View Full Version : Burn the Witch - An Empire Log

Back in high school I started to make my second Empire army, having sold the first one. I was sitting in history class when the teacher mentioned something about burning witches, and I thought it'd be a great theme for an army, witch hunters that is. I perused the internet for various sources of information and found a couple that were to my liking, namely names of historically known witch hunters that I could use for my characters.

Flash forward almost 4 years later, the new Empire army book comes out and my good old religiously zealous and crazed nutjobs are still unfinished. Having finished my Sons of Guilliman, I thought "what better reason to finish them than having just completed another army?"

As you may or may not have seen, I have done some work on them before this log, namely my Witch Hunter General, who is still debating whether or not to put on his hat.

Here is what I have completed thus far:

3 of my heroes

To do I have:

15 Flagellants - in various stages of painting
10 Crossbowmen - need to buy/convert/paint
5 Pistoliers - need to buy/convert/paint
1 General - finish converting/start painting

Hope to have some updates soon,

I like the scheme - all browns and earthy colours yet somehow noble-looking rather than just dirty. I especially like the shields - that sort of stylised highlight works really well with the simplicity of the shields.

Also, love the girl and her dog!

Thanks for that, she's the unofficial unit champion. Unofficial because detachments can't have commands.

Very good, I like the muted colour scheme and I bet it looks good when all put together, is there any chance we could see a single shot of the army as it stands at the moment?

Also I like the flagstone bases but I think they could do with a little contrast, maybe a slightly darker grey wash or something?

I intend to repaint all the flagstone bases so that they're Shadow Grey with Codex Grey tiles. I'll get a full army shot tomorrow.

Not really an update but I thought I'd show you what I am using for bases, before they're painted.

Cool! I like them.
I'm actually planning on doing a witch hunter army too as a side project.

This army is wonderful, wonderful and purely wonderful. The mere execution so far of the idea shows it. I hope there'll be an update soon, since the groups you've done so far are astounding.

Very nice, and very effective. I particularly like the Knights.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope to have an army shot done during the weekend sometime, which is when I'll begin working on them again and I hopefully feel better. I have to paint a unit of flagellants and a bsb before I buy any new stuff.

Not much of an update, but at least it's something. I found the other unit of flagellants that I will be using for my army. I still need to go and buy 2 more but that will be done shortly.

Here is the unit:

Got a bit more done tonight. I finished the General's base and horse.

Here is the result.

dude great job!! I like what I see. As someone said earlier you did a great job with the browns and darker colors, but still made them look noble.

The Bret modles really fit the theme well! good job. I was making a "dark ages" themed bret army, and it looks kinda similar. I used torches from the 40k witch hunters model line, and they really looked good.

awesome job.

This is a really lovely army - nicely themed and with that theme well-carried throughout.

I think you need some sort of Steam Tank - perhaps a scratch-built counts-as thing; a sort of mobile Witch Barbeque or something like that. It would look great on the flagstone bases.

I really like this army. The colors are superb!

Thanks everyone.

@Darknight: I don't think I'll do a Steam Tank as I much prefer infantry to big things. I may do an War Altar at some point but that won't be until 3000pts, if I reach that.

i love your palette!

great job on your cavalry units! and your latest pic (general's mount) shows a vast improvement in your skills!

one little detail that i think could be improved on is the base. is this final already? i think it'll look better if you highlight it some more or give it a coat of ink to shade the grout(?).

awesome army so far!!!

Great horsie! I like how you use so much brown ^^ Oh and I like the crooked cannon loader too :)

I do however think that the bases look too flat. Try shading or highlighting the stones.

Sorry, no updates as Uni's been hectic with all the essays and exams and whatnot.

I do have big plans for this army over the summer, however. I can't really do the rest of the army in small chunks as I need bitz from various boxes to make everything. So one big purchase and the army should be done, followed by a bitz order.

@Saulot and Anardakil: I'll highlight the stonework on the bases once I've finished the army off, probably a highlight of Fortress Grey around some of the edges of the stones should do it, but right now it seems really daunting.
