View Full Version : 7th Edition Low Tech Dwarf Army

Hi everyone - new to the forums and I thought I'd take this oppertunity to re-do my Dwarf army. I've got a 2500pt army from the last edition but I really like the look of the new models and with the new Miners coming out soon (along with rumours of a new Lord/Sheildbearer model) I thought this would be a good time to start a new force.

My old force was very much a "shooty" Dwarf list (lots of Thunderers and 3 cannons). For this new army I'm going to try and stay away from the more high tech stuff and go with more Quarrellers/Bolt/Grudge Throwers and more of the characterful units in the army (Ironbreakers/Hammerers/Miners etc).

With this in mind - my first purchase was a battalion box (although this does come with a cannon/organ gun).
From this I've made up 1 unit of 15 standard HW&Shield Warriors, 1 unit of 10 Quarrellers and a unit of 15 Hammerers/Great Weapon armed Longbeards (using the great axes, removing the axe heads and replacing with the various hammer heads in the box).
The cannon I assembled as an Organ gun as I don't have one in my other Dwarf army and thats where it'll stay.

As far as a theme goes I'm from Cornwall and I've always wanted to do a sort of highland themed force so took this oppertunity and went for a Cornish-Kilt-Wearing-Miner-Style force (yes the Cornish also have kilts).
For the colour scheme I had a look at the various Cornish tartans and decided on the Hunting Tartan (see attached pic) as the main kilt colour with blue for the arms.
I've painted up a few mini's as testers for this scheme and i hope to get some pics soon.

I'll be posting an army list in the next few days along with some WIP pics.

Stay tuned.

Cool, there was a bit of a push towards traditional dwarfs back in early 6th ed., mainly pushed by Gav Thorpe but it didn't really catch on. Check out King Alrik's old rules, they might be some inspiration.
How are you going to do your metals?

Warlord Wyquix
15-03-2007, 15:21
Thanks for the suggesting King Alrik - I'd forgotten about him. I'll have to dig out the old army book and have a look.
As far as metals go I was thinking as most of the mines in Cornwall were copper, tin and some zinc & silver so I'd follow those kinds of colours - regular warriors in copper/brass (copper+zinc) coloured armour and elite warriors in a more silver colour.
The usual troops will be done with metallic paints but I wanted to give NMM a go on the characters as I've never done it before.

Waagh! Karak Kernow was my idea for my next Fantasy army :( Ah well, now I have a reason to be lazy and not do it. Other than the fact that painting our National tartan on a test mini went REALLY badly ¬_¬

Ah well, I haven't finished my current non-Cornish Dwarf army yet anyway, so it's all good.

Maybe I'll do my backup Cornwall-themed army instead; Brettonian peasants (or possibly Empire) based on the Battle of Deptford Bridge (with my skill in commanding armies, I'd probably have just as much success on the tabletop as Flamank and An Gof did at Deptford! ¬_¬). It'd probably work better as a Dwarf army though... Empire and Brettonians don't have Blacksmith heroes! Although Dwarves are far too heavily armed and armoured.

You have to have one of your Warmachine crews eating a pasty though. It just has to be done. A Grudge Thrower (lobbing lumps of granite at people, obviously), with a crewman sat on an un-hewn block of granite eating a pasty with a stein of Scrumpy at his side! :D
Obviously a miner would be more appropriate, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective.

Needless to say, I'll be following this'un with interest :p

Sounds nice mate. I was going for some kind of tartans on my own dwarf army but i could covert some nice kilts. But i have Bagpipes as Musician here is a link how they look like and how i had buildt them.

Thanks for the replies so far - got some painting done last night. Did the quarrellers tartan kilts and had a play around with doing the hammerers kilts in the Cornish St Piran's tartan - looks ok but as the colours are mostly black grey and white with only a very small amount of red it doesn't really fit with the rest of the army.

I love this idea, Pasty's all the way! As far as the problem of Dwarfs being too well armoured goes I solved that by filling in most of the chainmail on the kilts with GS before spraying them.

Yup got some bagpipers for my musicians - Cornish pipes are generally not as good looking as Scotts bagpipes as is shown by my poor modelling of them!

Check out the pics attached - appologies for the bad quality, they were done in a bit of a rush before I left for work this morning.
Hopefully will be able to do some better ones tonight.

Hey everyone thanks for all the comments and ideas. Spent this morning coming up with a rough 2250pt army list (at work using Army Builder so may not be 100% accurate - will check when I get home).

Edit: Army Builder sucks so heres the new updated one with proper points costs etc.

The list:

1 Dwarf Lord - Shieldbearers, Master Rune Alric the Mad, Rune of Cleaving,
Master Rune of Gromril, Rune of resistance (290)

1 Thane - BSB, Strollaz Rune (145)

1 Runesmith - 2 Runes Of Spellbreaking, GW, Shield (126)

15 Warriors - H/W&S, FCG (160)

20 Warriors - G/W, FCG (225)

10 Quarrellers - FCG (125)

10 Quarrellers - FCG (125)

19 Longbeards - G/W, FCG (262)

23 Hammerers - FCG, Shields, Master Rune of Grungi (379)

15 Miners - FCG, Steamdrill (215)

1 Grudge Thrower - Rune of Accuracy (105)

2 Bolt Throwers (80)

All for a grand total of 2247pts. If anyone has any suggestions please comment.

Spent the weekend finishing the 10 Quarrellers and made a start on the Hammerers. I also went down to my local GW and had a go with the new foundation paints they had there. Very impressive - put myself down for a pre-ordered box come April!

Just need to do some finishing touches here and there. I also want to put the back row of all my quarrellers on Granite chips to elevate them a bit, which is why the basing isn't done on the back rankers - need some time to go rock hunting on the moor (when it isn't snowing!)

They could work as a heavy/light cavalry Dogs of War rare choice. I've thought of doing similar using the dwarf bear riders from Reaper.

Changed the army list so its actually correct to the Army Book - do you think 2 bolt throwers or another grudge thrower for the final special slot?

Thanks very much I've just started work on the Hammerers - going to be main tartan colour scheme but with the Cornish Black & Gold on the arms/banners/anything thats not a kilt.

Something like this:

If just had a look on the DoW page online and do you think Ram riders would be Light or Heavy Cavalry - I'm tending towards light.

Personally, I'd have thought Heavy.

Light Cavalry tends to be fast, unarmoured and - most of all - usually Elven :p

Dwarves aren't any of those things. ¬_¬

I'd consider a Ram to be pretty tough - tougher than a horse, anyway. And not as fast (although still as fast in game movement terms obviously). And if it's got a Dwarf riding it, it's not going to be lightly armoured. So, yeah... Just my two penneth.

ZeroTwentythree
19-03-2007, 22:39
I'd go with the heavy cav DoW also. I really like being able to use the DoW to fill in and make use of figures that aren' part of the base list.

Mind you, I'm not certain how I feel about goat riding dwarves... but to each his own. ;)

Well, the ram riders seem to be light cavalry to me ( at a glance), but it seems they have dwarf cavalry in many types of armor, and riding everything from pigs to lions to wolves to (gasp) horses.

IMHO, because they will be 'counts as' anyway, pick the models you like and the ruleset (heavy or light cavalry) that fits your list.

The hammerers are underway - tartan is painted as well as the arms and most of the beards. Will hopefully finish them tonight. Heres some WIP shots:

Aaaaannnnnddddd look what arrived yesterday!

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00184.jpg

Replaced all their sissy swords with proper Dwarfish axes - I'm thinking of trying to change the stance of some of the rams a bit, possibly adding some rocks/hills to the bases and making one rear up-kinda-thing.

More updates later tomorrow hopefully!

IMHO, because they will be 'counts as' anyway, pick the models you like and the ruleset (heavy or light cavalry) that fits your list.

Thats what I'm going to go for - depending on what I need them for I'll just use them as "counts as" DoW light or heavy cavalry.

Hmmm lacking in updates it would seem! Fear not update with pics comencing now!

Spent a load of time over the weekend painting up the Hammerers. Decided to try out oxidising the copper of their helmets to give it a greenish tinge using green ink. Worked ok IMO but I'll leave you guys to decide.

I was going to spend the rest of the weekend doing the warriors and maybe starting the Ram Riders but I found this post here: http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12621&hl=ironballs
I've now decided I want my ram riders to look something like the "horde" style layout in that post and with this in mind I started on a base:

That's a bloody amazing idea, I can't believe I haven't seen it elsewhere. Would be perfect for Chosen Chaos knights (to which nothing ever goes bad for) or Dark Riders/etc. (where they're either there or plain wiped out)

Can you paint up one of the riders faces so I can see how it looks?

Warlord Wyquix
27-03-2007, 12:41
Yeh I really like the horde style of setting them out, not sure about how well it'll play though, the base size is the same as 3x3ranks (i've got 7 riders, 3 in 1st rank, 3 in 2nd and 1 in 3rd) so the only problem I can see is when someone uses a template against them.

An update... surely not!

Yep I've finally managed to get back onto this project after a couple of months. Since the last update I haven't done a huge amount, touched up the quarrellers and hammerers, started the tartan on the warriors and built a BSB.
Hopefuly I'll get some nice pics up soon - took a few before work this morning and they came out aweful.

I've also started a bit of a terrain blog here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80868) which focuses on creating a Cornish mining board.

I'll be back later this evening with some pics and another update.

I've got many of my skaven mounted on group/horde bases and what I've done for template issues (and resolving other issues where minute base alignment is important) is to cut a piece of clear acetate to the same size as the unit, then score it lightly where the base edges are.

So, with the cav unit described above, you would take a 75mmx150mm piece of acetate, score it so it's marked out in a 3x3 grid of 15mmx50mm "bases." If a template weapon hits, hold the clear acetate unit grid over the horde base, then hold the template over that. (Or temporarily replace the unit with the acetate, whichever you & your opponent prefers.)

I do like the REM way of attaching them. I glued my figures down and now I want to rip them up and use magnets like you are. Too many figures to rebase, though!

Very nice, I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out. I like how you have them marching down the road.

Cheers for that ZeroTwentythree sounds like a great idea, I'll have to get some acetate and make up some sheets. I'm thinking of doing the same kind of thing with the rest of the army what do you think? I only problem I can see is if I want to reform ranks at any point (ie quarrellers taking a charge).

Should get a bit of painting done this evening so I'll try and do some more to the warriors.

Next purchase on the horizon will be a grudge thrower or bolt thrower, not 100% sure which yet. I was toying with the idea of buying the bret trebuchet and Dwarfing it up (axes, shields, rune carved lumps of granite etc). What does everyone think to that idea?

Until next update,

I'm not really that familiar with the newer dwarf figures. Is that bagpiper a conversion? Looks good! The standard is impressive too.

I've had mixed results with the group bases. Most of the time it is convenient, but on occassion it becomes a bit of a problem. I've mixed mine up into smaller bases, so for example in a unit of 30 clanrats I will have a 3x3 base, a 2x3 base, a 3x1 base and then a bunch of single bases, so I can reform into different formations. It generally works because my army is more of a horde army and tends to either do well or die in large numbers, so "formation" is rarely a concern.

However, I can see where units like your quarrelers might need to be more flexible in terms of formation. It might be a lot of extra work, but you could maybe make a "shooting base" and a second "combat base" with ranks for when you reform. Really I don't have the experience playing the dwarf army to know how I would do it, so that's just an uninformed idea.

The bagpiper is a conversion - lump of GS with axe and standard ends shoved into it.

As far as the REM bases go i think I'lll leave it for a while and think on it I like the idea of 2 bases but as you say it is a lot of work. Maybe something to work on once the army is complete.

Another update!

Been out shopping and purchased another warriors box and a bret trebuchet which I've converted into a grudge thrower chucking huge lumps of granite.

The warriors I've divided up into 5 more hammerers, 10 rangers (15 if you count the throwing axes) and a new crew dwarf for the trebuchet (used the old one for my BSB).

I've also worked a little on the bases of my existing units - adding snow/a little static grass etc.

The Ram riders are from this site: http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=1_4 Part of the Dwarf Wars range.

Just to update everyone else following this log (like anyone actually is), I've been working on my old Ironbreakers from my 6th Ed army, repainted them and rebased them. I've also removed Alrik from his shieldbearers and have ordered some models from the US for my Lord (http://www.nobleknight.com/imagepage.asp?image=2811_G.jpg&name=Daine%20Deepaxe%20-%20Male%20Fighter%20w/Axe%20&%20Shield)and Runepriest (http://www.nobleknight.com/imagepage.asp?image=2601_G.jpg&name=Grim%20Grayrune%20-%20Male%20Cleric%20w/Staff%20&%20Tome) (Reaper Dark Heaven Dwarfs (http://www.nobleknight.com/ViewProducts.asp_Q_ProductLineID_E_2137419066_A_Ma nufacturerID_E_311_A_CategoryID_E_5_A_GenreID_E__A _Page_E_1_A_hidepictures_E__A_ItemsPage_E_20)). They should hopefully be arriving in the next day or so.
I've also started playing around with ideas for an Oathstone for smaller games. I've cut the basic shape out of polystyrene and I'm going to cover it in greenstuff and carve it with Runes etc when its dry.
I'd like to use Thorgrims thronebearers (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99110205105&orignav=13) to carry it but I can't seem to buy them seperatley from the GW online store. Anyone know where I can get them??
Just gotta finish off the Ram riders this week then its onto painting Lords and Heros.

I need to paint up and pin on the Ironbreakers new standard (spare warrior one) and I've also touched up a couple of spots on Lord Kernow since I took the pics (horns, blue inking, shieldbearers etc) so I'll put an nicer updated pic on later. I also need to finish the basing on the Runesmith. At some point this week I'll hopefully get a chance to finish the Ram Riders (which I'm taking forever on I know!). My greenstuff should be arriving anytime soon so I'll be cracking on with my Oathstone (need to order Thorgrims thronebearers to hold it up).
I've also been looking at the Gameszone Hammerers (http://www.artemisblacks.com/gamezone/images/dwarves/05-52%20Dwarf%20Hammer%20Guardians%202b.jpg) which I hope to buy at some point (not this month tho... damn expensive car!).

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Got a few more pics today.
I decided that being the Ironbreakers were supposed to be elite tunnel fighters, and the best way of fighting in a tunnel would be to have a shield wall so nothing gets by, I would give them bigger shields to do to the job with.
After having a root through the ol' bits drawer (yes I have a bits drawer not a box) I found some Tomb kings shields. Cut off the skull/fancy do-hickies and replace them with an ancestor face and you got a dwarf tower shield!

I need some more Tomb Kings shields (roughly 15 or so) to finish the whole unit (when I buy the rest of them) and do a couple of characters. Does anyone have any spares they can give/sell me (I'll pay postage/reasonable amount for the shields).
Otherwise does anyone know of any bits sites (other than bwbits.com, don't have Tomb Kings)?

Pics!!

As per usual my freehanding leaves a lot to be desired but it'll do for the moment.
Works been getting in the way of doing much else but I have made a start on something I've been thinking of for a long time. I'm trying to scratch sculpt some Dwarves (4) to use as honor guard for my lord, carrying oathstones, shields etc.
I have sculpted before but was ages ago and was the yhettes for my Ogre army (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSCF0045.jpg).
I've since found out sculpting Dwarves is a lot different.

Shot with Ironbreaker for scale (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00983.jpg)

But I know I'm nowhere near good enough to capture that amount of detail.

Ah a Pratchett reader, good good!

Spent last night re-arranging my painting desk and shelves and pulled out my 6th ed. Dwarfs (multipart goodness) and was trying to think of something I could convert them into. I remembered seeing a cool ranger converstion from Grimstonefire (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b226/GrimStonefire/RangerWIP.jpg) on the forums a while back and thought I'd give it a go.

Update: GS Rangers!

I've done a few more GS rangers with cloaks and hoods etc.

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01006.jpg

I've also started work on the command group. The champion will be armed with a hammer and have his hood down, possibly a telescope if I can work out how to make one. The standard bearer has a simple icon standard and a lantern in the othe hand. The musician will have a horn of some sort, the one i have in the photo below is too big so I'm gonna look for another.

Good stuff!

I like the hooded rangers a lot. I'll disagree with Arhalien, I like the musician, though as you both mention, the hood will help him fit in. The standard is more of what bugs me. I'm just having a hard time seeing a bunch of rangers sneaking around in the woods or brush with a huge metal icon on a stick.

The oathstone looks great. I'm not really sure what they are, though, since I've never seen anyone use one in any of the dwarf armies I've fought.

I'm a bit torn on the tartan on the standard. On one hand, it looks a bit "loose." Like the lines are a bit far apart. But on the other hand, on a small miniature, viewed from the gaming table, it will probably be easier to see as a tartan without the lines blending together. It would be interesting to see it in person. Coming to the states anytime soon? :D

Looking forward to the next update!

Yeh the rangers standard might need a re-think, any suggestions??

I had a go with doing "lifesize" tartan but it ended up bluring together if it wasn't view right up close. The bigger version looks good in real life I assure you! Won't be coming to the states any time soon, final year of uni's gonna see to that!

I've had a go at the command squad and after asking at bugmansbrewery.com I decided that instead of a banner I'd go for a gobbos head on a stick and a lantern in the hands of the standard bearer. See what you think!

I've sculpted a total of 10 rangers now, just need to finish off the cloaks and backpacks on some. Thinking of making a bit of a scenic base for them with tents and a camp fire.

Thanks very much, yeh I was planning on adding some slayers at a later point, probably to get me up to 3000pts and thats a good idea. Do something a bit like the war paint in Braveheart and the wolds in Arthur. Gonna need to brush up on my free hand!

Thanks again! The dragon was my girlfriends idea. As far as rope goes I may try twisting wire instead of GS, it'll probably be cheaper.

I'm going to attempt to mount it on a 40x40mm gyro base, possibly going to build a mountain on it then have the balloon hovering above. If not it'll have to go on something bigger and probably get shot up in the first turn!!

On another note got a box of 20 miners off ebay dirt cheap so they will soon be adding to Karak Kernow's mighty throng!

As you can see I still need to do the gas bag but apart from that and the crew its nearly done!
Bought some clear perspex rod yesterday off ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Clear-Acrylic-Rod-plastic-perspex-bar-10mm-x-1000mm-1m_W0QQitemZ300128901022QQihZ020QQcategoryZ26258QQ cmdZViewItem) to mount it and I'll be designing the base for it later.
Not too long til its finished now!

Just finished reading through this thread. I'm inspired by your work warlord its fantastic! The hot air ballon is particuarly good, I love the dragon aswell its a nice touch.

I like the overall cold colour scheme of your army, including the snow bases which adds that extra bit of depth. Once I get my own dwarfs through the post I hope to start a blog of my own. Yours has certainly given me a wealth of ideas.

I certainly admire your conversion work aswell. its inspiried me to do some myself :).

Good Luck on finishing your army and keep up the good work.

Another unit finished finally! Heres the pics of the sculpted rangers in all their painted glory. I tried for a winter camo type thing which just about works, anywho have a look and see what you think:

Rangers

Blurry Closeup
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01094.jpg

Very fun unit to paint up with all the back packs and belts and gubbins.

As I've got these lovely spanking new rangers I've pulled apart the 10 I made earlier (here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1575820&postcount=38)) and assimilated 5 of them into the warriors unit (making 20 now) and started my second unit of 10 Quarrellers.

Started on the Ram Riders again last night but all my paint brushes are now knackered for some reason (I blame foundation paints) so no painting updates until at least saturday when I can go out and buy some more brushes.

Heres a running total of everything I've bought/painted etc so far.

Lord Kernow & Shieldbearers (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00298.jpg)
Battle Standard Bearer (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00276.jpg)
Runesmith Gorran Hammersmith (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00304.jpg)
Dwarf Lord & Standard Bearer boxset (might use this as my Hammerers command when I eventually buy the Gameszone Hammerers)
20 Warriors (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00271.jpg)
10 Quarrellers (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00273.jpg)
5 Quarrellers
10 Rangers (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01095.jpg)
20 Miners
20 Hammerers (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00272.jpg) (Stand in Hammerers until I get the Gameszone ones then they may become Longbeards)
12 Iron Breakers (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00987.jpg)
Grudge Thrower (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00275.jpg)
Dawi Dirigible (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/airshipshopped.jpg)
Ram Riders (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC00226.jpg)

Anything without a link is stuff I've bought but not painted up yet.
I need to buy some more Warriors, get some Longbeards sorted out, buy the GZ Hammerers, get 8 more Iron Breakers and buy a couple of bolt throwers.

Oh and if anyones got the gobbos from BfSP kicking around spare I'm looking to start a small goblin force some point soon.

Ha! Nice phnotoshopping. I like how she incorporated the base from the baloon into the mountains in the corner.

The rangers came out nice. The cloaks look good, sclupting-wise. It's hard to tell about the color. I don't know if it's the photos or what. Are they grey & green? I suppose it's what rangers are supposed to do, but they sort of blend in a bit.

Still love the bagpipes.

Sorry for the lack of updates this past couple of weeks. Been a bit of a weird one and only managed to get some of my miners part-painted. I've divided them up into units of 10 then added various bits and pieces like the mining cart to form unit fillers, giving me 2 units of 15, one unit of 20 or a huge unit of 30 depending on how I want to play them.
I'll try and sort out some pics later on.

The other reason I've not been doing a huge amount on my Dwarfs in my new Night Goblin force which will soo have its own project log as soon as all my stuff arrives from ebay/GW/various Warseer trades (thanks LOTRCROWN & alexh). Will be posting the log somewhere around here so keep an eye out for it!

Cheers ZeroTwentythree, the general idea was for the Rangers to blend in with a wintery moorland setting so I've done them in a grey/white camo scheme with little bits of blue and the odd hint of green. I seriously need to get some better pics of them to show them off properly.

Annnnd finally an update!

Well luckily this thread is still here!

I've been out of action for a while due to uni and work etc.

Finally found time to come back to Warhammer and my beloved Dwarfs

First of all I've finished my Gamezone Hammerers
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01776.jpg

Excellent models but an pain to rank up!

I've also started a unit of Slayers, waiting for my Games Day Slayer to arrive from ebay as the unit filler.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01770.jpg

This is the Thorgrim model which I won really cheap on ebay and decided to make into a sleigh and use the bearers as Oathstone carriers

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01774.jpg

Oathstone using a really old giants stone (still wip)
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/such_the_fool_2007/DSC01772.jpg

Again gonna use this as a unit filler, possibly for my Longbeards.

I've still got another unit of 15 miners to paint up and have just completed another 2 units of 10 crossbow men. Looking forward to get back into everything now and getting a game or two in!

Cheers

Ah, good to see this log still going :)
I'd missed the grudge thrower from earlier and I'm annoyed I did; that thing is superb, and the scenic base really adds to the model.

I can;t really comment on the hammerers because of the picture, although they look to be good.
The slayers are looking nice, although I;'d say their beards lack depth. I'd suggest giving them a wash of something like brown or purple maybe (I know very little about colour theory but I think those would work) to get in the crevices, then maybe a final drybrushed highlight of orange.

Oathstone is looking brilliant; will there be anyone on top of it?

Just bought this guy (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/newimage.asp?Size=A&Img=256169) which I'm going to sculpt a kilt onto and use as my thane in smaller battles.

Going to try to get my Oathstone finished tomorrow and I'm looking to buy some of the metal Longbeard models, or some other models that look better as longbeard than the GW plastics with mask stuck on! Any suggestion would be great... I'm looking for something with REALLY long beards!!

Cool!

The only thing that looks a little odd is that the scales that are facing upside-down (first pic) look a bit awkward. What is the scaley surface supposed to be? Like a dragon gut/skin bellows? (Since you mention the skull...)

Glad to see you're back.

Yeh its supposed to be dragon hide, I wasn't sure about the upside down scales myself but tried it the other way and then didn't meet up properly in the middle. I just figured it was dragon hide wrapped around something to make it fire proof!

Arise my beauty! Arise!
Yes it is a bit of threadomancy but after 4 years I've got my Dwarfs out of storage and given them another seeing to.

I've been inspired by Avatars of Wars amazing new Ironshields and a couple of conversion ideas I've been kicking around for a while.

So without further ado, my Ironshields:

http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj525/such_the_fool5/20130106_185624_zps27ba072d.jpg

My lighting and camera skills still leave a lot to be desired but you get the idea.

I've also been working a new cannon kit bashed from the Ogre Ironbelcher. Figured it looked suitably Dwarfish and added the old Reaper crew I had lying around.

http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj525/such_the_fool5/20130106_185733_zps4cda33e8.jpg

Some of things I'm working on are:
- Avatars of War Berserker Regiment with some of the Scibor Dwarven ruins as unit fillers.
- A small unit of Priestess of Valaya/Forgemaidens
- Steam Traction engine inspired by the descriptions in the Black Library Dwarf books.
- Scibor Bear Cavalry unit, I have a couple of models wip need to get them finished.

Hopefully Forgeworld will release Battle of Black Fire Pass soon so I have some more bits and pieces to play with!

- Tidy up bases and add snow.
- Do a banner design, thinking some sort of runic troll head-glyph style thing.
- General tidying up.

Cheers

Changed the jumping slayer for one of the AoW Slayers and moved him on top of the statue.

Now that's what I call a terrific looking slayer unit. Very dynamic!

Great job! Snow effect is very cool as well. The banner is sweet! I think it was a good choice to change the jumping slayer out with the AoW guy
