View Full Version : Yet another Marienberg Warband (help with the mercs?)

So i've been playing around with a Marienberg warband for my first Mordheim campaign (see my last thread here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70912)) and I've settled on this as my starting warband;

Mercenary Captain @ 123 GC
Brace of Duelling Pistols; Mace; Sword

Champion w. Mace; Sword @ 48 GC

Champion w. Mace; Sword @ 48 GC

Youngblood w. club @ 18 GC

Youngblood w club @ 18 GC

2 Marksmen w. bow @ 70 GC

1 Marksman w. bow @ 35 GC

1 Marksmen w. Crossbow @ 50 GC

2 Swordsmen w. Sword @ 90

2 Warriors w. Clubs @ 56

Elf Ranger @ 40 GC

Total: 596 GC


With the exception of my Captain I've gone for quantity over quality, with the intention of boosting my numbers early on in the campaign and then decking them out with some more decent gear. I've also gone for small starting groups of henchmen, mainly to improve my chances of one of them being promoted to a hero (because that's what people seem to suggest doing on this forum). :D

Right now I'm still pondering as to what mercenary to take, specifically between the Elf Ranger or the Tilean Marksman. Both are very decent at shooting things and while the Elf Ranger will help me find stuff better post-game, I'm a little concerned about his upkeep - especially early on in the campaign where I'm hoping to bump my warband up to the 15 model limit (cookbooks and the like aside) and start decking them out with extra gear.
There's also the possibility of taking a Bard or Arabian Merchant, but I figured that they'd be better left until later.

Any suggestions/help would be great.

I move taking the merchant. He pays for his own upkeep pretty much all the time, especially if you are playing the multiplayer scenarios.

Also, the items he has access to are just fantastic. Mmmmm, flying carpets.

If you are lucky then your group is not using the patched genie-lamp. Man, that thing is so broken. Get this - when you rub the lamp and make a wish, one of the valid wishes you are allowed to make is to wish for another lamp! :D. Yeah, that got patched real hard real fast in my circle.

Oddly enough though it was *allowed* in the local store campaign and they wouldn't listen when I said it was a bad idea. Still, they changed their minds when I broke it over my knee like dry kindling. I got one at the earliest opportunity and then set a youngblood to lamp-polishing duty.

I would drop the elf and give your guys another h2h weapon, thats what i would do.

Basically I dropped a Marksman with a Bow and downgraded the Elf to a Tilean Marksman (His relative cheapness and the S4 crossbow was the main reason), and in exchange got pistols for my champions and swords for my youngbloods, both of which should improve them quite nicely.

After checking out his rules, I totally agree on the Arabian Merchant, but for now I figured I'd go for the increased killing power of the Tilean and get myself a merchant later on, once I'm confident that my Marienbergers can hold their own in a fight.

BTW, where can I find the rules for the Lamp/Magic Carpet? I've taken a look around the specialist games site but I haven't found anything on them.

Interesting, but where does it say that you can wish for another lamp? From my reading of it you basically roll on the 'light' table and 'dark' table, that being the result of your wish?

How's my latest warband? Anything particularly wrong with it or will it be able to pack some kind of punch?

Yes, that is exactly right. Roll five on the light table: Choose an item from the equipment list.

I suppose you could choose a rope and hook or a lantern or something, but another lamp is probably the better option. You could try wishing for a hunting rifle or some gromril armour, but neither of those are on the equipment list - they are on the weapon and armour lists respectively.

Lord 0, you're misreading something.

There's your Equipment list (Which is the list of gear you can take, and it's in your warband list.)

Then there's the "Miscellaneous Equipment" chart. Not the same thing.

Unless they start with the Lamp on their list, I'd say hells no!
