View Full Version : The TITAN (Armourcast Eldar Phantom)

I dont ussually make a Project log when im sculpting or painting my tyranids
or other projects but this time everything is quite diferent.

I have acepted, last year, my most challenging commission work so far,
a very old and hard to get Armourcast Eldar Phantom Titan,
one of the biggest fellas i have ever seen (about 36cm tall) and my job
is to cover him by sculpting details on it since he is
a bit lacking on that area.

One of the main problems is that he is so huge im going
to spend GS like crazy on this, also the resin is full of
big bubbles holes so the cleaning alone will take lots of time.
but im quite exited with this crazy project, it will be a slow project
due to its gigantic dimensions and hard one to pull off right
but i will have lots of fun doing it.

time for pics...
By the end of january of 2007 i received this
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6176/boxer8.jpg

http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/1577/titaninboxsf8.jpg

opened it and displayed on the floor ( note that the grey dot near
his head is a genestealer miniature and he is there for scale prespective)
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/7369/titanwj5.jpg

and finnaly a sketch i did for one of the shoulder pads
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/9378/phantomtitanshoulderom9.jpg

Lots of helms to sculpt hehe

I also been sculpting this for the last month and finnished both
shoulder pads and im currently on torso cleaning and detailing...
will take pictures in a few weeks.
Cheers

Are you going to re-pose the legs (and possibly arms?), those armorcast models can look a bit static and it would be a shame if the pose let down your excellent detailing.

Looking forward to it, anyway.

NAVARRO
12-04-2007, 12:58
its still a option it really depends on client preference of keeping this with original positioning or change it to a more dynamic pose (we are debating it)... although it will be very hard to make this miniature more dynamic since its balance is very tight, mess up with a leg and miniature may fall down... considering the weight and amount of resin and it would be disastrous one of these big titans falling down.

A solution would be making one big display base... and by huge it would be something like more or less 25% of a normal gaming table:evilgrin:

Fair enough. I'd try for some heavy duty steel pins and a big scenic base, myself. I rather like the idea of a base so big that smaller models can move onto it to attack the titan...

One more watcher here...

I think that the relatively static pose could look great if the titan is decorated to indicate that the battle is over. Some battle damage, cermonial victory banners and so on...

A neutral shade of black.

I've got one of these babies still in his box (I've been to afraid to paint him!). I can't wait to see your version and maybe I can "borrow" a few ideas.

Regarding the shoulder pad, are you actualy going to sculpt all of those heads or decapitate a few models?

i have started working on the part clients liked the least and that was the left shoulder pad ( its the one in wrongly assembled on the right side of the titan, the one with lots of balls on the trim)
So by using those balls dimensions as base for the eldar champs helms the scale is bigger... i have to sculpt all of them.
No problem i already did ;) i garantee you its very time consuming.

Thanks all for replies will try to post pics of full torso and shoulder pads finnished asap. (torso as so many air bubbles its a nightmare to clean)
All these repositioning debate got me playing with kit legs more seriously and i think its doable... if i rotate hip to one side bend front leg may give a better looking dynamic mini. That will be next fase of project... we have decided to work step by step and each fase is a part of the mini, this way we can concentrate more on detailing one particular part instead of all of this immense mini.

What parts?

This guy must be a perfectionist to fault your work.

Is there any plans to modify the feet? I have to admit that I hate the 'crow's feet' style of the model, I much prefer the hooves/shoes style of the wraithlords, war walkers and new FW Revanant.

I love the work you've done there Nav, its truly inspiring.

I also like the static pose. It reminds me of both the arrogance of the Eldar, and the early days of space marine and the "Eldar and Chaos" expansion.

on wip pics i changed hips, head, arms and legs angles a bit to make it more dinamic and a bit more interesting than the inbox original pose, although i think i will defenitly bend front leg to make it a lot more dinamic, that will extend my commission since if i bend the leg i have to do a big base for the titan and thats something client have to decide.

Working on such big scale really is misleading because its very easy to get lost in all details and forget that the overall mini design has to be consistent, its a great challenge.

The fenris kraken is theorized to be descended from tyranid organisms (gone native), and I think there was a WD story that mentioned 'things' scraping at the bottom of ships. Can't remember where, sorry.

This is looking great. One thing I would suggest is that it may start to look a little too 'organic' if you put spiky vines on everything. Maybe put heart shaped ivy leaves on to make them look a little more decorative and less wild, perhaps.

No not dead:) This project is very diferent from a normal 28mm convo, due to its unconventional size its like converting a full army, its taking me lots of time and i have projected it for a full year of sculpting... it just takes much more time than the ussual mini sculpt. One thing for sure after this i will relax with 28mm convos for a while.

Both back fins are 90% sculpted i only need to add hundreds of spikes to the vines on both ( these spikes alone are giving me nightmares they are just soooo many so tiny)

in fact i was taking some shots of my workplace and you can check out one of the fins wip there...

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/3962/workplace2ib1.jpg

i have done a concept sketch for arms (simple stuff) and before i showed client for aproval i sculpted them when spikes were curing
I just hope he likes them, its really simple stuff... my idea is not to make lots of details on ALL parts, this way mini more interesting and no so busy and boring.

i hope to take official pics soon when all done with spikes, lets just hope i dont go nuts doing them...

I think you selling yourself short mate, your talented.

I agree. The detail on this is astounding and is at least equal to the things produced by Forgeworld. With your talent you might want to consider sending a portfolio of your work to FW - you never know!

I'd love to see a pic of this fin on the body section you've already done.

NAVARRO
26-10-2007, 10:15
Believe me guys when i say im several steps back with the FW and GW folks, the time alone they dedicate to sculpting is a big diference... someone sculpting all day full working hours will be miles away from me, since that I can only have like few hours a week... since much about evolving as a sculptor is about practice and practice im always far away from them.

I know im evolving fast and works are on a positive level, for a amateur, but comparing it with pros is a big leap;) doesnt mean i dont aim for pro sculpting level... i will get there, but im still a long way from it;)

@Daemonslave cant wait to show you guys a picture with both fins on torso, i look at them everyday and its a imposing thing to see i give you that... i hope that inserting spikes on vines doesnt take much time in order for me to take final pics of torso...

As for sending portfolio to some companies i think i will do just that after finishing off titan.

thanks guys

My commission starts and ends at sculpting, the painting will be done by client's own painter ( I think he is going to hate me for the quantity of details he will have to paint :D )
I will hunt for finished painted pictures when all is done, and will post them here for sure.

As for no updates on buglands, on tyranid front its been a bit quiet but i did a new page there for my upcoming Plague Guard Project.
Although i dont have the time needed to keep both titan and my nids at a steady pace... untill i finish titan theres going to be a pause on other stuff unfortunatly.:cries:

What are you planning on doing with the stance? It can't be a revenant balarina ofcourse, but some people have made far too sturdy stances. Any ideas?

NAVARRO
31-10-2007, 11:51
Position will be like "looking for new target, after destroying a packed chaos rhino", so the stance will be dinamic but no balarinas:D
It will have to be a controlled position because this model is very heavy and I dont want it to splatter on the floor, even if I'm going to do a big display base to go with it, I should be carefull with weight forces.

This model is indeed a stamina and endurance test, I have to keep myself always motivated and thats a bit hard to keep up for a full year... I'm glad I have put all other sculpting projects on hold this way im 100% concentrated on this one.

Fear not mates i will post concept draws for the head, but before i need to add the GS spike nş200 on the vines and keep on working with fins.

I love this thread. It's amazing what you have done so far and the concept sketches for the legs and feet look great too. I must confess, however to being slightly underwhelmed by the head, which will be the focal point for the model - which in your sketch looks a little plain. It would be a shame, IMO, to have done so much work on the model only to leave the head bland in comparison.

I'm not sure what to suggest, mind you, perhaps adding fins to the back of the head / including a Saim-Hann logo on the forehead, or perhaps just a generic rune - I just feel it needs something.

Brilliant work though - I wish I had your talent (and that model!:p)

Thanks mates.
Yes the head crest bit, like some parts of the model is left untouched because the back fins are already very very busy with details and they are side by side near the head... so my idea was not to flood every space with details because it would make titan way to busy... i hope the head will stand out much more on the mini with just some small parts with GS details... but these concepts are still on wip stage I have to wait for the clients feedback first... and if he wants more details i will do more;)

SOrry about the money mate

And another small update.

This time I changed one of the titans shoulder pads because client didnt like much the big heart on the middle of it, so I added a big eldar rune on the middle of it, like client sugested...I think it looks better, lets hope I'm not the only one hehe.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/6920/newpadht2.jpg

Little by little I'm conquering this titan...

I'm looking at the legs and left one will be repositioned to a more dinamic pose... its going to be hard to pull this off, wish me luck.

Animerik
14-07-2008, 23:39
Brilliant mate!! I really like how this is comming along. The shoulder pad looks better now (not that it looked bad before :P). My favorite part is the vines they make the mini pop good work on those .

The new pose will make the entire mini look alot better. Best of luck with it and I have faith in you that it will look awsome when done (wait it already looks awsome!?!) well then it will be ... .awsomer? awsomest? heck my english isn´t good enought.

CaptainSenioris

Apart from looking a little messy in the top left that looks great, I'm sure it's fine.

The best re-pose of the epic model that I've seen is here (http://warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2560116&postcount=11) it's from another log here on WarSeer, it looks simple enough and the end result is awesome.

I hope that helps, nice to see the updates coming more frequently. :)

The Armorcast titans are cool, but I always thought that they were a bit old school and bland. Your work is _exactly_ what they need.

If a piece like this showed up on Forgeworld, I would get it. It might take meals of Ramen and a couple of months, but I _would_ have it in my hands. No exaggeration.

Luck!

You don't need luck, you have the skills. I confidently expect this to be brilliant when it's finished. :) You may be right about leaving the head 'un-detailed'; it's nice to have some big smooth areas on the model to make the detail pop, and a helmet is an obvious place.

Shoulder pad with heart will not be trashed but I will have to add more vines to the heart...

I have just been commissioned to convert this titan, someone else will paint it ( thanks for the post Daemonslave)
I also hope the painter doesnt rush painting because I have putted so much work on this... I will try to get the painted photos when its all done ( I bet an airbrush will do this wonders)

For now still waiting for client feedback on this and I need to move on to the base ( wich is pretty big also)

@silverstu yeah I have been off forums lately, just to many things going on and forums got a back seat.

It's the time to close this blog.
I finished the Eldar Phantom Titan... Took me about 2 years and drained me completly.
This project was so far the biggest challenge to my endurance, almost drived me nuts but its over now and I just hope client likes it.

Tried some diferent concepts, I had in my mind, and kind of worked out the way I planned to. Not overthetop but high detailed, hard balance to get it right in these scales but I think its a positive result.
After all this time I think I'm now a more experienced sculptor and probably would change some parts, yet its time to close this door.

Thank you all that keept giving me energies and motivation to carry on II really apreciated it.
To all I leave the final pics.

Legendary. your commitment to this project is very inspiring and the finished is incredible!
something I notice is that you replaced the heart with a yin-yang symbol, was this because the client wasnt happy with thed heart?

Again great work, can't wait to see it painted!

Well done and Bravo! :)

If your client ever sends you shots of this once it's been painted please put them up here.

Absolutely fantastic. One of the best projects I have ever seen.

I envy you for the patience and endurance you were able to bring up.

Who will paint it? I hope it won't be anybody with a lesser skill.

Will you be able to post a link or a picture once the titan is painted?

Yes client didnt like the heart shoulderpad and sugested a ying yang symbol... needless to say I had to redo most of the shoulder pad.

I think its a friend of the client and if I recall it right he was a top painter.
Hope the paintjob is good.

Thanks all for the support on this forum along the years, without you guys motivating me to keep it going it would be much harder to make this happen.

WOW! Navarro- that is just draw dropping to see finished. Hats off to you- that is just amazing. My favourate bit is the thorn detailing along the "wings"- it crackles with energy and life. Really captures the eldritch nature of eldar technology. Brilliant work.

UnF***ingbelievable. I love that model. You can tell its Biel-Tan just by looking at it. Its perfect.

Just for my own projects, how do do the spikes on the vines? mine always turn out rubbish.
Mabye a tabard might have looked good hanging down from the waist?
