So how about this army list using the four cruisers you get in the starter box.

1 Mars + Targeting Matrix + Fleet Admiral = 385

1 Dictator = 220

1 Dominator = 190

1 Lunar + Torpedo Tubes = 180

Total Points = 975

Hmmm, nah, not both Dictator + Mars, too many carriers. Change one of them into a Gothic.

I disagree. I don't think you can ever have enough carriers. While they're not great SoL, they're damn good at attacking anything at any distance. Not as clumsy as a Nova cannon, they can still provide damage in masses. You need some close in ships to provide *cough* metal shields *cough* when other ships get close, but play a forward, turn, fall back game while you're on special orders to reload, and they can be deadly. My 1.5k list includes 3 carriers, the ord/f/b I can lay out in a turn makes my enemies weep.

The Mars needs fixing. As it stands now, it's a VP bonanza for the opponent - more victory points than an Emperor-class battleship bottled up in something as fragile as a Lunar.

Put the fleet admiral on the Dictator instead. He's better there for a number of reasons - you make the Mars less of a target, you make your fleet admiral safer (the Dictator's extra turrets make it more survivable than anything short of a Grand Cruiser), plus your Dictator carries more ordnance than the Mars does, making successful Reload Ordnance checks more important for the Dictator than for the Mars.

And It's been a while since I've played with the pieces from a boxed set, but I'm not sure you'll have enough weapons battery modules to put together those four ships - you may fall one short. You might want to count up how many you have, and maybe switch the Dominator to a 2nd Lunar with the Nova upgrade if you have to.

Can never have enough carriers? Start playing Tau then or Chaos with all its Devastations. But not the IN!

Why not? Other fleets may be able to cram more launch bays into a list than the Navy can, but number of launch bays isn't the only thing that makes a carrier fleet effective. The Navy can support its bombers in ways that other fleets can't - Chaos doesn't have nearly as many torpedoes for turret-crushing combined-ordnance salvos, and the Tau's main carrier, though cheap, only has shields as strong as the tiniest of Imperial escort vessels.

If you like attack craft, the only fleet you really need to avoid is the Necrons.

For me: 1 carrier per 1500 points in an IN or Chaos force is enough.

My Tau CPF, going by removed SG rules has 8 launch bays in 1500 points.
Incidentally last Eldar battle had 8 launch bays as well.

But it are the big guns that hurt the most.

for me, i like one carrier per 500 pts

i am concern about the lack of maneuvarability in an imperial fleet without escorts or light cruisers

Problem with Mars in 1k battles is that it has to have the admiral; the admiral always gets assigned to your most expensive ship, meaning the Mars is 320 points minimum.

That's a rule for Chaos. It doesn't apply to the Imperial Navy.

You could put a Solar Admiral on a Cobra if you wanted to.

the mars is a big-time liability, that's 1/3 of your points (relatively more in 1k than 1500 pts) in a ship no more survivable than an average cruiser.

IF you can use the additional "unofficial" ships, the Jovian is a good choice, for 240 pts you get 6 launch bays.

Seems hefty, but it's direct arament is pathetic, though long ranged: Strength 2 lances with a range of 60 cm, squadron it with the dictator and you have a dedicated carrier squadron which has teeth if anything tries to take it on up close.

Though I do consider the dictator overpriced, dunno if it has changed with the new rules.

Well I'll be danged. That changes things a little...

Yup, just place the admiral on the Lunar....
