Well, everybody else is starting Project Logs so why can't I?

I am about to start a new DA Successor Army. Part of the inspiration has come from the Brotherhood of Steel in the Fallout games. The models won't look like the game characters but some of my army background will.

I would like to go to the 40k GT this year so I'm going to start chronicling my progress in an attempt to actually finish an army for once...

As a GT army, the initial force will be 1500pts but I plan on collecting 2000pts so I can convert a really cool Land Raider Crusader.

Anyway, waffle later, pics now!

This model is the Sergeant in my Terminator Command Squad. He is the first model I painted for the army and I have a fair idea of the colour scheme now. Sorry for bad pics, will try to get some better ones at some point.

I haven't painted the Chapter Badge yet but it will be a simplified version of this:

Fallout being basically the best thing there is, I'll be following this. :) Now we just have to make some Enclaves to fight them...

If there was a way to make those Mk.II armour helmets, at least for a character or too, its would be perfect... to bad I have no good ideas how to pull it off.

Also, looking carefully, the helmet actually looks more eldar than SM. Hmm...

konrad
16-02-2007, 08:47
liking it. Will be waiting a while for the next one tho as i know how long it'll take you topaint a model

Catferret
16-02-2007, 08:57
For all the Fallout fans out there, I also play Inquisitor and have plans for a Power Armoured Inquisitor at some point in the future. Gonna need a lot of GS though!

And Konrad is right, I'm pretty much one model a day at my fastest painting speed... Good job I'm doing a Deathwing equivalent army.

Edzard
16-02-2007, 09:45
Gonna make him look like a brotherhood/enclave power armor dude? :D

Catferret
16-02-2007, 09:49
Played Fallout Tactics? He will hopefully look like one of the Paladins in Power Armour from that.

EDIT: If I get some camera batteries I will post a few more pics of Terminators tonight. I'm sure I can get a couple finished.

Catferret
16-02-2007, 20:20
Update sans pics. Finished 2 more Termies as predicted but lacking battery for camera to take photos! Honest, they're done!

Quin 242

So they are Black and silver? The pics SEEM that way but some parts look white (chest particularly).

Nicely painted but looks like the black could use just a little highlighting? The Face is very nice!

Looking forward to seeing more.

Catferret
16-02-2007, 21:30
The pics are bad. There is actually a fair bit of highlighting on the silver and black... The chest eagle and Crux are all in bone worked up from scorched brown. Hopefully the next lot of pics will be better.

I liked the work on the face too. I will try to show a better pic of it.

17-02-2007, 03:05
I tried but camera battery totally dead! :cries: I'm afraid you will have to wait until tomorrow.

Just to let folks know that there will mainly be Termie pics for the first few posts until the Ravenwing Battleforce is released. :D I may occasionally break up the tedium with pics of my Necro models or WIP Witch Hunter Inquisitor I am working on.

Yay! Have batteries in camera again!

Have a few pics for your perusal. Again, sorry for poor quality. No daylight left by the time I took them.

First up we have two of my Close Combat Terminators who will be in my Command Squad.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/BOSTer2.jpg

And here is a WIP shot of Commander Maxson. He is based on Lysander and has had some detail filed off to be resculpted, His leg is too dark to see what I've done unfortunately. The chest plate will be getting his personal Heraldry (when I work out what that is...).
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/BOSMaxsonWIP1.jpg

Anyway, I promise I will try and take better photos next time! C&C please! :D

Call the brotherhood emo and watch as you get shot....that should be an option in Fallout 3
'So you guys are technological emos?'
*sounds of shotgun blasts*

Nice stuff you have.

scrubout
18-02-2007, 00:15
Might I offer a suggestion...if they're DA successors will they have those wierd little-serf like guys in robes?

If so, might I suggest painting one in purple ala the Monty Python and the Holy Grail bridge scene reference from Fallout 2? Always answer questions with questions!

Cat, can I ask where you're getting the mini-cloak on the front of each model from? I checked all the veteran sprues I could find and couldn't see it :/

The three painted models have Skaven Night Runner cloaks. The big boss man Maxson has a nifty green stuff original. Some of his other Terminators have High Elf Archer cloaks.

Catferret
18-02-2007, 01:59
OK, a few questions to answer!

1. I'm not emo, Rod Hull has never had his hand anywhere near my @$$! Oh, wait that's Emu...

2. The little robey things are Skaven and High Elf cloaks as Katinka said. Except Maxson's which is sculpted.

3. Little Purple Bridge Keeper shall be accompanying my Standard Bearer to carry his Stormbolter. He has his hands full carrying a Standard! Just gotta wait for the watcher in the Dark model to be rereleased! He is off sale just now until Azrael is rereleased. Damn...

Melchiah

Self harm. . . with a chainsaw! Genius!

Catferet: If you can be bothered with scultpage, just use any short model (or even a wire armature). LotR Hobbits would work well, if it weren't for the license issue.

And just for randomness, here is my Imperial Guard Heroic Officer. Nicknamed Captain Donnie Murdo. Any Scottish people may get the Gaelic cartoon reference!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/DonnieMurdo.jpg

HMDave, sculpting is never a concern for me. I'm keeping GW in business on GS sales alone!

EDIT: Look! A model I own that isn't blue and silver! Suck on that Weregerbil! :p

highmarshaldave
18-02-2007, 11:15
I know the feeling. My mate wants his whole DA army robed; but since he got the army box he has ten unrobed models. . . guess who pulled that task.

Dave out.

Catferret
18-02-2007, 11:20
I have to add robes to all the bikers and Landspeeder crew I intend to use... :cries: I decided that any Power armoured model in the army will be robed. Didn't think about that while working out the army list and including Ravenwing. Poop.

Speeder crew shouldn't be too bad, just a little GS. Bikers will take more work. Or I could buy a heap of RW sprues... Better start playing the lottery so I can afford that!

Arkzein
18-02-2007, 14:17
Here I was expecting a Necromunda log... ;)

Brilliant faces on those guys, and the rest looks pretty good as judged by the dark pictures (And even with great pictures metalics don't photgraph well usually anyway). Love the commander so far, looking suitably heroic and grumpy. ;)

highmarshaldave
18-02-2007, 14:22
Well mate, I could get you a deal since my DA playing mate probably won't be using the Ravenwing so may have one or two spare biker bodies and other ravenwingy bits. Maybe. . .

the reference is that it is Gaelic for Danger Mouse. Or loosely translated

wow. excellent faces!

Catferret
18-02-2007, 18:56
Wow! Go to the pub for an afternoon and people bombard you with questions! Where to start?

Simto, the Sgt's head is just a plain old Assault Termie Sgt head! Nowt fancy.

HMDave, robed bodies would be greatly appreciated when I get some money in...

Destris, no lubricant, just plain water and keeping fingers out of the way!

To all, the Donnie Murdo thing is a reference to Danger Mouse. An old British cartoon. He was dressed in white and had an eye patch. The Gaelic version of the show was called Donnie Murdo because Danger Mouse didn't have a decent translation so a name with the initials DM was used. I'm full of useless information... :p

P.S. Just for the record, I'm so not emo! I think you'll find I'm still trapped in 90s Grunge. I'll catch up with the real world eventually... :D

Arkzein
18-02-2007, 19:08
My word Penfold what a way to name a mini! We just laughed at the cartoons in Irish back home I have to admit. Do you put on a David Jason accent when issuing commands then? (ah wait wouldn't work with the translation). Give him a moustache though and he looks rather similar...

Always a bit of craic having a story behind a mini. :)

Two ideas being stolen as he's combining it with my idea to have a Watcher carrying my Standard Bearer's Storm Bolter. I can't complain though, I told him it was my solution to the Powerfist/Storm Bolter/Company Standard-only-two-hands problem. Hopefully the models wont look too similar.

Weregerbil/Karnesdorff: Buy me a lifetime supply of camera batteries and I'll take tonnes of pics! I dunno what Konrad does to them but the camera is dead again! And these ones were Duracell! I also found our Resiquest models last night. Gonna have to take pics when I get batteries. Get a move on with the Resi rules Weregerbil! I deliberately used the Powerfist with Laurel Wreath to tie into the usual Space Marine Standard Bearers all having the Wreath shoulder pad. The arm holding the pole is the Sergeant Thunder Hammer arm.

Any thoughts people?

Oh boy I like this. I love Terminators and yours look awesome! Good sculpting, too!

One tiny detail, though: how will the Apothecary treat injured Marines with paired Lightning Claws? Make sure their suffering doesn't last?

Next you'll be equiping your Apothecaies with bombs to extact the geneseed.

Lyinar
19-02-2007, 22:32
Well, it could be that the claws are, in fact, retractable.

Hmmm... You've given me an idea for the Standard Bearer in my army, Catferret. I may end up leaving my poor little one-armed
DIY Terminator Sergeant alone and using the arm from the "winged" Thunder Hammer to do the Standard, especially since I'm thinking about using one of the more dynamic arms for my Shield-Bearer's weapon (take a look at my as-yet embryonic Project Log (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70193), if you don't mind).

Catferret
20-02-2007, 08:28
Glad to have given you ideas Lyinar. I shall check your log as soon as I have posted todays offerings.

And here they are!

This is entirely random but I've been in a bit of a zombie phase at the moment so here is my Character model from Resiquest, a game created by Palatine Katinka using the WHQuest rules for Resident Evil.

How did the game turned out? It sounds like a mix between Space Hulk and Warhammer Quest: really sweet. :)

Catferret
20-02-2007, 09:14
Pretty much as you described it! Lots of running down corridors wishing we had bigger guns! The last thing you need is a random encounter of a Tyrant when you only have Handgun ammo left!

lilljonas
20-02-2007, 09:19
Cool. What minis did you use for the zombie horde? You had zombie dogs and everything?

Catferret
20-02-2007, 09:28
Mordheim has a zombie dog model! Yay! Palatine Katinka also made Hunters out of the old Genestealer models and a lot of GS. Rats, bats, spiders and zombies were easy to get hold of. Tyrants and stuff were just represented with trolls. We were playtesting a lot of rules changes so didn't have time to work on the really big stuff. Maybe we will in the future.

lilljonas
20-02-2007, 10:18
Oooh, do a Nemesis scenario! It would probably rock and be extremely frustrating at the same time. :)

Staaars....

Catferret
20-02-2007, 10:25
We never got to high enough level to meet a Nemesis thankfully.

Really gotta make one now though... Maybe it will appear here at some point.

lilljonas
20-02-2007, 10:28
Well, that would be the point of the scenario, to get the players to constantly flee and hopefully get off the board/reach an extraction point before they get their heads blown up. Could create a fast-paced game where you can't keep it slow, since you are always hunted. The difficult part would be to balance it so the nemesis still is threatening enough to keep them moving without it just killing them outright at the smallest misshap, creating a dull game.

Catferret
20-02-2007, 12:38
After a request for Chapter Background, I have realised my log is sorely lacking in this respect.

The Brotherhood of Steel are a DA Successor Chapter created to catalogue all the rare equipment the Unforgiven discover. They are currently heavily involved in researching Armour Technology to make Terminator Armour more available to Marines.

They are also studying Plasma Technology and trying to rediscover the lost data to better maintain the containment field. Too many valuable warriors have been lost to misfires. Hopefully one day they will discover a way to integrate plasma weapons with Terminator Armour such as the Plasma Blaster wielded by Captain Agemman of the 1st Company of the Ultramarines.

Their overriding goal is to search for STC data files that may have fallen into the hands of the Fallen or Chaos. These files are wasted in the hands of heretics and those in the possession of the Fallen are most valuable.

Palatine Katinka
21-02-2007, 01:49
Palatine Katinka also made Hunters out of the old Genestealer models and a lot of GS.

Slight exageration there. I half-made one (never finished texturing it, let alone paint it!) but that was enough to fuel the imagination enough that the genestealers with only two arms were recognised as representing Hunters and the rarer Sweepers. I also started converting Chimera/mesh-monkeys from Hormagaunts and zombies. Ironically, I came up with the idea to mod Warhammer Quest because I wanted to make the characters from the games and play as them on a table top with my mates but I'm the one that ended up running it and never had my own character! :cries:

I just noticed that you used the Sgt. Thunder Hammer arm for the Standard Bearer. I was going to do that! We'll have to stop stealing each others good ideas or our armies will end up awfully similar! (For those who don't know, I'm Catferret's flat-mate and I'm also collecting a Deathwing army. Mine will be actual Deathwing though. Chaplin Davius, if we ever get the stuff on to one PDF file then I'll send them but until then it would take a ton of emails! I don't really have the time at the moment i'm afraid.

Back on topic! I didn't finish painting my Terminator today but did get a chance to photograph one of my better painted models. It graces the display cabinet of GW Edinburgh and I am very happy with the overall look of it.

Behold Skarsnik and Gobbla!

Looks damned good, even when the photograph seems to be washing out some of the details. Seems to have a nice gloss/satin effect on the toungue as well? All my years in Edinburgh and I've not set foot in the GW somehow (Online bits orders are easier I guess) so can't admit to ever having seen it in the flesh. I think I'm a few editions of the Chaos Codex behind so might have a peak if and when I drop in for it. (It's on the Royal Mile I think?)

Seems to squig is sporting a mold line though, I know how frustrating that can be, missing one and only noticing after priming and painting some of the model. (There are two small areas with the renmants of one on my most recent model and the only thing stopping me stripping it is that it was just a test mini).

This log moves too fast for me to keep up, tons of new posts! *laughs* ;)

Gobbla looks pretty good, and you can barely see the mold line (had to do a double take myself)

The zits on Gobbla's tongue look really painful...evidence of a splendid paint job! I also like Skarsnik's moon shaped weapon, the metal scratches on the yellow make it come alive.

The only things with Skarsnik and Gobbla that prevents it from being a top-ten:er or top-three:er in the local painting competition is the yellow crescent blade, the snotling's mushrom and Gobbla's scales. The mushroom could be light, dark or yellowish brown or even purpllish.

How did you do the silver (I'd wait until you're sober until you answer this)

Black undercoat. 75/25 Boltgun Metal/water painted carefully on to each individual panel, leaving black lining. Then 75/25 Mithril Silver/water highlights. Takes a while but gives nice shiny plate armour. Works fine for basic models.

For character models there are a lot more stages. Mithril is gradually added to Boltgun and the highlights are built up real slowly.

Hope that helps.

p.s. Sober now!

Good luck on your land speeder! The resident evil model is great, so I'm sure it'll turn out well along with your other marines. I suppose that the new Ravenwing sprue with a winged, hooded jawless skull will be of use for you along with the Adeptus Mechanicus-related shoulder pad with a hooded skull? ;)

OK, have just finished undercoating all the other models I had for the army!

My Commander, half a Command Squad, 2 Terminator Squads, and a Landspeeder Tornado.

The Speeder crew have sculpted robes but it really wasn't that difficult because there isn't much of them visible when the Speeder is assembled.

I promise I will post more pics of stuff soon!

P.S. This goes out to all the people who complain about Chaos Black Spray. It works great. I just used it in cold temperatures and had no coverage issues at all. And that was on 15 Termies and a Speeder! Just saying... :D

Started the Landspeeder today! The Heavy Bolter is done and only took an hour. It even has numbers on the ammo counter... I will try to get the rest of it basecoated tomorrow before my game against Konrad at GW Vets Night. 1250 point game. I'll have 22 models... :cries:

Well, I've been working on my Landspeeder. Still! Trying some crazy painting shenanigans on it. There are a lot of silver areas so I'm trying to make it look like there are reflections and stuff on it to break up the flat areas. It looks kinda weird at the moment though. It needs more random squiggles I reckon! :D Have a lot of the details still to do but the crew are finished aside from chapter badges.

May have pics for you all tomorrow.

You realize the stupid pointy thing on the front of the Land Speeder actually does have a purpose, don't you? It's called a pitot tube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitot_tube), and it's used to determine the vehicle's airspeed.

I was actually impressed that Games Workshop actually put one on the model the first time I looked at a picture of a Land Speeder, which is why I mention it.

EDIT: BTW, Catferret... Any comments on my DA's? They got put in Sci-Fi.

And on a side note related to the official topic of the Sci-Fi Project Logs forum, is ANYONE going to build the giant, talking, gun-vomiting, stone head from Zardoz? It might make an interesting Idol of Gork (or is it Mork?).

Nah, I don't need a weird looking widget to measure air speed! If the pilots eyes start to sting then he's going too fast! As long as he keeps firing that Assault Cannon I'll be happy.

Played a couple of games the other night. Cyclone Launchers are so underrated! The amount of firepower they can kick out when combined with a Stormbolter is great! And so much cheaper than an Assault Cannon. :D

As it turns out, my fancy colour themed dice (Blue/Silver) are cursed! So many 1's! :cries: maybe I will have to get more models painted to improve dice karma! :D

The thing about the RW sprues is I only want the robed bodies and plastic Typhoon Launcher. A couple of Assault Cannons will be getting kept aside for a Crusader conversion I have planned. I'm mainly getting the Battleforce for the saving on the Bikes and Speeder.

Konrad has already claimed some of the other bits for his forthcoming Raptor's bikers. If any other Edinburgers want anything in trade for robed bodies, find me in GW or PM me.

Its a strange flat we live in. Konrad has a habit of letting batteries fall from his person at random, leaving them on the floor. I've explained to Catferret that some of these batteries do contain some charge and can be used to power the "dead" camera as long as you don't want to take too many pics at once and don't leave the batteries in when not in use.

I took two pics of work-in-progress bikes because they were left on the couch and then Catferret complained and got me to take a picture of one with the greenstuff work done. Here's the pics of the bikes:

To be contructive thinking the guns need something though, a pipe/tube, or bit of a frame on the top, or a targeter etc., some little detail to stop them looking just stuck on the side. Drum magazine looks perfect though, really suits them when not hand held.

Oh and no worries about the guns, but make sure the mold line on that wheel disappears, must be one of the most overlooked, see it all the time. *Grumbles*

Have you thought about using two 40mm circular bases for the bikes? You can get a nice '8' going. Alternatively you can start with an '8' then fill in the sides to get an '0' shape for the base: wider than the horse bases and with nice curved corners.

I'm obsessed with bases.

Sick!

The freehand Brotherhood of Steel symbol just gave me a huge nerdgasm!

Yea, you gave me a nerdgasm Catferret, I bet you feel real stud-like.

The blue bolter is nice too, you don't see many bolters in such pleasing alternative colors as that.

Greatly impressed with that symbol.

Shouldn't you be in the science fiction area...:eyebrows: ?

I guess the Resident Evil stuff counts as "Real World" enough to move it out of Sci-Fi... :wtf:

I have to admit that I looked in the Sci-Fi Project Logs forum for this first when the old PL got split and wondered where the hell it was.

Very nice freehand BoS badge, BTW.

EDIT: Are you going to model your commander after R. Lee Ermey? (Fallout: Tactics joke for those who don't get it :p)

Catferret
17-03-2007, 05:05
Lyinar, sadly my commander is based on Lysander. No Full Metal Jacket reference. Sorry!
His name (Maxson) comes from the first Fallout game though.

I really need to get my @$$ moving with this project. I am way behind. I need to get 2 squads complete before I start my commander but I still have abasic Termie plus Standard and Apothecary to do. On the plus side, I will be able to get the time off work in October to actually attend the GT...

Lyinar

Well, in Fallout Tactics, you control a squad of Brotherhood soldiers, and the general you get your missions from in the beginning is voiced by R. Lee Ermey.

Is the bolter purple or blue?

Catferret
19-03-2007, 16:33
Weapon casings are all a really dark blue. The light caught the model funny. Unfortunately I can't take a photograph of the finished model because it is now at GW Edinburgh. The highlighting on the armour is far better on the final version.

Thanks Ak. :)

Wish I had more time to paint stuff these days. My new job is keeping me on crazy hours and I don't have the time to do much these days. I will try and get something done to update with by next Wednesday or Thursday.

On a happier note, this new job pays well enough that I can branch out into other stuff. I have finally succumbed to Warmachine and have a Caster ready to be undercoated and a few Jacks on order.

I haven't painted much recently. Got a basic Termie done the other day but really substandard work for me. Still haven't adjusted to the new working hours so not got any other stuff done. My goal is to get an Aragorn model finished by Saturday for an instore GW painting competition. Tis LotR day. And if I finish him I'll get Victoria Haley (Cygnar Warcaster) done too.

Gonna start taking my painting stuff into work. it's a really quiet bar.

Then I'll go back to painting more Termies. Plus Ravenwing stuff. And Warmachine models when they arrive. And in the distant future a fully converted Landraider Crusader... Watch this space!

That is also one funky norseman, very staunch.

Catferret

Cheers Boyz and Dev. I'm a big fan of darker colour schemes. I'm frankly amazed that I didn't paint Haley with silver armour and blue cloth... :D

And finally, squad pics of my first two Terminator Squads. ...

Hmm, 2 possibilities:
1) you posed some of those termies blatantly the same
2) you are a cheat and are making us believe that you have painted more than you actually did ;)

(check out the sergeant in both squads: exactly the same except the arms... could these be magnetized perhaps?... and check out (from left to right) the first termie in the first squad and the second termie in the second squad...)

If I am mistaken, sorry Catferret... but if not, I think I deserve a cookie for noticing that

Are you using them on Tuesday/Wednesday at all?

Catferret
03-04-2007, 02:40
Steel_Legion: All cocktail stick work I'm afraid. It really doesn't take that long to do each section though. The real trick is to only work on one area at a time. Avoid putting dirty great thumb prints on it!

Ravik: Chapter badges will appear once I've finished squad 1. Unfortunately I can't use the army at GW because it isn't all painted or at least undercoated. The force composition I have chosen requires the use of Ravenwing and they are still WIP. Need more robes sculpting.

I'm only free for Wednesdays once a fortnight due to work. On the nights I have free Necromunda (and soon Mordheim) call to me.
