View Full Version : Wayfarer's Inquisition (plus Menoth and Eldar)

09-02-2007, 07:24
After being inspired by some (most) of the project logs here I figured I'd start my own up and share my work with anyone who's interested. This log is going to cover my Deamonhunters force and my Witchhunters force primarily but if it's still going when those armies are done it'll cover my Eldar.

Here is a list of minis that I own and that are incomplete:
12 GK
2 GK with Incinerators
1 GK Justicar
1 GK Dread
20 IST

1 Cannoness
3 Sister Superiors
2 Heavy Flamer Sisters
3 Stormbolter Sisters
1 Meltagun Sister
4 Heavy Bolter Sisters
13 SoBs
6 Seraphim
2 Rhinos
1 Immolator
1 Exorcist

Menoth battlegroup
(and a small Eldar force that I wont list yet)

Currently on my workbench to be converted are two GK with Incinerators, one GK Justicar, and one GKT. My current painting projects are a Sister Superior, a Meltagun Sister, a Heavy Flamer Sister, and a Rhino.

Here is the ubiquitous workspace shot:
You can see some piles of bits that will soon become the Grey Knights.

Here is an early mockup of an Incinerator GK. I've since done a bit of work on this one and will be posting new pics soon.

Here are the earliest shots of my WiP GKT:
I got my inspiration for my GKT from TrooperPX over at WiP. (I currently have a thread detailing the creation of all of my GK which I can cross-post here if there is a demand for it)

09-02-2007, 07:24
Here are the PiP sisters in a very early stage:

These will be painted and based like these 7 that I've finished:

Menoth PiPs:

I'll be posting an update pretty soon with the latest pictures and hopefully I'll be updating this once a week or more.

Btw, why do you convert a GK with incenerator? GWs are not that bad, although not that yours are not good but...

That GKT looks very big and mean, will you finish him soon?

Those sisters looks nice.

The Sisters of Battle look great! I'll be watching this thread, you have some very interesting SM conversions, now I want to see them painted!

The only critique I can think of would be that the bases of your SOB seem a bit flat and dull, but otherwise it's all good!

i love the GK terminator, could you please do a tutorial to show how to make one. the GK in power armour i dont like so much cause it just dosnt look right.

oh siney. And that incinerator looks truely huge!

09-02-2007, 19:26
Here are the first 5 GK I had done before I started this thread. I think that after you guys see them you'll have a better point of reference to where my current wips are going.

This is a shot I took after I had primed them and put a few basecoats down.

And here is a pic of them before paint (and before I sculpted their ammo belts) so that you can see more clearly the work I do to each one.

silveryfox: I field two incinerators because a force consisting of nothing but vanilla GKs, while tactically smart, is boring as possible. The termie should be done fairly soon I think.

Dominus: I sort of feel that way also but I need more practice on my bases. It's one area that I haven't focused much on in the past. These bases do have quite a lot of layers of paint on them and perhaps a better picture is in order.

Varks: Just keep an eye on this thread and you'll see how I make these. Not only do I have a bit left on this one but I have three more to make. I'll be sure to take a few extra wip pics of them.

Octo: It's based on the termie heavy flamer, and based on its stats I like to think that an Incinerator would be more like a heavy flamer than a flamer. (You guys will probably hate my psycannons, nothing like the tiny pea shooters that GW makes)

09-02-2007, 20:15
Like the GS work on the GKs! I also like the SoBs a lot, although the bases seem a bit simple :)

09-02-2007, 20:21
The dog has GREEN eyes!!!!! Better get those GK's into action soon!

09-02-2007, 20:28
Very nice GKs, but great to see more Warmachine stuff.

10-02-2007, 07:04
Here are some pics of the work I did today:

The legs are black because I primed them to check the smoothness of my greenstuff work. Of course there were some areas that needed a bit more sanding so I took care of that. Otherwise this Termy is getting pretty close to finished.

Hey ya'.

Everything looks good... except the dog's not based. ;)

I love your Grey Knights! At first, I didn't even see that they weren't the real deal, I thought: "Oh, he's converted the poses or something", but it turned out to be something rather more extensive. Good work.

And please, you have to base the dog, it's not tournament-worthy.

10-02-2007, 11:06
Excellent conversion work on those grey knights; very good :D Nice painting on the SOBs as well :)

looking forward to seeing more

12-02-2007, 06:42
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Really encourages me. I've been converting a lot lately so I took some time off from that, saving my fingers any more cuts, and did some painting.

These aren't anywhere near finished as I have yet to paint the faces, hair, the white parts of the armor, and then touchups. I gave silver/chrome nmm a shot. It came out ok for a first try but I'll probably paint over it. I also am about halfway through the nmm gold/copper on the heavy flamer.

I can't decide if I want to add a fuel hose to an additional tank on the incinerator GKs backpack or leave it as is. Any thoughts?

17-02-2007, 05:50
Small update.

Next update will most likely have a lot more pictures, mainly of the GKT.

17-02-2007, 09:12
nice work on those Grey Knights wayfarer; I especially like the middle one.
I'm not too keen on the terminators though; the proportion just doesn't work for me I'm afraid. Maybe I'll change my mind when I see some painted.

Keep up the good conversion work though :D

17-02-2007, 11:59
OMG i love the non metalics youve done on those SoB's. any chance of a tut?

17-02-2007, 13:57
great conversions!

17-02-2007, 21:43
your insane man, insane. FINALLY I find more insane brothers :D
Even tough im nurgle, and makes an army of miniature nurglins in powerarmor I still can't resist to enjoy this thread with these amazing DH!

18-02-2007, 05:03
I finished converting up the incinerators, the justicar, and the GKT. These pictures were taken just shortly before completion so a few small details are missing.

I suppose I am a bit insane, if only because of the fact that by now I could have my entire DH force painted and on the table had I not decided to convert the entire army.

As far as the NMM, any online tutorial will tell you better than I could. Honestly I stumble across results by accident.

18-02-2007, 05:06
Here's the justicar.

He's in a parry stance which can look sort of awkward at first. I wanted something other than the standard sword at the ready pose that you see so often. I have since sculpted the handle on the stormbolter, I don't know why I forgot to sculpt it before I took the pictures.

18-02-2007, 05:07
And finally this evening, the incinerators.

Comments and criticism always welcome.

18-02-2007, 05:37
hey nice work:D

i like the nmm alot

18-02-2007, 10:31
Great Justicar there Wayfarer, and the incinerators look good too :)

21-02-2007, 08:16
Thanks a lot guys. You know with as popular as eldar are right now, and the number of eldar logs going I figured that they would be in less demand. Things have been sort of slow going, however I'm finally getting better and got some other stuff out of the way so I should have some updates coming soon.

I primed the GKT, and the GK's that I showed in my last update. I also started on another GKT this time with a psycannon. I'm waiting on some bits I recently ordered so in the meantime I'll probably finish the SoB's I posted a little while ago. Also I worked a bit on my Menoth battlebox. I think I'll finish those up first because this forum needs more Warmachine.

Also coming soon is a rhino with some small mods. However painting vehicles isn't very fun for me so I've been putting it off.

21-02-2007, 17:35
I like the justicars pose a lot- he looks very active, and he will look even better in battle.

22-02-2007, 05:19
Finished up those SoB's from before. Now I have a complete squad finished sans rhino. I also did some work on the bases for my Menoth stuff so those will be next. I hope I can get them close to done by friday but with all the nmm that the warjacks have I doubt it.

22-02-2007, 14:49
Great sisters there Wayfarer. Nice neat, clean colours. Good scheme on them as well, the white and green work very nicely.

Looking forward to more :)

01-03-2007, 03:41
Small update yet again. As I predicted I wouldn't be able to get my menoth done by friday. (not even close...) However, I did get work done on them, and now I have a question. On the left is a nearly finished model with wip NMM gold and on the right is a much more wip model with traditional (sort of, I mix normal colors into my metallics) metal paints. Which is more appealing?

The normal matallics paint very quickly so I'd be able to get these things on the table by next week perhaps, however I always worry that metallic paint looks a bit flat despite shading and highlights. The NMM can look good but only if I sink hours and hours into each model and even then often I find it lacking.

Also a recent trip to the hobby store got me this awesome little item:

And to the left you can see what I've been hacking up with it. I'm really happy with this purchase and it's cheap to boot.

god octo
01-03-2007, 17:03
Nice colour scheme on the sisters- green is very rarly used and it looks very good.

06-03-2007, 03:42
Well I'm a bit bummed that no one had any opinions about my warjacks but oh well. Anyway, I've been working on a tutorial for the GKT's and also I finally got around to the primed rhino. It's just the start of the basecoats, and painting it with a brush is leaving me with substandard results. I think I'm going to give it more than its fair share of battle damage to hide my poor painting and extra armour mod.

Anyway, here it is:

06-03-2007, 04:07
More Menoth! I like how everything is looking. I doubt I'll be able to do the metal on my 'Jacks as well as you do, but it is inspiring to see Menoth stuff with paint on it.

16-03-2007, 04:31
I'm glad you like the jacks. Right now though they are soaking in simple green because I wanted to do my own custom scheme, even though I like the official one. For now here are some pics of some of what I've been doing. I wanted to work on something different so I started on a test IST and also I started converting what will be my entry for the march WIP contest.

Shortened barrel for tight quarters lasering, underslung targetter, carapace armor, and a rebreather mask with light filtering optics. Obviously there is a lot more to do.

This one is going to be a canoness with jump pack, blessed weapon, and cloak.

17-03-2007, 03:21
More work on the canoness. I cut her waist to shorten her. This left a massive crag like join that I considered hiding with a belt. Instead I figured that it'd be better to challenge myself so I sculpted a standard sisters power armor corset. This picture also shows the leg detail better. The cloak I might peal off and resculpt because I'm bad with flowing robes and such.

I still need to sculpt in detail on the shoulderpad, and smooth out the corset.

17-03-2007, 03:25
That is fantastic work. :) No Seraphim jump-pack though?

17-03-2007, 15:07
Nice use of Misericord.

17-03-2007, 19:48
Just a few criticisms of the cannonness:
- The jump pack looks far too bulky for the rest of the model; she's quite slim and she looks like he's likely to topple over at any moment.
- The hood is also a bit too heavy-looking.

Nice idea though and it could look very good :)

17-03-2007, 22:11
Yeah I wasn't happy with my first cloak sculpt so I did it over last night. And today I did the sleeves and the right shoulder pad, which are still wet in this picture. Once it's all dry I have some trimming and filing to do, then sculpt a fleur de li on the right shoulder pad. The pack doesn't look too big on the model now that it has its arms and right shoulder pad.

Plus I don't much care for the seraphim packs. I suppose I could scratch build a pack but then I wouldn't have any time to paint it before march was done.

17-03-2007, 22:15
To be honest, I think that the robes or whatever are far to big and puffy for her to be combat efficient. The first robe over her head reminds me of Kenny from South Park. I mean, her field of vision is right infront of her with no peripheral vision. The leg and paddings of her are good, especially the leg with fleur-de-lys pad, but the robes don't do it for me.

30-03-2007, 07:05
Now that I'm done with my contest entry I got back to working on the rhino. Here is a pip. Keep in mind that the white parts aren't even really basecoat, the focus is on the green portions. Also I really need to set up a light box because this picture is the best I could get and it's grainy. Also you can just barely make out the highlight layers and rust on the rivets. EDIT: I updated the pic so it's a little clearer.

I decided, after painting up the first squad unfortunately, that I wanted my SoBs to look really worn and bashed. So on the rhino I made it look filthy, gave it some battle damage (more to be added), and I am in the process of making the extra armor look as though it had been installed in the field in haste. I.e. rough cut plates that are welded together and covered in rust. Also, the last touch to be added are the large fleur de lyis on the sides and top.

01-04-2007, 02:18
Little update on the painting. I have the tracks and bolter barrels left to paint, battle damage on the white areas, and then some freehand stuff. I'm thinking I'm going to tone down the rust on the white armor plating. I'd love some opinions on the subject.

01-04-2007, 02:31
How did I ever miss this log. Great conversions and paint work on the DH, WH and NMM. That rhino isn't looking half bad either! I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.

02-04-2007, 01:05
Aside from a varnish it's complete. The freehand was a pain and it isn't exactly perfect but I think it's passable.

My camera will be away for three weeks or so, so this'll be the last picture update for a while. When I get the camera back I should have a lot to post. I hope you guys enjoy the rhino and comments are welcome.

02-04-2007, 01:12
The weathering is consistent and beautiful. :) I like the freehand too. How long did it take you? You seemed to finish it rather quickly, considering all that's been put into it.

06-04-2007, 10:11
You know I don't ever keep track of the hours I put into my work. I'm glad you like it though. As for finishing it quickly, sometimes that happens if I'm getting results I like. It motivates me and I just keep working until my hands stop working. Oh yeah, I picked these up a few days ago so now I have a full 500 pt force. Now I just need to paint the whole thing.

So now I have:
Paladin of the Wall
Examplar Senechal

I think it's a good basic army to start and learn the game with.

Also here is the finished canoness for those who didn't check out the competition here.

06-04-2007, 10:43
Hmm, not too sure about the canoness still. I'm with Kharangar on this; the hood looks far too puffy and the jet-pack looks out of scale. Nicely painted though :)

The rhino is also looking good; very nice weathering on it.

I shall be interested to see more of the privateer press models. What are you doing next?

23-04-2007, 01:13
My digicam is back so I have some updates to make. Five GK and a GKT are just about done baring some minor things before priming. Also I have that ISt I showed a page back further along. I just posted two wordy updates on other forums so for now I'll just leave you with the pictures.

23-04-2007, 01:16

And now the GKT.

Questions and constructive crits are always welcome.

Next up are more SoBs I think. One more squad and its transport before I move on to Menoth. Although I can't make any promises because I tend to wander from one project to the other.

23-04-2007, 02:00
Sir that GKT is absolutely insane. But a mighty fine conversion! The armies looking very nice, something you can be very proud of.

23-04-2007, 09:58
Excellent conversions on the GKs Wayfarer :D

I'd suggest looking at Gropius' project log for a good alternative way of adding Carapace armour to guardsmen; he's done it very well IMO.

I look forward to more.

23-04-2007, 10:54
wow very nice!

27-04-2007, 05:47
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you guys like them.

Here are the latest four sisters from squad two. I need to make a lightbox or something because a lot of detail is lost.

Edit: Managed a better picture.

27-04-2007, 13:10
lovely sisters Wayfarer. The greeen looks very nicely highlighted and goes well with the white.

I look forward to more :D

04-05-2007, 01:00
Small little update here. Just some progress on the SoBs. Not pictured are the last two of the squad who are in the early basecoat stage of painting. Aside from a little blacklining the green is done on these. It's the most time consuming part of the mini to do as I try very hard to get smoother blends on it.

04-05-2007, 13:29
More very nice work Wayfarer :)

04-05-2007, 20:04
what model did you base the canoness on?

05-05-2007, 09:44
Always good to see converted armies, will be watching with interest

god octo
05-05-2007, 10:47
what model did you base the canoness on?

Yes, please tell us! Your painting is very good, and I like the pose on the cannoness- is very fighty, like the rest of your army, if that makes sense.

05-05-2007, 11:50
what model did you base the canoness on?

It looks like the alternative pose Victoria Haley...am I right?

05-05-2007, 20:50
It's Mira the Reckless from Rackham. I've always loved the sculpt, and I had the idea of turning it into a canoness for a long time. I just had to wait until I felt that I could do the conversion justice. I'm not entirely pleased with it, but that's how I feel about all of my work and it inspires me to improve.

Also, though I've been distracted, I should have those four SoBs done soon and a pic of them up. I was watching Spider-man 3 instead of painting like I should have been.

What is the body on you gkt thing...First post pics?

05-05-2007, 21:00
That would be Couger suits from SST. I got the idea from TrooperPX over at WiP, though I went about my conversions very differently then he did. Honestly I wouldn't use them again now that I've seen them up close. It may only be that I got a bad box but the castings were very poor. In the future I think I'll stick to plastic termies.

10-05-2007, 03:19
Well here are those four finished up. I think I'm going to invest in a few lamps and a light tent because it's hard to get clear shots and I've tried quite a few things. These SoBs took longer than normal, not to paint but just to get time to paint. The last two should be done by the end of the week and then it's time for another rhino.

10-05-2007, 05:35
Really nice work, I love the rhino's weathering especially!

10-05-2007, 06:33
love the sisters' rhino and great conversions on the grey knights. the terminator , while a really cool conversion, especially the autocannon, still looks slightly off though

12-05-2007, 04:28
Fearfrost: Coming from you that's a huge compliment. (I love your infinity stuff, speaking of which paint more of it!)

Thanks for the comments people. I know I may not always reply individually but I read everything posted and it inspires me to keep working. Anyway, I've finished the last two SoBs and as such the squad is finished. These aren't the best pictures (something I intend to remedy soon) but you can get the jist of it.

And the whole squad together:

On the workbench right now is their rhino which I should be able to paint in 3-4 days if nothing comes up.

Hey ya'.

The green and white scheme looks really good. And the icon on the sword is awesome, really well done.

13-05-2007, 04:57
I looked around on the internet and after checking out a few sites I decided to make my own lightbox and in addition get some more lights with better bulbs. With a small investment and a late afternoons work I came up with this:

It, along with my new lights, three standard desk lamps with 40w daylight bulbs (the swirly kind), results in this:

I think it looks better and I haven't even played around with lighting position and different backdrops yet. I'm glad I finally decided to get a proper light setup and it wasn't hard (or expensive) at all.

13-05-2007, 14:28
Lovely work Wayfarer :D
The pics are still a bit blurry though...

18-05-2007, 19:48
I hope its not done, because it seems it lacks some highlights.. looks unfinnished :/

19-05-2007, 02:12
Here's the finished rhino. This time I added an additional green shade so it has one more transition color than the first. Also because this has slightly different armor upgrade I didn't have as much room for the freehand fleur de lis. I also left off the wings on the front because I thought it would clash too much with the aquila. It hasn't been varnished yet though so the screens aren't glossy.

I think changing my backdrop to blue might help a little bit but I think I've finally got some good pictures. Finishing this rhino has left me with 50% of my SoB force done (in model count alone not in number of units) so I think I'm going to just keep going until it's all finished. What I have left are some Seraphim, Dominions, Retributors, an Immolator, Exorcist, and a Palatine.

19-05-2007, 05:25
Beautiful work man

Im really liking that Rhino. The weathering is very well done.

Perhaps some more shading on the highest colour of Teal> looks a bit too solid

good worK!

19-05-2007, 18:14
Looks great Wayfarer :D Especially the nmm gold; that looks fantastic.

21-05-2007, 21:51
Glad you guys like it. Arhalien if you're talking about the aquilla I'm surprized because that was probably the simplest NMM I've done to date. Maybe simple is better.

On another note, I have to work fast around here to keep myself off of page 5. Too many quick painters. (and more popular threads than mine also. I guess sisters just can't get a break) (see I'm blaming the models so I don't have to blame myself for posting uninteresting updates, pretty clever huh?)

Anyway I decided to take a small break from painting and finish converting up the army. The exorcist is still a ways off but the retributors are ready to be primed. I always though that they should get just as much ammo as SM so they got some new backpacks. My dremel saved me a ton of work on these. In the background you can see the exorcist built except for the launcher and the armor mods. My next update will undoubtedly focus on that.

21-05-2007, 23:37
Your Rhinos totally rock, and i want to see those GKT finished and painted! ASAP! grargh!!!... -_- osome stuff

23-05-2007, 07:59
Thanks mf, you'll have to wait a while to see painted GKs though, at least until after my SoB army is finished and a warjack or two are painted.

Small update on what I've scratch built so far:

I'll have more detail shots once it's complete. I like the idea of the GW exorcist but not the model so I converted my own. I was originally going to use a whirlwind but that is an obvious and over-used 'conversion' and I wanted something more unique.

23-05-2007, 10:01
I'm totally confused as to how that's going to look in the end, but I'm also very intrigued ;)

23-05-2007, 10:25
Great Plasticard work, be of great interest on how this turns out.

25-05-2007, 07:36
Here is a small update. The launcher is done. I looked for a long time for something to use as the rockets until my fiance came up with the idea of using meat skewers (bless her beautiful brain). They worked out well, though they aren't perfectly uniform with each other. I've also begun the armor mod to make it look like it has the armor value that it does, as well as represent an extra armor mod. I think I'll save this one for last and go nuts on the freehand to make it look a little bit like the archaic and holy device that it is supposed to be.

I also plan on making a servo arm on the top of the vehicle to show how the launcher is loaded.

25-05-2007, 08:33
beasty! I've got something similar, I found a huge missle launcher (god knows where from) and was gona mount it on a rhino, points noted on how to do it!

27-05-2007, 03:09
A few pics of the servo arm (this was another painful learning process but really fun) that rips off heretic heads and occasionally loads missiles.

This right here means that my SoB army is 100% assembled and converted. What isn't pictured is the finished armor mod. I'm gonna take a brief break I think and then get back at it.

27-05-2007, 08:39
That is crazy lol

27-05-2007, 18:22
Looking great :) Although the supports do look a bit spindly to me.

28-05-2007, 02:31
Couple of detail shots before I primed it. (Though my spray can ran out halfway through...)

Lately I've been thinking about sculpting in some reliefs on the exorcist but I'm not sure how that'd turn out.

Edit: Wonder what I did to deserve that 1 someone dropped on me.

Ouch. Nasty. This thread really doesn;t deserve a 1.

I think some sculpted details on the exorcist could work well; the front does look a bit plain atm.

And it is very irritating when a spray can runs out part way through priming.

Keep up the good work :)

02-06-2007, 07:42
I planned on taking a break and that failed. I spent most of my hobby time sculpting my Menoth bases and assembling the rest of the army. Tomorrow it's primer time. Also I'm painting up a light jack because I think I've come up with a color scheme I like. I'm having some trouble making the type of cold white that I had planned so who knows. Anyway I haven't updated in a few days so here are some crummy pictures to hold you over.

I'll probably have another pic or two up soon with progress on this jack. If it goes well I think I'll paint up the Repenter as well. Thanks for the comments, it keeps me painting and converting!

02-06-2007, 08:51
Mate, I'm so jealous of those bases! I haven't got a clue as to what to do with the bases, and all my menoth units are just stewing in the cabinet for not being looked at...

can't wait for that jack either!

02-06-2007, 08:52
No it doesn't deserve a one, great detailing, what are you using as rivets?

02-06-2007, 09:14
MF3000: If you like the bases make some yourself. It's really easy. Just some putty of choice (you can see I started with greenstuff but I didn't like how much I had to use so I switched to milliput) and flatten a layer on the base and drag lines through it in whatever pattern you like. I went for a variety of flagstone with some patterns for flavor.

Jasevx: For rivets I carefully slice small plastic rod with a sharp exacto knife and plop the slices on with plastic glue. They aren't as uniform as you would get with a holepunch but you don't have to go to the trouble of buying a holepunch.

06-06-2007, 07:45
Little update. I'm redoing the white because I decided that I wanted a nuetral to warm white rather than cold, and that was because I decided that I'd rather have a very warm red rather than a royal purple as the secondary color. It's a lot like the studio scheme but with a small twist. I can't seem to manage perfect focus (and I've been trying everything) so the blending on the red is hard to see and it's a shame because it's probably my best work to date.

Another thing I did with this is use normal metallic paints. I've found that usually normal metallics look flat so I tried to use some of the same principles that I use with NMM on my normal metals. It isn't blended but after some glazes I think it turned out nice. Granted I'm not done with that either, nor am I done with the orange eyes and arc node. I'm debating whether or not to try out some subtle OSL.

So that leaves the metals to work some more, the white, the orange spots, and the base. I may get lucky and have enough time to finish it all tomorrow but who knows.

06-06-2007, 20:53
That is looking very nice! :D

The red and white are brilliantly vibrant and the red highlighting is great :D

09-06-2007, 02:37
Thanks Arhalien. The red is the best part of the mini to me. I think I was really in the zone for that. In many ways this mini is my best work to date. It is very far from perfect but I like it. It has a worn but maintained feel to it that is almost exactly what I was going for. I wanted it to look as though it had seen it's fair share of battles but was actually repaired now and again. So I didn't paint on any battle damage, but I made sure that it didn't look like it was fresh out of the paint booth. Anyway, enough with the talky talky and on with the pics. They aren't the best but they'll have to do.

Up next is the repenter and then a dominion squad. (although this, as always, is subject to change)

09-06-2007, 11:33
Great work :D The red still looks fanatstic, and the whole scheme works really well as a whole :)

11-06-2007, 06:51
I'm glad you like it Arhalien. Honestly though I don't know why I'm not getting a clear focus. I'm doing everything I should be doing and the pics come out fuzzy regardless.

On another note, upon trying out a new technique the repenter is now in a simple green bath and so progress is delayed.

Also, why all the views and no replys? Is it because I jump from one project to another or just that no one likes sisters and menoth? Or is it because no one likes my sisters and menoth?

11-06-2007, 08:27
Well done Wayfarer! I really enjoy seeing threads like this where you've put in a lot of effort. That Terminator looks incredibly angry...and it seems to be focused at somehing directly in front of him :D The SoBs look like a completely different army which is brilliant because they're supposed too.

11-06-2007, 12:42
I'm glad you like it Arhalien. Honestly though I don't know why I'm not getting a clear focus. I'm doing everything I should be doing and the pics come out fuzzy regardless.

Have you got the macro function on?
It should be a button with a little flower next to it.
Turn it on and that should help

If it's on already I don't know what's wrong I'm afraid

13-06-2007, 09:11
Here is a quick little terrible pic I took of the repenter. All I have left to do is the red and some touch ups. I painted more today than I normally ever do and if I could keep up this pace I'd have all of my armies done in two months.

13-06-2007, 12:26
Nice as usual Wayfarer :D
Is that from a white basecoat? If not, how do you get that white so smooth?

14-06-2007, 04:08
I start these jacks with a black primer, and a white primer isn't really needed for a smooth white. It's just a little tedious. First I lay down a nice smooth layer of a light grey, in this case Stonewall grey. One or two coats at most will do it. Then I thin down my white to a 1:2 paint:water/flowaid ratio. This is really thin so it takes a lot of coats but the results are a smoother white. Though I've noticed that this method can and will amplify any and all irregularities in a model.

So I finished the repenter today. This is the fastest I've ever painted a model before. It's to the same standard as the revenger for consistency. The pics (like with the revenger) add some grainyness that isn't actually there but it's better than no update at all. All in all I'm pleased with it, even if it has several problems.

I'm loving that red... Very nice.

14-06-2007, 10:53
Very nicely painted Wayfarer :)

19-06-2007, 07:48
Thank you very much. Got the Dominions done in 3 days. They turned out fairly well. I used a different method for the gold nmm than I did on the previous squads. Next is their Immolator.

19-06-2007, 09:21
Again; very nice stuff Wayfarer :D

26-06-2007, 07:29
Not much painting done lately but here's what I'm working on now.

26-06-2007, 09:14
Fantastic weathering around the edge of the plates Wayfarer :) The highlighting on that Fleur de Lys also looks great :D

01-07-2007, 10:28
I must apologise for not checking in here for a long while (I just saw your comment on lack of hits!)

These sisters are brilliant! The colour scheme is very original and really works! I love the excorcist conversion and the painting on the rhino is amazing! Looking forward to seeing this Immolator finished. I'm about to try and paint my rake of SOB vehicles and if I can achieve half what you have, I'll be made up!

This is going to be an awsome force, and I'm looking forward to a full army piccie update.

01-07-2007, 10:59
The green on the tank is awesome! can't wait to see more

04-07-2007, 05:50
Thanks for the comments, I'm glad that you guys like my stuff.

The immolator is finally finished, in more time than I wanted. I got distracted by a few things and then rushed a bit to finish it up. There are some areas I'm happy with and some I'm not, mainly the lens' and the clear "glass." I wanted to do more with them and at the same time I just wanted to finish the piece. It turned out ok I think and it fits in with the other vehicles so I'm not going to worry about it.

Next up are the seraphim, which have some minor conversion work done.

04-07-2007, 05:58
Wow, rinsing tank. I'd paint the canopy though.

04-07-2007, 09:38
Agreed with dr.oetk3r; I think you should paint the canopy frame; it looks a bit odd as you haven't

Otherwise, fantastic painting as ever; the weathering is brilliant :D

04-07-2007, 10:32
Love it, but I have to agree, the canopy needs attention.

What's next?

05-07-2007, 07:00
Thanks for the comments. I agree about the canopy, the more I looked at it the more I hated it so I gave it a simple paint job. I painted the frame black and gave the glass several very thin glazes of transparent blue and it turned out pretty nice. Also, early basecoating on the seraphim. I like to refer to this stage as pre-painting because I just block in the deep areas black and then lay in a first base coat of dark green in the appropriate areas.

05-07-2007, 07:04
Hey ya'.

Canopy looks much better like that IMO.

05-07-2007, 10:29
Much better canopy now; it looks much more realistic and fits with the model much more.

Great work :)

05-07-2007, 10:32
Yup, finished it off nicely!

05-07-2007, 22:11
Mmm! Much better! I like the idea of the blue wash, must try that myself.

Looking forward to the seraphim, I've just received a rake of inferno pistols to convert mine.

10-07-2007, 06:36
Little miniupdate because these are coming along a bit slower than I anticipated. It'll probably take me one more evening than I had planned which means they wont be done until wednesday if all goes well.

It's just a quick pic so there is loss of detail. You cannot tell that the hair is highlighted for example. It's a shame too because I'm quite pleased with the faces and hair. Hopefully once they're finished I'll be able to get some better quality photos. I think my digital camera just isn't made for small detail so who knows. I have to get a slr and a proper macro lens...

10-07-2007, 10:28
Hmm, looking nice :)

One thing though; are the wires to the arms going to stay as the only means of support, or will they be replaced? They just don't look that great to me atm.

10-07-2007, 11:12
It's a surprise.

10-07-2007, 18:24
Oooh a surprise!, goody goody! :D *Jumps up and down excitedly rapidly clapping hands*

Ahem. :eyebrows:

13-07-2007, 07:36
Well I underestimated finishing time by two and a half hours or so, but they're done.

And here are some closer shots. This is about as close as I can get with any decent amount of focus.

All in all I'm pretty happy with them, though I see plenty of small problems I think they look nice. Next up is the Palatine which I'll probably go to town on and enter it in this months competition.

13-07-2007, 08:12
Oh that's so cool! Great effect mate and the painting is awsome!

I'm sending mine over to you for painting!

13-07-2007, 08:48
I really like your colour scheme. My SOB are greeen too with white robes

15-07-2007, 05:14
Finished the Palatine in two days. I'm very happy with it for the most part. The flames aren't spot on, even on the second try but I think they look passable. This is my best work yet by a large margin, but as usual the pics are horrible crap and wash out about half of the transition layers and feathering. I feel that I should mention that even though this mini is as unfriendly to conversion as is possible, I love it. It's such a pleasure to paint.

I entered this in the july contest also, not that it'll even place but it's worth a shot. I wanted to save the canoness until last so that it'd be my best piece but I rushed to finish it for the last contest so now the Palatine is the showpiece of the army.

Thanks for the latest comments as always.

Holycrusader: Do you have any pictures of your SoBs?

Digitsdavid: I know you're kidding but if you weren't I'd be happy to do some commision work.

15-07-2007, 09:15
You're a very good painter and modeller, keep up the good work.

17-07-2007, 05:22
Up next:

bobert the great clen one
17-07-2007, 05:38
hello there wayfarer , im stunned by the consistant level of work that goes into your models , give yourself a pat on the back :)

on that note , how are te grey knight termienators coming along?

17-07-2007, 07:22
Hey ya'.

Tank is looking excellent, but IMO the arms holding the missile rack are kinda small to be supporting something that big. Not saying they aught to be monstrous, just that those look a bit tiny to me.

Also, loving the Palatine.

20-07-2007, 04:15
Exorcist done. I'm fairly happy with it. The freehand turned out ok and the mud worked out better this time than ever before which surprised me.

More shots:

21-07-2007, 16:46
Mmmm.... you;ve posted some great stuff while I've been away :)
The Seraphim in particular are stunning :D

21-07-2007, 17:13
Absolutely love the Seraphim, great idea to use a white smoke effect! You're a really talented painter, this is one of the best Sisters of Battle armies I've seen!

29-07-2007, 07:52
Thanks for the comments. I don't know about talent but I definantly practice all the time to improve my skill. If that sounds odd it's because I see talent as the sort of thing you either have or don't, and I think anyone can learn to paint minis as long as they practice.

Anyway enough of that and on to pictures. The retributors are done, and that means that the army is done. Some might notice that added up I only have about 1300 points. You may be asking; but Wayfarer, that isn't a complete army! And then you'd notice that that wasn't even a question, but you'd be right none-the-less. I still have some storm troopers to round out the list but 'technically' they are part of my deamonhunters army.

And here I said I was going to post pictures and I rambled on...

On an unrelated note, I went and checked out a cityfight tourny that was going on today and took a few pics of the armies. I just wish that I had an army ready so that I could have participated.

29-07-2007, 08:29
Love the scheme, and love your painting. Nice, it's neat, nice crisp painting , which is just awesome.

29-07-2007, 09:15
That whirlwind is awesome, I remember when you started it. Does the Launcher dismantle, I can see that getting smashed in transit...

29-07-2007, 10:36
That is one very impressive army Wayfarer; I can't wait to see the Stormtroopers :D

30-07-2007, 07:50
Thanks for the comments.

jasevx: The launcher is magnetic so I can remove it for transport. And rotate it for dramatic effect!

As for what's up next, right now I'm working on some minis that I own but have no use for. A unit of deamonettes and a warwalker are being put together/painted right now. I'm probably going to ebay them or sell them around here. After that I've got some DA marines and Samael to paint and sell off. I'm not sure if I should make a new thread in general projects or not.

Hopefully I'll be able to take a little time to finish converting up my DH force. As it is right now I have 7 GK, 2 GKT, 19 STs, a dread, and two chimeras which all need to be converted. No small task but I told myself that by the end of this year I'd have my WH, DH, and Menoth armies finished at the very least.

Also I want to thank everyone who's been viewing my log, even if you haven't commented, because knowing that people are interested in my work, not to mention actually liking it, really keeps me encouraged.

Also, I realized just now that my 100th post was of a completed army, which is an interesting coincidence.

05-08-2007, 05:47
Well I've finished the deamonette unit. They turned out rather well, though as usual the pictures are lacking. They aren't horrible but some of the subtler things are lost.

With this unit I tried some new techniques. I've always used glazes in the past, but usually never more than two at the most and only on certain areas such as robes. This time I glazed the majority of the mini, (skin, hair, and purple stuff) multiple times, and I liked the results. I had planned for the skin to be a lighter tone but as I worked on it and the glazes darkened and deepened the color I liked it so much I left it that way. The highlights are more subtle now though. Also these are the most elaborate bases I've done I think, using cork, miliput tiles, and some grass.

The highlights on the black are invisible in these pictures unfortunately, and I think that I didn't paint the gems as well as I should have.

I'd love to know what you all think of them. Also right now there is the warwalker that should be done in a few days as long as I don't get hit really hard by summer alergies like I did earlier this week.

05-08-2007, 06:01
They are sweet man

05-08-2007, 06:12
Great stuff mate!

05-08-2007, 11:35
Great colours; wonderfully different to anything I've seen before.
Superb work :D

06-08-2007, 13:37
Wayfarer YOU MUST tell me what colours you used to paint your rhino-type tanks, preeeety please? Cos i might do my Monolith when i get it like that

07-08-2007, 08:36
I'm glad you guys like these so much. I took some better pictures so you may notice that I edited the two pics of the groups of five.

Hallowed: The tanks use a color progression as follows: black, 1:3 black:deep green, deep green, 1:1 deep green:ivory

Sure enough my sinus' decided to kick my face in but I did get some things done. Expect a warwalker within the week and a sammael following shortly afterwards. I should probably make a new thread for all this random stuff.

07-08-2007, 09:27
Thanks for the scheme Wayfarer.

09-08-2007, 20:48
Brand new DSLR so I took a better picture of my light jacks because of all of my pics so far I think those had the worst.

I'm pretty excited about this camera.

As for progress, I'm working on two Grey Knights in between other things. Hopefully I'll have the rest of the GK and GKT converted by mid september if not sooner.

10-08-2007, 01:28
Always a treat to see an update from you Wayfarer

19-09-2007, 06:04
Alas I have not even come close to having the remaining GKs done by now, but work has picked up. Not that I'm mad about that because it's quite the contrary. Anyhow, I have finally finished the two Grey Knights I've been working on. These are the last of the action poses I think.

In the first picture you can see what else I'm working on. Since last I posted it the crusader has been stripped down and busted apart then reglued and now the basecoats are done. I've been playing warmachine lately and honestly I would rather have my menoth army painted up than finish my Daemon hunter army. I've lost a ton of my enthusiasm for my daemon hunters so it's hard for me to work on them. I'm tempted to start on my eldar before finishing the GK army because they are just so much work to convert and then paint while everything else is mostly paint.

Sorry about the lack of updates also, as I said earlier I've been pretty busy with other things (my general log thread for instance). I have the feeling that the updates to this thread will continue to be few and far between for a while. I really wish I had more time for these personal projects though.

What's bothering me is that I have some deadlines set for myself as far as getting my two remaining 40k armies and my warmachine army done, and I'm pretty far behind schedule. I started my Daemon hunters last november and I had planned to have them completely finished by now. Not just converted up but fully painted. Plus, I have a little side project that I want to do but I can't find the time to squeeze that in. I have seemed to contracted the "have way more stuff than I'll ever finish" syndrome that aflicts so many of us.

Anyway, I'm done yammering now but thanks for looking.

19-09-2007, 06:22
Those conversions are sweet. I can totally understand not having the time to work on minis though, so you're definitely not alone on that one.

19-09-2007, 10:15
Nice work, it sucks when you dont get time to work on your minis, i know too, hopefully when i get my holidays off work in a fortnight or so, i'll spend the whole week painting my Steel Legions.

19-09-2007, 10:26
I love those Grey Knight conversions Wayfarer, awesome Green Stuffing. The poses make them look like they're fighting in the way of some sort of dance, it's very cool!

19-09-2007, 13:10
Thos grey knights are great Wayfarer; really good work :)
