View Full Version : Need help with 960 points of Orcs & Goblins

I need some serious help coming up with a list for a tournament I plan to attend, since I have used my Orcs & Goblins only once so far.
That was in the first tournament held at my FLGS, which I was lucky enough to win (or rather, that my opponent was unlucky enough to lose).
These tournaments are linked in a campaign, meaning I'll have to field what survived the last time.
That is:

10 Orc Boyz [85]
(two choppas, standard bearer, musician)

5 Boar Boyz [124]
(standard bearer)

Giant [205]

That means I have 546 points left to spend and I have no idea what to spend them on.
Everybody else at the tournament will field 660 points and we will all play on the same table (I assume - the rules of this campaign aren't really clear as of now). I expect to see at least one Dwarfs army, one guy playing Empire and another playing High Elves.

What would you suggest I should field?

(I hope it's not considered rude that I don't offer a draft of my own at this point, but I think that my inexperience would make it useless.)

Wow, your giant survived? Kudos to your fine generalship on that one, mine likes to catch lances to the face.

Are you allowed to reinforce units? The choppa Orcs could use some more ladz. Maybe another equally sized unit of Orcs to join them?

A few small units of fast cav (wolves or spiders) to guard your flanks and harrass the opposition might called for. Plus, they'll give cover for the boar boyz.

Not sure what to suggest character wise, what with 4 armies on the field at once. Big Boss Orc for leadership and maybe a cheap gobbo shaman kitted out to stop magic mayhaps?

Yeah well, that's where the bad luck of my opponent comes into play.
He charged my giant with his unit of five knights, which also held his general. However, they were unable to inflict a single wound and were beaten by the giant over two turns.
I like the big feller.

I agree about the Orc Boyz. The unit started out with 20, but only 10 survived. It seems natural to bring them back to their original strength.

Some Wolf Riders seem to be a good suggestion, too, but I don't know whether they should get bows or spears or both.

Eh, five or six short bow shots are lucky to hit let alone wound and kill enemies. When my wolf boyz need to hit hard I give em spears so they can at least wound whatever they hit. I hesitate to say kill as even spear armed Gobbos are poor fighters but thats what the boar chariot/boar boyz/giant their escorting is for.

Im very curious how this four way battle goes Norton, sounds like a rough game. The three other armies can kick out a serious amount of firepower should they so decide and that'll be hard to over come.

Since I am allowed to field 300 points more than the others I'm the biggest target. I hope the others don't go after me exclusively.

I also hope that more people feel inclined to comment when I post a list of my own, so here goes:

Ork Big Boss [102]
(Light Armour, Martog's Best Basha, Enchanted Shield*]
*I only have the German armybook, so I don't know if this is the correct name. It's supposed to mean the shield from the list of common magic item that grants a 5+ armour save

Level 2 Orc Shaman [100]

23 Orc Boyz [176]
(two choppas, standard bearer, musician)

10 Archers [60]

20 Nightgoblins [64]
(with bows, musician)

6 Goblin Wolf Riders [84]
(spears, musician)

5 Boar Boyz [131]
(standard bearer, musician)

Goblin Spear Chukka [35]

Giant [205]

Total points: 957/960

I would go without the Arrchers but that is just a matter of opinion. Also I would like to take out the Giant, it is alot of points in one basket and a Bolt Thrower could skewer it fairly easily, just my opinion though.

The giant has to stay, and even if I could take him out I wouldn't want to.
He won the last game for me pretty much on his own.

Gobbo bows (or bows of any kind) probably won't do too much, even at this low a points level. Especially against dwarfs or h.elf cavalry.

I'd drop the archers, change your night goblins to HW+S and buy another chukka. Then put a fanatic into your night goblins. You could also drop a wolfrider and pump up you NG as big as possible.

This will give you the same amount of shooting (in effect at least, except your's will work against armour now, chukkas are worth their weight in gold), and another infantry unit to slog across into combat. Plus if you win this one you have troop types you'd be happy to take into another battle.

Something like:

Ork Big Boss [102]
(Light Armour, Martog's Best Basha, Enchanted Shield*]

Level 2 Orc Shaman [100]

23 Orc Boyz [176]
(two choppas, standard bearer, musician)

25 Nightgoblins [104] *A few more gobbos to make it combat worthy and a fanatic*
(with HW+S, musician, 1 fanatic)

5 Goblin Wolf Riders [71]
(spears, musician)

5 Boar Boyz [131]
(standard bearer, musician)

Goblin Spear Chukka [35] *They're two for one special so grab another*

Goblin Spear Chukka [35]

Giant [205]

Total points: 959/960

Seems like I'll better pick up another Chukka.

Do I put both the Boss and the Shaman with the Boyz?
I had planned to put the Boss in the unit and make them 6 wide, but I guess letting the Shaman run around on his own is too risky..
