View Full Version : Natedogg's Project Log of Stuff

I have decided to just make one big project log, instead of just having a bunch of small ones. I want to have a project log that has all my armies in it, not a bunch of smaller ones that might clog up the boards. My first army was Eldar which you can check out in my old Eldar Project Log here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51305). The armies that I have scheduled so far are my Ravenwing, Eldar, and Beasts of Chaos.

Okay, first I'll be working on my Ravenwing Army. Here's the stuff I have so far:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0819.jpg

The next priority is getting my Eldar army finished up. Here's what I still have to paint:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0829.jpg

The least important thing to work on is my Beasts of Chaos army. I don't have much, but I'll get a lot more when I'm finished with the other armies:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0830.jpg

So that's my plan, hopefully I'll be more succesful at finishing my Ravenwing army than I was at finishing my Eldar army. I'll also need a lot of support from you guys to get through everything. So let's get started!

The only things I have built are the 3 bikers in the box set. Here are 2 of the bikes, primed:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0825.jpg

And here are the 2 riders that I have primed:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0827.jpg

I started painting this bike, but it still needs a ton of work. All I have done is basecoated some of the metal parts:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0826.jpg

I should have the Attack Bike and Landspeeder finished soon, I'll post pics of them when I do. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Update time. I finished building the attack bike. The riders are not glued on and the side car is not attached to the bike, so it should be easier to paint. Sorry the pics are a little blurry:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0834.jpg

The Landspeeder has been a real pain to put together. The top part doesn't fit on the frame at all without there being a huge gap. I'm not really sure how to get it to fit:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0833.jpg

Any ideas for the Landspeeder? I could really use some feedback. Thanks.

I'm not quite sure how the landspeeder is not going together right, only thing I can say is make sure the parts that connect the sprue are gone, maybe you forgot to take ones off, I did that with my predator while building it, was going crazy unitil I found it :)

I haven't assembled mine yet, but I've heard that the landspeeder can have fit problems just as you are describing them.

No advice for you though, sorry.

yeah landspeeders are always a pain to put together, what i do is glue them and then wrap them very tightly in elastic bands ensuring all the gaps are closed. once you've done this just leave it alone for a few hours until the glue's set and that should solve your problem. it may still need a few gaps filled.

hope that helps

Thanks for the tips, I'll try using the elastic bands. I finished another biker, one with a melta gun:

Sorry about the lack of updates, but I've been a little busy. To start out with, I finished the landspeeder. It turned out the problem was that I had glued a couple of pieces on the wrong way. Here it is finished:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0842.jpg

I have been working on a Prince Yriel conversion over the past couple of days to enter in a painting contest at my LGS. The painting contest is in just under 2 weeks, so I should have enough time to finish him. I repositioned his arm. GS'd a few gaps, and primed him:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0844.jpg

Yriel will be standing on top of a Hive Tyrant's head to represent the scene that is described in the codex. In this scene Yriel takes the spear and buries into a giant Tyranid creature, thus ending the attack on Iyanden. The blob of bio-acid is where Yriel stabbed the creature:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0846.jpg

I should have another update within a couple of days showing the first stages of painting Yriel. I would really appreciate some comments. Thanks.

great work so far, one to subscribe!

So I started the Hive Tyrant's head today. All I have done is basecoated the skin with Bestial Brown and washed it with Flesh wash. The skin is still very WIP:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0848.jpg

I also started painting Prince Yriel. The only things that I have done with him is basecoat his robes and paint the spear blade:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0849.jpg

I don't really like how the blade turned out. It is hard to tell from the pic, but all I did was drybrush Enchanted Blue over Mithril Silver. Well it doesn't look anything like I hoped it would. I wanted to make it look like a power weapon crackling with energy or something because it is supposed to be right after he takes the sacred spear from a shrine. Any idea on how to make it look this way?

Thanks for the comments and keep them coming!

Update! I've been working on the Tyrant's head and I'm almost finished. The carapace still needs a few touch-ups and the eyes, teeth, and bio-acid need to be painted. The pictures really take away a lot from the model. In real life, the carapace looks a lot better:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0856.jpg

And a closeup of the carapace:

As promised, I have pics of Yriel. The robe isn't done yet, I still have to touch up the gold and the highlighting. Here's the front view:

I haven't had an update in a few days, so here's one. I haven't gotten much more painting done with Yriel, but I did get a lot of work done on the base. The stones I used are from the hero basing kit. Here's what it looks like so far:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0875.jpg

And the back:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0876.jpg

The tyrant's head still has to be touched up in a lot of places, especially where the paint has chipped. I'm probably also going to do some more drybrushing on the gravel and maybe add some static grass.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Yriel's base is coming along nicely. You may want to bump the Beasts back and replace them w/ 'nids. J/K. No need for three 40k armies if you don't have a WFB one.

Good luck on the painting comp.

Well to be honest, I was actually thinking about starting a swarm 'Nid army after my Ravenwing. Although I'm not sure if I'm going to be using the Kraken dcheme. It looks really good on the tyrant because it's for a painting comp, but I don't know if I could replicate it on 100+ models.

Either way, I think it is going to be one of those things that I build up over a long period of time because of all the models I need (so many spinegaunts to paint :cries:). Anyway I'll probably alternate painting a Beasts squad or 2 and a 'Nid squad so I don't get bored of painting the same scheme on so many models.

For now I have to concentrate on finishing Yriel. I drybrushed the gravel some more and applied some static grass. The base is really starting to shape up, now I just have to finish Yriel.

Thanks for the comments and keep them coming.

Update! This is the first of probably a few updates for tonight. The deadline for the painting contest is tomorrow, so I'll probably be up pretty late finishing Yriel. I've done a lot of the highlighting on the armor and finished his robes, but I still have to do a lot of the metal parts. The pictures are kinda crappy and take away from the model:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0877.jpg

And his robe:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0878.jpg

As I said the pics are pretty bad, I'll take better ones later on. Comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Update! I came in 2nd place for the painting contest, losing to a beautiful Logan Grimnar conversion. I'm pretty proud of myself that I did that well, especially since I've only been painting for under a year. Here is what Yriel looked like finished:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0881.jpg

I probably would have done a better job if I wasn't rushed at the end. But again, I'm proud of how good it turned out. Comments are welcome. Thanks.

Update time! I didn't get any painting done today, but I did assemble a few Ravenwing Bikers:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0882.jpg

I'm hoping to have a lot of my Ravenwing done by May 9th for a Space Wolves vs Dark Angels vs Chaos campaign. This shouldn't be to hard because there aren't a lot of models to paint and the scheme is pretty easy. Thanks for the comments and keep them coming!

Update time! I didn't get as much painting done as I had hoped, mainly because I realized that I don't have all of the paints I need. I'll pick up the paints on Saturday, but until then I'll probably just be building or painting the parts that I can.

I started painting the first biker, but he is really sloppy and a test model of sorts (I'll fix him later). I need to get your oppinion on the metal on the bike. Should I go with a Black Ink or Brown Ink wash on the metal? Here's how it looks:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0885.jpg

And here is a picture of how many models I have to paint for my Ravenwing. I still have 2 more bikers to build from the first battleforce, then I'm getting another battleforce and a Predator. Luckily most of the models have been primed:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/IMG_0886.jpg

Let me know what your oppinion is on the metal. Thanks.

personally, i'm a fan of brown ink on metal - gives it heaps of depth, a beautiful weathered look, and most of the time i love it with just a wash - no going back over it even. give it a shot anyways, and see what you think

Ok then, brown ink it is. I should pick it up along with the rest of the paints I need on saturday.

I assembled the last of the bikers from the battleforce, I just have to drill out the bolter barrels:

Anyway, back on topic. I put together some Spinegaunts today for my Tyranid army:

I'm seeing a few mould lines on the bikes and nids, which you'll want to clean up. Err, that's as much critique as I can do. I'll now go back to pondering how you've got so good in such a little amount of time when my painting is, to be frank, ass.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll make sure to go back and clean up the models some more.

Regarding the painting, I find you can get a lot better if you just practice new techniques. At first, I was afraid to try highlighting anything because I didn't want to mess up my models. But you have to just keep trying and practicing advanced techniques to get better. In the long run, you'll become a much better painter.

I should have another update tomorrow night because I'm getting all of the paints I need tomorrow. I'm probably also going to get another Ravenwing Battleforce. Thanks for all of the comments.

To be honest, I'm a little dissappointed in how it turned out and how long it took me. Hopefully I'll get better and faster with more practice.

Here are vets I assembled:

My goal is to have 2500 points finished by September 22 for a tournament, so I will be doing a lot more painting. Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

Painting update! I just thought I'd show a WIP picture of the bikes I'm working on. The front feathers still need a little touching up:

nice stuff here man. keep it up and they'll be turboboosting around confused opponents sooner than u think. (really like your termie poses too, even if a bit 'normal' they look nice)

um question about the paraphernalia on your whirlwind - are you just putting the ravenwing symbols there for decoration, or is it actually going to be a ravenwing whirlwind?

Well I guess it's going to be a Ravenwing Whirlwind. I figure that if Ravenwing are a scouting force, then they must have some fire support to help them out if they get in trouble.

I probably paint it in the Ravenwing scheme to help tie it in with the rest of my army.

Loving the bikes, don't forget to drill the bolters.

Sweet. I was going to say it woould be nice to see more finished stuff but then I realised it would be a bit hypocritical since I haven't even posted undercoated stuff yet! Worryingly it looks like some of the metallic paint has rubbed off some off the bikes. Might be my imagination but watch out for it. Annoys the hell out of me when it happens to my models!

Yeah, I'm going to Matte Varnish my bikers after I apply decals to prevent this. I will have an update tomorrow for sure, I'll finish the touch-ups tomorrow morning and post pics.

Update time! As usual I'm a little late on updates, although unusually I finished something. All I have to do is drill out the barrels when I get my hands on the right sized drill bit (mine broke). Here are the 5 bikers I have been working on:

Up next is one of the Predators. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

they look really nice. you should do some dramatic highlighting on those bolters though, it would go a really long ways. the feathers and everything else look crisp. good bases.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I might go back an add a lighter highlight to the bolters, but the picture also kills the red highlights a bit.

Any one else have comments?

I think Yriel was very good and congrats on doing so well in the painting comp.

I think your bikes look good but TBH I really liked them when they had black bolters a few posts back.

The bikers are looking cool. The red bolters add a welcome splash of colour to an otherwise black and white model. Do all your Dark Angels have red bolters? Harking back to 2nd Ed. colour scheme.

PS: Drilling barrels, I still have to do that on my bikes, forty-bloody-two of them...

i suppose i meant add some dramatic darks to the bolters. they need more of a gritty, darker look. keep the bright highlights, just give them more weight with some washes or a run of darker red around the part where they connect to the handlebars.

Hmm...I guess I could add a little Scab Red to the parts near the handle bars. I'll probably do it when I go back to add decals and such.

Here's some progress I made on one of the Predators, all I have done is washed the metal parts. The front thing keeps braking off, so I'm just going to paint it separate:

I'm hoping to have the Pred done by Friday or Saturday. Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming.

Update time! I finished the Pred finally, except for drilling barrels. Sorry about the crappy pic, it really kills the highlights:

Up next is 2 of the biker Sergeants. They are already mostly finished because I worked on them before, so expect to see an update soon with them. Thanks for the comments.

I haven't gotten much painting done because of the start of school. I did get a chance to paint up a Dwarf for Blood Bowl. The picture really kills the highlights, but you get the idea:

I haven't really decided on what I'm painting next. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I finished two melta gun bikers. Originally I was working on the sergeants, but the robes were pissing me off, so I'll probably strip them and start over. I'm still getting the hang of my new camera, so sorry if the pic isn't too good:

I finished another Attack Bike. The pics aren't too good, but you get the idea:

Up next is either painting a Landspeeder or Baneblade Assembly. I would really appreciate some comments. Thanks.

Sorry I haven't commented in a while mate.

O.K. the pred is looking nice, the first Raven-pred i've ever seen and it works. The bikes and attack are good as always but I don't think the yellow lights work too well, I prefer white, still each to their own:).

Some nice work, keep it up. :)

Hey, just noticed this thread, and it looks really cool. To say you've been painting for just over a year or so, you've done well.

I want to ask you something, how did you make them bike bases for your normal Bikers? They look really cool...

They are actually the GF9 biker bases, you can find them here (http://www.gf9.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=38&products_id=180). I think they look a lot better in 40k because they are round and they fit the bikes perfectly. They're also magnetic (although I've never used them for it).

Also, the headlights look a lot better when the army is on the table then when there are super closeup pics.

I also got a chance to pick this up at my LGS:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/000_0170.jpg

I think I'm going to paint a speeder and some bikes before I assemble this monster, mainly because I need more plastic glue and need to get myself mentally ready.

Thanks for the comments and keep them coming.

Yeah, I got one of the last ones at my store. There would have been more, but some Imperial Guard kid bought 3 . Which was really stupid considering the kid barely had 1500 points of regular guard, none of which was well painted.

Oh, and I started one of the track sections on the Baneblade, which has taken me over an hour. I'm assembling it little by little, so expect to see completed pics sometime next week.

Unfortunately no painting updates, but I do have a Baneblade update. I started a guide on how to magnetize the Baneblade, which you can see here (http://warseer.com/forums/m-p-t-general-discussion/108170-how-to-magnetize-your-baneblade-post2010659.html#post2010659). You can see some of the progress I've made on it, mainly building the two track sections.

I finally finished the Baneblade, after nearly a week of working on it. Here's what it looks like, with a Space Marine for scale:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/natedogg710/000_0192.jpg

I'm still working on the Landspeeder, but all I have done is paint and wash the metal parts. I''m hoping to have it done by the end of the weekend. Thanks in advance for any comments.
