Just occured to me that this was probably the first picture of a chaos marine (doesn't look quite as human, but that back pack is a dead giveaway). But perhaps I'm wrong - any mention of Chaos Marines in Rogue Trader?

Not in the main rulebook, but Chaos and Chaos Marines are covered extensively in the WH40K/WHFB books (They covered both) Slaves to Darkness and The Lost and the Damned, as are the Sensei although they never really took off and seem to have been largely dropped.

BTW I believe that picture is of a Chaos Renegade rather than a Chaos Marine, although Renegades could start off as Marines too.

Well, I have that WD right here and that pic is titled "In the Eye of Terror". That is pretty good evidence for that guy being a Chaos Marine.

As has been mentioned already, the background for Chaos Marines was covered in "The Lost and the Damned" and "Slaves to Darkness" books which were available at the same time as Rogue Trader (Late 80s).
