Seeing as Street Fighter has invaded a couple of other threads, I thought this was an opportune moment to start a new one.

The best Street Fighter going then? And anything else Street Fighter related - favourite characters, funny stories and such.

Fight!

Good call with this thread, I must say.

Ever since I was just a wee little kid and Street Fighter II was the new game on SEGA Genesis I have been in love. As far as game go, this one is simple to pick up and play, but highly rewarding to the master. Especially as the series progressed. While I may not like too many of the 'new' characters, the techniques and abilities they introduced were true rewards to skilled players. Parrying being one of the notable moves.

Personally, I'm about as Old School as possible in Street Fighter and I like to use Ryu and Sagat. Though, if the opportunity presents itself, I just might break out Dudley, since hes a badass and I like his move set.

Well, for me the best one was Street Fighter Alpha 2 Sega Saturn version. Amazing graphics and sound, much easier to play than the PSX version due to Saturn's outstanding gamepad.

Funny things: in Street Fighter Alpha 3 beating Bison (the last boss for almost every character in the game) was quite hilarious. You could not jump or he would use his Ultimate Combo: that special Torpedo thingy. However he would use it too, almost all times, in a certain part of his background music, so... you should just avoid jumping around until that part and after he released the combo... crush him to death.

Favourite characters: I've always been a Ryu fan, for me the ultimate character in a fighting game (maybe apart from Akira in Virtua Fighter). Very simple to use yet very effective. However if I wanted to have a little fun I just played with Shin Akuma... the Raging Demon special move was just too cool to be left out.

Christ, how on earth did you guys reply so fast? Your replies were already there when I submitted the thread! I guess the thread must have come up without the poll while I was typing the options out. Blimey, never knew it did that.

Anyhow, although my personal favourite is SSFII Turbo and it's probably the most balanced, I reckon plain old SFII Turbo (one less S) Hyper Fighting is the best game, due to its being simpler and more and accessible. Especially compared to the relatively baffling Alpha and III series.

I also have a soft spot for Alpha 3, although I play it through MAME because I couldn't find a PlayStation copy, and to be frank IT KICKS MY ASS. Now I'm not the world's best SF player but I'm no slouch either - yet, even granted that I'm using a PC gamepad and can only pull off super combos with a 50%-odd success rate, I had to use save states to beat Bison with Karin, and it took me an hour and a half to do it. Even after I got good at predicting his Cheese Torpedo. The fact that the way the game is supposed to run, you only get one shot at Bison is savage bordering on criminal.

But STILL I love it.

My favourite character is (fairly obviously <-----) Rose, even though she isn't very good in Alpha 3. Partly cos she's just cool, partly because of that hit-you-loads-of-times-with-basic-moves super combo, and partly because I can't get over how much fun it is reflecting people's fireballs back at them. Especially Akuma's air ones. I also like Karin, partly for the style of her moves and partly because, unlike Sakura, she has the sense to wear shorts under her skirt.

As I said in another thread, Third Strike is my favorite because of the balance, music, and animation. That being said, my favorite character is Dan because we have the same first name and because he's so much fun to use. Has anyone played as him in SVC Chaos? What a laugh riot.

The Gameboy Advance version of SFII is pretty good, especially as they made a few minor tweeks to the story to reflect story bits from the Alpha/Zero series. (Cammy's background, Sagat not being such a jerk)

And shouldn't this thread be called Super Street Fighter Thread Champion Poll Edition Turbo?

Or even Super Street Fighter Thread Turbo Hyper Special Poll Edition EX Plus Alpha: Double Third Strike Impact - Fight for the Marvel vs Capcom Superheroes. Heh. It was only supposed to be a generic joke.

I'm quite fond of Dan too. Super Taunt!

Although I can see SF3 is the better game, I voted SSF2T because it's the one I find most fun and thrilling to play. It's almost tactical.
Of course this opinion is subject to change once I chip my PS2 and grab a copy of SF3 for home use.

Whomever voted for Alpha 3, I will kill you. A fine game, sure enough, but completely broken by the introduction of V-ism.

Hyper Fighting will always have a soft spot in my heart and was probably the most played game in my schooldays (and attributed to the demise of my squeaky joypad), but the balance in characters wasn't quite there. Dhalsim anyone?

Favourite chars?
SSF2T- FeiLong. Man, that dragon kick is just too satisfying
Alpha series- Rose. Love this gal. Her design appealed as well as her play style. Guess I like rebounding fireballs (like LeiLei/HsienKo)
HyperFighting- Vega. Input the speed code and ratch it up to lvl 10 :)

So fine, kill me.:D I also voted for Hyper Fighting, it's a multiple choice poll. Like I said, I just really like Alpha 3, for its fun factor and atmosphere, rather than its gameplay per se. Out of curiosity, though, how does V-ism break it? I've never found it especially useful.

EDIT: Interesting that at this stage, everything has 1 vote (apart from EX, which I only included for completeness really)...

>>>>>Yeah, Super Street Fighter 2 is where its at. I used to play that on my SNES way back in the day, crap I miss it! It had the 8 originals with 6 (or 8?) new characters. I still love to use Ryu and Ken, heh.

I've played Some of the Alpha and EX series, and they're fun for a bit; just that some of the combos are beyond me, but for an hour or two against a buddy its fun; Street Fighter all the way; was and always will be better then Mortal Combat!

Whoops, didn't notice it was multiple...

I think they should put Haggar in a SF game, yeah!

V-ism. Good idea. Poor execution.
It's a bit too easy to implement. It breaks blocks. It does too much damage. Combos take no skill and are ugly. I mean, what kind of combo is hardpunch, hardpunch, hardpunch ad infinitum?
You know it's overpowered when everyone eschews the other kinds of 'isms' for the V

Damn, I must be doing something drastically wrong then, because I can never get V-ism custom combos to do much of anything. Also I'm 99.9% sure V-ism's basic attacks actually do the least damage of the three.

And they should definitely put Haggar in a Street Fighter game. If only real life politicians shared his crime policy of taking to the streets and pounding people into the ground in person - "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" taken to a whole new level. Plus he looks like a porn star! What else could you want?

I always thought Haggar looked like a cross between Schwarzenegger or Stallon, combined with Freddy Mercury. And the jerk let his buddy Cody rot in jail!

I remeber streetfighter in the arcade when i was on holiday in Carnlough in the early 1990s (92-93ish), great arcade that one, everything for 10p when it would be 20p in most other places, that place rocked. The GBA SF2 turbo was quite good, really conjured the atmosphere of the old SF, brought back a few good memories y'know.

I did play Streetfighter 3 on the GC recently, I liked it and thought I could have got into it with a bit more time.

Forgot to mention that SF3 to me feels...slow. Maybe it's the animation, or that I'm more used to the twitchy play from SSF2T.
You'll also find less people playing SF3 in the arcades than SSF2T.

I can appreciate the mechanics of the game but compared to ALpha and SSF2T it's kinda snailish.
Now, if only they sped it up a tad......
But then people wouldn't be able to parry :D

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I like playing SF on the PS2 more than the other consoles. The controller is balanced and all you have to do is take the fierces off of the triggers and you're set.

But any beatumup fan HAS to have an arcade stick!

Haha, "fierce" indeed :D Haven't heard that in a while

What?!

Every one know that Street Fighter 2:World Warrior is the best edition - and it's not even an option!!

SFII stole a lot of my time - never really enjoyed the Turbo editions though - slightly too fast for my liking. I prefered World Warrior (on the Amiga) or Championship (in the arcade).

I even found a Black Belt machine in one arcade - the pirate edition. Balrog's lightning sending out bolts like Guiles Sonic Boom, Ken and Ryu's Hadoken being a double fireball and all sorts of wierd stuff like that. Fun, but not votable.
