No need for both a Mars and a Dictator in a 1500 point list. I recommend a swap from Dictator to Dominator class cruiser.

When you go up to 2000 points you should get an Emperor class Battleship.

Alternatively you could cut out the Mars & Dominator from the 1500 point list and add the Emperor. Saves you some points with which you can add more escorts ~Swords or so.

I find that the IN battleships aren't really worth it. Also I prefer the Overlord to the Mars - however I do field 2 Dictators in 1500-2000 pts.

Oh no! The Overlord is seriously flawed compared to the much better Mars BC. And it is generally seen that the Emperor is one of the best Battleships in the whole BFG game.

Consider getting an Emperor battleship for 1500 pt games as it is a great fleet support ship.

Amount of AC is really a matter of preference from player to player.

Generally I find the Mars to be the most impressive BC for IN but the others have their uses. Overlords are capable of harassing Eldar at longer ranges and the relative frailty of Eldar ships means the few shots that get sent their way are still of some concern. The Armageddon is one of the best gunships the Imperials have and I have played several matches against an IN bud of mine whose Armageddon (which he acquires using reserve rules), accounted rather well for itself against the Chaos fleet I fielded against him. But generally, the Mars is the most versatile and deadly BC around.

Isn't taking just 4 launch bays in a 1500 point list a little dangerous?

Only against the dreaded Tau Explorer lists. Remember, the IN has a lot of torps to keep the enemy fighters busy.

And, I prefer guns over ordnance. Nonetheless I started a Tau CPF fleet because of the models!

The Dictator is always a good choice, imo. I like having a fighter screen on hand to fend off enemy craft and ords, and the gun loadout is pretty good to.

My personal reccomendation is this- prows to the enemy at all times, until you think you can cripple with a broadside and take little return fire.
This has always seen me right in the past.
