work on my space wolves skills if I have to take those guys on. Once again great work on the symbol. I think If i cut down on the caffeine intake in the morning I might have a steadier hand but it is so good.

15-02-2007, 21:21
Nothing big right now, i needed a break from working on my lictor and decided to try and make the insignia as even as i could on some other shoulder pads. They came out close enough i think and will look pretty good on the table top. Anyway heres what i was able to accomplish.

and next to the original.

and the obligatory workspace shot

well time to get ready for work!

19-02-2007, 21:13
Well ive had little time to do much this past weekend but just thought i would throw this up. Heres the berserker im working on. I chopped his hand of and repositioned it a bit. Tried some different colors with the bolt pistol and i think im going to not wash the gold trim. It sets the minis apart from the rest of the army and provides a great contrast with the red.

heres him next to the CSM to show the difference in the metal trim. CSM is washed, Berserker isnt

19-02-2007, 21:29
Decision seconded

Somehow, Khorne always seemed to me as the most clean cult, ironically (well, it would've been more ironic if it were Nurgle...). Perhaps it's the bright red, that just *begs* for some shiny gold. Had you painted him in darker red colours (which somehow don't appeal to me so much), perhaps a wash would've fit, but for this scheme it doesn't.

Are you going to keep the backpack metal? Personaly, I think it would look better if it's painted red and gold, too.

Good to see some stuff again! Can we expect some Nids in the not so distant future, too? (That's what you get with good project logs: must-have-more syndrome;) )

20-02-2007, 05:03
Hey HM! I am on the fence about the back pack. It really was a last minute addition to the mini and I will probably go back in and paint it.

As for the nids, well lets just say that my lictor is almost done aside from basing. Im hoping to have him finished tonight or tomorrow. Then Im going to be working on a small brood of termagants. soo many bugs so little time.

20-02-2007, 09:43
Wow! Those guys look great! I had a look at the thread after the first couple of posts and decided I'd wait until there wer a few more pics before commenting. It was definitely worth the wait. The black armour looks really solid. None of that pastelly grey you often see.

Keep up the good work! :)

20-02-2007, 12:23
Don't you just hate painters who make your minatures look like a pre-school attemt, just love them!

22-02-2007, 22:38
ive come to the conclusion that tyranids are hard work. So after working on my lictor for a while i did some more stuff to my terminator lord. I tried some things with the bone horns that parallel his head. and i had my first try at a transfer. I was going to try to hand paint it but was proving to be to much of a challenge.

ok fixed

23-02-2007, 20:23
He looks really good! The horns, the cloak and the gold look very nice, and you even managed to apply a transfer without it looking all transparent and shrively (mine always ruin the already poor paintjob...). The chains look cool, too, did you wash them?

Ever hungry for more...

24-02-2007, 00:23
ya im pretty happy with the transfer. it is kind of glossy but im sure once hes sealed that will go away. For the chains yes i did wash them with some chestnut ink (man i love that stuff) you can see i got some of it on one of the skulls that hang from his belt. Im going to go back in and pick out some more detail from the chains, finish the skulls, highlight the gold stuff and finish his arms. Im hoping i can get him and my lictor done tonight.

24-02-2007, 07:01
HAHAH so i have gotten away with painting at work.. what a milestone, I now have triple the time i usually do to finish minis.

I finished the terminator lord and my lictor (minus basing unfortunatley) so updates will follow shortly!!

24-02-2007, 09:38
as promised heres the term lord!

C&C away!

24-02-2007, 17:40
Looks amazing!

Well most of the good things I've already mentioned, so insert that <here>, and here's the criticism: personaly, I wouldn't do the wires in such bright colours, they look a bit cartoony compared to the dark chaos lord.

Additional pat on the back: very nice job on the Kai Gun's containment field, I'm curious is it's light blue or purple, it differs in the pictures. I'm guessing the former, though.

Good to hear you've got more time to paint, but don't risk your job just for your fans;) .

24-02-2007, 18:36
When i started the wires i was just going to use a dark red and blue but i figure hes got blue wires on his left arm and his cloak is red so i decided to use some other colors. After i started on them however I was concerned about them looking cartoony and unfit for the model, but they ended up looking great. In the pictures I see what you mean however up close they are much more subtle and it adds some color w/o being over the top

The guns containment field thing is just ultramarins blue with the ridges picked out in white w/drybrushing

28-02-2007, 18:19

Painting at work has proved to be a most lucrative opportunity. I can focus on each individual with the attention it deserves and my productivity(minis of course) still soars. For example I can do 2.5 gaunts a day as opposed to 4 or so in a week. But this is a chaos thread so enough about bugs ON TO THE MINIS!!

I finally recieved my bits order so now i can finish the first squad and start onto the second. Warhammer Fantasy Chaos has some really sweet bits!

Fist is my Heavy bolter marine. Pretty standard except for a head swap.

Next is my standard bearer. Hes a cloaked dark angel marine with the iconography filed/chopped off. Game wise the standard will just be a close combat weapon but I believe theres some standards chaos can carry, I dont have the codex right now so ill have to look.
again heres the insignia for the first denoting 1st Squad

Next post due to pic limit

28-02-2007, 18:40
Real cool conversion on the standard bearer, i never thought that dark angels bodies would fit in so well on chaos marines to

28-02-2007, 18:48
And heres some WIP shots of my aspiring champion for 1st squad. Nothing major just a head swap that required some filing and he was given a plasma pistol.

A side shot of the sword. For fluff the weapon is a warp infused sword that acts as a power weapon.

I have a terrible time making a story up but his story goes something along the lines of,
KA'resh rose through the ranks of a small war band on a backwater world cut off from the fleet during an attack on an eldar fortification. Thought left for dead the marines had to survive on their own after their suits recycling abilitites werent able to assist them any longer. Due to infighting the group was forced into hunting and gathering to stay alive as they reverted to a sort of tribal gang. The close proximity of the planet to the warp meant the mutating effects of chaos were abundant. He grew larger than his brethren eventually unable to don the power armor any more. Fashioning some makeshift armor from various pieces of his old suit allowed him to battle the denizens of the planet with the protection he needed. The armor eventually fusing itself to his skin.
A recon squad from the Black legion landed in the area and fighting erupted. His warband was all but annihilated and he was knocked unconscious. When he awoke he was inside a ships quarters, just as he remembered all those years ago. He picked up what he recollected as being a data file and through reading it he ascertained he was chosen to lead a squad of marines under the command of Abaddon the Despoiler. Chosen to live due to his skills in battle and pure unfettered anger.

28-02-2007, 18:59
Yay! Update! And what an update it is, jummy!

First off, the heavy bolter Marine looks really cool, Fantasy Chaos has some nice bits indeed! The colour of the helmet does not entirely fit in with the rest of the model, but hey, it's Chaos! The hole of the heavy bolter barrel looks a bit grey but from my experience that often happens with pics. I'm experimenting with Black Ink for the barrel's holes and it works quite nicely, maybe you'd like to try it?

The standard bearer has a really nice feel to it, something mysterious, I like it.

The aspiring champion is very original, and looks suitably intimidating. The paint job on the sword and the cloak are amazing, but I expect it's WIP, because the head is plain black?

The background sounds very good, nice to see you give them a story. Good to hear you have more time to paint! Wish I could say the same...:(

28-02-2007, 19:07
Thanks for pointing out that my AC is WIP. ::updated original thread::

Ill finish the AC tonight as well as work on some more guants. If im feeling feisty i may do some work oh Kharn as well. Thanks for the input, i was hoping they turned out halfway decent and i wasnt crazy

28-02-2007, 19:19
Great work so far Aziron. I really like the blank staring eyes, and the conversions on the standard bearer and aspiring champion are brilliant.

I'll be watching :D

07-03-2007, 20:05
ok found the digital camera and its time for an update.

got some more marines done yesterday. Nothing extravagant or out of the ordinary but i do find the head and weapon swaps add some much needed variety and character to the models them selves and it feels like they are individual models instead of a bunch of rank and file monotonous pieces to a puzzle

First is the finished Aspiring Champion KA'resh of 1st Squad

07-03-2007, 20:08
Plasma Gun Marine http://shutter11.pictures.aol.com/data/pictures/06/004/77/EB/88/84/etgYwb6BwkP1dmRpma6YtbtNpnKhYx6t0112.jpg

A WIP marine doing his "im gonna knock you into next week" impressionhttp://shutter13.pictures.aol.com/data/pictures/05/003/39/6F/14/36/BmyRBiHL0pNXfjYOfU0wiT8wN0xK51-S0184.jpg

another WIP marine, it wouldnt be chaos without a little mutation right?

07-03-2007, 20:11
Another WIP marine... nothing special here so we will call him "Joe"

and finally a group shot of the unfinished 1st Squad.

Im going to do the backpacks and basing when the whole squad is finished so dont worry about them not having neither.

C&C encouraged and thanks again

07-03-2007, 20:19
Good work on the chaos marines, even though they're "just headswaps" they really set the models apart from the regular black legionnaires you see left, right and centre. Also I think you'll recognize the feeling that when you've converted a model even just a little bit, I find it's so much more enjoyable to paint.

On the subject of painting, the paintjob is excellent as always, the black armour looks so good...by the way, I recognize the AC's boot colour as being similar to your Nids' exoskeleton. Coincidence?:)

Keep it comin'!

08-03-2007, 08:44
This is really coming together.

08-03-2007, 09:04
Lovin it keep it up. Only one tini tiny little thing that buggin me. Is KA'resh going to have a pack back?

08-03-2007, 17:35
As it sits right now now he wont. Fluff wise he grew out of his power armor. If i can make it work then I will put one on him. Im thinking about just cheating and saying that everything that the back pack provided him is rearranged under his cape.

08-03-2007, 18:41
Good looking stuff; the headswaps work.

However, I see some mouldlines on the mace armed marine, mainly on the weapon arm. Sorry to nitpick but these are noticable; I don;t usually pick up on mouldlines (since about half of my Eldar are covered in them :))

12-03-2007, 09:20
small update

Heres my Berserker Champ.

just 6 more and the squad is done.

then my first obliterator

12-03-2007, 10:01
loving the champ, perfection!

12-03-2007, 15:46
Wippy, I suppose?;) The paint job (especially on the armour) is looking great, though. Just some more cleaning up to do and he's ready for some good honest bloodletting!

20-03-2007, 08:35
small update: I bit'ed together the aspiring champ for second squad.

and sad to report the first and only two games ive played with this force they were utterly annihilated at the hands of some very crafty space wolves. Ahh well just means i need bigger guns...

20-03-2007, 09:00
nice pc wall paper!

oh yeah and mice models too.

20-03-2007, 17:01
I was very tempted to shout "Echo!" a while back but I restrained myself;)

Good to see some progress being made. Heh, the Great Guns of Azirone never tire...go blast them doggies to canine shreds!

23-03-2007, 09:25
Champs done for squad 2. Again nothing special just a head swap and the plasma pistol from the berserker sprue. The backpack icon is a banner topper from the chaos fantasy sprue.

Again the freehand insignia designating squad num.

Basing will be finished when i get ahold of the materials which should be next weekend.

disect away!

23-03-2007, 09:56
Honk if you love double posts!

23-03-2007, 10:32
Your painting is improving by the model!
