a while ago, in the days where portent was portent, and warseer was not even dreamed of, i ran a short story competition in the background parts of these forums, now ive been thinking about running it again, this time, i decided to post the thread in here, as it seems more fitting. Now is anyone interested in this idea, or have i wasted your time? It was broken up into 3 sections
background
short story
character history

depending on the interest will depend on which ones are held

Id deffo be interested, ive got a good background plot for an army im doing, and id really like a chance to spruce it up and get a little creative with it.

I am interested.

I'll probably do character history, either following Kaimos the Hunter, Terminatus the Terminator or Kommandant Greig...

A very decent idea. I'd be happy to partake in this venture.

come sunday ill have the entry thread up, until then, people get their stories ready, you will have a fortnight from sunday to have them done by, and it will be in one of two categories,
A) history , of a character, chapter, vehicle, something histographical(is that a word, stuffit it is now:))
B) battlescene, some random carnage thrown together just for the fun of it.

entries are limited to 1500 words

Wait, I didn't know this was a SHORT story competition.

I'm pulling out, long stories for me.

Agreed. I just want a free-for-all competition.

Thousandth Son

I am not sure that that would work, because if there isn't a common length, then people will start to gravitate towards the longer stories simply because they are longer. :p

Hmm, I would be interested, but…

1500 words is just way to little. I think I would struggle to write a good coherent story that short.

I can’t really see why people would gravitate towards long stories. On the contrary, I won’t bother reading a long story unless it’s good, whereas I might read through a short story no matter how good or bad it is…

How about a 3k word limit?

Wiseman
09-08-2005, 03:26
after seeing peoples responses the length is changed to 3500 words, hopefully that will give people more room to work with. I was thinking if they were to long then people wouldnt read them as most people are to lazy, and then in turn you would lose potential votes.

3500 words sounds like a good first round.

What's the timeframe for completion?

Yea and what do the stories have to be about do that even have to realte to 40k or fantsy? do we have to wirte them up in the given time or can we sumbit all ready wirteing stories?

Lord Balor

Just a few points i'd like to bring up

3500 Words give or take 10%ish as the general standard?
Due Date 2 Weeks after the new thread has been started?
Completly New Work or Can it be Older Fiction (Unlikely or else time become redundent)?
Battle Scene (Does it have to be?) or Personalised Fluff for your army/Character?
40K Or Fantasy?

I've got some 40K Ideas that i'll cut short for this comp but will later expand upon into a fully fleged story. Lets hope i can get my act together and not remember on the last day...

I’d say no more than the agreed maximum, but no other requirements (except perhaps a minimum length of 1000 words or thereabout…).

I’d suggest at least a month. 2 weeks really isn’t much time to dream up a story, write it down, rewrite it, and finalising it…

I think that it should be a new story, but otherwise unrestricted in form and setting.

TheSonOfAbbadon

I'm back in, 3500 words is enough for a shortish story.

I agree with changing it to a month instead of 2 weeks.

once the entry thread is up it will have the rules, but ill look at most of the rules people have submitted here and use them probably so that its what the people want.
