View Full Version : skirmishers LoS blocking

A rule that doesn't seem right is that skirmishers block LoS to units behind them. This is especially true for the tiny gnoblar trappers and the huge ogres behind them.
And then when 5 shades block LoS to a unit of 10 cold one knights.

So my proposition would be that skirmishers only block LoS when you are unable to draw a line through the skirmishers to the targer you wish to shoot at.

Because both units are moving and so are the enemy it would be quite difficult to fire a shot through a unit of skirmishers without hitting your own troops.

Allowing people to draw LOS through a skirmisher unit but not shoot through it might be accpetable.

And what advantage would it be to have LoS to things behind skirmishers? you cannot charge or shoot it, so none. And you know how bows shoot? In a curve, not a flat line as guns do.

Most missile units stand still when they fire. And even so, Ogres are humongous compared to gnoblars. 5 tiny gnoblars can block LoS to a 20 unit Ogres. You cannot tell me that it is that hard to see where the ogres go and have a clear spot to them. The same is with knights. In game you always attack the knight, never the horse and the knight is which you can clearly see.

1. If you have units of 20 ogres you're doing something wrong.

2. LOS is there for more than just shooting. Most magic and all charges require LOS for instance. Charges aren't in a straight line remember and you can wheel once during the charge so you might be able to move around the skirmishers.

3. Skirmishers rarely stop moving, only doing so if they have weapons that require them to do so. The ability of a skirmisher to move without bumping into the man beside him is what makes them flexible. Skirmishers aren't going to remain perfectly stationary whilst the men behind them attempt to pick targets through their unit.

4. Bows aren't the only missile weapon, far from it and whilst bows have an arcing trajectory this is not portrayed in their rules probably because at short ranges the bows are aimed more or less like a gun or crossbow i.e. straight at the target.

He has a point with the Goblars and Orges. Who actually aims at a Orges knee's with a crossbow anyway. On the other hand there are only a few cases where this is really a glaring problem and could be changed by a simple phrase to the Goblar's rules.

Small: Goblars do not block line of sight to Orges for the purpose of Shooting and magic.

That's a rule for gnoblars though, not skirmishers.

Well,
It would be kinda logical to apply this rule to all large targets (or man-sized models) standing behind small targets. It would be kinda logical!
