Opening with an inspiring pic is a must I'd say. I noticed that the Half-page pics in the Tyranid Portion of Armada are both halves of the same picture and so spliced them together, the picture has much more depth in its original state.

Basically I'd just like to discuss in depth Tyranids in BFG; from gaming, to modeling, to fluff and so forth. I've got plenty of my own paragraphs and ramblings to pull from, but I'll hold them back and see what others would like to put forth first.

So, what's your take?

Awesome thing to notice there... it does add a ton to the image.

Secondly your Tyranid fleet is inspiring and something I may (once I get other projects done) mimic, given a through tutorial. I think this is one of the strengths of the Tyranid fleet for the veteran modeler.

On background - it is kind of not there (like so many things that do not focus on the ground battle). But the composition of Hive Fleet Behemoth I suspect was different from Kraken and Leviathan different from both of those.

Kraken I would think at this point is a group of smaller semi-independent fleets since it has scattered. Maybe a Hive Ship or 2 with a few Krakens in support, largerly made up of the smaller, easier to replace Escorts. Also HF Kraken probably has the most range of any of the fleets, survival is important for the splinters at this point and they are dealing with races that are capable of figuring out to stay at arms length or prefer arms length in general

Leviathan could be anything at this point, I do however suspect that it is very close quarters focused as the Orks love this. This fleet may be swelling in size with a huge number of Krakens and few escorts - since generally the meal comes to them!

Very likely the best close range fleet in the game, considering that they arent good otherwise. Seems to me that given the bio enhancements table players have a lot of versatility and adaptability with in the neighborhood of 30 possible configurations for each smaller ship class and even more for the cruisers and Hive ships.

Excellent opportunities for conversions, which is the route nearly every Nid BFG player I've ever heard of has taken.

In particular, the Kraken are easily the most resilient and well armed escort about along with being fast and manoeuverable by Nid standards.

Nid Hiveships, when properly equipped and upgraded, have the potential in them to be one of the "great ships" out there, in the same group as the Planet Killer, the Hulk and Necron Tombship.

They are a very ordnance happy fleet and are perhaps the best when it comes to flooding a board with markers.

Drawbacks: Very few speedy or long ranged ships. This means they are easily picked apart by Eldar ships and have trouble bringing the Necrons to bear as well.

They are very very short ranged on guns so they are forced to rely on ordnance and fast escorts to disrupt the enemy before the heavy hitters arrive.

Even their ordnance is slow by comparison to other races which offsets their superior ability to blanket their enemies in it.

Krakkens are cool for sure, but I really like escort drones too. 15 points for a sword frigate? I'll take ten. The S2 Bioplasma will also definately see some action, but the short range keeps it from being relied upon too heavily. Also no hivefleet would be complete without some crunchin' and munchin' elements, so some squidlies with feeder tendrils/massive claws should make an appearance.

As for how to build my hivefleet, a tutorial will come, it's just going to take me some time to get around to. My current plan is to put rough drafts into my Project log one at a time, and then when they're all ironed out I'll put them into one massive "How to Build your own Hivefleet" for Overwatch. With my current supplies I get too excited and put it together before I think to take pics, and then all that's left is the finished product and no more bitz to make another.

Through trades I've got about 3 Tyranid Player's Entire bitz collections coming in the mail, so I should have plenty of opportunities to take progress pics. Like at the moment it looks like I'll be able to build at least 5 of the Large hiveships like the one I've built already, and a few oddball ones here and there that I'll invent along the way. I will also have Emperor Knows how many escorts, and as many cruisers as the hiveships will allow. Cruisers seem to be frowned upon by most, I think it's because people view them as an inefficient middle in a fleet that "competitively" should mix tiny and massive ships. Or maybe it's just because the Razorfiend model looks retarded, not sure. Either way the clean slate of modeling my own and some Ideas I've had should put them to good use, and I hope others will take to liking them in game.

Here's all the converted ships in my fleet, with a regular hive and escort thrown in for scale. I'm not nearly as good a converter a most others around here, but I can get by well enough to give my fleet some variety:

The hive ship a bit closer up. It's not my design - I found it on the web somewhere along with a complete bitz list & instructions. I can't find it now or I'd link to it. :(
It's meant to be the grown-up version of the standard cruiser model.

And Mr. Claw (cruiser) and Mr. Tentacle (escort). Both very very easy to do.
Mr. Claw's mandibles were sized & placed so that, if they opened up, they would neatly fit an imperial cruiser hull inside.

There's a couple others in the fleet that I haven't provided close-ups of. The claw escorts are as simple as they look. There's another tubby little escort who is meant to be a juvenile version of the hive/cruiser genus, and a torpedo cruiser who I think looks nice with his opposite-pointing claw sets, but the greenstuffing on him is so awful that I'm embarrassed to show him in any more detail. :p

Very nice work Steve. I for one am glad to see Nid BFG players doing the full spectrum of ships available to them. After a while it gets really tiresome hearing about what the most "competitive" configuration is for this fleet or that. Also I am one to believe from their stats that the razorfiends are a lot more worthwhile than the "competitive" player opinions would lead us to believe. Launching two salvos of boarding torps in a single turn sounds unique and useful no matter how many ways one slices it.

I've rather been a fan of using Nid parts for conversions as well- I think I have my daemonship, which drew a some inspiration (and teeth) from the Tyranids, floating around on the Tactical Wargames forums.

Can't wait to see more of your work Steve, especially when you get around to making your scratch built DE fleet. At the moment I am expanding and furthering my fleet and while the initial ships looked like the standard stuff GW sells I've recently been experimenting with increasingly radical and asymetrical looks for the corsairs. Unlike most players out there I actually kinda like the main hull designs of the GW DE ships. But I digress, your nid ships look beautiful and better by a wide margin than anything GW has produced for a Nid fleet. Im particularly fond of the Hive ship and look forward to seeing more of it's kind, assuming you intend to build more.

A humble converter? Surely you don't do yourself enough credit. The Hiveship is wonderful, and I like the concept of it being a grown up cruiser also. And those tiny escorts with the tentacles are beauties as well. Post them again here when you are done painting them!

Hmm, not bad.

Never thought of trying to mimic the Razorfiend design, I'll have to try that with my left over Scything Talons.

I always kind of wondered why Tyranid bio-constructs would actually have the backward-facing, sweeping claws. One justification I thought of was that [with four of them at least] a cruiser or hiveship could land on a small, low gravity moon, resting until the fleet is called by the pull of a vanguard detachment. With a slow and mighty force of action, the hiveship could lunge, casting itself away from the planetoid and then using it's organic fuel to boost itself the rest of the way out of its gravitic pull. The escort sized bio-constructs would stay in orbit, semi-aware to defend the resting cruisers and Hiveships.

Semi-plausible, would certainly make for some excellent scenarios.

@Zhai-Moren: Wait, which Steve? I'm IncrediSteve yes, but Destris is also Steve, so this could cause confusion amongst us nid converters:p

double edit: nm. Confused ReDavide with Destris for some reason.

lol, I was meaning you, IncrediSteve, sorry about the confusion. Any case, yes, I like your concept for the hiveship quite a lot along with your other escorts.

The main 2/3rds of my Tyranid bitz trades arrived, so now all it's going to take is for me to find the time and will to make some articles, and it shall be done.

I've got the bitz for 5 more Hiveships and essentially infinite escorts, so there will be ample opportunity to take progress pics, make how-to's, and experiment.

I will easily have 5000+ points of Tyranids after this, making them a match for my Imperial Navy. I'll be sure to run an epic Battle report somewhere down the line of this Ultimate clash.

The $300 Fleet vs the $50 Fleet.

What sort of weapons do you guys' lists use on a fleet-wide scale?

i.e. does your fleet tend to include more direct-fire weapons, more ordnance, or more close-combat weapons? And within each of those tree categories, what is your preferred weapon type?

My 1500-point fleets usually have about 32 strength-points of batteries, and 12 strength-points of bio-plasma. Ordnance-wise I'll usually have 10 strength of attack craft and 8 of torpedoes. The rest of my weapons are close-combat attacks, where I generally prefer to gently caress my dinner with tentacles instead of ripping it apart with claws (I wanna say 6 tendrils and 2 claws, but that's just an estimate).

During play it feels very heavy on the ordnance and close-combat attacks, making it great at disabling enemy ships but slow & difficult to kill them.

How do your fleets compare playing-style-wise?

Tentacles and assault boats a must to pulverize enemy escorts, and to disable the capital ships to reduce the amount of incoming fire and speed so your bigger ships can get their claws into them. I tend not to bother with bio-plasma. The perk of ignoring shields is nice but the short range is crippling and by that stage you're almost in range to grapple and board anyway.

hehehehe

I am doing some similar work, but I'm taking a slightly different route.

I'm using the devourer for my Vanguard Escorts, and I'm using the gaunt bodies for the Krackens.

Pics once I finish some more work!

IncrediSteve

I've also got some gaunt-bodied krakkens, currently armed with Torpedoes.

I was bored today, and found an old lictor body and talon arms.

So, I stuck the talon arms on where the legs should go, and put a catachan man eater plant (from the heavy weapon boxes) on the stump for the head. Needs greenstuffing, but a simple conversion for a clawed and tentacled cruiser.

I've got about 40 Devourers that have been chopped up into component parts and g/s tentacled at the back (they look like small spikey squid). Perfect for the tiny vanguards. Half have the batteries, the other half, tentacles.

And dead simple to make - just need a fair amount of g/s for the squiggly bits.

The claws and such I tend to stick on Cruisers, backed up by bio-plasma, with the hiveships bringing massive batteries and/or ordnance. I tend to use a lot of ordnance, if only to try and direct the enemy around the table and herd them to where I'd like them to be.
And every escort is pretty much expendable for the same purpose, too.

I tought of making a fleet from Tyranid battleforce set. Warriors as cruisers and gaunts and genestealers as escorts. All leftover parts will be made as ordanance. There's also a Carnifex on the set that will present Hive ship, but will it be too big? Thing's a bit bulky so what upgrades should I use with it?

IncrediSteve
08-04-2007, 20:47
Actually you're better off just building the Battleforce to use in 40k and making a BFG Hive Fleet from the bitz. You get more than enough gubbinz to do so, and IMO full gaunt/warrior bodies look tacky when converted to ships.

Pioneer
09-04-2007, 14:22
Ofcourse not to use the parts as they are. I will try to make them look as much as possible different from the actual warriors, gaunts and suchs...

I found a neat hive-fleet-modelling article over on Dysartes while googling for nid pics:

It's a quite nice-looking fleet if you ask me. Just thought some of you might be interested too.
