View Full Version : My Eldar Army

DV8

My Eldar are a Saim-Hann themed army. Lots of reds and whites. I want the accent color to be gold, and the army will follow a Dragon theme. So scales....lots...and lots....of scales.

The initial volley will be:

Farseer
6 Dark Reapers
5 Harlequins
6 Swooping Hawks
6 Jetbikes

That will give me my initial 1000 point list, and I'll expand with:

6 Fire Dragons
10 Dire Avengers
2 Vypers
3 Warwalkers
Falcon
Fire Prism

I've started with my Farseer, and after 2 and a half hours of work (the scales all have 4 highlights minimum...some are worked up more than others):

I'll do my best to paint a little every day, and post updates as they come along.

Thats awesome, a great start and a very cool theme for the whole army.

The red scales look good too.

Cheers

I agree, the scale effect is absolutely brilliant, I can't wait to see the finished model. Please explain exactly how you achieved it.

That effect on the helmet is stunning, did you base it on a cracked egg? Are you going to continue it onto the the rest of the helmet?

Any chance you can give a quick brief on how you achieved it?

Just to reiterate everyone; that helmet is superb! As are the scales on the red. Can;t wait to see this finished!

DV8,

I really like your style of painting. I will keep a close eye on this thread to hopefully get lots of ideas for things I am working on.

I just hope you don't burn out... and quit... like I did after one model for my Eldar army... Don't do that!

Can't wait for more,

kermit

Just an update. Finished up the scales on the helmet, and I've started his robes. I'm taking a bit of a break right now to figure out how to layer his robes in terms of which colors to choose.

You can start to tell the whole look that I'm going for...a fairly limited color scheme with the dragon scales that will carry across the whole army to unify them.

The cracked helmet is actually supposed to be dragon scales, and it's really easy to do. Basically, figure out the color you want the scales (for example, grey/white). Paint your initial base (I blended from black to a 50/50 fortress grey/skull white), and then take a color slightly brighter than the lightest color in your blend, and very carefully paint in the individual scales.

Once that's done, go back with your highlights (by adding more and more white, for example) and just highlight where the light would catch, based on your light source (mine's on top, more or less).

Stop once you're satisfied with the result, or you can't highlight any further (like when you're highlighting with pure white..:P)

Your work is even better than I expected. How long have you been painting DV8?

Please don't ponder too long, I want to see this mini finished. As for the cloak, if I were you I would paint it dark green. I have always liked a red/green contrast, its very rich, and suitably eldar.

FearFrost

I like the way it is going, except the gold...metallic colors never seem to fit eldar :\

How do you do your red, if you dont mind me asking?

9 and a half years...10 in September. I started way back in grade 7, and I'm in 3rd year right now. As for the little break, it was supposed to be a short break, kinda eat dinner, then paint s'more, kinda thing, but I must have blown a fuse or something because my lamp just shut off and I can't paint without proper lighting. So that's a bummer. Hopefully I'll be able to get more done when I get back from class.

As for Green, I'm reserving that for the eyes and gems. The robe's gonna be white...I want something darker and more uniform, so the green cloak right beside the red cloak might be a bit to....."bright", if that makes any sense. Basically, I want to use as few colors as possible on the major areas.

I rather like how the gold fits in with the red. I'm not sure if it's the pictures or what, but it looks a lot better in real life than in the photos. I'll try and take better photos next time around.

For the red:
Black undercoat
Basecoat Scorched Brown
Highlight by progressively adding Blood Red to Scorched Brown (I use the glazing technique here so lots of thin, watered down layers)
Once you hit pure Blood Red, wash the recesses with a 50/50 mix of Scorched Brown and Liche Purple (again, glazing technique).
Once that's done, I do a final glaze/highlight of 75/25 Blood Red/Blazing Orange.

Depending on what you're highlighting, you may want to take it further with the Orange (like armor or scales).

The white/grey looks pretty good, nice blends. I use a glazing technique as well (sometimes), but I hadnt tried mixing red with scorched brown like that. Impressive work.

Yes,...it'll be the theme I use to unify my force as a whole, even when their armor colors don't exactly match (say for aspect warriors). I'm going to have fun painting scales on my tanks (granted they will be slightly larger).

Task for tomorrow is the gun and hopefully the staff.

DV8, that is superb. The red in particular is beautiful! How far is it from complete?

I also saw in the first post that you;d be getting Harlequins. These going to be the new models or the old ones? Either way I look forward to seeing them eventually :D

Insane project, but its gonna look insanely good when you get the things together, how slowly it might be doesnt matter really :)

On the cloak, how about making it dark brown with simple white symbols or just some simple pattern? would make him look a little more "down to earth fighter"

WOW!! thats simply amazing i love what you have done with the scales on the armour. The gold works realy well against the reds as well, you can tell you have put alot of thought into the mini and the effort shows. I hope the rest of the prodject continues as you have started it.

The red is pretty much done. I might go back and touch it up a bit, but it's more or less complete.

I got my hands on 8 of the old Harlequins for fairly cheap, but chances are by the time I get to them, the new ones will be out, so I'd say the new ones.

The back of the cloak is going to be the same red as the front robe, "fading" to the scale pattern on the bottom.

Also, just a note, I reconfigured the initial list, so instead of 5 Harlequins and 6 Swooping Hawks, it'll be 5 Harlequins and a Falcon.

Wow this thread got buried fast.

Apologies for the slow updates, but I've got a lot of school projects on my plate, which doesn't leave much time for painting.

Progress since last time:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/mybrain/WIPs/DSC05000.jpg

I'd like to finish the staff and gems by weeks end (or the weekend), ideally, but I don't know if I'll have time. Who knows such things...only the Oracle.

Brilliant work there DV8, truly excellent.

One minor (very minor) niggle is that I don't think the puch type things on the cloak work brillaintly as that bright red.

Superb though, that's really all I can say, especially that scal pattern.

The scales look great.

Only criticism is that the scales on the gun detract from the model. I just don't think it fits with the model too well, as it becomes the focal point when I look at it, which should really be the helmet. I know you won't go back and change it, but maybe for future models keep the scales to the helmets and robes.

Good job nonetheless
