View Full Version : Sisterhood of Twilight, Eldar Corsair fleet

This is a new army idea I've been working on for a bit, and decided to do a log on it to help me keep in the groove and continue progress on it. I got the inspiration from the eldar fluff stating that you should have an equal chance of both male and female eldar warriors. But the GW models are mostly men. So I figured all those girls had to go somewhere. Plus I sold off my Sisters of Battle army to get the funding for this little project, and I kinda miss 'em :p I also enjoyed a couple shows called Vandread and Sol Bianca, and decided to draw on those a little and make this new army a pirate force.

Some things I've decided as a consequence:

Mech Eldar all around. The most static things in the army are a few War Walkers. Farseer on Jetbike, Swooping-hawk / banshee combo Autarch, war walkers, falcons, lots of wave serpents, some vypers, and guardian jetbikes, etc etc.

Heavy use of rare earth magnets. Some of my first IG tanks got completely glued together. I have regretted that many times since then, especially since I'm a bit of a stickler for WYSWIG. So being able to change out all the weapons will be nice. But I also hate having to keep track in my head what status effects have happened to every vehicle, so I'm also adding magnets to add something to represent every vehicular condition.

I'm using greenstuff casting off the handful of female models GW has already made to *ahem* "enhance" the male models' chests to female proportions. Also in the greenstuff arena is some modification for the bases. I cast some "stamps" of the cracks in the rock on the war walker bases and will be using those to create some similar effects from a thing layer of greenstuff on each model's base. With the individual stamps each being a small section, I can give a lot of variation on each base rather then trying to cast a bunch of molds for just a few different ones, plus I can get more flexible on the slotted metal aspects bases vs the solid flat avenger / guardian bases.

Color Scheme is based off my little sisters chapter. I liked it, but I never got many of them painted, so it never got a chance to shine. Dark purple for the base color with silver / blue / red trim and tidbits. I've completed one model so you'll see what I'm talking about.

First model completed: War Walker

The model all together and sitting pretty.

Top (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WarWalkerTop.jpg)

As mentioned, I did magnetize all the weapons, and I also magnetized the mid-section so I can take it apart for a "destroyed" result.
All in pieces. (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WarWalkerparts.jpg)

And I also added some magnets to the base to put markers on it for stun/shake/immobilize.

With the markers (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WarWalkerwithMarkers.jpg)

Love those rare earth magnets! (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WarWalkerMagnetDemo.jpg)

Other things currently on the construction table for my first 500 points:
Wave Serpent (already assembled, magnetized, and primed... probably the subject of my next log update)
2 guardian defender squads (one mostly assembled)
Autarch
Small squad of Banshees (mostly assembled)

This looks promising, the walker looks pretty good and I like the idea with the markers.
Good luck with the rest of itI hope it turns out as you want it too.

Thanks Bluesabre :)

Well, sure enough my next update is indeed the Wave Serpent. It's still just primed, but everything except painting is done now. All of my big skimmer tanks will wind up converted in almost the exact same way, so I'm just going to go over it once with this first one.

Once again, the weapons got the magnetic treatment. You can see the nose weapons here:
Nose (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentNose.jpg)
With twin-linked catapults (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentNosecatapult.jpg)
With cannon (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentNosecannon.jpg)
And the turret got it's fair share as well, magnetizing the armor plates that hold the weapons on as well as the turret's connection to the hull.
Turret all in pieces (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentMagnetTurret.jpg)

I didn't have a base this time around like the war walker really. So I had to change up how I did the markers.

I've seen a lot of people just not glue the flight bases on so they can pull them off when immobilized, but they're also always having trouble keeping it on when they want it. So I took the idea a step further and made the sucker magnetic, though I had to use some chunks of sprue to reinforce the vehicle-side mount on that.
Magnetic flight base (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentBase.jpg)
The internal fitting brace (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentBaseMount.jpg)

For destroyed, I can just pop the weapons off and immobilize it, since that's the same diff, and it doesn't have as easily-magnetized a central joint like the walker (Getting the entire top to magnetize would be a beast). That leaves Stunned and Shaken. So I mounted some magnets in the hull on the sides that can use it instead. I did something similar for my chaos dread's havoc launcher so thought I'd give it a shot.
Hull Magnets (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentTokenMounts.jpg)
Tokens on hull (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentTokens.jpg)

Of course, the model's not supperbly balanced on the flight base naturally, but I'd rather it lean forward then back, so I added some balance to it with strips of green stuff and BBs.
Who knew they used BBs for Shuriken ammo? (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WaveSerpentBalance.jpg)

The final result is the wave serpent just waiting for a paint job between work and college.

Do you happen to have pics of how you did the War Walker weapon mounts?

Very nice work all around, from theme to scheme to execution. My one gripe is the tokens on the Wave Serpent, which I really don't like at all. Could you instead make smoke or flames? Anything showing some real internal difficulties, not just signs popping out of the tank. Would be amazingly easy to take a magnet, put a small ball of greenstuff over it, glue on some wispy cotton, and spray some black on it.

hereticdave, ask and ye shall recieve!

I just took a pin vice and drilled a hole in the mounting down a bit below where the slot would normally bottom out, then superglued a stacked pair of magnets into it. I found just 1 magnet wasn't reliably strong enough, so I added the second and haven't had any trouble with wobbly weapons since. The weapon itself had a notch cut into the little tab it would normally fit into the weapon mount, and just put the matching magnet in there. I left the joint black on the mount and weapon both so the notches in the side of the mount from the drill hole aren't noticable.

A Weapon for the mount (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/WarWalkerWeapon.jpg)

Pekel, thanks for the idea! I love it! I'm not sure when I'll get to it, but those markers are just sprue bits with magnets glued on anyway, so I can make new and different markers to my hearts content :) Maybe do just some whisps of white smoke for shaken and some dark smoke for stunned. Then make a pair with flames to stick on for Destroyed :)

Well, I'm not sure if kjmagnetics is ideal for Canada, but the magnets I used were the D101s found here (http://kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=10), if that helps any.

They were a pain to get glued in there right at first. Finally figured a decent way out though. Drill hole, fill with a drop of superglue, then put the magnets on the end of a thick paperclip or similar small metal object. Put them in the hole, then use a wedge of plastic to hold them in place while you pull the metal bit back out (I cut the end of a piece of sprue into a skinny wedge). That one little plastic tool I made has saved me a bunch of headaches in this project already. Not bad for a stick of left-over sprue :D

Some more progress!

A quick update on how the wave serpent is going with the painting. The basic colors are down, leaving just the detailing and matte / gloss varnishes to go.

I've also been working some more on constructing the howling banshees, and they're ready for priming. I've traditionally used superglue to bond joints on metal models, but I'm trying something a bit different this time and using Greenstuff to make the bonds. I've been doing that for the bases for a while with great effect, so hoping it works out well on the smaller joints too. In theory, it'll dry a lot less brittle then the glue, enabling the girls to take an impact if they get dropped on the floor. Something metal models are not well known for.
The squad so far (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/HowlingBansheesbuilt.jpg)

I'm doing the bases all with greenstuff this go around. I made some stamps out of greenstuff from the war walker base's stone cracks
Ye ole Stamps (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/BaseStamps.jpg).

Then just roll out a flat bit of greenstuff to put on the model bases and use those stamps to rough in a cracked stone base to match the war walker look, and finish off with a smoothing water-brushing. I've only based the banshees so far, and I plan to prime and paint at least one before committing to it for the entire army.
Exarch with better view of the base (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/HowlingBansheeExarchbase.jpg)

I'm also thinking of adding some big ferny fronds to the exarch bases like the ones on my old tyranids.
Including Waldo, the only 'nid with a toothbrush for pearly white teeth. (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Tyranids/spineguants-front-based.jpg)

And then put small fronds or twigs worth on bases of squad members with any special weapons (like the storm guardians or warlocks).
As seen here. (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Dwarf/warriorright.jpg)

Gotta wait for some primer to come in for a few days, but I should be able to get more done on the wave serpent during that time.

More Progress!

I finished up the Wave Serpent I've been working on and also got my guardian defender squad assembled. The guardians themselves have just been converted to be 100% female figures (though I did have to cast an arm bit for one that was missing). The heavy weapon platform was modified in the same way as the war walker so they can interchange weapons freely. Alas, the pics didn't come out so good. No big loss on the platform though since we already have the walker and it's still in the early stages.

Items coming up on the table for my first 500 points:
**Paint my first test Banshee
**Complete conversion of Autarch for gender & magnetics
**Base and Paint Guardians
**Construct / Convert first 5 Dire Avengers

Thank you! When I order the magnets to finish my Carnifex I'll be sure to get enough to do this on my tanks as well.

Everything's looking good, and the greenstuff female torsos are excellent. Great idea with the crack stamps. I also really like the fronds you're using - I'm hoping I'll be able to find some just like that for when I redo my own Tyranids (yours look very nice, by the way - any more pictures?).

I don't have any more pictures of the 'nids, as I traded my dozen completed gribblies off a while back. I do still have plenty of the fronds themselves though. FYI: They're just aquarium plants. Specifically: Auqa Culture brand, Cabomba, Stock No. AP6-EX(3112/15). Got them for just a couple dollars at a Wal-Mart ages ago. You can probably find some fake Cabomba plants in about any pet / aquarium store section.

Well, I may not be a very speedy painter, but I did get my test Howling Banshee all finished today. Wound up using 22 colors. Slightly above average compared to my old chaos marines (15-18 on them). I tried some extreme highlights and I'm pretty happy with the results. The greenstuff crack-stamped ground worked out quite well too, I'm happy to say :)

Well, it's been a few days, but I've been a busy little beaver (by my standards anyway :p) And I've finished up my initial Howling Banshee Squad. I'm very happy with how they've turned out. I know there's room to improve. There always is. But this is deffinately a step up from my old work, and it's always nice when you can see sure progress in your painting skills :)

Well, they do look a lot like the Zendradi (sp?) walking pods with these new sculpts. Which is fine by me, just means I'll add the Robotech theme song to my mp3 player's playlist for games ;)

Ok, finished the Test Guardian. I tried something a little different on this one. Kinda like Dipping, but not quite. Put on all the colors and highlights, then give it a wash of ink. the idea was to get a more muted color scheme for the guardian as a whole. Afterall, these are just the civilians, not the fancy trained aspect warriors in full ritual battle armor.

I like how the purple areas came out. I was much easier on the highlighting with them and I think that worked better. The blue highlights are too big I think, and they'll be toned down on future guardians. I'm not too concerned about re-painting this one to fix it. It'd be just as easy to build another (got another full squad unassembled with no plans for it right now).

Anyway, here's the pics of the Test Guardian:
Front (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Guardians/TestGuardianFront.jpg)

Right (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Guardians/TestGuardianRight.jpg)

This method also winds up being much much faster for me to paint. I figure this one took maybe 2 to 2 1/2 hours to paint completely, and later ones will be a bit faster.

Some more work done!

First up, I've refined the painting on my new guardian a bit. The highlights are a little more subtle and blend in better I think. Have a Look :)

Back (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Guardians/RefinedGuardianBack.jpg)

I've also been doing the conversion work for my Autarch. The torso gets greenstuffed, of course. But I also magnetized the two backpack options (wings and flags) with a magnet each, then put a set of 4 magnets lined up in the autarch's back. They hold together quite well with that much of a magnetic field going.
Torso (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Autarch/Autarchtorsogreenstuffed.jpg)

Autarch's back (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Autarch/AutarchBack-modified.jpg)

Still plenty of guardians to paint, and more assembly on the autarch once the greenstuff finishes curing. After that: Dire Avengers.

I think I see what you mean, but I believe it's just the off-center straps combined with the slightly twisted torse pose that's making them look a little off. It should look better once the arms are on.

Well, it's been a while. I've gotten several of the Guardians done, though not much to see yet with that squad.

I did, however, finally get my Autarch all done! Yaaaay! (And the peasants, rejoiced) The lighting seems to be kinda bleh in the pictures, but here's the best of the crop. First some pics of the flags...

...and then the wings.

Right (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Autarch/Wings_Right.jpg)
...and a full frontal view (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/Autarch/Wings_Facing.jpg). I think the chest came out alright. Could have been better, but it I guess you can only do so much with Pheonix Lord "Enhancements" (Jain'Zar was kind enough to model). It'll work though.

With the wings on, the model does get a bit top-heavy. Makes me very glad I added a few lead fishing weights underneath the base to keep it reasonably stable.

Still to finish for my first 500 points:
5 guardians and a heavy weapon platform to paint
5 dire avengers to assemble, convert, and paint.

Getting close...

Thanks for the replies :D Sorry about the long gaps between updates :(

I've been a little busy with work and school lately, but I got some more goodies done. Namely, I finished off my unit of Guardians completely now, and I got the Dire Avengers assembled and ready to paint. On modification I haven't gotten pics of is the fishing weights I added to the bottoms of all the infantry models, metal and plastic. Helps keep them standing up on sloped terrain that happens sometimes.

I'll be doing a paint sheme similar to the banshees for the Avengers, but rather then Enchanted Blue / Ice Blue coloring for the armor plates, it'll be Space Wolf Grey / Ghostly Grey. I liked the overall setup of the banshee scheme as well as the general colorations, so I'm just tweaking them a bit to help the Avengers pop out on thier own. I'm doing some form of blue and purple on every type of unit to give the corsair sisterhood a common undertone. I think the blue tinge to the greys I'm going to be using will work well with it. We shall see.

Once the Avengers are done, I'll be finished with my First 500. Next after that for the 1000 point level I'm planning to add:
Farseer on jetbike (planning to convert off a female base and add some sculpted runes to both rider and bike, and use the halberd from the dire avenger exarch for the singing spear / witchblade)
1 Vyper
1 War Walker
1 Wave Serpent
1 more Banshee
3 more Avengers, including the exarch

The star of that show will most deffinately be the farseer, though I'm looking forward to toying with the Vyper as well :).

the scheme looks great, simple but effective conversions and a fun project. you should try to get your hands on that female farseer that someone made and casted a while back.

Actually, I'm planning on just using a regular jetbike pilot and converting it myself. Use a guardian-style front torso, then add the runes on top. Robes never struck me as looking good for someone zipping around at extreme speed on a jetbike. I think the GW warlock on bike conversion just looks silly :P

For the runes... I'll be making clay castings of both the figure (torso / legs, maybe arms and shoulders) as well as the big front dome of the bike. Carve the runes into the casting, and use that as a mold to greenstuff the runes back onto bike and rider. Similar to how I've been doing the chest conversions with greenstuff casts. Chavant NSP Hard is the clay on hand, so it ought to be sturdy enough to get the job done fine.

Well, I've been a bit distracted lately. Got started into Warmachine, got KotoR II, got sucked back into WoW... But I have not abandoned my girls in purple and blue!

Finally polished off my first Dire Avenger and I like her. May go a little easier on the lightish colors for the armor plate next time, but overall reasonably satisfied.

Also nearly done constructing my converted Farseer on jetbike. Went for a guardian-style look with a few extras rather then the GW standard robes. I just think robes would be terribly terribly silly to wear on a jetbike screaming through the air at extremely high velocities. Like trying to drag race with your parachute already deployed. And attached to you. That'll be the subject of the next update, I imagine. Just waiting on greenstuff to cure before moving to the next step in construction.

Well, ye ole farseer didn't take too long to finish curing, so here we go with some piccies!

I thought about magnetizing the arm to swap between an obvious sword and this polearm, but figured if I didn't want to spend points on a singing spear, I'd just use "counts as" for this one. It'd be a real bear trying to rig the arms up to keep in pose with the magnet in the socket. I did magnetize the base though so it can be popped off for easy storage and transportation, but won't fall out from under if I just pick her up by the plumage.

I may go back and try to fill in and smooth over the greenstuff rune on the bike, but that's still smooth enough that paint could make it look just fine I think.

<cough cough> <hack wheeze>

Wow, ok, um, sorry about that. Work, School, a WoW addiction, and a bit of burnout can really make for a delay between updates. But there is hope! We just got a Hobby Town back in the area and they're hosting an Escalation League. These really help me keep on it for building an army, and I am, of course, entering with my Sisters of Twilight here. To this end, I've been picking up the brush, the glue, and the hobby knife once again and got back into gear after a months-long lapse.

I've just this evening finished painting my initial squad of Dire Avengers for my 500 point army:

I'm pretty happy with these girls. They came out good, in my opinion. Tweaking my jewel-painting a little and I think it's looking a tad better.

And, since the first batch is finally completely done, I get to take a pic of the whole lot!

And nice close-up around my little miss Saelynnin, the Autarch of my army of daring do.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c276/Xardian1/Eldar/1st-500-zoomed.jpg

The next 500 points is already mostly constructed, and has even had a smidge of painting started. The only item left to finish constructing is the second Wave Serpent.

The new additions will include:
1 War Walker
1 Wave Serpent for the Dire Avengers to cruise about in
1 more Banshee
3 more Dire Avengers, one of which is the Exarch with power weapon and shimmer shield
1 Farseer on Jetbike
1 Vyper

plus a smattering of markers and tokens. If all goes well and I can keep in the groove, The army could be completely done and ready to go to tournaments in about 4 months time. (we're going 1 month per 500 points in the league)

Like the nice bold scheme.

A few of those Eldar ladies seem to be a little too "Endowed", i always imagine them having smaller ones, due to the lithe, thin forms.

But excellent work nonetheless.

The Autarch is the main one with perhaps a bit much up top. But all of them, including her, got chests essentially molded from existing eldar minis. The Autarch got Jain'Zar's chest, and it's a bit larger then one realises when you remove them from the shadow of Jain'Zar's huge hairdo. :)

Little update on the Escalation league:

Turns out I wasn't able to use the Autarch for the first 500 points due to the league using modified 40K in a Flash rules. No 3 wound models allowed. So, punted to Plan B and replaced her with a 6th Banshee and an EML armed Vyper.

Current record at week 2 of the league's games: 2 Solid Victories, 0 losses, 0 draws.

The army's mobility is really a boon. Both adversaries have been flavors of Space Marine. I'm looking forward to fighting something else. Of course, about 60-75% of the league is marines, so I guess I'll have to get used to smurf-bashing. I hope someone goes nidzilla though just so I can see if I can beat the uber-tourney-list-of-I-have-more-monsters-then-you-can-possibly-kill-in-6-turns army

The vyper is assembled and magnetized. I'll have to get some pics to post, but since it's already spray-primed black, I'll probably wait until it's painted.

One tip I can now give about magnetizing flight bases... Don't try to use little magnets in place of the little stick bit on top that previously tried to support the model. They'll just break off. Super glue, Green Stuff, Brown Stuff, or all of them together... doesn't matter, it'll break. To really make it work well seems to require widening the hole for the flight base in the model so it can encompass the wider width of the main support shaft, then just stick a magnet on that to match the main shaft's diameter. Since the magnet joint isn't trying to support any wieght on the sides, it doesn't snap off any more. My Wave Serpent was already magnetized this way and you can see that in the pics earlier in the thread for refference. It's worked beautifully from day 1.

To quote what a friend said he heard from a GW rep (how convoluted is that?): "There are 2 types of flight bases: those that have broken, and those that haven't broken yet".

Dear Ma Hunkel

The walker is lovely. The stones make me happy and all the textures everywhere also make me happy. I'm not just saying that because I'm about to say that the autarch looks like a man with breasts. :(

He could actually be a woman with big arms and hips, like if the eldar were chainsmoking farmers with adenoids. I guess that's intimidating, actually. Have you seen this? It's old enough, anyway (http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=1264&st=30)

And with eldar, isn't that the same difference? ;)

I do like that work done for the figure. Very subtle, and very fitting. Also a whole lot of extra work. The thing with Eldar is I'd have to do that same thing to every model because, aside from banshees, all of them look that way. Even the normal GW-made female guardians. The extra pads on the arms and legs enhance the muscled look, as does the big scary face mask and broad shoulder pads. Banshee armor has it's own tweaks to the styling, mostly on the abdomen and shoulders that help suggest an hourglass figure. The Autarch mini has a heavy wrap around that same area though, making it a little harder to work with.

If I had the time and ambition, I would love to tweak all the proportions, but I'd basically need to do a complete re-sculpt of everything but the banshees. Yes, the autarch has the same body type as all the guardians and dire avengers and warwalker pilots...

Now, I am thinking of doing a complete sculpt for a few chaos minis. There's nothing even close to what I'm wanting to do there, while the eldar at least kinda fit the bill since it's mostly manly girls and girly men anyway.

There are very few threads I read from post 1 to the end. This one has been really good. Ihe Army you've put together looks fantastic and it looks like it works too.
