Well first off not sure on the name, but dyann means Guardian and Erath means purple.... so.....without further a do here is my colour sceme:

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/Smokedog_pics/colourscheme.jpg

I am going for a Tyranid type colur base of purple and green, with blue decals...
Quite dark, I know, but the dark colour will be highlighted, so it should be so dark in the end.

The decals which are blue will be very few, but the weapons will definalte be blue.

This week I am working on the aspects so ideas for slight tweaks for each aspect, (ie Red helmets for banshees fire dragons) is welcomed!! Another colour that will be used (as a base) for the vehicles is black...

Pictures to follow tommorow.

I have dcided that all weapons need to be in light blue to keep the squad together..

If i had started with new guardians they would look like the scorpions only with slightlly less green (only on helmet and shouldpads)

Looks good so far mate. I especially like the support platform.
So am I right in thinking that the main colour for the aspects will be purple with what ever colour is associated with their shrine? Ie; Blue Dire Avengers, black for Dark Reapers, Red for Fire Dragons, etc.
Tough call on the Dire Avengers colour scheme though as they both look good. :)

Well, as a color scheme it looks pretty solid, if a bit darker looking than average.
The best advice I could give you is google a bit on the internet and you will find a whole set of nice painting tips I benefited from very much!
Here are a couple of hard and fast suggestion. The first is to thin your paints with an acrylic thinner, or medium, or whatever it's called, instead of water. My results greatly improved after I started doing that! I use a thinner from an Italian company called Lifecolor, but I'm not sure if it's marketed around the world... as a matter of fact this specific product it's most often used to clean brushes and aerographs, but it thins color in a fantastic way, and also it dries a bit more slowly without going clammy. But, as a matter of fact any thinner is mostly the same since it is distilled water and some flow improving agent.
Second advice: try basecoating your minis as usual, highlight them with a very very light color exactly like you do, and finally thin very much a color a bit darker than the highlight, up to the point it will look like an ink or wash, then use it to blend the highlight where it meets the base color. This works very well with the sharp edges like the Eldars' armour plates and somesuch.
For a round, smoother surface like an Aspect Warrior's helmet, you have to add thinned, ever lighter, ever smaller layers until you are satisfied!
Hope I've been of some help.

I think you should tie the green and purple into each of the aspects. It will unify the army.

So your howling banshee has green details, I would make the weapons and loincloth purple. Similarly, the Dark Reaper needs some green.

So give each of your aspects a core colour - DR, black, HB, bone, so on and so forth, but make sure you keep the "army" colours as the other colours you use for them.

I like concept 2 for the avengers. To be honest, I think I like that colourscheme better than your original one. But you need to remember to tie the green and purple in, so perhaps green guns?

Scorpion concept (repainted with emarlald green)

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/Smokedog_pics/PICT1607-1.jpg

I decided like the scorpion to paint one colur on top of the purple armour for the aspect, this is the result for dire avenger: The wepaon no longer can be blue.. I have used gold for weapon detials - so it wouldn't be a stretch the these weapons are gold....

I'll try to take better photos tommorow.

Wow - you take it very seriously, these are all good tips, I need to paint a lot and fast, I think I will use water - lots of layers is a good idea too.

All waepons willbe a combination of light blue and gold, i dont really want 3 colours for weapons.

Exactly right purpel with aspect colours, for vehicle I am goign to try black with purple on top and blue weapons (not much green)

You can get acrylic drying retardant from paint shops, and that is great stuff. It stops the paint from drying on your pallet. It's made quite a difference for me over using water.

the white helmets on the scorps looks alot better IMHO, I'm not going to comment on much else, but the green long coats on the rangers doesn't look all that good, maybe a earthy colour would look better on them?

Lord Inquisitor
25-04-2007, 18:17
The white helmets look great. You going to give everyone white helmets then?

Smokedog
27-04-2007, 08:55
@Both. Yes ALL units will now have white helmets with blue weapons, the helmet/face I have found out is one of the first things you look at on a model so, with all helmets the same colour the colour sceme for the army works a lot better.

I have been wrangling with what to do with the amout of eldar I currently own. Originally I wanted 2 squads of ten for every aspect (I already have this) but that would mean in the end 120 models, and thats just aspects... so a little crazy.

so I have taken a 6 squad size rule. So I think I will have 6 in each squad, 6 fire dragons, 6 warpspiders etc. Obviolsy with an exarch this then becomes 7 (just like 2nd edition squad sizes).

then after painting 12 of each - 6 will have the current scheme to see, and the second 6 a variotion. This gives me th option to filed either 2 squads of 7. or one squad of 10.

If I particulary like one aspect I may paint another 6 a thus have 18... but for now I will concentrate on painting 6 of every apect (expect of course dark reapers - of which incidenttally I have 25 :)... roll on apololapse).

More pics to come after the weekend.

Edit - btw I added some hightlights to the scorps - thats why they look better too.. :P

just found out yesterday there will be a BIG tournement in spain end of july. so I will try and get a 1500pt army ready for then.

currently tweaking my army list, but I think it will feature 2 falcons.. lets see if I can get it done...

Anyway I will continue with the 6(7) aspects for now.. here are the dark reaper concepts:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/Smokedog_pics/darkreaper3concept.jpg

Lord Inquisitor
10-05-2007, 17:06
Of the three, the middle one looks best as is... but looking at the Reaper models, I think there'll be far too little black on it. Go for the first one. When you're painting the black, you could put a coat of gloss varnish over the black (you don't even need to highlight it much if you do this) and it'll give it a nice shiny lacquer look. Just a suggestion, but I think it would work well on eldar...

Smokedog
16-05-2007, 20:42

Below is the old model painted about 10 or so years ago:

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/Smokedog_pics/PICT1674.jpg

I had been umming and arrhing about the colours but here is the final result:

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/Smokedog_pics/PICT1676.jpg

Still not sure about the green hair. I thought white might be good also, and red. But red would be one too many colours!
I think iw ill apint the kneepads bone.. have just the head white like the rest of the models...
I can still repaint the hair white.. what you people think?

EDIT can anyone help me on taking photos... the models look much better in real life - I think the colour is off, too white perhaps?

Smokedog
29-05-2007, 10:00
I have finished the banshee squad(ish) - so will post that up soon.

*Update*

After working out my army list for the upcomming tournament, I have stopped doing the dark reapers, and I have started on some warp spiders. I have finished the firest one... that to be posted up soo also.

I think i might change the collar for red in the end... lets see what happens.

Also been thinking about a dark green for my base colour. I am trying to make a retro army. Old models, old paint schemes, and so goblin green for the bases... but now I think I could change it to a darker green without affecting the retro look.

brown is not an option. Opinions?

Quick comments:

1. Looking good, I think unifying all the models in an army is 'muy importante'.
2. White helmets - looks like they are just painted white (or off-white, difficult to tell?) - better to add some more work, like an ink wash then painting white highlights?
3. Banshee green - again not highlighted? add some white to the green, maybe a touch of yellow, and just very gently paint or drybrush the highlights on the hair and cloth.
4. Don't kid yourself - "retro" is an excuse for "I can't be bothered to update the look because I've already got some old models painted from years ago" :)
5. Bases - you are not giving these any attention at all, in fact positively neglecting them, as if they are not an important part of the model. These are the EASIEST way to overcome that "retro" look - just give them modern bases. Why let the models down? In any case - even if you insist on retro Goblin Green (BTW, GW have changed the colour of Goblin Green, so be very careful if you buy a new pot) with retro green flock, you still haven't taken any care. The paint is lumpy and thick on the bases and the flock applied without care [sorry, I'm being brutally honest here - but I really think you can improve the look of your army massively with relatively little effort simply by doing some work on the bases - you'll thank me :) ], not to mention are you guilty of the "exposed slottabase hole" syndrome??

We haven't seen vehicle pics yet, I think Eldar vehicles can be tricky because you can't use the normal rough drybrush look that you can get away with on most tanks. So take care with these. Accept they will take a long time, use several thin layers. And not too dark.

OK, I'm done. Look forward to seeing a photo of the whole army.

You need to tone down on the variation of colours if not your army will appear very chaotic and may even resemble a Harlequin Masque!!

You should get a base colouration and add on additional colours to give a combined feel to the army.

As for the aspects, you can themed them. For example, i themed by Warpspiders Black Widows painting them black with touches of red and white.

Although some *should* be up this week. I have already done teh warpspiders. I am not entirely happy with them... but I think I now have the answer - I am goin to replce the gold on the models for white... should look ok 'specally with the white helments..

Thanks guys,

I was actually thinking of changing the bases - what colour do you think I should go for. I thought I could keep the dark angles rim and go for a rocky look - grey for the bases... (like the wriath lord)

What would you suggest?

mirakel_jocke
17-08-2007, 13:38
Well if we don't take into consideration what the boards look like that you usually play on I would definately ditch the green and go for black or dark brown rims instead.

And on the bases that rocky thing you mentioned could look sweet. Like they are in a plain-ish setting, with rocks and small grasslumps and stuff.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Well, Beleive it or not I have been painting since august last year, got 2 wave serpents on the way and just finsihed the basic purple for my warwalkers. I have decided to concentrate on my vehciles (and wraithlord) as when you are in a tournement they catch the eye, and if they are not painted it looks horrible...

Anyway I have a tourney this saturday, hopefully this will give me some incentive

*edit* I decdied to go with purple rims ont he bases in the end..

Mmmm... purpliness...

At the moment it looks too much purple on the model with the purple around the base too. Perhaps blue around the edges of the bases? And tell me you've got a proper base for that third one, it looks all the more out of place for the purple accent colour there...

Did you finish your jetbikes in the end?

Smokedog

You see the issue was that the other models wernt purply enough... and what do you mean about the third warwalker, its on a flight stand... might raised the base a bit...

jetbikes didnt get finished as I lost the will to finish them once I saw the rumoured new jetbikes, but dont worry they will be done too....

well thought i may as well show the progress on the wave serpents and also put the falcons in...

As you can see, I have differnt paint jobs on each of them. I am still musing over the white on the wave serpents, I realised my eldar looked too "dark eldary" so I am trying to include more white. White options are turrnet and driver capsule, the engline ridges and the spines. Not sure how to go on this, not sure on the white on the engine griills though, it is just a bit to much in my eyes.. prefer the blue on the grill. Want to try and keep white on the capsules though alogh its looks a bit odd and I cannot do it on the falcons.

Should I paint the canopies white??

Thanks for looking.

I love the patterns you did on these! Personally I really like the white engine grills, it gives that extra bit of contrast that really brightens up the model in my opinion.

I think doing the canopies on the Falcons white is a nice idea, I like how the white on the Wave Serpents contrasts with the rest of the model, and the Falcons don't have as much contrast with the clear windows. But it's up to you in the end! :)

They look good, really striking. Angel says she's impressed too...

Now I know the quesiton on everyone's lips this week has been "what has Smokdog been painting recently" so I though I would enlighten you.

No painting update for the moment, I just played 2 games yesterday with 10 wraith guard - warlock - faseer super combo and........ lost miserbly. As soon as they get in combat even with one powerfist its curtains, even if they are wondering around with harlequins....

So either I will not include any or I will include a lot smaller squad...

Current thinking is using vibro cannons, for the fluff in my army they use platforms, so I may well do that. (my fluff revolves around the craftword relying heavliy on technology, heavy support, and farseers (almost zero guardians)) what could be heavier than a giant support weapon?

Well I also played a tournament last saturday, with my normal list, I managed one masacre (against me), one margainal (against me) and one marginal in favor, finished 30 out of 38. ...

This tournament is over 2 days and 6 games - so the list has to be right.. but I am willing to risk (1-3) vibro platforms if it comes to omega... :D

... I might post me list up here later.... :D

Great Paint Job! I love the patterns on the Skimmers.

Maybe it is just me but i feel the colour scheme is a little too candid.
Purple contrast with White and these 2 simple colours with shading will make your models look really awesome.
I think the blue in the colour scheme really distracts and draw attention away from the purple. It will be better to thin down areas of blue colour and devote more to white.

i think you are right, the blue area is a bit distracting, I will look into it, can't ever seem to get anytihng finished, always painting for tournaments!!

Speak of tournaments.. the tourmente was at the weekend, 6 gaems over 2 days.
I'll give a breif description here.

First game agasint another eldar player, he had 2 prims, 1 falcon, harlequins, autach on bike, 2 bike squads, shining spears, maybe sometihng else. It was omega, and my reserve rolls were rubbish, nothing really came on untill it was too late, was looking like a minor victorty for him, untill he deciding to destroy almost everyting I had on the last turn, so masacre for him. One thing worthy of note for me, I blew up a falcon with a vibro cannon, nice 100 points used there.

Second game vs my frind with his deathwing. 5 terminator squads, a commander, 3 bikes and a dreadnough in a drop pod. well. This time he had v bad luck, first termie quad scatrterd a bit, then were charged by harlquins and a farseer, after being doomed, his other termie quad deviated directly on my other harlquin squad and were destroyed instanly. then his reserve rolls were bad and I was able to manover my troops to were his termies were to destyo them. he had 3 termies at the end of the game.

Third game, againtst another friend with choas. Again it was a case of bad dice rolling from him, and pretty much everyhitng working for me. I manged to kill everything by the end of turn six. interesting to note the vibro cannon came in useful when his demon prince and comander were in CC, 6 hits on the deamon prinfe and 3 on the comander. deamn prince took 2 wounds. Again the vibro cannon proved useful.

Day2, first game.
This was agaisnt antoher eldar player, he had 3 falcons, each with fire dragains inside, 2 squads of bikes with warlock, eldrad and a autach on a bike. He used eldard well to re deploy his army at the start. quite a brong match this one, the player was a bit slow. It was reconosence. I dumped around 6-700 point in his deployment, he put around 1000 in mine, nothing really worthy of note, all vehicel in the game survived, vibro cannon nearly downed another falcon (2 6's for hitting - d'oh). Desisive victory for him.

Second game, vs orks. this was a game I was looking forward too. Using the vibro cannon, the warpspider doom, harlequins - it was going to be interesting. He took, 16 guys with the st7 weapons. 3 buggies loaded with orks. around 18 roket powered guys. kandrillo - (the guy that lets you infiltrate on your oponents board edge. a kopter, another warboss on a bike (quite nasty) and around 18 flying squigs??.
He went first, it was omega, nothign happend on turn one really. turn 2, he infiltrated with kandrillo, killing 4 or more of my warspiders. Then my harleuqns came in and kiiled them (after dooming them) It was a tit for tat match. take and hold. Looked like i may have scraped a win on the last turn I put my 2 falcons on the objexctive. On his last turn he manged to kill; 10 dire avengers, and then in close comabt detroy one falcon and imobilise the other.. oh b*gger, no extra poiojnt for me. He won by 749 pint , soa minor win for him.

Third game. Again I played another firnd with his sister/imperail guard combo. Cleasne. Vibro cannon came in verty handy here. All went my waay apart from 1 fleet rolll for my harlequins., imobilising his leman russ with the vibro cannons, and manging to cuas havoc. at the end he had 2 models left on the board and I had all board edges. sHis sisters of battle manged to kill my harlquins, even thouh harlquins wre charging, those miracles 3+ invuinrable is amazing. Hwe had destryoed both harlquin squads, my rangers, and my farseer.

Next tourney is 3000 points paris tourment. That should be intersting, I may take my warith guard, so I should get them finished really, right? hehehe

I think you are right, I will try to dimish the blue. Might change some of the weapons to be black rather than blue, the dire avengers look a bit odd with blue armour and blue guns.... also comtemplating putting white shoulder pads to go with the helmets... decisions decisions.

Well today instead of messing around on the internet or watching T.V I did some paiinting. I stuck together the wraithlord I got of ebay (that was smashed to bits on the post.. nice...) and also did some more work on the wraithguard. The blue areas are either going to be blue or wihte. Current thinking is to paint all the blue areas white.. maybe the loincloth will be blue in the end though... more decisions....

anyway enough of my ramblings on with the pic..
