Prelude:
It was a Thursday afternoon. From his window, Vee could see bright blue sky and small, light clouds - but he knew what was really going on. The weather was lying.
He bundled himself up and grabbed his empty backpack. Saying farewell to his roommate, he stepped out into the void that is Canada.
Only a few days ago did he discover that a hobby store was but two blocks from his apartment. He had face-palmed when he realized the truth - he had been there since September.
"It's not too far away", he said to himself, "I will survive the journey".
He was optimistic, at the very least.
Vee instantly lost feeling in his face, and regretted never gaining any body-fat. Shivering, squinting into the wind, and probably experiencing a runny nose, Vee reached the store. He entered the fabled Dueling Grounds (http://www.dueling-grounds.com/). It seemed foreign, it looked large, no salesman jumped him at the door - this was not a Games Workshop.
As he defrosted, he found the shelves he was looking for, and slowly gathered up his purchases. Placing his credit card on the counter, and ordering more products, Vee stuffed his backpack and prepared for the second journey. He knew people of East Indian descent lacked a natural affinity for the cold. Praying to whichever gods were listening at the time, he began walking home. He repeated his mantra to himself so he might gain the will to survive - "There is tea and cookies at home... There is tea and cookies at home...".

The Log:
As soon as I thawed out I decided to start the project log today! This is also in character for me, as we all know how I love to bite off more than I can chew. ;)
After some consideration, I realized that I am not a Deadleyheadley, or a Captain_Wolverine. Rather, I am more like a FearFrost or a Schoolcormorant. So no single giant project threads for me, just some focused ones from time to time. Besides Mr. Frost's Infinity log and some others, it seems that there is not much non-GW content in this forum, so I thought I'd chip in. Like my relationship to most other things, I am a complete newbie at Warmachine.

I chose the Protectorate of Menoth (http://www.privateerpress.com/WARMACHINE/gallery/default.php?level=collection&id=7) because I love the look of the models, which seems to be an uncommon opinion. For the uninitiated, Menoth is a faction based on religious zealots with a deep affection for fire - so the easiest comparison would be Witch Hunters in 40k.

I'm going to be using this guide (http://www.brushthralls.com/Menoth_10Day/) as a basis for painting my models. Although I lack the audacity to believe I could do as much as the writer can in 10 days. I will most likely be doing bone coloured armour plates, purple trim, with gold and silver for weaponry.

So, why am I doing this? Well, I know I have other obligations, such as my Space Emos and Lizardmen, but these models are large enough to properly teach myself some more advanced techniques. Forces are made of relatively few models, and Privateer Press has Mike "I Want To Have Your Babies" McVey - as you can see, I'm a fan. Also, you folks get to watch a newbie tackle Warmachine, and maybe if I'm lucky it will broaden some horizons. Warmachine is also pretty much entirely metal, and I miss working with only metal. All of that, and I want to play like I have a pair, if you don't mind.

ok i'll bite, i quite like the look of this stuff, despite the indoctrination of 40k i like nicely painted miniatures so i'll watch this - not least for my mentionin the first post :p

i do hope the self styled 'warseer's slowest painter' doesn't give up

Yay, another non GW thread!

You do realize that I am going to camp this thread and howl everytime you post an update that lacks pics, right? :D

I HIGHLY suggest you take a good long look at that nice pile of stuff you bought, and put all of it except the books and one warjack or infantry squad in a box or your dresser, so you dont get overwhelmed with "holy crap thats a lot to paint" syndrome.

Paint like you've got a pair, Vee!

-666 HEATHEN! I mean -err- yeah! I'm pretty excited about these guys since I'm applying the same colour scheme to such a variety of miniatures, even though there are only 4 main factions, there's so much diversity in the models you use.

james:) Thanks, James. I'm probably not going to go all willy-nilly with the converting as I tend to do. I was thinking of sculpting some simple ornate pattern on the armour plates, since it's an excuse not to freehand it. Whoops, I didn't mean to use the f-word so soon in the log!

Haha! I promise, I'll be good this time, I swear! The only thing that particularly worries me about these Warjack models is the fact that I'll need to do the majority of the painting unassembled. I don't really see a way around it.

I just opened the starter box and was a bit overwhelmed! Even though I read what I was getting on the back of the box, it was such a weird feeling just seeing it all. The pieces were nicely packaged (Sorted too!), I got stat cards for everything in the box (Would you ever dream of GW giving you the rules for each model you buy?!), and a poster for Menoth with quick-start rules on the back!

The rulebook is pretty amazing too. Entries and rules for all the factions, lots of background, errata Q&A, and all 256 pages are full colour. I got the soft-back version, but it was easily half the price of one of GW's hard-bound rulebooks. I love it!

Get your pin vice ready, warjacks dont like to stay together otherwise, espesh those heavy-ass arms! ;)

Is there a gaming group at that shop that plays warmachine? I bet that would be good motivation to get your stuff painted up, gaming!

Yeah, Mr. Baby Drill is patiently waiting. Dueling Grounds has Warmachine/Hordes nights 3 to 5 times a month, I gather. There's also a 'Press Ganger', which I suppose it similar to GW's Outriders, so there is hope for me in this hobby. :)

Edit: Thanks, Khrangar. If this works itself out I will probably start another faction eventually, so I might convince you to play a game or two in the future. :)

Can I sugest that you sign up to PP's forum and enter the monthly painting challenge where you "vow" to piant things on your list.

This has actual been quite helpfull for me to set goals, not be distracted with other stuff, and make a half decent effort to complete what I start.

Hello again! I may be short on pictures, so no pretty stuff yet (am I ever the presumptuous one).

I've been sculpting details for the bases. The Protectorate of Menoth does not exactly have the amount of lush greenery that, say, those Cygnaran heathens enjoy. We gladly accept these trials Menoth has presented us with.

This is probably one of the longer ways to base miniatures. I fill the inside of the base with green stuff, let it cure for 15 minutes or so, and then with a scalpel I carve out cracked earth. This process forces surface to become uneven, so I dab a finger in some cooking oil (I'm using corn oil, I don't think it matters) and smooth out the base in circular motions. These bases are still shiny because I haven't washed of the oil yet. From here on the base is essentially done, I don't have to add sand at all. After priming white, I think some Desert Yellow over Bestial Brown or Snakebite Leather (left in the grooves) with slight Bleached Bone highlights will pull it all together. Any suggestions on that would be great to hear. :)

I've purchased some more stuff. So here's a rundown just like the opening post's:

And finally what will likely saved for last (for obvious reasons) 1x The Harbinger of Menoth (http://www.privateerpress.com/WARMACHINE/gallery/default.php?level=picture&id=177) (I love that she's way more over the top than St. Celestine.)

I've been diligently cleaning and pinning my models. Covering over the slots in the bases means that I will need to pin every model. For the more nimble Daughters of the Flame, some of which only touch the base with a single tiny foot, I'm a little unsure as to how I should proceed with them. Regardless of all of that, work has been slow due to the recent weeks of school stresses, and aggravatingly persistent medical conditions. I will struggle on.

You may find for the DoM that you need to put them in the base as normal, and then greenstuff your cracked earth. Which I think looks fantastic by the way. Looking forwards to seeing you stuff painted.

Bases are looking good. Good luck with basing all of your models that way. On a side note, I bought the alt version for Sorscha so I have officially started Warmachine.

Menoth?! GASP! I'm in shock and awe actually, I never get to see Menites these days. Look forward to your progress. Maybe you should cast those base tops so you coat in GS and press in to the mold to get the cracked earth effect?

@ Devolutionary - Casting actually isn't a bad idea, but I can do a base if I have 20 minutes or so to spare, right now I can do 2 bases in 25 minutes. If I were to set up a production line of sorts, I would probably be able to do as many as I need at the time within an hour and a half.
