A discussion on another forum is spiraling out of control over whether the Escher Heavy Plasma Gun is a Heavy Plasma Gun or Plasma Gun.

I'd like to know what you think.
Here's the discussion;

The model is quite clearly a Plasmagun. It just got mislabelled in the past after some confusion with "Escher Heavy with Plasmagun" to "Escher with Heavy Plasmagun". Easily done I guess but kind of annoying.

To be honest, a Plasmagun is more useful IMHO. Cheaper, more available(Special not Heavy) and I rate Sustained Fire over Blast any day.

It's just the right size to call it whichever you want to pay the points for.

They all seemed to be comparing it to the 'new' enbiggened plasma gun (as used by the IG). They either forget (or aren't old enough to remember) in the past, HPGs were a lot smaller than they are now. They weren't much bigger than today's PG.

The necro campaign I was playing in always called it the HPG. We were playing it using the original minis and rules, though.

its labeled as heavy plasma, but its the same size as a marine plasma gun. compare it to the van sar heavy plasma gun.

sorry to drag this one from the depths :angel: , but as I now have access to a digital camera, he's some I converted earlier:
one on the left is the vansar heavy plasma gun, one on the right is the standard model.

If you look in the new Necromunda rules, Eschers don't have access to plasma guns, they do however have access to plasma pistols and heavy plasma guns.

So it's a heavy plasma gun ^_^

Actually, in the rules review, the house weapons list was updated so they have access to plasma guns *and* heavy plasma guns. So play it however you want. Just be sure to tell your opponent.

Actually, I'd compare it to the Space Marine Plasmaguns and Imperial Guard Plasmaguns which were available around the same time. The difference is that the Escher one has cables going to a backpack. Heavy Plasmaguns have always been large shoulder mounted weapons as I recall (until the Van Saar one which is still larger as shown previously by Angelwing).

Note the brackets used when describing the Escher Heavy Plasmagun in the attached picture.

I'll say it's designed to be a standard plasma gun, but it can easily be either.

in 40k you don't have a heavy plasma gun you only have plasma gun and plasma cannon so it's a heavy plasma gun because it needs extra power which comes from the backpack see simple really.

or maybe wishfull thinking, yes i do get to contradict myself whenever i feel like it:evilgrin:

At the time at which the Necromunda rules were written, 40K also had Heavy Plasma Guns. These were later renamed Plasma Cannons. (Circa 3rd Ed.)
