Right then, I guess it's about time I started a project log. This is the first army I've painted for over ten years and I seem to have jumped into the deep end.

Here's a quick run down of the units I've got and the current state they are in:

Commander - almost finished. Just needs the details touching up.

Ethereal with honour guard and devilfish - barely started. I've just built the bases and pinned a couple of legs on.

Fireknife crisis suit team - virtually finished. Could possibly use some detail work.

Deathrain crisis suit team - one model coming along well (better than half way painted), one not even assembled yet.

Stealth team - six suits coming along well (one totally finished, all others better than half way). Three more unassembled suits, which don't fit into the current army list, may be built later.

Alternative crisis suits - I seem to have a couple spare, so I might build another team to swap in as needed.

Fire warriors - one squad almost done, with transport. Two small squads about half painted. one squad primed, with half painted transport. All drones still need to be done.

Kroot - loads of them. Some painted but in need of repainting, some built but unpainted, some not even assembled.

Kroot substitutes - human and ogryn auxilaries, mostly built, but not painted yet.

Fast attack

Pathfinders - Better than half painted on average.

Drones - not even assembled yet.

Piranhas - One half built, two others still on the sprue.

Heavy support

Hammerheads - one almost done, one about half painted.

Other heavy support slot - not yet decided what to buy. Forge world broadsides are my current favourite, but I'm not going to spend any more money until I've made some serious progress with this lot.

... and here are the models which I think are ready to be fielded.

Not really a great start. I can't be bothered to heap up the stuff which still needs to be done to photograph it, but it's a lot.

As you can see, I'm going with a mostly green colour scheme, with lots of neutral colours and camouflage patterns. The bases will be urban rubble and snow. Visual inspiration is mostly twentieth century armies, especially cold war era soviets.

They look like very decent paintjobs - very nice! I really like the Stealth Suits' colour scheme.

I know exactly what you mean about wading through the huge pile of unpainted models you have to get through. All I can say is good luck, keep it up because an army of models like the selection you've shown here is an army of which you can justly be proud.

For the greater good! I like these a lot, and I love that stealth camo.

I agree with Eniac, the stealth suit camo is great! Overall some pretty good painting!

11-04-2007, 00:14
You don't want to know what I thought your name was at first glance. Maybe i'm too tired.

Cool models. It's nice to see some new and innovative Tau colour schemes. I like how you've done the camo on the stealthsuits: very fitting.
Also, although he is a bit obscured at the back, I love the pose of the crisis commander. He looks like he is landing from a jet jump.

Stealth camo is ace, really digging it. Commander's white helmet is money too.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm afraid I've been a bit slack about painting this week, especially since the usual big painting session I have with my mates on Saturday afternoon was replaced by gardening.

Anyway, here are a few images of things I am working on.

This pathfinder is just about visible in the last image I posted, but you can't really see his camouflage, which is the best bit. It's suprisingly easy to paint (no harder than a well blended single colour really) and I think it works pretty well. Eventually I will have eight pathfinders painted like this. The others are in various stages of completion.

Next we have a Kroot. This is the first mini of this army which I used metallics on and I'm pretty pleased with the results. The painting isn't incredibly neat, but I think I can get away with being a bit messy with kroot anyway.

Then we have my low calorie kroot alternative. Human auxillaries with kroot weapons (ogryns count as krootox). Obviously these guys still need a lot of work, but I'm pretty pleased with how they are coming along.

Here's a few more finished Fire Warriors. Not an awful lot to say about these guys except that there will soon be a lot more of them.

Continued in next post due to image limits...

Then we have my ethereal and some of his honour guard. These guys are barely started... this image is mostly just to show off the milliput rubble bases, which I am quite pleased with.

Finally, we have a work in progress crisis suit. He was originally on a flying base, but it snapped, leaving the end embedded in the mini, so I drilled a pin through his foor and rebased him on another milliput rubble pile. He still needs some painting and more snow and stuff on his base, but I think this gives an idea of where I am going with him.

Brilliant Kroot stand-ins, like the Kroot head-dresses and the ogres are a great choice and well carried out too. Look forward to seeing them painted.

I'm afraid that I've been distracted from painting by various things for the last couple of weeks, but I'm back on the bandwagon now and I plan to get a fair bit done this week as I have a game on Saturday and I want to have a fully painted army (only 500 points, thank God, but I still need to finish that crisis suit, do four more gun drones and paint a hammerhead for the list I want).

Anyway, here's this weekend's painting:

The gun drones are nice and easy to do, but the fire warriors were a real pain. The team leader there is my first attempt at directional lighting effects and it turns out that they are even harder than they look.

Also, here's another one of my kroot substitutes. Still a work in progress, but I'm pretty pleased with him so far.

nice work on the sniper-kroot! and all of your other army figures. I like the blotchy-snow camo... that's suits the Tau very well.

Nice job with the green camo on those stealth suits. I really like it.
Are you just going to count all the humans as Kroot or are something else?

I think the light sourcing came out really well for a first attempt! Will you be using it anywhere else?

All of the ones I've done so far are going to be kroot substitutes. I don't think humans really work well as FW substitutes, because then some special Tau rules would apply to them (like getting Ld re-rolls from ethereals) although I might do a couple of cadians with pulse rifles at some point, just for fun. I'm considering making one of my piranhas human crewed, using the parts from a heavy weapons team.

I plan to do a blue light source effect on my ethereal and I want to get better at it before I do that, so I will be using it on some other things for practice. I'm not sure what yet though.

Could you post more pics of your human auxilliaries? They look very good from what I can see. Very original.

08-05-2007, 16:39
Those auxilliaries are awesome, fantastic concept!

Here's an old thread about them. (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77004) I've finished the bases now and undercoated most of them, but I'm trying to get my core troops (i.e. Fire Warriors) done before I start painting them.

Thanks for the link. (I know this sounds like a very spammy post, but I did have to give my confirmation, idn't I? ;-) )

Everything's looking great. I'm especially impressed with the auxiliries, espcially the sniping model, very original and very well executed. The colour scheme suits the Tau, and you've applied it well to your models. The miliput bases look good too, and although the light source painting isn't the best, it's something to work on. All in all, very impressive work, and I can't wait for more. :)

Nice job, that guy looks really cool. Althoug will that camo match the Green Tau?

I haven't been doing much painting this week, because I've been working on this conversion. I wasn't really happy with my current commander, so I've built a new one based on a conversion over on the French GW website. I'm pretty pleased with this guy and I think he will make a great centrepiece for my army.

I just need to tidy up some of the GS work (I need to wait for it to dry before I file it) and then he's going to be ready for priming.

03-06-2007, 12:12
wauzi this looks nice =)
like it a lot
the "wings" (?) on the top look great, reminds me of transformers :D
good work, keep it up

Here's another crisis suit I made while I was doing the commander. A less extreme conversion, but a fairly nice one I think.

Inquisitor Konig
03-06-2007, 17:23
Those look really nice. Personaly I would have no idea how to convert tau but you are showing that it is very possible and they (once again) look very nice!

03-06-2007, 22:09
Hmmm I just wonder if the Tau appreciate external calipers...

But your commander looks brilliant!

04-06-2007, 07:22
dunno about skimping on cutting up a 3rd stealth for the commander. the different shoulders are interesting though!

I seem to be starting a lot of things this week without finishing any of them. Here's a WIP on my Ethereal with source lighting effects.

In other news, I won two more games with the army yesterday, bringing me up to four wins and no losses with them so far.

12-06-2007, 21:07
Very very nice. I love that source lighting, it is very realistic. I like this a lot. And you picked the best ethereal model as well.

Good job

27-06-2007, 18:44
i ove your MR.T human auxilarie lol, its good to know someone else takes the time to paint alternative skin tones on their models. other than that, whats not to love?? your commander is kickass, you human auxillaries are truly inspired, both in concept and modeling. but i think that sniper is just toooo good to use as an auxilarie, reserve him for an IG list and use the deathworld sniper rules.

17-07-2007, 21:55
Drones are Sweet!

18-07-2007, 00:21
Wonderful tau! Great painting and conversions.

18-07-2007, 00:27
Nice attempt on the illumination looks good although to much area is covered and some places where the light would not hit, also the further out the light goes the dimmer it gets so points on the furthest part should not be so bright,
well hope that helps abit :P other than that looking cool!!!

The tau battle suits are looking nice, the conversions look really smooth looking and not way over the top well done keep up the good work can't wait to see more :D

Best regards

if u want human auxileries go on gw site tau section for their rules if its still there they were cool although they did only have lasguns with ability to give half squad pulse rifles
