View Full Version : Nkick's first ever army thread!

09-04-2007, 17:33
I've been following a few of the threads here for some time and have decided that it might be just the motivational tool I need to get my own orc and goblin army done. I played pretty much all of GW's games in the 90's but being a kid with a very short attention span I rarely collected a full army and never painted more than 3 or 4 models of a unit before moving on to the next intresting thing.

I've recently got back into the hobby at the age of 24 through a friend, and having always liked O&G and seeing as the starter box had night goblins I thought I'd try and get an O&G army together. I currently have just under 1000pts (just need 3 more fanatics to complete my 1000pts) which is basically the models fom BfSP bar the troll and 20 Orc Boyz including my general (the Grimgor Ironhide model), a rock lobber and 6 fanatics.

I've got pretty much all the night gobbos painted but am going very slowly and so am starting this in the hopes of it keeping me motivated and get me a bit of advice as my painting sucks. All of the models will be rebased at some point as they currently just have painted bases and they are just being painted to a tabletop standard (and bare in mind this is my first army and I was a pretty rubbish painter as a kid) Anyhow without further ado lets get to some pics!

My painting area and assistants trying desperately to break into their treats

and again from an angle which shows why I paint where I do

What I've got done so far the darker green is the green that comes with the BfSP paint set and shows you which I painted first before that paint ran out.

The first unit I completed (it doesn't get much better unfortunately)

Sorry about the double post but I hit my image limit

Command group fom the 2nd finished unit my bowmen

Unit I'm currently working on

Some stuff still to paint

and finally the model that I've been painting today sorry about the blur and he's a wip so he's a bit messy atm

09-04-2007, 18:52
Very cool, but get some wood flock on those bases! :p

09-04-2007, 20:28
Weebl and Bob!! :D <3

Nice gobbos. Now you just gotta base them. ^^

10-04-2007, 00:25
I've finished the standard bearer I was working on and based him (basically sprinkled hairy grass all over the place) and am going to start the boss tonight and then base the whole unit tomorrow. Unfortunately my cameras decided to die which is nice of it so my legion of adoring fans will have to wait till I either fix it (unlikely) or my girlfriend gets back with her camera on wednesday.

10-04-2007, 04:01
Got my camera working so here's some pics which seem to look a lot worse than he looks to me in the flesh. Maybe I'll have to rethink my lazy highlighting. At least he's been based (to an extent)

The boss just has green on him at the minute so I'll wait till he's finished to post some pics and I'm not sure about the shade of brown on the base, I might just leave them goblin green and add the grass to that. I'll try one of the others like that and see which looks best. Thanks for you comments people and Weebl and Bob are indeed good, though the soft toys are suprisingly expensive...

I like the brown color on the base better than the green. A cameras flash can really make the colors appear washed out which is probably why he looks different to you in the flesh. Try taking pics in a well lit area and not using the flash.

I can barely make out the highlights but they don't look sloppy to me.

10-04-2007, 20:50
Update Day 2

Ok got the boss finished and have rebased all of the unit that he comes with so they look a bit less rubbish, results below

Boss sorry about the dark pic

and from the back

the full unit based

and finally what I'm going to be starting next, though I'll have to base the other 2 units of goblins at some point

Edit: Looking at the pics the boss seems to have a random bit of crap on his sword and his base could do with a bit of tidying up

10-04-2007, 20:55
red is tought to paint over black. i usually apply two or three coats before i highlight.
also, you should shake your primer can more before you use it. shake the hell out of it or it will be tacky and shiny when you apply it.
with these tips your army should look killer, because it already does!

10-04-2007, 21:35
Yeah the red was starting to go blotchy and get too thick so I just gave up, that is two coats believe it or not an the orcs are no where near as shiny in the flesh they are just sat next to a light source. I should try and tidy the boss' hat up though, especially on the back. No-ones varnished yet so it's easily changed. Thanks for the comments.

Brakru Silverhammer
10-04-2007, 23:39
Looking good!

I find I have to hit most colors two or three times to fully cover the black and then I start highlighting. (as marcel already said) It's more work but worth it.

27-04-2007, 16:20
Rescued om the third page due to lazyness, I've got one of the orcs 'finished', I'm not 100% happy with him but I'm giving up and moving on as they were only supposed to be tabletop quality anyway. Also some WIP shots of the other 4 orcs.

Finished orc though the pics come out a bit dark, I've since tidied up his messy eye

and finally a group shot of my gobbos.

27-04-2007, 16:30
Wait! I sense something, my model sense is tingling....I see mold lines! Purge the Heretic :/ Nice job but solve that mold line problem.

cheers, keep up the good work.

27-04-2007, 16:41
Yeah I know,I cant be bothered on the ones I've aleady done but I'm going to start taking them off the unpainted models. Pretty obvious on his sword handle but they aen't that noticable in person.

28-04-2007, 17:10
Good progress this far. It's funny that your introduction sooo reminded me of my situation. A plog sure is a great way to manage that first army! Chiming in on the "good to see less flash on the models". :)

Brakru Silverhammer
29-04-2007, 00:21
Looking good. I didn't notice the flash until anyone mentioned it. :o

08-01-2008, 13:09
9 months later and there's finally some progress  It makes me realise how much I need to crack on and get these finished when I see that... I've finished the 5 WIP orc boyz and have another 5 finished to go with them but have misplaced my camera when I moved house. I'll get some pictures up either when I find my camera or manage to borrow one.
I've managed to stop myself buying anything new while I have these to do but that does make it slightly hard to find motivation at times (though the thought of the reward of new stuff should help). I've still got to paint

9 Orc boyz
10 BfSP Spider Riders
Grimgor Ironhide (Acting as an Orc Big boss while my armies just at the 1000 point stage)
3 Fanatics
A rocklobber
My night goblin shaman

I then need to buy 3 more fanatics and my 1000pt army will be finished and I can move onto expanding with some new stuff :) Non of the above is even started yet bar undercoats on 5 of the boyz.
Traumatically during my move I've also managed to lose the head from my avatars of war goblin boss so he's going to have be consigned to the bits box unless I can find something else that will work. I've got the Orc Shammy as well which I'll be looking to get painted once I've got the stuff above done.
Anyway, less talking more camera finding and you can all look forward to seeing my 'wonderful' painting.

08-01-2008, 17:06
Huzzah found my camera, but sadly no head and even more sadly you now have to be subjected to my abysmal camera work as well as my painting!

I'll try and crack on with another 5 boyz tonight and hopefully have them finished by the weekend so there should be another update then with any luck. Any C and C is welcome though I realise some models may still have the odd bit of flash here and there. I was wondering in particular whether people think I should redo the yellow hoods which a couple of the boyz have? Does this detract too much from the red and black colour scheme?

08-05-2008, 11:44
I didn't say which weekend! 4 months to the day and I have another 5 boyz finished. My painting seems to be stuck at pretty poor. I had a crack at highlighting these guys but it looked rubbish everywhere but the skin so I ended up painting over it.

Hopefully I can get more than roughly a model a month done this time round. I'm down to the last 4 members of my orc boyz unit including the boss, standard and musician so it should be a bit more interesting at least. I've undercoated 5 spider riders as well in preparation for when i get these boyz finished. Anyhow pics below.

Group shot of the new 5

Close up of one of them

08-05-2008, 12:42
you should really get a taller table that stretches out to the couch so you don't have to stretch or you'll probably hurt your back pretty bad

08-05-2008, 13:18
I've moved house now, but I still do a lot of painting sat on the floor. Who knows why.

08-05-2008, 13:39
Looks like pretty normal Tabletop Standard painting to me. Don't worry about your first highlights not looking perfect, just stick to it and it will get better every time.

And I sit on the floor and paint too. I prefer it, and it puts me neatly at eye level with my stupidly low table. I also lack good lights, so I try to sit by the balcony doors during daytime, as it is as good as it will get in my apartment.

08-05-2008, 20:23
nice nice...

i seem not to spot much inking and drybrushing tou

do add some of these techniques in to make ur models look even better!

but great stuff nonetheless!

09-05-2008, 12:38
I ink the skin and give the black and red areas a light drybrushing with skull white, I've only really started doing the inking on the orcs though. I then try and highlight it back up to a bit above goblin green but the results aren't that successful. I'm at a total loss for the red though, it seems to look crap whatever I do. Despite multiple coats.

Thanks for the c&c it's probably fairly easy to just ignore my stuff seeing as it's not very good but any advice is appreciated.

11-05-2008, 16:38
nice painting, keep it up, id like to see some more.

07-06-2008, 17:42
Ok so I've finally got the last of my boyz painted and the finished unit can be seen below, the new guys are the command and the orc on the right of the front rank as you look at them.

So a month for 4 models which though slow is a lot quicker than I have been painting recently :) I've started on a wyvern which I bought the other day as a mount for my old Azhag model and am going to start 5 spider riders tonight as I've got the fear I'll mess the wyvern up now I've finished the easy bits.
I've ordered 4 more boys from ebay as well so I'll get them painted up to take the unit to 23 when they arrive.

I've played a couple of games now as well which has led to 2 massacres against me :) Though the fist game I was playing VC and the 2nd was vs a tournement optimised LM army. The first game was horrible and I just felt I couldnt cause enough casualties for him not to just raise me to death. The 2nd game was fun though and closer than it sounds, it would probably have been a lot closer if I'd remembered to move Azhag in the first 2 turns... He did still manage to slaughter a Stegadon once he finally remembered to charge, though by the end he was the only of my models left on the table.

After these games I've decided I hate night goblins and fanatics are no where near as good as I had hoped, this has led to me writing most of them out of my list. I've got a 2000 point list writen up which I like the look of but have a dilemma when taking it up to 2250 points. Do I take a 2nd giant, a unit of 5 trolls or a unit of 3 stone trolls? I'm leaning towards 5 trolls at the minute but any input would be appreciated.

09-06-2008, 04:36
Hey good work on your minis! I read you have trouble with red, may I suggest using some brown paint as basecoat for it?, works much better IMO than just applying pure red after the black undercoat. I like your paint scheme it sort of reminds me of mine :)

Night goblins work well in large numbers and with maybe some netters give em a second chance! :p. 5 trolls all the way (the more the merrier) but remember you might need to babysit em with some character... but this is not the thread to discuss that!

keep up the good work!

23-06-2008, 23:01
Bumping for great justice and motivational skills.

Also, I'm the guy that massacred him. It wasnt my Lizardman army but I really enjoyed that game so Im collecting those. Post your wyvern!

24-01-2009, 18:30
Well, another massive hiatus and a complete change of system this time. I've got around 2000pts of unpainted Tyranids and I got a battalion box for christmas so I've been trying to paint up some of my legions of genestealers. I've gone for a winter theme on these but have been struggling with snowing up the bases and have ended up with what looks like slush.

So, this is what I've done so far, the first 6 of the 50 I have along with various other odds and sods.

I've also started work on some more models for my Orcs and Goblins with these 5 spider riders (though I've managed to break a spear) and this will be what I'll be looking to get finished next. Expect some progress around July :)

22-03-2009, 18:13
So the Spider Riders are finally done 2 months later :) I'm not very happy with these at all and my painting just seems to be going backwards but ho hum at least they're done. Looking at these pictures I'm going to have to come back and tidy these up at some point as they look really rubbish in the photos.

I also got this chap done who's a rather nice model that I really haven't done justice to. I'm particularly dissapointed with the yellow. I think I'm going to have to get myself some foundation yellow as the others I have just don't give any coverage.

I'm now working on the 2nd 5 spider riders to finish these off, expect these in the next couple of weeks hopefully but don't expect much as I really don't enjoy painting them...

22-03-2009, 18:44
Glad I'm not the only one that's going through his own 'red period' on an O&G army :)

I can say that Iyanden Darksun (Foundation Yellow) is a god send for painting yellow, that and a wash of your choice and then highlight away until you are happy.

22-03-2009, 21:43
Looking good, especially the white and black pattern on the spiders which is really nice. You might look into some black or dark green washes to put in the recesses on the gobbo faces, and maybe some orange highlight to the eyes. As it is now the red and green blend into each other a bit, and a darker border would give a better contrast and make them easier to see. And I had that shaman too back in 4th ed! Thanks for the nostalgia. :)

25-03-2009, 08:23
I do wash the goblins skin and then highlight it back up but sadly my poor brush control tends to scupper any decent effect I might get from that. The spider riders look like I've just managed to rub a lot of the paint off their faces while holding them and I can see what you're saying about the eyes. I tried a black outline on the shaman but I don't think it worked very well and I removed most of it just before I finished him.

And to 5pointer yeah reds me colour, decided to do the army red and black throughout to try and give it a bit of a unified feel. The Iyanden Darksun is next on my shopping list along with a couple of the new washes. See if they help :)

13-06-2009, 20:57
So with the usual massive break I've actually got something done! I've got a tournament coming up that I need to get theese guys painted for so hopefully expect the see more regular updates over the coming months.

First up the rest of the spider riders including an old school rider after I lost one of the plastic ones. I'm happier with these than the first 5 but still pretty much hated painting them but they're done now so on to something a bit more intresting.

And that slightly more intresting is squigs! I'm really happy with how these turned out and they took next to no time to paint so huzzah!

Next up another 5 of these which I'll hopefully get done tomorrow or through the week.

21-06-2009, 10:26
Got the 2nd 5 squigs done. I don't think they're quite as good as the 1st 5 but they're the 2nd rank so meh.

And a pic of them ranked up with the other guys, they're such a bugger to rank up and as they aren't posable there's pretty much nothing I can do about it.

And then what I'm going to be painting next for the 3rd rank

And finally a little something something I picked up the other day, I absolutely love this kit, so many different options.

21-06-2009, 10:48
Really like the squigs! I must say your red is very good. A wee tip I'd like to offer is a touch of wash round the handles[bolty bits] of the weapons for a little added contrast. Either use badab black or devlan mud[my fav for evil armies]. It's a quick little touch but adds alot of depth. Other than that- keep painting!

28-06-2009, 22:25
Thanks Stu. 2 of this lot have handweapons so I've given them a bit of a wash of black ink (I don't have the new washes), see how that's gone.

I actually played 2 games today for the first time in ages and got my first win! Massacre for vs High Elves where I wiped out his whole force in 5 turns. It was all cavalry pretty much and my fanatics minced him and then his generals unit fled from my giant when they really needed to hold back through the fanatics again. I was impressed with my Savage Orc BigBoss in a chariot who smashed his centre then rolled down his whole right flank and wiped out a big unit of silver helms, 2 bolt throwers, a mage and a unit of archers once he got back into the centre.

The 2nd game was a massacre against vs wood elves unfortunately, they just danced around me and shot me to death, I caused a fair few casualties but in the end only had the Bigboss on 1 wound in his chariot with 1 wound so...

There was a squig related disaster on the way to the games with them all falling about and getting nastily chipped including the new 5 I had just painted. I've touched them up again tonight and hopefully the look ok now but if there's any random silver showing through thats why.

So anyway on to the new pics! Not sure if you can see any depth on the metal but I tried!

Next week should be 5 herders which I've started tonight. Incidentilly my squig herd were useless in the 2 games today, they didn't do anything at all in the 1st game bar have about 5 of them shot and were completely wiped out in the 2nd game by bowfire with the last 2 goblins being cut down by a stand and shoot in a glorious latch ditch charge. Still I love the models so I'll keep them in.

28-06-2009, 22:52
I still use the old inks- you just have to thin them abit. If you keep them thin then you don't have to be too precise and if the effect isn't strong enough for your taste just build up multiple layers. the new washes are a very good investment- you can use them straight from the pot[no thinning needed]- the effect is subtle- so of you want heavier effects just layer up[or put loads on like me!!]. I use the other inks for stronger effects- like lining. Those squig riders look great- very nicely done- keep it up and don't be afraid to mess with washes- just keep 'em thin!

09-07-2009, 22:20
Thanks Stu and cheers for the advice it's appreciated. So I'm a bit behind schedule now but the first 5 herders are done. The lights not great in the pictures but it'll do.

Next up 5 more of these guys to finish the unit, they should hopefully be done by Sunday.

26-07-2009, 20:57
Ok and the last 5 herders are finally finished huzzah! I feel like the qualities slipped again as I was just painting a set of mini's I'd painted before so I got a bit bored doing these. But they're done now. I'll stick a full unit shot up once I've tidied up the last of the chipped squigs.

Next up the last 5 boyz for my main block. I've got a few old models I'm painting up so I'm enjoying doing these at the minute.

28-07-2009, 21:20
Touched up the squigs (fnar, I'm such a child...) and here's a couple of unit shots, the pictures aren't great but you get the idea. I love how even my fairly poor paint jobs can look pretty good when it's all ranked up.

The boys are maybe about halfway done now and hopefully I can get a bit further along tonight, I'll claim they'll be up on thursday but I'll beleive that when I see it.

02-08-2009, 17:48
I love those Squig herder miniatures, they are some of my favourites of the O&G line and those came off lovely. Keep up the good work!

Nephilim of Sin
02-08-2009, 21:44
The Squigs are looking really good, and look great when you have them ranked up. I agree that you did a really good job with the herders, as well.

02-08-2009, 22:55
The army's looking good. One small tip (which might have been mentioned): have a try with washes to give instant shading to your models. The new GW washes are brilliant; just sloshing devlan mud onto any armour (red or silver) and weapons should give a good effect. I've not tried the green wash, but presumably thraka green over the skin tones would also look good.

How much have you got in total now? Got any army shots? :D

05-08-2009, 18:46
Thanks for the kind comments guys. As has been mentioned I do use inks for depth (I don't have the new washes though) but I tend to lose the depth when I try and highlight them back up. Also I lazily just correct any marks of other colours on the skin with the base green so again that loses some of what I'm after. Generally by the point I'm doing that though I'm so sick of the models I can't be bothered to redo them properly!

I'm going to a tournament at the end of the month and I now just have the good stuff left to paint for that so I'll put a shot up of what I have done then.

My completed models are

Night Goblin Shaman
50 NG with spears
20 NG with bows
10 spider riders
25 Squigs/herders
and now 24 Orc Boyz

and the things left to paint for the tournament are

3 fanatics
Black Orc BSB on boar
Boar Chariot
Savage Orc BigBoss in a Boar Chariot
2 Spear Chukkas
and my Giant

I'm not going to be taking the spear armed night goblins as long as I get all this done in time as it's only 1500 pts.

And the 5 orc boys to take the unit to 24 are now completed and here's the pics below. As I've signed up for the tale of painters these guys are officially my first finished models for this years tale. Only 35pts but every little helps.

As a group

And a close up of one of the cool old lead models, as the unit all has 2 hand weapons I'm just imagining the band for the shield to be some kind of knuckle duster for now. The sword appears to look horrible here, I may have to go back over it at some point.

29-08-2009, 17:57
Ok so I've been busy this month painting for the TOFP and have got a fair old bit done or close to done. I finished:

A boar Chariot

3 Fanatics

and then the 5 boys which you've already seen just above

And the lot of them together

It comes to 190pts so works out nicely for my August's painting. I also got my Black Orc BSB on boar 99% completed apart from his standard and my Savage Orc Bigboss completed and his chariot about 75% done. I started my giant as well but he's still very W.I.P. I'm going to leave finishing these off till I get back from Crete in mid September.
For now I'm going to be getting on with my Tyranids to try and get my Hive Tyrant done in time for the 40k tale submission though as I'm on holiday from Tuesday I probably won't be able to submit anything till I get back.

31-08-2009, 00:27
Henry the Hive Tyrant is complete! I was vey pleased with how he'd turned out before I looked at these pictures and now I'm less so. I'll try and get some better ones in the natural light tomorrow and maybe replace these. This'll be submission for the tale of painters this month but he's staying unbased until I get a round base to replace the square one he came with. So here he is, he looks too dark and a lot of the detail is lost here, you can barely even tell the weapons are mostly green, as I say I'll try and get a better photo.

Next I'll be finishing off my BSB for my orcs and then it's on to more nids and some genestealers probably. I won't be doing anything till I get back from holiday now though.
