View Full Version : Hordes: Legion of Everblight. An 'evolving' army project.

03-04-2007, 08:13
Hello and welcome to all.

My name is luke, 26, and live in Melbourne- Australia. For a long time I have taken inspiration from these forums, now it's payback. My first project on these forums will be a 'Legion of Everblight' army for privateer press' game 'Hordes'. It is the feral cousin of their more popular game, warmachine, and has lots of nasty beasties to tear up your opponents.

I am doing this purely for motivational reasons but if anything I have learned over the last few years can help anyone, great, if you're just here for a browse then feel free to throw out any criticism you think might help.

Mission Statement: Finished 500pt legion army within 3 months.Pinned, based, painted and sealed is the order of the day.

1 Warlock
1 Carnivean heavy warbeast
1 Teraph light warbeast
1 Seraph light warbeast
2 Units of warmongers, three a piece.

This is not a final list, but you will see these mini's finished in this log.
My paint scheme is codex but I will be using a much simpler method.....lets hope it looks ok......
Bases will be a snow theme.
Paints used are mostly citadel.
Pinning will be used in most every joint as this will be a gaming army and must be able to withstand a bump or two.

I am starting with the big guys, warbeasts. First up is 1 carnivean, 1 seraph, and 1 Teraph.

The Seraph has had a minor 'upgrade'. I like the look of these metal orc wyvern wings much more than the original style. Coldn't have been an easier job as they fit straight into place. Getting them well secured and pinned was a drama, but green stuff saved the day again. A bit of finishing work is needed to fill some gaps and apply the right texture.

The teraph has been 80% assembled and pinned. Tail and head will be attached and then painting can begin. The rock on the base is just cork tiles broken up.
The carnivean is about to encounter a foe of unbelievable power...industrial strength paint stripper. I'll remove the 'ugly' paint and start fresh.

One unit of warmongers is assembled and one is untouched. These will be pinned and assembled in the next update.

So, tomorrow should be:

pinned warmongers pics
clean wing joins on seraph pics
stripped bare carnivean pics
teraph head/tail pinned on pics

Well, any questions or feedback is welcome and if you think I have left anything out of my opening post then let me know. I just wanted to get started so may have forgot some stuff.

Cheers mates

Nice stuff mate, I'm just getting into menoth for warmachine.

I hope to draw much inspiration from this thread, an provide some encouragement for you as well. (Nothing like a lack of posters, as I well know  :D )

Being a Tyranid player I've taken an immediate liking to these miniatures. Hope the painting goes well and I look forward to seeing your color scheme!

Thanks guys

Menoth is my army for warmachine too. I have a lot of problems with the whites in the menoth scheme but I keep trying.

There is a definite tyranid feel to some of these beasties. The colour scheme will be a cold blue>white skin with dark brown/black on the spiny growths. I don't think I will be able to do it justice, but my plan is to hit the skin with a white base coat and a mix of glazes and washes to create the depth. Easy and quick, but not the pro finish some of the guys around here can manage. The spiny growths will be easy but not effective unless handled with care.

Thanks for the posts.

Yay Teraphs, awesome models!
Boo Seraphs, the spam, it burns us precious!

I'm happy to see a PP log here, that's great. Good luck with the metally joy (I hates it, but the Cryx and Khador and Skorne is so good to me :D)

03-04-2007, 13:01
lol, yeah the seraph spam does burn a lot of stuff up !

Seriously though, I find one is pretty weak by itself, and they are VERY soft targets so not too much ouchy for the other guy. I think 4 shredders would fit much better in my list anyways and will prob clean them up for this army too.

Progress report-Seraph joins cleaned and model primed white.
Carnivean stripped and cleaned, ready to be reassembled
Teraph head and 1 upper arm attached
Warmongers...looking at me with a needy look in their eyes...

The Legion stuff are the only Hordes releases that really catch my fancy, but I really do like the dragonspawn designs. You've done a great job converting off the hideous wings on the seraph too, good choice ;)

Look forward to progress on these monsters :skull:

Thanks for the posts.
The original wings on the seraph are super ugly, not sure what they were going for with that. The wyvern wings are large, but I believe the seraphs wings should be more dragon-like.

OK, day2 and still on track...amazing.

Warmongers got pinned before assembly.

Teraph fully assembled and ready to prime.

Carnivean got stripped back, pinned and assembled. Little bit of paint in the cracks to get off.

The seraph joins were filled and the model was assembled and primed. I'm using it's old base to make painting easier.

The whole crew was then well on way.

Get some paint out tomorrow and lay down a clean, smooth white primer/base on the skin of all the beasts. The warmongers will get a black primer coat just cause theres more armour than skin.

If any of the local experts can help along the way, i'd greatly appreciate it. A lot of the work around here is so impressive.

great to see a project log on Hordes, I play WM but have yet to take the plunge with Hordes as I cant make up my mind which faction, will soldier on with my Khador and Cryx in the meantime.

05-04-2007, 04:05
Yeah, not all the warmachine players took hordes on board. It is just as good as warmachine and provides a good alternative to the old "warcaster/fury" system.

If I had to recommend a faction, considering your WM choices, it would probably be trollbloods just cause they're the most different . They are pretty unique and have a 'very' good reputation as a force to be reckoned with. They have lots of buffs (like menoth) and even some half decent ranged units. You'll have the high toughness of your khador army, and even some nice 12" charging balls of muscle more commonly known as "dire trolls".......ouch.

There is no Space Marine syndrome in hordes either, meaning that whichever army takes your fancy you won't be accused of jumping on the bandwagon.

Khador is super-rock-hard and Cryx is as sneaky as any assassin should be. Thats a good combo of armies, get bored with one style you can mix it right up and take a whole different army next time.

The khador "behemoth" is a kick ass model and nigh indestructible. My poor little "avatar" needs a lot of help from his menite buddies whenever he faces off with one of those things. The carnivean however, on a good day, can tear anything apart in one round - even the behemoth...oooohhh,aaaaahhh.

Todays update is on way.

Excellent, cant wait too see these guys all finished, always enjoy a non gw thread.
Nicely presented as well.

Would it be at all possible to get a pic of the middle warmonger next to an infantry model of GWs? I have plans for it and would like to know the size.

I like how this log is going and have always been a fan of the Legion so I shall watch this intently.

Thanks guys for the comments, only good news I've heard today. Seriously though, it really helps in keeping this project moving.

Khrangar, I will PM you with a link to some scaled pics of the middle warmonger asap. I'll scale it with a marine if that works for you? or are you thinking fantasy? I'll do both.

I didn't post yesterday but have progressed onto a lot of priming and terrain building. I will post my legion themed terrain at the same time because it will be an important part of the project.

I'll also get some test models for my "all purpose skin wash".
Pic's on way!

OK, 3rd update. Day 4.

Sorry about the pics, im still learning and get a few dodgy ones.
First up is.....

A group pic. Screaming please paint me!

The female character is a legion warlock. She is possibly the least impressive miniature but is maybe the most flexible on the battlefield. Many different lists would work well with her. The metals got some attention, just some boltgun/mithril silver washed with purple/black/brown. It's very rough at the moment.
The white and green guys are a couple of "warmachine", army of menoth miniatures. Coming along all right, 50% finished, but I never finish anything because i just can't get the look i desire. Painting/shading white is an absolute mystery to me, but im trying to get better.
The little blue guy was supposed to be my first test wash but.........it went more than a little wrong. Wrong colour, wrong mix, wrong everything. But I'm on to something else now, heres hoping.

Warmongers progressing, got some boltgun on three of them.

Teraph primed

Im really looking forward to getting these mini's onto the table.

So, aiming for next post in 24. See ya then.
