View Full Version : Orc & Gobbo army for Nemesis Crown

Hey all... my first project log on Warseer, so I thought I'd do something simple...

I want to use my Orc and Gblin army for the Nemesis Crown campaign, but unfortunately have very little of it painted... With difficulties such as my coursework needing to be done more than ever and my step-dad hogging the painting table to do all the commission work he's been given, I have very little time to do painting of my own...

Though most of my battles are only going to be 1,000pts, I think this would be a great opportunity to get my army painted, so here's what I've got...

finished
1 Grimgor Ironhide
1 Boar Chariot
1 Night Goblin Big Boss
1 Forest Goblin Big Boss

started
10 Black Orcs + Command
19 Orc Boyz w/ 2 choppas + Command
1 Savage Orc Shaman on boar

undercoated
1 Night Goblin Shaman
20 Orc Boyz w/ choppas and shields + Command

Everything else (stille grey and silver)
18 Orc Boyz w/ choppas and shields + Command
2 X 20 Night Goblins w/ spears and shields + command
20 Night Goblins w/ bows + command
10 Spider Riders w/ spears and shields + command
1 Black Orc Warboss
1 Black Orc Big Boss on Boar
1 Orc Big Boss on Boar
1 Orc Big Boss Banner Bearer
1 Common Troll
1 Night Goblin Big Boss

I won't be able to get work started until Sunday as I'm up my dad's this weekend and I don't have any pica atm either... but i will soon...

the best way to get it done is a reward system. whenever i'm sitting down to paint an army, the first thing i want to do is paint up all the awsome leaders, or smaller units, leaving the greuling blocks of infantry for last. Do your infantry first, its the toughest and most important to get done first (core army). for each regiment, reward yourself with a character or chariot or something. once you get the initial core infantry done, branch out to your other slots, but keep the same pace and it'll be done before you know it.

Merceus
23-03-2007, 22:34
Cheers :) I've tried doing that before ad it never seems to work...I'm gonna try and get all 60 gobbos done first, should be a simple case of drybrushing and just a few highlights... plus all the other stuff...

TanithScout
23-03-2007, 23:26
huh, well i suppose we all don't paint the same way. anyway, generally rewarding yourself with something is a good idea at getting motivated, even if the reward is just finally having something painted lol. best of luck, and im looking forward to pics. i really would love to start a night goblin army for fantasy, or any ork related army for fantasy, but i think i'd lose my mind painting the blocks of greenies

Merceus

I know... I try to add variation by making each faction a different colour...

Orcs = Blue
Black orcs = Black
Savage orcs = Yellow
Goblins = Red
Night Gblins = Purple
Forest Goblins = Orange

With the exception of black orcs, I only use the colours in muted tones on some of the clothes and also on symbols like shields and standards, also for tattoos on savage orcs and forest goblins... the rest is just green, black and silver...

almost forgot a couple of characters! fully painted conerted forest goblin big boss and a white dwarf subscription night goblin boss (still silver)... oh yeah, and wurrzag, just use him as a savage orc shaman now...

Merceus

I'm going to make this project work by using logic (and paint), I'm going to begin by painting the 1,000pt list i wrote the other day... I don't have it wit me atm, but I think it contained...

- Black Orc Big Boss on boar
- 2 Night Goblin Big Bosses
- All 60 of my Night Goblins
- All 19 Boyz w/ 2 choppas
- 20 Boyz w/ choppas and shields

The rest is all guessing

- 10 Spider Riders
- 10 Black Orcs
- the Boar Chariot

So I'm going to start with that and then spread out from there... I'll also finish off the models I've started fist and finish with the 'grey and silvers.'

Another problem is all my other projects... 3 40K Daemon Prince conversions need to be finished and painted, 5 Feral Space Marines would like to be painted, the rest of my tyranid army needs painting, my Space marine army needs painting, 9 Converted 40K Chaos Lords need painting, my Horde of Khorne needs painting and a chaos dwarf army converted from BfSP needs to be converted and painted. I also have plans to get the FW avatar for eldar and make it icy... so I'm unfortunately screwed atm...

Merceus
25-03-2007, 15:07
Right... I'm going to be able to start work tonight (finally) and will begin by finishing off the unit of sem-painted Boyz... then I'm going to move on to the goblins and do at least one full unit. I want to do a minimum of two, and if I'm going to do two I may as well do the third... so that's 60 gobbos all at once... not too much trouble *wimper*

I also need to repaint a couple of bits on the chariot... I did some of the hair red... this was before I had decided on a colour scheme... so now I'm going to have to repaint the red bits blue after reattaching the hair on the banner pole which managed to snap off...

Okay... so I finally got the camera working... here's a few pics of what I've done so far... I've also got more boyz primed then I first thought... please don't be harsh on the highlighting... that many models makes me nervous, so I only did a few layers...

From left to right: Spear Gobbos + Big Boss, Boyz w/ shields, Boar Chariot, Black Orcs, Common Troll, Boyz w/ shields + BSB, Black Orc Warboss (Mega Bean), Orc Big Boss on Boar, Gobbo Archers + Shaman, Boyz w/ 2 Choppas + Black Orc Big Boss (Grimgor), Black Orc Big Boss on Boar, Savage Orc Shaman on Boar (Wurrzag), Forest Gobbo Big Boss, Spider Riders and Spear Gobbos + Big Boss.

My almost complete Boyz unit + Grimgor model... unit needs rebasing as well.

A more recent model, my Gobbo Big Boss from BfSP.

And finally, my (somewhat out of focus) Black Orc Warboss, dubbed Mega Bean!

Merceus

GOd Damn Plasticard! I just bought a big sheet of it today and am now stuck creating a big fat chariot for Mega Bean... grr...

Merceus
28-03-2007, 20:10
I swear there's some greater power trying to stop me from finishing this army! As soon as I start painting an army, its model count increases ten-fold! I just got gifted 12 Savage Orcs, 2 Savage Orc Shamans, Mad Dok Grotsnik (to be converted), A Grot Slaver (to be converted), and a Killa Kan and Autarch (those 2 are for something else)... But thats a unit of Savage Orcs and 4 more characters!!

No more proper updates yet... still working on that damned chariot! Its huge though... maybe not huge, but its bigger than the standard Boar Chariot... pics later...

Just stay focused on the original goal, the 1000 point army. I have so many miniatures that I find myself getting distracted a lot, but recently I started "trying" to discipline myself to paint only a few things at once. Even if you are working on something outside of your 1000 point army, at least try and do a little bit on your army during each painting session. Good luck, and we will try to keep you motivated and focused.

Merceus
29-03-2007, 18:52
cheers... I guess the first step is putting some of my models to be painted on the painting table... I'll just do the front rank of my first Boyz Unit for the moment :)

30-03-2007, 00:02
I know, I'm terrible for that... I just blacked all the red on my Boyz and added the basecoat for the blue to some of their clothes... should have them finished by tommorrow night (that's the first rank, not the whole unit)...

adreal
30-03-2007, 06:42
I like the size force you've got there, but just stay focused on your 1000pts goal, but with that many points it seems hard, still your grimgore looks awesome man, and mega bean should look sweet in his chariot

Merceus
30-03-2007, 12:48
cheers :D... I know I said I should be able to get the first rank finished by tonight... but my step-dad has the day off and is hogging the painting table for his commission work... so maybe half done today and finished tommorrow...

Merceus

Almost finished the first rank of Boyz, just need to Static Grass the bases and put something onto the standard (not sure what yet)

Merceus, I gotta say you are really great at conversions. Amazing what just a few minor pieces will do to a model. I particularly like the spear/axe of the chariot rider.

Those Orc Boyz look really great so far, keep it up.

Merceus
31-03-2007, 15:26
:D cheers... anyone have any ideas what I could do for the symbol on the standard? Cos I haven't got a clue...

adreal
01-04-2007, 01:06
You could just do a regular skull motif, granted boring but hey it does work and fairly easy, you could do the evil sun, they always look cool. Checks or dags are never out of fassion on Orc models, check out some 40K gliffs and motifs, pick the one you like best, AFAIK fantasy just use the skulls.

Also I love the slaver/shaman, looks pretty boss.

bluebugs

the shaman is Amazing

Merceus
01-04-2007, 14:01
Cheers for the comments on the Shaman, I still feel he's missing something though... besides paint that is...

ANyways, I did a skull symbol on the banner in the end... so here's the finished first rank and close up of the banner...

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9792/boyz1rank1finishedgq8.jpg
I like the fuzziness of the static grass in this pic

http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/9642/boyz1standardec5.jpg
I don't, however, like the fuzziness of this pic... oh well...

I'm getting started on the next rank soon... they're already on the table so I won't have to worry about my laziness stopping me from doing them... and I also went back to my chariot and repainted the red bits blue... it'll be done soon, just need to blue up the crew...

Merceus
01-04-2007, 15:04
hmm... I seem to have come to a sudden stop... I can't seem to paint... I keep thinking about what I'm going to do with Grotsnik... and I haven't got a clue...

mousekiller
01-04-2007, 16:55
Looks great. Only thing that seems off is the black hafts of the weapons and the banner (the hafts on the banner, the banner design itself is really well done). Are you going to do anything with these, or did you leave them black to match the color scheme?

Keep em coming...

Merceus
01-04-2007, 19:00
I'm leaving em black for the moment... I don't really want to make them any other colour, not even brown or dark grey or anything... I've never been very good with knowing what to do with hafts though... I'll leave em black for the moment and then do something when I can come up with a scheme that'll work (hopefully)...

Almost finished the second rank... just need to highlight the black and do the eyes and bases... shouldn't take too long... May even get started on the third rank by tonight... doubtful....

As I mentioned earlier, I'm now on Easter Holiday so have time off... but because my GCSE's are coming up in a month or two I'm being forced to go into school on several days of the holiday for revision... so tommorrow, Tuesday and Thursday won't be very fast paced... or paced in any way...

And cheers for all the support so far guys... tis great :D

EDIT: I've also discovered that I have somewhat of a fetish for painting Orc Teef :wtf: ... its really fascinating how easy they are and the look is just so consuming to me for some reason... kinda creeping myself out with it though...

Merceus
01-04-2007, 21:06
okay then... I've finished the chariot crew and second rank sans static grass... the question now is, should I glue the crew into the chariot or have them removeable?

(pics soon)

Merceus
01-04-2007, 22:47
I eventually pinned the chariot's crew so they could be removed for transport and wouldn't jiggle about during battle... I've also static grassed the second rank of boyz... ta da...

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/7185/boyz1rank2completead0.jpg
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/7327/chariotfinishedoy3.jpg

I also managed to squeeze in enough time to finish the Beanmobile... or at least most of it... I still need crew, chains, boars and paint... I'm also converting a 120X80mm base for it...

Looking really nice, I'd love to face these across the table with my dwarfs.

One thing though, maybe some matt varnish on the chariot? It's looking rather shiny at the moment.

Looking great mate. Only advice I would give would be to bring the chariot wood grain up a bit more, really make it stand out. Recipe I use is: Scorched brown heavily dry brushed over black, pick out the grains that I want with Bestial Brown, then begin highlighting my bestial brown lines with snake bite leather, then Desert Yellow, and finally Kommando Khaki. I think it will bring that chariot out really nicely and doesn't take an incredibly large amount of time (should take about an hour or so).

Keep em coming mate, you are finishing these at a surprising rate of speed and to a great quality. I am still working on my second rank of 5 Night Goblins that I started over 7 days ago.

Hey! Leave my smurf alone! Hmm… aw dammit! Why’d you have to say that! I can’t stop thinking about it now!

I keep thinking about the shininess and then forget about it… I’ll see what I can do…

I’ve had a little help… as you can see from the original pics, I had already done the skin and metal on em… but everything else was one day’s work… I quite surprised at myself actually…

How light does that paint scheme come out… I don’t really want anything to vibrant or bright or noticeable… it might detract from the Orcs a bit (cos they’re the fun part… so you know)

No painting done today sadly as of school… so probably none tomorrow either… should get some done Wednesday though :D

Merceus
03-04-2007, 17:06
My mate said it was a ridiculous idea anyway... smurfs wear white hats (and red)... so yeah, I'll be sure not to tell anyone, just to keep the not-so-imposing imposingness of them flowing...

Should be able to start that third rank today...

Check out the Mousekiller's Army WIP in this section (I think it is over on page 2 now) to see what that recipe looks like.

Merceus
04-04-2007, 13:53
cool... will check it out when I have more time... like in a few seconds...

Almost finished the third rank, just need to do the static grass... but my step-dad's completely taken the painting table again, oh well...

The fourth and final (yay! :D) rank is going to take a bit longer as, unlike the other ranks, I haven't done the metal or finished the skin on them yet...

Merceus
04-04-2007, 16:53
right, the third rank is now complete...

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/2121/boyz1rank3completeat6.jpg

...here's what I have of the fourth (and final :D:D) rank so far...

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9735/boyz1rank4startee8.jpg

...since the pic was taken, I've finished the skin... hopefully I can get them finished before I fall asleep tonight...

Merceus
04-04-2007, 19:34
I've unfortunately not gotten much further since my last update other than the basecoat for the metal on two of the boyz... although the amount of goblins I have has just hit me full on... there's 60 + 2 unpainted characters... and I've just primed them all with less than a quarter of a can...

http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/4247/61nightgoblinszr5.jpg

I also have a rock for the Beanmobile to sit on... I can tell that wasn't the news you were hoping for...

Merceus
06-04-2007, 11:31
well... after a short break in painting (I'm not happy about that) I have finished the final rank of Boyz

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/8915/boyz1rank4completels0.jpg

And in turn that means I have finished the Boyz unit... I think this is the first time I've finished a fantasy unit of more than 1 model in size...

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3097/boyz1completecb3.jpg

Sadly I'm going up my dad's this weekend... so no painting until Sunday night (or if I can get any done before I leave tonight)... Next on the list are the goblins... which I'm gonna try and do in one big group insead of rank at a time (or even unit at a time)... should be interesting...

Merceus
06-04-2007, 16:38
Managed to get some of the painting done on the goblins before going up my dad's, so here's what I've got so far... there's still another shade of drybrushing for the purple on the goblins, but that'll be done after I've blacked out all the non-purple bits... the characters are finished on the purple side of things as they were highlighted by hand instead...

http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/9274/nightgoblinspurpleonlyjb4.jpg

I quite liked how the big bosses cloak came out... pic is a bit fuzzy though...

That unit of Orc Boyz is very well done. Congratulations on completing it, they look very nice. Those gobbos are very purple... did you use a purple primer or did you just paint the purple over everything?

Coming along nicely... more more more...

Merceus
06-04-2007, 17:56
I just painted purple over everything... Tank Brushes are my friends :D... they won't be as purple when they're done...

It's just the hoods and underrobes that will be completely purple... like the BFSP Big Boss on page 1... the shields and weapons will most likely be black and silver... as will the main part of the robes... and obviously the faces and hands are going to be green...

Merceus
09-04-2007, 13:40
I've gotten 13 of the gobbos blacked in along with the characters... so I just have another 47 more to go... then I need to drybrush grey and paint and ink metallic... then I do skin and eyes and teeth... not too much on my list then... *cries*

Merceus
10-04-2007, 14:45
damn it! Those BfSP archers are ****** gits to black in... and the bright light from the uncurtainable window is messing with me... won't be painting until later tonight sadly

Merceus
11-04-2007, 16:12
I managed to finish blacking in all the gobbos! *yay*... I found that the easiest way to do that was to deprive myself of sleep until they were done... so I missed breakfast and lunch catching up on sleep... but the gobbos are ready for the next step...

11-04-2007, 18:45
Man, that is a lot of gobbos, you definitely win the patience award.

Merceus
11-04-2007, 19:17
hehe... yeah, I've been told I have the patience of a Saint... and at the moment I'm very likely to snap at the first person who sneezes near, especially after the trouble I had with my Daemon armature last night...

I want to have these guys finished by the end of the week, otherwise I'll be stuck in school and too busy to do it... I still need to drybrush most of em (already done one rank), then do the skin... then the wepaons, and finally teeth and eyes... then I have to base them... and I also have the characters to do as well...

hurray for stupid ideas! :D

jullevi
12-04-2007, 12:02
The orcs are looking great, but night goblins seem to have some mold lines left.

Removing the moldlines from skull pass worth of goblins is one hell of a job, but well worth it.

Merceus
15-04-2007, 20:25
@ Jullevi: Cheers :D But in all honesty... mold lines have never bothered me... they hardly show up when the model is painted and you look at it in person... I don't see why people are so mental about them... I could, however, understand a little bit of dislike, but not as much as people tend to show... they just don't bother me...

Anyway, sorry for not updating for a while... my ebob puppets came the other day and I've been busy ruinging them with Green Stuff... ok, so its not that bad... its just not good yet... but thats besides the point, the goblins have been frybrushed grey and I've done the basecoat for the skin on about half of them (just under). Sorry for no pics either... the batteries in the camera died and I'm recharging them at the moment... more news later...

Trilbydude@Dragon
02-05-2007, 23:47
Ah, FINALLY, a Black Grimgor. Also, those Frybrushed goblins sound good. not chicken-fried, I hope ;D. hmm... how's the bean-mobile coming along? It has moi moi potential.

Hey man really like the work. But im a bit curious. Im thinking of painting my ng's purple aswell. Im just wondering how did the unit turn out?

Merceus
19-05-2007, 16:28
crap... right... yeah... erm... crap!

I haven't done a thing to my Army since probably before my last update! need to do that...

@ athedrivein: The unit looks fins so far... not too light, not too dark... It came out how I wanted it too as well... They will look somewhat like the Big Boss on page 1 when they're done... glad you like, cheers :)

EDIT: and I promise! When I get home I will be taking updated photos of the Gobbos and then getting some more painting done!

Nuther EDIT: thanks to the 30 competitions I have gained another 7 Night Goblins...:wtf: yeah I know... but this brings it (along with the characters) to a nice round number of 70...

The units of boys looks really great! The conversions on some of your models are also very cool

Hoods? You mean the hoods on the Night goblins? Maybe that's why they look a little Night Goblinish... hmm... cheers :)
