View Full Version : Rogue Trader Fleets

I was recently chatting with one of my friends, who has a Chaos Fleet, and he had the idea to slightly modify some of the Chaos ships, and make them look...well....less chaosy, and make a RT fleet, with the concept that the Trader had been scrapping together a fleet of older Imperial Vessels made my salvaging hulks he's found in his travels and re-fitting them.

My question is, is using a Chaos Fleet, combined with a RT Crusier and calling it the flagship, and just modelling the rest of the fleet the best way to go about this, are there rules for this sort of thing (i've already read the RT suppliment) or can we create something new and novel here?

I've already searched the forum, and the caveat seemed to be "Rogue Trader Fleets Never Get That Big" but i'd like to hear your opinions.

You could look to the Wolf Pack (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/WolfPacks.pdf) fleet rules for inspiration. They're for pirate fleets, but a Rogue Trader would probably be surrounded by the same type of ships - escorts, armed cargo ships, and the like.

Certainly an interesting starting place. I read over the rules, and it seems sound in principle, but doesn't include any of the larger ships. I know it's not "fluffy" for a Rogue Trader to have....say a bevy murder class crusiers (and a Battleship is right out) but I imagine if we put our brains together there must be a way to work it out.

What about a lost fleet?

Time flows strangely in the warp, and although generally it shortens travel in real-time by a lot (allowing interstellar travel), it has been known for fleets to arrive at their destination before they left, or arriving a century late even though in both instances only a few day may have passed in ship-time.

This and a lot more info on Warp travel-time was printed a long while back in the old Space Fleet game; makes for great fluff reading if you can find the old WDs with the articles, or the old game rules.

Anyway, my point is that you could use a Chaos fleet list and have the background be that it is a fleet that was presumed lost by the Imperials. To make it really fit though, you'd have to restrict yourself by not using the Chaos Marks and probably losing the +1 boarding bonus too. Other than that, you should be able to use the lists and ships as-is.

The main thing with a fleet like this is to give it the finishes that make a fleet "Imperial". This (http://fwesner.tripod.com/gallery/bfg-imp/vbb/vbb.html) and this (http://fwesner.tripod.com/gallery/bfg-imp/vbb/vbb2.html) should give you a better idea of what I mean about making the Chaos ships more "Imperial" ;).

Anyway, hope to see pix of whatever you end up doing!
