I already own the O'Shovah model & am thinking of getting Shadowsun as I think its a really good model but not sure if i'd ever use it, as such i want to know what people think of the Tau special characters? Here's my two cents: -

Aun'VA - seems like a complete waste of points to be. Inspiring presence isnt a great ability especially as I usually use small squads and whilst his honour guard are pretty good in combat they don't have power weapons & you really should be avoiding CC with Tau.

O'Shovah - also combat orientated in a non CC army, although his power weapon can make him quite nasty thee isn't really anything that can support him in the Tau army. Being able to take lots of crisis suits could make him quite attractive but the limitations on other stuff doesn't really seem worth the trade off

ShadowSun - good guns and the ability to shoot them both makes her very good but then they are very short range & ideally you want to be keeping your suits at long ranges. having said she can soak up quite a lot of damage because of the drones & her own invulnerable save.

That's what I think of the characters from their rules but I've never actually used any of them in a game. Do people agree/ disagree with that I've said? How have people found them when they have used them?

Mostly every Special character in the Tau range is rubbish.

You've covered Aun'Va good for yourself, so I'll see a bit on the other guys...

O'Shovah: As far as I'm concerned, hes the best special character for tau. Why? Well, first off all, he has WS 5, a power weapon that kick ass VS. tanks, and every models that can, gets a bonding knife for free(and then, he doesn't got that much competition;) ). The main downside is that he inflicts an enormous blow to your army choises.

ShadowSun: She has wargear that differs too much in areas of usage. She's mainly a MC/Tank/Character hunter at extremly close range, but this makes the stealthsuit mainly useless, since she's to close for it to be usefull, then there's the fact that she's not even an IC as long as her drones is alive! And to make matters worse, she's got a drone that gives her Ld to every Tau model, within 12"! when she's supposed to go and kill things really close up. It just doesn't make any sense!

This shows that Tau SC's, is not worth taking, and should really be a bit more tough over before they got put into the codex.

Only Farsight is worth taking, and he has the downsides of not fitting in your army and changing it's composition.

Can anyone give a rundown of Forge World's Shas'O R'Myr's abilities in a Tau army?

He's pretty decent, got a 2 shot plasma rifle (assault) a 3+ inv in C/C and an ejector system aswell as flechette discharger and a drone controller,
He's good IMO, but he doesnt have the ability to put out as much firepower as another Shas'o with Plasma Rifle and CIC so i dont usually take him.
He also allows you to take the other specialist suits as bodyguards instead commanders only

From what I have been told, not got the book my self so people feel free to correct me. R'Myr has an assault 2 plasma rifle his shield is like a shield generator (edit, said drone... bah stupid brain) but goes up to +3 in melee and I think that is it but there might be more stuff to him I also don't know how well priced he is.

edit beaten to the punch, oh well what i get for not refreshing.

R'myr also has a Flechette Discharger, which means anyone who attacks him in closecombat is wounded on a 4+ before resolving any of their attacks.

Aun'Va: so far the only thing I've come up with is that he's one of the best bullet magnets you can put in your force (the other probably being a Shas'O with I.Armor, Shield drones, and stims). And it almost seems like you wan't him to die. Think about it, 6 wounds at T5 with a re-roll 4+ can soak up a lot of firepower. As an ethereal he's great for helping hold a static line (where everyone can see him). If he dies, you get prefered enemy and furious charge, probably good when the enemy finally does charges your lines. Is he worth it? I don't know, might be fun to pull it off once in a while though.

Shadowsun: IC hunter, pure and simple. 2 STR8 AP1 shots at BS5 screams Insta-kill, does it not? And thanks to her C&C drone she's not to bad at supporting a static line as well.

Farsight: Power weapon + MC damage capabiltiy, that's about it. Free bonding knifes are nice too, but don't add too much to the army as a whole.

I don't have the book so I'm shoting form memory, he has a SG, that get's better in hth. Assault 2 Plasma Rifle, and some kind of defense mechanism when he enters combat.

Only O'Shovah is worth considering IMHO. The others have rules that are not that great. I don't even consider him to be worth it unless you really love crisis suits and very little else on the table. I get bored fielding similar looking units so he doesn't really fit my bill.

Just my 2 cents.
