View Full Version : Epic minatures in AI

Hey just wondering if it woud be a good idea to but some Epic minatures for use as scenary/objectives/defences in AI? My local game store has a selection of 2nd-hand Epic minatures (mostly SM, CSM Ork and Eldar tanks, with a lot of infantry bases too). If I were to purchase some of these would they be able to play an active role in the game? I don't have the rulebook (yet) you see...

I understand that the game is all about air combat but is there scenario for example where you have to attack an enemy convoy? Or bomb a supply base?

The models are quite cheap and therefore quite appealing, especially when I think about how much money I'll be handing over to FW! :p

Yep, i'm in a epic buying frenzy at the moment :D Various bombing missions require ground forces as targets, ie 5 tanks, or an airfield with control tower and grounded planes, etc.
Some missions require you to bomb two bunkers that have 4 hit points each, or a large building or bridge with 8 hit points each. Personally I'm going to use superheavy tanks (shadowswords) as bunker equivalents, and a damaged warlord titan (hey, it already has an 8 hit counter on a clicky base) as a large building target. Also, infantry stands can be used as transport markers in transport deployment missions
Basically, the book gives you a list of suggested models to use as bombing targets and what hit points they are woth in game but the models you use can be as varied as you like so long as they make sense. Forgeworld and specialist games sell packs of mission objectives for example which contain litle radar stations and missile silos, etc. You'll aslo want to buy or make some scenery bombing objectives.

Got the Epic stuff. Haven't even ordered the actual AI stuff yet!

I've 18 Ork gunwagons. The only thing really orky about them are the big death-roller things on the front. I'm going to remove them and reposition the guns so they point skywards. They'd then do for Imperial or Ork flak tanks.
Got 3 land raiders and 3 rhinos with some tactical squads to be target models for my planned Imp navy wing to protect. Some ork battlewagons will act as targets to be destroyed!

Oh and I got some bases of Chaos squats! Not sure how I'll use them until I start collecting a chaos wing but I just couldn't refuse!!! :D

haha cool

Well, you have plentiful objectives there.
I would convert 4 gunwagons to be Flak Wagons ( 4 barrel big shoota looking guns facing skyward) and 4 to be 'Eavy Flak Cannons ( One large barrel cannon facing skywards) and keep the other ten as objectives for bombing (you will probably only need 5 at a time, so that gives you the opportunity to paint 2 lots differently!!). The imperial Hydra emplacement models are basically too cool looking not to get them if you want them, and pretty cheap at 3 for 5 quid (same with all of the AA).

Land Raiders and Rhinos will be nice too, if you have 6 stands of marines, keep them as troop markers incase you decide to buy a thunderhawk gunship as their transport capacity is 6!

as for the chaos squats... :P

Before you get the game, i'd also reccomend making some damage markers (http://z8.invisionfree.com/Airspace/index.php?showtopic=230) and using the same painting principle, using cotton wool balls to make explosion markers to denote seriously damaged ground targets (I built my ground explosion markers by brushing pva glue on a cotton wool ball, let it dry, spray it black, glue it to a clear round flying base bottom, then painting it as described in the article).

Using these little extras, and nicely painted terrain and markers, really enhances the game.

A definite YES on this one.

Given that most of the Epic range in the AA section is just fine, I see no reason to buy models that are more expensive or harder to get (ordering at FW can be tricky). I'm also of the opinion, that more variety is always a good thing.

At the moment all my AA units are Epic models, namely Flak Wagons for Orks and Fire Prisms for Eldar. I also use them, as proposed, as objectives, namely a destroyed Ork Stompa with Boss and retinue for a Search&Rescue mission. I also actually use some Epic flyers (both Orks and Eldar), first to add even more Chaos to the look of my Orks, and second just because I like the old Eldar models.

The GW/SG Epic minis are actually more expensive for someone in Australia than the FW minis.

Funny, huh?

(The SG Epic minis are so ugly though...)

Hot foot from Melta Pants thread I stagger, panting, into the room.

I have a similar question-Do you use any of the Epic fliers? Not sure about scale & stuff as I'll get the book when I go to pick up figures. Are all the rules & minis FW or can some SG stuff be used.

Ta in advance.

the SG epic fliers are the same aicraft as the forgeworld ones, but are tiny and ugly models in comparison to forgeworld larger more detailed resin ones. you can use them but its just up to you! the ork fightas and fighta bommers from the epic range still look particularly cool for AI. you will just need to put them on AI clicky bases (avaliable seperately).

Some things are only avaliable as SG models right now such as ork flakwagon AAA.

Ta mate. Will hopefully be picking it up over the next month or two.First of all to trawl through decades of old models to see what's left of my old Epic stuff to see if I can save a few shillings.

Yeah I agree the Ork Fighta Bombaz are the only SG models I would use (Other than the Ork Landa, which has no official rules, but I've been finding really run to play with my unofficial ones.)
