I've been super interested in the miniatures game Infinity, made by a company called Corvus Belli. To quickly summarize it, it's like a sci-fi version of Confrontation, in terms of miniatures and rules. Skirmish gunfight battles like Necromunda!

Anyways, I fell in love with the sculpts and rules, so I decided to take a break from GW stuff for a while and paint up a few Infinity forces. My first will be Nomads, a high tech army of vagabonds and social misfits who refuse the rule of any nation.

The obligatory workspace pic:
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f281/BBivona/Miniature%20Painting/Infinity/Nomads/Workspace.jpg
Blister packs:
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f281/BBivona/Miniature%20Painting/Infinity/Nomads/NomadStart3.jpg
Size comparisons:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f281/BBivona/Miniature%20Painting/Infinity/Nomads/NomadStart.jpg

The models are really nicely proportioned, less squat than most of GW's stuff. They are cast really nice, too...some flash, but very little mold line action.

Assembly/Paint coming soon!

Looks like an interesting game, and the minis look great.

I may have to look it up. Got a URL?

Their official page, which isnt very easy to navigate:

Their english forum:

I also use fantization.com as sort of an online catalog of the minis that are available :)

Hey another fear frost log, coolness.
I have been looking at the Infinity line since it came out here in Aust a few months ago and looking for anything that i could use in my 40k armies but nothing has jumped out yet, although you are very right the sculpts are rather good and nearly no mould lines and such. will keep and eye (or two) on this from time to time.

I've had a quick squiz at the site a few times, the mini's are a bit to anime for my own personal liking. But it should be interesting to actually see someone work on them and see the resluts.

Yes! Been looking forward to seeing what you do with Infinity, because it's sure to be awesome :D

Glad you're doing Nomads, as I'm getting more and more interested and was having a hard time picking between Nomads or Haqqislam. So now I'll get to see Nomad stuff in the metal, and painted amazingly to boot!

You think you'll be able to get a game or two in to test the rules out too? Pretty much zero support for the game around my parts, dunno if that's the same for you.

I definately will play it...I got some pan oceania models as well for a friend, so we will play some battles :)

Picking between the factions was really hard...I like all of em a lot. I will probably paint up a Yu Jing or Haqqislam force one day, too.

I will hopefully post some more in progress pics of stuff tonight :D

Man, you got going on this project fast. I’ll be watching with great interest because I’m getting some too. Are you going to paint up the Pan-Oc guys too, or are you let your buddy do that? :D

My Mom just sent me a gift certificate for the War Store for my birthday, so I’m picking up the Ariadna and Nomad starter packs. I let my wife pick the other army, so she picked the Nomads. She really likes the Zonds because they look like Tachicomas. Oh yeah, I gotta get some Highlanders!!! I’m really excited, because I’ll get to build some intact buildings.

I spent the last two days reading up on the rules. I haven’t read up in about 9 months or so, I really like some of the stuff they added, especially the combined order.

Looking forward to more, your great painting skills will really shine on these guys.

I'm actually seriously interested by this game! Can you please give me a very very quick rundown on how it plays? The mini's are so amazing I'd consider buying them just to paint.. except the fact that one of the starter kits would cost me $46 Canadian + Shipping from Spain (I'm guessing) unless I can find a closer retailer.

FearFrost
09-02-2007, 18:19
The warstore.com sells em, they ship to canada, I believe.

Its basically a skirmish style game, with a fluid turn system...its I go, you go like 40k, but models can react to other models movements and shooting. Very lethal, more like modern combat...very little actual hand to hand fighting, for example.

Brilliant stuff. I really like how Infinity looks, and the background sounds really awesome, but it really seems far too out of reach for my budget, even compared to GW.

Still, I am definately looking forward to more of your work on these.

FearFrost
09-02-2007, 21:24
One of the attractions for me to the game (and confrontation, for that matter) was that you only need about 5-15 models to play a game :)

Hopefully I will have some more progress on these soon, but I have a busy weekend ahead of me :)

Looking great Frost. Consider me a groupie. Have you given any thought about indicating the 180 degree front arc?

...but it really seems far too out of reach for my budget, even compared to GW.

Frost beat me. :D Actually, because itís a skirmish game you only need around 10 or so guys for an average game, so unless you go overboard, itís actually cheaper than fielding a 40K army. Thatís a big bonus for me, because two 40K armies and two WHFB armies later, I only have one painted.

I'm actually seriously interested by this game! Can you please give me a very very quick rundown on how it plays? Iím getting mine from The War Store (U.S., Google it!), and he ships internationally. Youíll have to get a quote though for the exchange rate.

For some more insight on the mechanics, there is a current Warseer thread on the subject.

I have found that if you just want to check out the minis, the Corvus Belli store is the better way to do that than the game site.

Yeah, the nomad illustrations all have red/brown. My scheme is similar, but different enough to call my own :)

Lithian:

Im not sure yet about the arcs...I was thinking of just painting something on the base edge, but Im not sure if that would screw up the aesthetic.

Lovely models, but I hate the anime hair on the official site. I looked at some of the elite models first, and those are cool, but the models you bought have some horrible art. A schmuck green haired 'dude'. Sheesh.

I'm not too fond of the basic infantry from the Infinity range, a lot of them seem to be in odd poses for the sake of being in odd poses. :( Not that GW ever does that, of course!

Style-wise Infinity's pretty much 'Shadowrun meets Masamune Shirow' - enough so that I could pick out which of his characters the models are based on! But when you get into the heavy armour and drones, there are some superb models in there, I may well pick up a few for some Appleseed/Ghost in the Shell based games.

In case you've not come across Masamune Shirow's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masamune_Shirow) work, do so ASAP!

Anyway, if you're not sure what I'm talking about, please look at the Guijia (http://www.corvusbelli.com/en/02_tiendainf_rtdo.asp?IDNOTICIA=328) and tell me with a straight face that it isn't a Heavy Guges class Landmate (http://www.takotech.net/mshd/shirow/img/landmatebw.jpg). :D In fact, when I went searching on Google for an image of a Landmate, guess what turned up (http://www.tiendaociojoven.com/trade/productview/1027298/19599/guijia-tag-landmate-.html)?

Some of the drones (http://www.corvusbelli.com/en/02_tiendainf_rtdo.asp?IDNOTICIA=325) would also make excellent Fuchickomas (http://splutterfish.com/sf/Images/img_d10_fuchikoma_cam2_ghost_GI_dof_finale.jpg) (semi-AI mini-tanks), although they may be a bit small as Fuchikomas are supposed to hold a person inside.

Hmm. Looking through the range again, I could end up spending a bit too much money on heavy metal:
Szalamandra Squadron (http://www.corvusbelli.com/en/02_tiendainf_rtdo.asp?IDNOTICIA=379)
Maghariba Guard (http://www.corvusbelli.com/en/02_tiendainf_rtdo.asp?IDNOTICIA=395)
'Landmate' (http://www.corvusbelli.com/en/02_tiendainf_rtdo.asp?IDNOTICIA=328)

Looking forward to following this thread...

Yeah, they are very derivative of other designs, especially ghost in the shell stuff. I definately know shirows work, I have the entire ghost in the shell series in graphic novel form :D

I agree on the light infantry, they are my least favorite models in the ranges. I felt that the Nomads light infantry was probably the best of the bunch.

I love almost all of the sculpts though...my favorite ranges are Yu Jing, Haqqislam, and Nomads. The only one I can say I DONT like are the Ariadna. Just not that appealing to me, and I think those dog warrior dudes are dumb.

Quoted for truth!

Apart from licensing issues, I'm actually quite keen on the derivative designs - they certainly picked the right stuff to copy! The only other Appleseed-styled figures I can remember seeing in 25/28mm scale were some really appalling ones by Ground Zero Games.

Did you pin some of the models to their bases instead of using the slotta tab? If so, any practical advice for making a pinned base more durable for tabletop play?

Your thead over on the Infinity forum is attracting quite a lot of attention. Usually not a lot of WIP activity on that board.

Wow I can't wait for the next update.. It's sad really I don't do anything with my life and find myself checking this thread 3-4 times a day. Frost you've pretty much converted me, I'm going to be ordering some Nomands and the rulebook soon! I read the Quick Start rules and was completely inthrawled (spelling?) with how the system works, it seems so fast paced and bloody. It probably works best in a campain/scenario based right? Or is it just as fun in an all-out gunfight?
Anyways, we should brainstorm sweet scenarios to play.

No painting updates, but I just received more Nomad stuff (intruders, hellcats) and the PanOceania starter that I bought so I could get my friends to play :D

Ill probably post some more progress tonight, including finishing that Aguacile.

Lithian: Thanks for your interest! I clipped off most of the tab and put what was left in a hole in the base on most of the models, or just filled their slot with putty, or for one, just glued her feet down to the plasticard. They are pretty strong, and after primer/paint/varnish, they should be TT ready. Im very careful with my models during TT play, though ;)

The face could have a wash of Brown Ink and then a highlight of Elf Flesh, and the same goes for the griphon "kid" (what's the term in this case? I'm not sure kitten will work), although the highlight will be Bleached Brown. The brown feathers are dark enough, but some lighter highlights would work wonders, and then you'd need to paint the skulls from the beginning with (one of these colours or a similar yoou have or want to use) Snakebite Brown or Graveyard Earth, and then highlight with Vomit Brown or Kommando Khaki and then Bleached Bone and at last a fine highlight of Skull White. The metal looks really good actually, so I can't give you any advice at the moment. :)

The flying-ish guy with the grenade launcher is awesome ... and if that isn't a 'nade launcher it's still a wonderful huge gun. In fact all of the models in the top 3 pics are great looking. Actually, the only models I don't like are the guys in the brown & red suits - the tight uniform looks mighty fine on the chica, but kinda wuguh? on the dudes.

You may have something on the getting free stuff angle. I say you go for it, and let me add only thing keeping me from throwing down for some Infinity is the $$$ and that no one here plays. Yet.

Hehe, its a Hellcat...basically medium infantry that can drop deploy anywhere on the table whenever you want. The big gun is an ADHL, which is an adhesive launcher...you can gum up the big mechs or heavy armor guys with it. Im actually using it as a boarding shotgun for now though, because the only counter to adhesive is engineers, which dont have models yet...so its kind of considered cheesy to use it.

But yeah, I love those Hellcats. The intruder sniper is fricking awesome too :D

They recommend using the starter box, or around 150 pts when starting out to learn the rules. I ran the starter Ariadna starter box through the mill last night and hit 150 pts with only 5 models (just lacking one grunt). And that even filled up all three support weapon slots.

Five models, that's not a lot to paint at all (>insert hypnotic swirly noises<).

FearFrost
16-02-2007, 04:08
VGC bloody red.

Really thin bloody red mixed with blackgreen (snot green + black), paint it in the shade areas. Mix a bit more bloody red in it, making it lighter than the first shade but darker than bloody red. Shade the panels bottom edges with this.

Clean up with bloody red.

Highlight 3 steps:

Bloody red mixed with light yellow
then add white to mix
then final is a tiny bit more white added

6 layers, fairly quick.

I need some help with my colour scheme, all I know so far is that I'm going to be doing the armour a hawk turquoise colour and the gun casing is going to be black with extreme highlights (including white dots to make it look shiney). what else would go well with these colours?

For nomads, right?

I would say maybe a reddish brown for the cloth, if you are doing their armor panels in turq. Maybe some yellow or orange trim would look cool :)

Hey asecondtoolate, Exit., & nanktank, if you guys want to combine and do a group Infinity project log, Iím all for that. Good idea Frost, thanks. For one thing, I paint about as fast as asecondtoolate does. ;)

Iíve already got one gift certificate from me mum, now Iím just waiting to see if my dad is going to send one too (one of the few benefits of having divorced parents, double the birthday money! ) Iíll probably place my order in the middle of next week.

Iím also going to be doing terrain too nanktank. Iíve already cut around 60 or so 2Ēx2Ē pieces of plexi-glass to use for windows, doors, and skylights, and Iíve already made polystyrene my personal be-yatch. So PM me (so we donít clutter up Frostís thread) and let me know if you guys want to kick it off, maybe next weekend or so. :)

You guys log would rule...and..

I think and Infinity terrain blog would be fricking awesome. I always come up with great ideas for terrain and then try to build them and suck it up. So maybe if we all just contributed to it we could help each other out with concepts. The CB terrain they use in photos is SO amazing!

3D art isnt my thing...I guess my specialty is paint ;)

But yeah, I have a bunch of cans/jars/containers/etc that I am going to use to make some hopefully high tech looking terrain stuff. I want to score some PVC piping and some of those plastic I-beams, as well as drinking straws, which make groovy looking pipes and what not.

I also want to try and make some high tech looking hovercars or something like that to populate the city streets...hopefully making some good cover :) Maybe a trip to the toystore is in order :D

Plexiglass terrain = awesome! Id love to see some sort of "force screen" windows or walls made out of it, maybe tinting it with some kind of dye or something.

My goal is to get 6 nomads and 6 pan oceania built and painted...then concentrate on my terrain.

You guys can feel free to put ideas in here about anything Infinity related...this thread seems to be the warseer Infinity hangout, which is totally sweet :) Ask here or PM me about any rules/fluff questions...Im learning too, but I would definately love to discuss the game as much as possible with you gents.

Kewl. As far as cars go, I use the Maisto die cast cars that Wal Mart sells through their Kid-Connect line. They are something like 1:36 or 1:38, and only cost $2. They also have motorcycles too for around $1.50 or so. I get them for my boys, they trash them, and then I sock them away to paint up later for burning wrecks. I have about 4 or 5 right now. They are a tad big, but I think they work fine. I've seen simular cars in packs at Toys-R-Us too.

Link 2 (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b187/wgallen/Misc/Car1.jpg)

I was thinking hover car too. Did you see the Appleseed CGI movie? I was thinking I could take one of the above cars, yank the tires, make a pin, and put the tires back on at a downward angle, and make a simple hover base. I was thinking of using those "googly-eyes" to make the "hover-hubcap-assemby", if you know what I mean?

I gotta go home, more ideas later this weekend.

Well I could hardly call myself a player, as I have yet to play a game, however I am definitly on the path. For all us terrain modelers, here is an essay I found while looking for inspiration for the terrain http://www.depauw.edu/sfs/backissues/80/wong80art.htm an interesting essay on cyberpunk cityscapes.

Also on the english infinity forums in the modelling section, there is a beautiful terrain piece they made for the rulebook they used stucco plaster mixed with pva for the walls, this gave a very natural concrete texture. http://www.infinitythegame.com/foro/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1356&sid=8adb9eb22304065abcd59bec8339e2d4 Once I figure out how to post pics on warseer, Ill start a terrain blog with my first piece, an apartment block.

Great link! I'll have to go through that in more detail.

If you've not seen the Appleseed books they are great source material for terrain modelling ideas:

Halfway down this page (http://mshp.motime.com/?from=70) there are a few scanned in pictures.
Otherwise have a look at the opening scenes of trailer for the newer Appleseed movie (Flash version on this site (http://www.appleseed.net.au/index2.html)), (iTunes version (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/redirect?url=itms://www.apple.com/moviesxml/s/independent/appleseed/index.xml)).
There's a couple of screen shots here (http://www.xt1.org/blog/2004/11/), not so useful but the doorways are quite handy for styling.
Also the background in this book cover (http://www.takotech.net/mshp/media/users/lucas/appleseed_book1.jpg).

Hey Frost,

Long time no update! What's the deal man?!
I'm in the long process of cleaning/assembling my models (it's taking forever, but im slow.) I'm still not sure of a colourscheme, do you think a rotting flesh type colour would work for the clothes? it kind of has a greenish tint to it and would tie in with the turquoise armour i think.

but what's a good shade for rotting flesh? :(

FearFrost
21-02-2007, 18:37
Sorry guys, busy week at school, painting...canvases ;)

Im not sure about rotting flesh...maybe mix a dark red into it to make a shade. I would try bleached bone, too, as another option.

I didnt update because the work I did last night was pretty minimal...cleaned up the blacklining and added one more final highlight to the guns metal. I also did the hackers facemask thing. Ill post pics when I finish em :)

My only problem with the PDF file for templates is that the light flame template ends up clipped when it gets printed. Boo.

Im probably just going to scan the ones out of the books and print em. Id mount them on some type of plastic if you can. I made some ghetto camo/wound/etc. counters by "laminating" the printed ones with packing tape, then using scissors to trim them up.

The round templates are exactly CD sized, so just use old CD-R's or AOL discs to mount em on.

Thanks!

Hahahha, Yeah I live in Canada. but not the cold part! it's above zero where I live.. It just rains every day :(
I just might pick up the same brand that I have for my black primer, it seems to work well enough (some type of Krylon super-matte black)

Dang it Fearfrost! Your minis are looking good. The hellcats have very dynamic, albeit unrealistic-anime-style poses, cool!

So here's the score:

Thats sort of a tall order...there isnt really a cute faction, or even an all female faction. There are just a lot of female models scattered throughout the range, which I think is pretty awesome.

Cute. Hrm. Maybe you guys should look on CMON, just look at random models until you find a color scheme she likes (cute) and use it on the models?

I bet even hardass Combined Army dudes look cute in pink/teal :)

Hope this photo is a bit better than the last couple:

Looking great as ever, those have to be some of my favoriteist Infinty models, love the movement and the Heavy webber is just plain massive.

The grey looks awesome, what will you be painting brown?

Thanks!

Im not sure if there will be any brown at all, actually. I want the schemes to have similar colors, but since the hellcats are more elite, I figured they would use a slightly different palette, but still have red/dark green/grey.

We'll see how that goes ;)

A bit of an update, the light green and dark green areas are done, but that flat grey on the wings and guns is just basecoated and will be much brighter NMM. Next up: the red, probably.

However, I have to say it again, I don't like the models; too ott and crazy poses for my liking, especially the first model you painted.

Hey ya'.

I wouldn't mind at all. Not sure if it matters, since you're not stealing the character as a whole, but it's from a Marvel Comics character named Sunfire (just FYI).
It'd actually be pretty cool to see them like that, I'm honored that you'd want to use it.

Nice work!

It's good to see someone that still uses a white undercoat.

I usually undercoat white (depends on the colours I'll be using) and get some great results.. plus I just find it more fun than layering up over black.

The grey/red suits are splendid, nothing more to say about it (that was always one of my favourite color combinations) though I'm not so keen on the blue helmet. Perhaps dark asphalt with yellow lane markings. Take a look at the current black gobbo under ravenwing basing. Throw in some manhole covers as well.

You could also cut half the base away and lay mesh on top with tubes underneath. It'll take a bit of effort, but the end result will be 3-D and look really urban.

IJW
16-03-2007, 22:49
Throw in some manhole covers as well.
I found some brass manhole covers here (http://www.langleymodels.co.uk/acatalog/Shop_Front_O_Scale_Accessories_8.html) which should be roughly to scale. :)

They also have a Tardi... erm, Police Box. ;)

FearFrost
17-03-2007, 05:26
Not bad ideas, but I was trying to keep them really simple, since I have to finish my army and this one is sort of a quick side project. I might just mix some chunks of plasticard into some rubble, make it look like streets with some damage.

Did the red on the intruders...Im very happy with the result, only about 4 or 5 layers:
