So I'd like everyone to post links to totally free games they play and to give brief reviews if possible.

www.enemy-territory.com
Completely free, nothing needed to play it. It's a team, objective based FPS, playing as either Axis or Allies (helpfully demoted by an American flag  )
Lots of fun, especially if you hook up to server with a decent group of player. You get to pick one of five classes from covert ops, medics, soldiers, engineers and field ops.

http://www.daimonin.net/
Completely free MMORPG, 2D isometric graphics which aren't much to look at but do what they're there for. I've only just started playing but it looks pretty deep so I'm hoping to get into it. You can choose your race to start with but further in you can dedicate yourself to a god, learn spells, buy items - all the usual things.

http://www.eternal-lands.com/
Another free MMORPG, almost the opposite of Daimonin - it has 3D graphics (mid PSone era in quality) but is lacking in many areas - it's fun for a while but soon becomes repetetive. No real depth to speak of. Worth downloading I suppose, it'll probably improve as the game is added to by the designers.

Anarchy online is totally free at the moment for those who havn't seen it.

Daimonin sounded interesting, but now I appear to have a problem. When I try to start it up, the screen shifts upwards, making the uppper part of the game invisible, and leaving a black space below it. How do I solve that?

Erm.. not entirely sure - I had lots of problems when I first DL'd it, the best I can suggets is either keep trying (which is what I did) or go to the forum on the website I linked to and look in the technical help sub-forum.

subspace continuum - the first ever MMO game! (and most fun, i might add)
http://beginners.subspace.net/

GL-117 - action flight simulator,
http://www.heptargon.de/gl-117/gl-117.html

Frozen Bubble - bust-a-move arcade clone.
http://www.frozen-bubble.org/

Slackware Linux! (not a game an OS, but it comes with almost 50 games!)
http://www.slackware.com/

Then there is my free web game, coreward bound. Anyone who remembers trade wars from the old BBS days will feel right at home, and it is playable in a web browser.

www.runescape.com

A free MMORPG, got quite good music and quests is pretty much all I can say. A character advancement system based almost purely on grinding, crap people...I could go on. Still, it's free, and you can get the much expanded version for only 3.20 a month.

It's a recently released third person slash/shooter that has Rpg elements it's an excellent game and worth a try.

Oooooh, lucky me, I just came here to actually start up a thread on this topic! :p

Here's a couple to look at:

Territories 3069 (www.territories3069.com)

Ah, territories, I was hooked on this a few years ago, when I first connected to the net. Apparently it's gone through a few upgrades, but I haven't been near it for years, so I can't comment. Bog standard space empire sim-thingy :p

Space - Glory through conquest (www.space.coldfirestudios.com)

I literally just discovered this before coming to this thread. Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but it looks similar to Territories, only with more character.

Can anyone recommend any decent space-empire games? Or even something similar to Nationstates (www.nationstates.net). I'm loving NS, but it's way too slow for my liking!

You'll have to get to the back of the Love queue I'm afraid, I'm getting so much of it these days.

Very similar to shadowOps - in that it's space based strategy, we have Galactic Conquest:

http://gc.gamestotal.com/i.cfm?p=aboutgc

I've not played it myself, so i can't give a review, but here's a little of the blurb from the site:

Galactic Conquest is a free Massively Online Game with over 350,000 members ! 10,500 AD, you have been elected the leader of a planet. Your goal is to build up an empire that spans the galaxy. Start or join Federations (Clan) and wage war with others. Inspired by Master of Orion and Civilization

Got some recommendations from people I chat to online, might be worth a shot.

At the other end of the scale there's Rubies Of Eventide

http://www.cyberwar.com/home.html

Fully 3D, was originally pay to play and now shareware - very high quality in all areas - nice graphics, lots and lots of proffesions (probably in the hundreds) lots of options for how you play, it's just great - though your computer does need a bit of grunt to play it without lag.

Not even fully released, simply in open beta. Quest mode and premium items come out in November, along with who knows what other goodies.

I'm really looking forward to quest mode.

You're obviously not British sir! A true Englishman knows how to queue!

Sure do - http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html

This one's being made by a group of volunteers - though the graphics are exceptional. It's not the full version yet, so it's still kinda buggy and there are features missing but there's real depth there - in the character generation section you can decide everything up to ominous portents at your bith, your star sign, your parents names and proffesions, events in your childhood, of cours eif you're too lazy you can let the program do it randomly.
The fonts really suck and are hard to read, but if you can get past that you might like it.

cough-cough...

you could try MY game : http://www.xhrit.com/8-bitHELL/Corebound/ It has not been on for very long (less then a month), and I'm not sure if I'd be too quick to call it decent....

But you could try it.

You could have a look at what XGen (www.xgenstudios.com) have to offer I suppose.

Not really tried anything other than Drag Racer myself.

That's basically a 2d version of NFSU drag racing in that you buy a car, tweak it up with components then straightline race for up to 1000m. Race for money and/or pink slips (car titles), or enter tourneys (far less money, but there's always a car).

However, when tweaking the car there are hidden bonuses for groups of components - so don't just go on the basic bonus - other than SVA for Weight Reduction and Tires anyhow (top end components, not available at the start of the game).

Guys, it's great that you're all posting links but try to post at least some type of description or review, the idea was that people could get at least a vague idea of what the features of the game are without having to click through links.

Knight Online
http://www.knightonlineworld.com/

This game rocks.
It's a fully free, 3D, MMORPG. You can pick one of two factions (Law and Chaos, simply put), then your class and profession - there's not a whole lot of customisation available at the start, the main classes seem to be fighter, barbarian, rogue and cleric, with each faction having three races which give bonuses to certain classes.
Actual physical customisation is minimal with three or four head varietites and a similar number of hairstyles.
Once in the game you can by all sorts of equipment to further customise so it's not too noticable after a while.

The game starts in some huge city, nice graphics stick out, as does a HUGE number of players with their trading stalls, standing around talking or running towards the snowy fields outside for some combat.
The fights themselves are intersting enough, you'll start out fighting giant earthworms, banidcoots and some weird giant bipedal lizards, collecting various body parts for rewards back in town. Multiple players can engage in fights against one monster, with the player who dealt the most damage getting the reward.
I think there's PVP combat but only in certain areas. I haven't explored much past the starting city yet so I'm not certain.

That's all I can say for now, I really recommend this over any other MMO I've played.
