Hello!

I recently finished playing KOTOR 2 The Sith Lords and was very impressed with the although it was waaaaay too short for a FRP game, at least compared to Baldur's Gate and the like.
I was wondering how you saw the games and if the first part is longer than the second.

I think they're about the same lenght. The games takes longer when you do all the sidequests, but just finishing the game should go fairly quick.

I prefered the first over the second, even though you can customise your weapons more in kotor 2. Both fantastic games, though.

I got the feeling that the first one was longer, I didn't play it but I wathed my friend a few times and the maps just seemed bigger.

I thought the first one was longer too... But then the first level did seem to drag quite a bit...

I would much rather play a short high-quality game then a long crap game.
KoTor 1 and 2 were both short in comparison to games like Baldur's gate and Torment but they were still class.

I too preferred KotOR 1. The storyline was better (more plot twists) and the Dark Side end movie ruled :D

Hopefully the'll make a KotOR III sometime...

If they do I hope they decide to upgrade the graphics. KOTOR II looking just like I (complete with the somehow unrealistic human faces - I think the mouths are too big) ruined a bit for me, though it was good nonetheless and the paranoia of it was quite amusing. Both are excellent games, IMHO.

The graphics, game-play and customisation of both your character and your equipment (and your party as well, turning them all into Jedi was awesome) of KOTOR 2 was much better than the first one.

But the storyline was naff. As was the ending. And the start. In fact, the only good part about the game was the intermediate bit where you could choose which planets to go to and in which order.

The first level on the mining colony took far too long for an intro level, and then after that you have to trudge through that space station, and then the planets surface with no real chance to start your own adventure yet. Those few hours of what I basically saw as introduction missions were tedious, and I didn't want to repeat them.

If they could have kept the feeling of the first game, and reduced the amount of mandatory storyline stuff (at both the start and end) it would have been a much better game. Kinda like Halo. They improved the mechanics for the second edition, but not the storyline.

I loved being able to customise my characters into different Jedi classes, and then specialise (Sith Marauders rock!) and I loved the amount of detail you could put into Light Sabers and other weapons and armour. I loved being able to upgrade my party members into Jedi. It was all cool. Just the fact that I get stuck running around doing introduction/training missions for nearly half the game really detracted from it's replay appeal for me. I don't want to spend two hours killing mining droids, for gods sake! The storyline could have really used a lot more work, letting you do your own thing much sooner.

I agree about the upgrade and customisation bit, but I thought it was a bit too easy to turn characters into Jedi (though it was cool).
Don't people usually need months, if not years of training before they can properly use the Force? And wouldn't they easily fall to the Dark Side without proper training (this is no problem for a Dark Side character of course) ?

KOTOR I had a fantastic story line. KOTOR II was a bit repetitive in that respect and could never have the same shock factor that KOTOR I had when you found out who you really were.

I had fun with both, while KOTOR II was a little smoother in game mechanics and had been tweaked it was not a huge departure from what made KOTOR I so good. That being said I agree that the first mission in KOTOR II was rather tedious and took so much of the game it made the rest seem too short.

My two cents

Erk, Agree Captain Brown. The first mission in Kotor 2 was very tedious and if I didn't know it was a Kotor game I would have found it hard to play. Nonetheless, they were both choice titles that Lucas should have based films off of.

I enjoyed both. KOTOR 2 was cool especially where you are on the same planets as KOTOR1 but everything is different.

But I have to say, the ending for 2 was a big disapointment. (It looked as if the manager told the programming team "Finish what you have to over the weekend, code freeze is on Monday!") Unfinished story lines, haning threads ... (I do not know if the dark side ending was better :-(

Sadly the Dark side ending is poo to say the least. I have to say though that I really enjoyed both of these games and if I had to pick one over the other I would choose the first one. Purely for the way it knocked me off my feet and actually made me have an interest in star wars.

I loved both of them, especially the first for pure-Jolee Bindo. HK-47 is unforgettable though.

My main beef with KOTOR2 is that it was cut horribly. There was an HK Factory level buried deep amongst some of the code, and the ending was 'teh *****'. The rest of the game was pretty decent though. It was cut short. There was no ending. Nothing happened. So many sideplots were completely left hanging.

GOT0, what? Whats the point? Where was the endings showing HK, T3, GOT0 and that little probe thing?

Carth-ripoff whos name I forget also had soundfiles in the game that were never used, but should have been.

 Not impressed

Even at that though, the game was terrific.

How can you turn all the characters into Jedi? The only true Jedi in No.2 are the blind chicks and you.

WEll, you have to talk to them, and gain influence. Once you've gained influence enough, everybody agree to be trained by you, except from Hakarr (that wookie) and the droids.

I'll also toss in my agreement on the intor mission(s). That is the one big change they should have done. THe story was ok, but as someone already said, they could never top the "shocker" from the first, so I guess this twist was alright.

I seem to remember someone sending me a link to a site that was supposed to have pulled some voice files and text of what should have happened at the end of KOTOR II. It was pretty dark and the rumour was that the ending had to be changed at the request of Lucas Film for it was too dark. I can no longer find it in my email, guess I deleted it.

as a whole I preffered the second one, namely as listening to bastila droan on is as much fun as chopping one's fingers off with a cheese-wire

however I'd have liked more planets but obsidian kind of got cut short in terms of time (I wanted to storm that droid planet with HK and whopp ass :( )

you can't train mandalore to be Jedi either

Ah of course, but no one really uses Mandalore, anyway, do they? Hell, he's cool and all, but he must be the most useless addition of the henchmen. :D

I'd take Bastilla over Kreia anytime. Man that woman can nag...
Bastilla nags too, but at least you can embarras her by flirting with her. :p

Definitely the first one, if not by default. The intro mission on 2 was butt-clenchingly awful. It dragged on for too long, and towards the end of it, the theme seemed to shift from Star Wars to Event Horizion
The crappiness of the storyline can be chalked up to corporate big-wigs pulling strings. There was a similar thread to this on Portent, shortly before it's fall, and someone pointed out how the game was suddenly rushed to make it for the Christmas deadline. God-damned fat-cats!

edit: KoTOR 2 could have used different planets. Utterly disappointed when I discovered how "well" they'd re-used Dantooine, and how naff Korriban was

Xisor
26-07-2005, 22:22
Thats a good point. Korriban was a complete 'a wha...? ' or was that it? feeling.

Had everything else been in correct proportions to the first level(ie long) then I'm sure it would have been an excellent game, as in even superceding the first. But they didn't

Don't forget the horrible refresh rates....

Arnizipal
27-07-2005, 12:15
I played it on Xbox. That version of the game had no problems with the refresh rate as far as I could tell.

Dantooine was allright I guess. The whole ruined Jedi complex was cool.
Korriban was a huge disapointment. The could have placed that encounter with Darth Scion just about anywhere else and it wouldn't have made a difference.
The Dark Side tomb was cool though...

That's the version I'm talking about. Sometimes it's fine, but other times the rate is horrible and the screen jumps horribly all over the place :(

It did (does) slow down occasionally, but i don't think that spoiled the game any.

The complete unfinished nature of the game was able to wreck it nicely enough on its own.

'Galactic balance' indeed.

I'm going to say that I love Kotor II. The first planet is boring however, but I love the rest of it. The Mandalorian Wars HAVE been referred to before, in the visual dictionaries. So they aren't new add-ons to the Star Wars universe.

My fav characters are Atton, Visasmarr, Darth Sion (for now, I haven't beaten the game yet) and Mandalore, who I find quite useful. Handmaiden is annoying but still quite good in the game.

Darth Nihilus...well considering I've seen one movie of him on Peragus, I can't say too much about him. He looks cool though.

I particularly like upgrading equipment. Puts a whole new element onto things in RPG's that I have played.

I quite enjoyed both games, and played trough both at least 2 times completely. KOTOT II seemed not as long as I, and had a quite boring end (the first thing I thought after seeing it was 'damn, now I have to wait for KOTOR III to see how it really works out'). However, the characters and the interaction between them was better done in KOTOR II, and the weapon customization was quite fun.

However there is one thing that bothered me to no end about II. When you finally kill Nihilus, you can ask Visas to bring you his mask... but you can't put it on!!! :(

Well who are you gonna brag about it to? Maybe it was meant to be but in their rush they forgot.

KOTR2 was full of bugs which annoyed me to on end, especialy on Dantooine.

Who cares about a tropy that gives my Sith Lord another +50 force points when he already has more than 600....
